Chapter 7: Battle in the South
Another whole day, they traveled. By nightfall, they could see the shimmer of Naraku's barrier through the trees. This made them pick up the pace. Soon, they stood in front of the barrier. Inuyasha unsheathed Tetsusaiga, which upon sensing the barrier's aura, mottled into a bright red. With one swing, Inuyasha hit the barrier, which crumpled and faded away. They left the children outside the castle gates. Sesshoumaru took the masks off Aun and left Jaken with him to stand guard. Though, Shippo dubbed himself as Rin's fearless guardian. The rest of them, then, charged into the courtyard.
“The `Brothers of the Fang'” Naraku's voice rang out from everywhere and nowhere at once.
“Show yourself, Naraku!” Inuyasha called.
Naraku appeared in the doorway before them, cloaked in his baboon hide. His unsettling laugh chimed from all around them. He lowered his hood and showed his face.
“So nice of you all to come” he chided.
“Keh! This isn't exactly a friendly visit, we came to kick your ass!” Inuyasha yelled.
“Inuyasha…do you think that you can destroy me now that your big brother is here?” Naraku said slowly, “You have fought me before together and accomplished nothing.”
“Yeah right, you ran away, like a coward, and you kidnapped Rin as leverage” Inuyasha snapped.
Naraku's evil laughter rang through the castle once more as bits of demon slithered out from underneath the cloak and he rose above them. The cloak disappeared as his deformed body continued to grow. Surprisingly, Sesshoumaru was the first to strike. A blue energy wave erupted from Tokijin and slashed into Naraku. Bits and pieces broke off, but he retrieved them moments later. Suddenly, a horde of demons came down from the sky from all directions.
“KAZE NO KIZU!” Inuyasha bellowed and blasted all of the demons ahead of him.
Soon, everyone was busy fighting demons. Kagura, especially, took pleasure in destroying the demons she had once commanded. Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru stormed into the castle where Naraku had disappeared. The building was soon demolished by the swords' energy waves. The brothers tried everything, but every time Naraku was struck, he regenerated immediately. After destroying all of the demons, the others rushed up behind Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru. With a final laugh, Naraku spun into a swirl of miasma.
“Get back here, Naraku, you coward!” Inuyasha yelled.
“I have had enough fun with you for tonight” Naraku responded and disappeared into the night.
“Damn!” Inuyasha sighed, sheathing Tetsusaiga.
“What happened…why couldn't you destroy him?” asked Kagura.
“He just keeps regenerating…faster than before” replied Inuyasha.
“He couldn't do that before…he must have rearranged his body to make it easier for him” said Sango.
“Yes, once a month he hides in the basement and rebuilds his body” Kagura told them, “He is weak then, you were able to smell him before.”
“Yeah, we were close by, then, though” said Inuyasha.
“I guess we have no choice, then, but to return to Kaede's and think this over” Miroku replied.
“Come to my castle, it is closer…Rin will need a rest” Sesshoumaru finally said.
“Ok, but I would like to go home for a little while, we need supplies” Kagome answered.
“Keh! Fine, whatever…let's go” Inuyasha scoffed.
And so, the defeated group headed northwest to Sesshoumaru's castle. Only the excited chatter of the children and Jaken's scolding broke the silence. The adults were all deep in their own thoughts. All were stumped on how to defeat Naraku when he regenerated so quickly now. Before, they had almost destroyed him and he had to retreat quickly. They supposed he, then, could hide and repair his body before taking over another castle. Now, he did not need time to recuperate and there was no chance of blasting him to smithereens. They needed another tactic.
This refers to episodes 80 and 81, when Rin gets kidnapped and Inuyasha happens to show up.
