Part 9: "And the rest is history."

Nearly a month after the explanation from the part-youkai Alexia and her husband Tye, Kagome and Inuyasha, both had become really lazy.

Kagome had started showing before the second month of being pregnant, and began her sleeping habits as Tye had explained to her-sleeping nearly all day, and choosing just a few hours to be awake. For Kagome, her hours to stay awake were from nine p.m. to one a.m. During the rest of the day, both she and Inuyasha slept.

Kagome had reasons to sleep all day, her energy was very limited, but Inuyasha had just become plan lazy. Both Kagome and Inuyasha began a fascination with pillows, which disturbed both of them, and if you didn't see a hoard of pillows in a Kagome's room, something was severely wrong or someone was washing them.

During the time they spent awake, they sat watching the TV or eating. During their time awake, both had gotten into the habit of wearing slouchy clothes-even Inuyasha, who had finally gotten used to clothes of her time, namely pajamas.

Both of them decided that their new "life" of sleeping all the time and doing nothing but sit in the house was completely boring. They wanted to do something different, but their times of being awake limited anything they could do.

Kagome lay back on her bed with her eyes closed, but she was awake-she just didn't feel like getting up. She had glanced at her clock it was a little before nine. She sighed.

She listened to the quiet house; everyone else must have already been asleep for the night, while she was just then getting ready to get up. How long had it actually been? She looked next to her bed at a calendar and counted the days-30 days since she became pregnant and 29 since she found out. Yup, it sucked.

She looked at the calendar closer and then gave a silent chuckle-she'd hear cursing tonight and glanced over at Inuyasha. (Yup, he's human.) She smiled. He looked cute asleep like that as a human as he lay on top of about six pillows practically hugging the one he was drooling on. If it weren't for his lack of super senses she wouldn't have giggled as loud as she did while she watched him cuddle closer to the pillow.

Kagome reached her hand up and scratched the side of her face to notice something different. She put her hand out in front of her and looked at it-no claws. She sat up and looked at her hands more closely. She didn't understand it and turned to wake Inuyasha. "Hey, Inuyasha." She said.

He mumbled something incoherent.

"Inuyasha." Kagome repeated.

Inuyasha opened his eyes and began cursing immediately after he was awake. "Shit!"

"Shh!" Kagome said. "Momma is asleep by now and she has to go to work tomorrow."

"Feh." Inuyasha said as he sat up and mouthed even more explicit curses to his human form. "This is a nightmare; it has to be."

"Really... You don't remember changing every month?" Kagome asked sarcastically.

"Feh!" Inuyasha turned his nose up.

"And you drool, you know." Kagome said with a smile.

"I do not." Inuyasha protested the acquisition and he looked at her

"Oh, yeah." She showed her hands to him.

"What?" He asked as he examined her hands.

"No claws." She explained.

Inuyasha chuckled. "Looks like the baby's time to be powerless is now-tonight the baby is human." He smiled and laughed a bit.

"That's what I thought." Kagome said.

"Feh. Time of conception must affect the power-less time for a hanyou." He suggested.

Kagome shrugged and then nodded. Wow, Inuyasha was acting semi-intelligent; that was the first time in three weeks he said something that actually made sense.

Kagome stretched and stood up. "I'm going downstairs for food."

Inuyasha stood up and nearly stumbled on a pillow.

Kagome giggled and walked to the door and opened it, quietly, and proceeded out the door.

Inuyasha followed her down the stairs.

Kagome could hear him grumbling about something, but she couldn't really understand him. When she heard him laugh to himself, she just shook her head and continued to the kitchen.

Inuyasha turned on the light as she walked on ahead toward the refrigerator and opened it.

"What do you want to eat?" Kagome asked as she looked at Inuyasha.

"How about Ramen?" Inuyasha said.

Kagome glared. "Do you never tire of the same thing?"

Inuyasha shrugged. "Feh. I can't take anything spicy or with a strong taste."

"You're human right now Inuyasha; the taste won't be as bad." Kagome said somewhat sarcastically.

(Well, duh, baka.) Inuyasha thought to himself. Then he thought about it; he had never tried to eat anything in his human form before. "What do you want?"

Kagome stared at him blankly; he wasn't being selfish. "Well...actually...I'd like to go out and eat."

"Out where?" Inuyasha asked.

"To a restaurant." Kagome said somewhat sarcastically.

"Okay, well, let's go; I'm only human one night a month, let me try something different." Inuyasha said.

Kagome stared at him. "Are you sick or something...?"

Inuyasha glared at her.

"Okay." Kagome shut the fridge. "We'll need to change."

"Fine." Inuyasha agreed.

Kagome went upstairs and changed while Inuyasha stood downstairs and waited for his turn to change. When Kagome came downstairs he went upstairs to change.

Kagome and Inuyasha were still dressed somewhat loosely. Kagome was in a rather large red button-up blouse and a long black skirt. Inuyasha wore black pants and a wrinkled white shirt.

