Chapter 9: My Teddy
The hours dragged on like the slow ticking of a clock, and every minute Inuyasha found himself drifting further and further from lucidity. Kagome was about to be raped right in front of him, and he couldn't think of a way to save her.
“Damn it!” he roared. He was digging his claws deep into his palms, but the pain didn't faze him.
Kagome was the best thing to ever happen to him. He finally found where he belonged, and it was about to be destroyed… again.
The irony was nearly unbearable for the sorrowful Hanyo. Inuyasha had never been a religious person, but in his half delusional and desperate state he was scraping for every ounce of hope he could muster. Bowing his head lowly, he closed his eyes and sighed deeply.
“Kami, if you see fit to take pity on a lowly Hanyo who has reached his wits end, please offer Kagome a safe escape. I know I already owe you for the souls I've reaped, and my life is far less meaningful than Kagome's. Please, Kami, I beg of you.”
Inuyasha was half expecting an unseen window to suddenly open and a golden beam of light to come flashing in on him accompanied by a deep booming voice that would offer Inuyasha a sense of comfort beyond reason. But that was crazy wasn't it?
Crazy… Inuyasha thought about that word. How could he be sure when he had lost hold on reality if he was crazy? In order to be crazy, you need to think you are sane. He felt fine, but then again, he knew he was not fully there.
After what seemed like an eternity alone with his thoughts, Inuyasha began being visited by visions of his past and future. They so clearly molded into his mind that after awakening he was certain they were real.
That notion caused him to pause and contemplate. How could he be certain if this here and now was not a conception of his dazed bewildered head?
Inuyasha was startled when a droplet of sweat dripped into his eye, the salty water stinging slightly causing him to cringe. Before that moment he had not realized he had been sweating, but making it a point to notice, he realized he was drenched.
The past, present, and future agonies in Inuyasha's life had converged on this one moment, and it was slowly enveloping him like a shadow smoothing a fading light. Inuyasha could feel the bulb around his thoughts shattering, and soon the light would cease to exist entirely.
Inuyasha couldn't bare the silence any longer. He bursted out loudly in absolute frustration and agony, “FUCK!”
It was such a loud sound that it echoed around the small chamber he was held captive in, laughing at him tauntingly. A slow sinister laugh that made Inuyasha swell with anger.
“What's so funny?” he growled, the echoes growing and the laughter increasing in volume.
Inuyasha was a small child. He sat huddled in a corner with a teddy his mother had given him when he was born. He had poured his heart and soul into that toy, loving it with every ounce of affection he could. His teddy didn't laugh at him. His teddy was his friend.
All the other kids laughed at him, pointing, snickering, while he sat crying alone, his tears pouring into his beloved teddy. He loved that teddy.
He loved that teddy. His teddy was his friend. The other kids laughed at him, but not teddy. Teddy loved him.
Teddy loved him.
Teddy didn't laugh.
He banged his fists against the hard stone floor, whimpering like a child.
“Mommy, tell them to stop laughing at me! Mommy?” Inuyasha's eyes filled with loss, “Mommy… why don't you answer me? Don't you love me Mommy?”
Inuyasha snapped out of his delusion, his cheeks still streaked with his tears.
This was just like then, except his teddy was Kagome and the children were Naraku. But when he was a child, he was so scared, so helplessly scared, and alone; he had been so alone.
It felt like Inuyasha had been imprisoned in this hell hole for days, and his stomach agreed. But if that were true, Kagome would certainly have died by now.
Suddenly Inuyasha was alarmed. Kagome was nearby, he could call out to her, and she would answer; her beautiful voice, a beautiful melody strummed on a heart, and it would warm his cold dying heart.
His heart. That was it. The thing in his heart. It was doing this to him. He had to destroy it. He had to tear it out of his heart.
That thing was like a dark curtain draped inside his heart, preventing it from being true and happy. He was going to have to remove the curtain if he wanted see inside.
This menace is what had brought all of this upon him; all this doubt and frustration that was seeping into his very essence emerged from that very beast.
But how could he remove something that had become an integral part of him without killing himself in the process? Could he live without this thing that had buried its roots of doubt and anger so deep in his heart?
When Inuyasha was certain he could no longer take solitude, he heard the slow footsteps of Naraku approaching. Inuyasha was growling lowly, digging his nails further into his mangled palms.
Naraku's hideous laughter filled the room as he entered, followed by a few minions who held what appeared to be different ointments. His nose confirmed what his eyes had hypothesized.
“Well, don't you too look absolutely lovely this evening?” Naraku said with a grin.
Inuyasha was shaking with emotions, and he couldn't have held his words if he had wanted, “I'll fucking kill you if you dare lay a finger on my Kagome!”
“Your Kagome?” Naraku asked, amusement in his voice, “Last I checked you had failed to claim her Inuyasha. I wont make the same mistake.”
His moment was close, his muscles were tensed, his mind was clear and lucid. He would have to strike swiftly if he wanted to catch Naraku off guard. Not yet.
He had to wait until Naraku was going to move him. After all, he wanted Inuyasha to watch.
Naraku walked around the corner just out of sight of Inuyasha and began talking lowly to Kagome.
Inuyasha's mind was clear, but his body felt weak. Inuyasha's will was failing.
A loud slapping sound caught Inuyasha's attention.
“What did you do to Kagome you bastard?” Inuyasha threatened.
“What I do to my bitch is my business,” Naraku replied mockingly.
Naraku stepped around the corner and kneeled down by Inuyasha, “Wouldn't you like to see what I've done to your precious Kagome?”
“You bastard, if you've hurt her…” Inuyasha started. He was rewarded with a fist to his face.
“Say hello to your beloved Inuyasha,” Naraku grinned a horrible malicious grin that filled Inuyasha's heart with blackness.
Inuyasha could not believe what he saw.
