Chapter 3: To Live or to Love

“What is it you ask me to do?” Inuyasha said slowly.

A slow, malicious smile slid over the man's face, and though Inuyasha could not see it, he could practically feel the man's satisfaction.

“First Inuyasha, you must swear your allegiance to me and only me,” the man hissed.

Inuyasha did not like the sound of this offer, but if Kagome's safety was at stake, he had little choice.

“I swear it.”

The man chuckled softly. “It is amusing to see how weak an emotion like love makes you, Inuyasha.” He spit on Inuyasha, but Inuyasha didn't react. He knew he was helpless.

“Secondly,” the man begin again, “You have yet to claim Kagome as your mate correct, Inuyasha?”

In Inuyasha's blurred memory he could not recall any such incident occurring before. He shook his head so slightly it was barely noticeable.

“Interesting,” the man paused for a moment before continuing, “I think I need a way to test your devotion to me Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha raised his head slightly. He did not know what this man could be thinking, but he assumed it would not mean good for him.

“I want you to bring the human girl here Inuyasha, to my lair.” Inuyasha was startled by this request.

“What do you want with her?” Inuyasha asked sternly.

The man chuckled lowly once more. “There is only one way to prove your true devotion to me Inuyasha. Should you fail this test, I will kill both you and Kagome without hesitation.” Inuyasha braced himself for the words to come. “I want you to bring Kagome here, and you will watch as I claim the one you love as my own right before you eyes.”

“I would never let you have her!” Inuyasha growled loudly and angrily at him, struggling once again against his bonds, tearing his wrists to shreds. “You bastard!”

The man's roar of laughter and amusement rose loud enough to compete with Inuyasha's groans of hate and pain. The man's fist connected with Inuyasha's face, and it silenced him for a moment.

“Don't be a fool Inuyasha. You would willingly sacrifice the life of the one you love because of your own stubbornness?”

Inuyasha calmed slightly. He knew he was right. Although the pain of admittance was worse than he had hoped, giving Kagome to this man was far better than having her die because of his choice. The cloth around his eyes was so soaked that tears now dripped down his cheeks.

“I...I…I w-will bring her h-here,” Inuyasha managed between his sobs.

“Good,” the man said, “Good.”

Inuyasha felt a fist enter is gut forcefully, and he passed out.