Kagome found her house keys and the two left the house quietly.

Kagome and Inuyasha walked side-by-side down the sidewalk. She looked over at him and noticed that he was rather tense. "You really hate being human, don't you?"

Inuyasha didn't look at her. "Feh!"

Kagome looked at the sidewalk in front of her. "So...when the Shikon no Tama is completed, do you still want to become a full youkai...?"

Inuyasha sighed. "Not really..."

Kagome looked up at Inuyasha. "I've been wondering...why did you go after it to begin with?"

Inuyasha looked down. "You wouldn't understand..."

"Of course I wouldn't unless you tell me Inuyasha." Kagome said.

Inuyasha stopped, causing Kagome to stop. "Really? I'm not sure if you would; you've never been ripped away from everyone you cared about and have people out to kill you every day."

Inuyasha started walking again.

Kagome continued the path to the restaurant and this time decided not to ask him any questions.

When they reached the restaurant, Kagome ordered the food and then the two of them sat down.

Kagome ate slowly and occasionally noted Inuyasha's bad table manners. She shook her head and continued in her silence.

Inuyasha had finished eating and sat back. "This is nice." He said solemnly.

"What?" Kagome asked as she looked up at him. "The food?"

"No." Inuyasha said somewhat sarcastically and then looked down. "Being out...in my human form with...you."

Kagome was shocked at hearing him say something like that.

"Um...Kagome?"

"Huh?"

"What do you...how do you feel about me being a hanyou?" Inuyasha asked as he kept his gaze at the table-top.

"Well...If you're wondering if I prefer you as a human, Inuyasha, I don't." Kagome said.

Inuyasha looked up at her.

"I miss the ears." Kagome said with a smile. "I don't care what you look like or what you are, Inuyasha; you are who you are, and personally I don't think a jewel should change that."

Inuyasha just looked at her. (Did I just hear that right? She doesn't care if I'm a hanyou? Even Kikyo...didn't like my hanyou form.)

Kagome took a drink of her drink then set it down. "Have you ever gone out on nights like this with anyone else?"

"Well...actually, I have." Inuyasha said.

"With Kikyo...?"

"No." Inuyasha said partially sarcastic. "When I was little my mother and I went to the river. I fell in one time because I was playing. She didn't know how to help me, but..." He stopped shortly.

"But what?" Kagome asked.

"It's not important." Inuyasha said somewhat sadly.

"Well...it seemed to be." Kagome noted. (What's he hiding?) She wondered. "So...did you and your mother live alone?"

"No." Inuyasha said. "We had servants living with us, some of them acted weird around me." He looked to the side. "And we also had one other living with us."

"Who?" Kagome asked.

"Do you want to know?" Inuyasha asked.

"Actually, yes; I'm curious." Kagome stated.

"Fine." Inuyasha said as he stuck his nose up. He had tried to avoid the delicate subject of his past, but she did ask. He crossed his arms. "You did know that Sesshoumaru is only six years older than me didn't you?"

Kagome blanked out and stared at Inuyasha. "Nani?"

"Well, that is if you don't count the 50 year tree seal." Inuyasha said.

"You...grew up...with Sesshoumaru...?" Kagome asked somewhat shocked.

"Feh!" Inuyasha grumbled. "What, did you expect something else?"

"Well...uh...I always thought that...he was a lot older than you." Kagome mumbled.

"Well...he is now, thanks to the seal." Inuyasha said sarcastically. He looked at his fingers and began counting. "Technically, I am 17 and he is 73, or if you want to count my 50 years of being sealed, I'm 67."

"Nani!" Kagome shouted. "You're only 17!"

"Feh!" He shouted in response.

They were gathering attention from some others in the restaurant.

Kagome stared at Inuyasha unblinking. All this time she assumed he had to be at least in his 20's but he was only a year or so older than her. Of course it did explain why he acted somewhat childish.

"Let's talk about this later." Inuyasha said as he noticed the gaze of other people.

Inuyasha and Kagome sat in silence as Kagome finished eating. After that, they left the restaurant.

"So, where now?" Inuyasha asked as they stopped on the sidewalk outside of the restaurant.

"Well...I don't know." Kagome said.

"Let's go to that park thing." Inuyasha said. "Our...conversation didn't quite finish."

Kagome nodded. She did want to find out more about Inuyasha's past even though he seemed skeptical to answer, but she wanted to understand things about him.

Inuyasha and Kagome walked to the park slowly and quietly. When they reached the part, Kagome led Inuyasha to a pond, where Kagome found a place to sit under a tree.

It was a clear dark night, so the only light they had was from stars and a nearby pathway lamp.

Kagome stretched her arms above her head and leaned against the tree. She didn't know what time it was, but she was getting tired and sleepy.

Inuyasha sat down next to Kagome.

"So...Inuyasha...?" Kagome began.

"Yeah?" Inuyasha replied after a moment of silence.

