Chapter 1: A Broken Heart
“That does it!” Kagome snapped.
She had finally had enough. She felt distant from him. Inuyasha had just returned from another meeting with Kikyo.
After two years with him, Kagome was finally tired of the games. He loved Inuyasha with all her heart. How Inuyasha felt, she did not know. How many times had she stared into his eyes thinking he was going to kiss her? Every time he had turned away and changed the subject. Not only did he not show any kind of feelings toward her, but, more and more, he would run off unannounced. She knew by the look on his face that he had seen Kikyo again. She didn't want to be second best, he didn't want to tell her how he really felt. This was how it went.
Kagome's glare pierced his soul.
She had met him outside Kaede's hut as he walked back from the forest. He had seen one of Kikyo's shini-dama-chuu and snuck into the forest. She had only come to tell him that she had seen Kagura flying south of Musashi. When he returned, he had found Kagome, standing with her arms crossed and looking like she might destroy something.
“You went to see her…again!” she yelled.
Miroku, Sango and Shippo were standing off to the side, under a tree, with dumbfounded expressions on their faces.
“Kagome…I…”
“Don't even say it!” she interrupted.
“But…”
“I've had enough, Inuyasha!” she glowered, “I'm leaving!”
“Why…where are you going?” Inuyasha sputtered, trying to find the words.
He had never seen her this angry. Quite frankly, he was scared of her. He didn't understand how she could be this mad at him. He thought that she'd be a little upset that he'd seen Kikyo again, but he only went to gather information about Naraku. He had never expected this. He was completely at a loss for words.
“I'm going where I'm appreciated…and loved” she said as tears welled in her eyes, but refused to fall, “I'm tired of your games, Inuyasha!”
“What games?”
Understanding swept over Sango and Miroku as Kagome strolled over to them. They knew Kagome had been holding all of this pent up inside her for a long time. It had only been a matter of time. Shippo whimpered.
“I'm sorry” she said to them, “I can't stay here.”
Shippo began to cry. Kagome bent down to hug the young kitsune.
“It's ok” she consoled and then looked over at Sango and Miroku, “you can visit…I'll be at Kouga's.”
Inuyasha's jaw dropped, `She did not just say what I think she said!'
“You're going fucking where?!” he yelled, “You're running off with that mangy wolf?!”
“His name is Kouga and yes…he appreciates me!”
“Huh!” Inuyasha half-laughed, “I knew you had a thing for that bastard!”
“I don't love Kouga! He loves me, though…he'll take care of me!”
“I take care of you!” Inuyasha said indignantly.
“You're so damn dense, baka…one day you'll figure out how much I love you, but I'm tired of waiting for it!”
With that, Kagome jumped onto Kirara's back and flew off, leaving Inuyasha speechless. A soon as she was in the air, the tears began to fall.
“Baka! He's so dense! He has no idea how much it hurts!” she said aloud.
He had hurt Kagome too much. He hurt her when he went to see Kikyo. He hurt her when he ruined every “moment” he and Kagome could've ever had. Deep down in his heart he loved Kagome, but he was too scared to show it. He was scared of rejection and of her returning his love and what that might lead to. No one loved a hanyou.
Kagome just wanted his affection. She just wanted to know that he was appreciated, loved, and cared for. She knew when she gazed in his eyes that he wanted to kiss her, she wanted him to, but every time he would leave her disappointed. All the disappointment and longing for him was slowly breaking her heart. Then, there was Kikyo. More and more often, Kikyo was showing up and Inuyasha would run off to her. He would come back with small tidbits of information. It was getting harder for her to believe him. She'd seen the way he acted around Kikyo when he thought she wasn't there. He wasted no time in showing her affection.
The tears kept falling, even as Kirara landed on Kouga's side of the river, not far from his den.
“Thank you, Kirara…I'll walk from here” Kagome said as she patted the fire cat's head, “You can bring the others and visit anytime.
Kirara rubbed against her leg and growled sadly before taking off, back into the night sky. Kagome began walking toward Kouga's den, but had not gone twenty feet when a cyclone came toward her from that direction.
“Kagome?” Kouga said as he stopped in front of her, “Why are you in the woods, by yourself, after dark?”
“I came to see you” she sniffed.
“What's the matter? Where's mutt-face?”
“I left…I need to be away from him for a while…you've always told me I could stay here.”
“Of course you can stay here!” he said, taking her hands, “What did he do to you?”