"What happened to your mother?" Kagome asked. She knew that Inuyasha didn't like to talk about his past, but she really wanted to know.

Inuyasha looked down at the ground and sat silent for a minute or so. "I'll...tell you what I can remember..."

"Okay..." Kagome said.

Inuyasha sat silent again and then looked up at the pond. "I was five when it all happened. For starters, I never hear the news from my mother that my father had died."

Kagome looked at Inuyasha.

"She wasn't going to tell us, but Sesshoumaru had overheard it and told me." Inuyasha said. "That night I snuck out of the house following Sesshoumaru to a small forest clearing near the river. He didn't say anything, though I remember asking him about a million questions. Eventually I just sat down and shut up. A while later, after I had dozed off, I heard Sesshoumaru say something about the village. The next thing I remember was being pulled off the ground and pulled back to the village, which was partially on fire. Youkai were attacking the village, but a barrier of some sort blocked them from destroying my home. When I went inside the house I found my mother and...all of the servants dead. I wasn't going to leave; I was going to stay there with my mother's body and continue to think that she would get up...but..."

"Sesshoumaru pulled you out..." Kagome mumbled.

"Yeah...he pulled me to the forest and we were attacked." Inuyasha continued. "Somehow we became separated and I ran as fast and a far as I could. After that, I began to wonder what happened to him, and years later...he showed back up and was completely different. He didn't try to kill me then; he told me how worthless I was and told me that I could change it with the Shikon jewel, so...I went after it."

"You didn't have anything else you could do, did you...?" Kagome asked.

"No." Inuyasha said. "What else could a 'pathetic freak of nature' do? After that, he began to 'visit' me on the New Moon."

"Then after you found where the Shikon jewel was, you met...Kikyo." Kagome added in a dulled tone.

"And the rest is history." Inuyasha finished.

"...So, in truth...you just wanted to find someone...anyone who you could stay with..." Kagome muttered.

"Yeah." Inuyasha said flatly.

"Did Kikyo know?" Kagome asked in a dull tone.

"About my past?" Inuyasha asked.

"Yeah." Kagome answered.

"No; I never told her the reason I actually sought the jewel." Inuyasha said. "In fact, she never saw Sesshoumaru, and I never told her anything about him."

"Thank you." Kagome said.

"For what?" Inuyasha asked.

"For telling me." Kagome explained.

"Actually...I should...thank you..." Inuyasha said with a stutter.

Kagome looked at Inuyasha.

"You don't realize how hard it is to keep something like that to yourself..." Inuyasha said somberly.

Kagome smiled. She was happy that he finally trusted her enough that he told her about what he's been through, or at lease part of what he has been through. She leaned forward away from the tree and rubbed her back. "That tree is uncomfortable."

Inuyasha chuckled. "Well, duh, it's a tree." He held his arm aside. "You can lean against me if you want."

Kagome looked at him and smiled before she leaned against his side allowing him to relax his arm around her. It was a comfortable position to be in, even though at first she was tense to be that close to someone. She eventually relaxed to the sound of his breathing and heartbeat.

After a few minutes of silence, Kagome felt herself begin to doze.

"Say, Kagome..." Inuyasha began.

"Hmm?" Kagome asked as she looked up to see his face.

Inuyasha could tell that she was sleepy, and decided against telling her his thoughts. "Maybe I'll tell you later...when you're not so sleepy."

Kagome nodded and lowered her head to his chest to relax. After a few minutes, she was sleep.

Inuyasha looked down at Kagome as she lay there asleep against his chest. He smiled. He used his free hand to brush a stray strand of hair out of her eyes. (Kagome...) he thought. She didn't laugh at his past, as she thought she always would. In fact, she seemed to understand; something he felt no one would ever do. He had loved Kikyo because of her understanding of his feelings of being an outcast; Kagome didn't see it that way, and he knew that. Kagome understood him and that made him happy. It was a desperate situation which caused this change in him, but his feelings felt the same. In a way he loved Kagome before, but he didn't understand why.

He frowned. He could never have saved Kikyo when he was with her, and now he dared tried to relate those feelings to a false clay figure of a woman who died 50 years ago. And the day he met Kagome, he called Kagome by Kikyo's name. He did realize the differences after that day. Kagome was kind and sometimes cruel, depending on how he acted. She didn't mind him, and had clearly said that she liked his hanyou form; that was something Kikyo never did since she wished to rid him of the form he was born with.

Inuyasha watched Kagome sleep in his arms and decided to admit to himself what was really bothering him-he could lose Kagome. There was a chance that he couldn't save her, but maybe this plan would work-keeping her away from the past while the three months past would be for the best.

"Kagome." He called quietly. He wanted to say what he felt to her even if she didn't hear the words.

Kagome didn't reply but she griped her fingers on his shirt and shifted slightly.

Inuyasha smiled at the sleeping Kagome. He put his nose to the top of her head, and then whispered his true feelings, "I love you."