“I don't wanna talk about it right now”
Kouga growled, “If he hurt you…I'll tear him limb from limb!”
“No, I'm fine”
Kouga didn't want to upset her further, so he let the subject drop for the night. He pulled her onto his back and sped off. Kagome fell asleep on his back within minutes. He sensed it and took her straight to his bed and laid her down. He covered her with a fur blanket and went outside, where he could hear Ginta and Hakkaku coming.
“Boss!” Ginta yelled, “Was that Sister Kagome?”
“Yeah, she's sleeping so, be quiet!” Kouga growled.
“What's sis doing here? Where's Inuyasha?” asked Hakkaku.
“Dunno…she said she came to see me…alone”
“Maybe she's decided to stay and become your mate!” Ginta said hopefully.
“Maybe…I know this…mutt-face will come for her” Kouga frowned.
Kouga sent Ginta and Hakkaku off on guard duty in case Inuyasha did come. He, then, went back inside. He sat at the edge of his bed and leaned against the wall, staring at Kagome.
`She really is beautiful when she sleeps' he thought, `maybe, there is still a chance…she came to me, after all!'
The next morning, Kagome awoke with a start. She looked over to find Kouga, staring down at her.
“You okay?”
“I'll be fine” Kagome sighed, “Inuyasha didn't come for me?”
“Nope” Kouga said, getting up. He walked off and brought her back some breakfast, “You wanna tell me what happened now?”
Kagome sighed and told him the events of the previous night. “I'm sorry to put all this on you” she frowned.
“Don't be”
“I just couldn't stand it any longer…just seeing him breaks my heart…I had to get away”
“You love him that much?”
“Yes” she said, fighting back tears, “he's too much of a baka to realize it, though!”
Kouga put an arm around her shoulders, “You can stay here…I'll protect you.”
It had been two days since she had left and Inuyasha hadn't come for her. She knew, if she had gone down the well, he would've. Somehow, she knew that coming here would let him know she was serious. She always ran home. This time was different. She really wanted to get at him this time. Knowing Inuyasha, though, he would come out of jealousy or spite of Kouga. Just then, Kouga darted out in front of her, ready to pounce on whatever was approaching. Kagome looked up and saw Sango and Shippo, descending on Kirara.
“KAGOME!” Shippo shouted.
“Hello, Kagome” Sango said, “We came to see how you were doing”
“Mutt-face isn't with you?” Kouga snarled.
“Nope, he's still moping around at home” Shippo said.
Kouga smiled, then turned around and took Kagome's hand, “I'm gonna go hunt some lunch” he said, kissing Kagome's cheek and speeding off.
“So, are you with Kouga now?” Sango asked.
Kagome blushed scarlet, “N…no, he's never d…done that before!” she stuttered, rubbing her cheek.
“Are you doing ok?” Sango asked worriedly.
“I'm ok…I can't believe that baka hasn't tracked me down yet, though!”
“He's really upset” Sango said, “He just pouts and paces and mumbles to himself”
“Humph” Kagome shrugged, “Did he say anything after I left?”
“He mumble something about `mangy wolf' and hopped off to Goshinboku” said Shippo.
“Figures…” mumbled Kagome, “It's no more than he deserves…he treats me like I'm nothing!”
“You know he loves you Kagome” said Sango.
“Well, he sure doesn't show it and I know he's never said it!” Kagome snarled, “I'm not going back to him until I know.”
“I'll talk to him for you” Sango smiled.
“Thanks, Sango” Kagome smiled back.
Just then, Kouga reemerged with a boar and, surprisingly, Ayame. He looked worried, “Kagome?”
“Yeah?”
“I…ow…wanted to ask you something” Kouga said as Ayame elbowed him in the rib.
“Yeah?”
“I want to take Ayame as my mate…I know you still love Inuyasha…it wouldn't have worked out'
Kagome fought to keep from rolling her eyes, “It's ok, Kouga…I think you should.”
“You sure?”
“Yes, I have one more place to go,” Kagome smiled and turned back to her friends, “You mind giving me a lift?”
“Uh…sure…where to?” Sango said.
“You can tell Inuyasha I'll be at his brother's”
“Sesshoumaru?” Shippo exclaimed, “He won't take you in!”
“I have a feeling he will”
“Alright, we're ready to go” Sango replied.
“Thank you, Kouga, good to see you again, Ayame!”
“Take care, Kagome” Kouga said gently.
