Chapter 6: Traveling Couples

“Do you think Naraku knows we're coming?” Kagome asked.

“Probably” Miroku replied.

“Naraku always knows we're coming…and he will always know until I cut him to pieces!” Inuyasha scoffed.

Obviously, he was still a bit grumpy because Sesshoumaru had made him leave Kagura alone. Inuyasha hated it when Sesshoumaru was right. He knew Kagura wanted Naraku dead, but that never stopped her from sending her `Dance of Blades' at him before. He wondered what was different this time when Sesshoumaru was there.

`Oh well, maybe she'll be of use to us somehow' he thought.

`Well, well, Kagura' Naraku thought to himself as he watched her conversation with the brothers from a single Saimyoushou in the forest, `You deliberately disobeyed me and led them to my castle.'

He watched the meeting again on Kanna's mirror. Since there was no sound, he had to read their lips.

`Should I kill her now…or maybe…' Naraku smiled wickedly, “Kanna, send Kagura out to meet Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru.”

“Yes, my Lord” Kanna replied coldly and left the room.

`Kagura…what will you do?' Naraku thought and smiled.

Inuyasha stopped abruptly and shoved Kagome behind his back. With his free hand, he drew Tetsusaiga. Sesshoumaru was already one step ahead of him. Seemingly out of nowhere, Kagura lit on the ground in front of them, fan at the ready.

“Hello, boys…so nice to see you again” she said as Saimyoushou buzzed about her.

“What do you want now, Kagura?” Inuyasha growled.

“Naraku has sent me out to meet you, and as you can see, he wanted a front row seat to watch the fight” she said, motioning to the hovering insects.

Just then, Kagura fell to her knees, clutching her chest. Her expression had changed to one of sheer pain and terror. Her body pulsated. The pain lifted as the beat of her heart matched the pulsation. Inuyasha and his company stared in wonder, not knowing what to make of the situation. Then, all was silent. The buzzing faded as the Saimyoushou flew away.

“What just happened?” Miroku asked as he tried to peer between Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru.

“N…Naraku…he…he has released me” Kagura stuttered.

She looked up at Sesshoumaru. She could tell he was as bewildered as she was, though he tried to hide it behind his usual expressionless face. Sesshoumaru finally took a step forward and offered Kagura his hand. She took it and he helped her to her feet. Inuyasha was still on edge.

“Sesshoumaru…how do we know this isn't a trick?” he snarled.

“Naraku no longer has nay hold on her, besides, she isn't a threat to the likes of this Sesshoumaru.”

“Huh!” Kagura smirked, “I bet I could give you a run for your money!”

“Is that so?” he replied with a slight smirk of his own.

“But, I have no reason to fight, I do not follow Naraku's orders anymore” she smiled.

“So, is Kagura going to join us now, too?” Shippo asked Sango, loudly.

They all turned to her. “I still want Naraku dead, I shall never truly feel free if he lives…I believe that Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru have the strength to defeat him” Kagura said triumphantly.

“Keh! Damn right we do! I don't care what you do, but I'm keeping an eye on you!”

Kagura smiled, that was a good enough invitation for her. It was now her turn to be barraged with questions from Rin and Shippo, as they walked. She only half-answered them. She could not take her eyes off of Sesshoumaru. She watched the way he moved, so gracefully, as if her were gliding over the earth. The wind played with his hair and ruffled his Mokomoko-sama. She wasn't sure if the natural wind did that or if she could do it, subconsciously. Sango and Kagome's giggling snapped her out of her reverie.

“What?”

“Nothing at all” Sango giggled.

“We were just wondering if Sesshoumaru had a bug in his hair or something” Kagome added.

Kagura blushed, very slightly, as she realized they had caught her staring.

“Do you have a crush on Lord Sesshoumaru?” Rin asked innocently.

“Hmph” Kagura shrugged indignantly as a little more color filtered to her cheeks.

Shippo and Rin smothered giggles. Miroku had overheard the conversation and waited for them to catch up.

“What's this I hear about a crush?” he smiled.

“Kagura has a crush on Sesshoumaru,” said Shippo.

“I never said that!” Kagura snapped, as she blushed more by the second.

“How nice…four couples traveling together” Miroku sighed.

“Four couples?” repeated Shippo.

“Yes, four…Kagura and Sesshoumaru, Kagome and Inuyasha, Me and my darling, Sango and you and Rin seem to be getting along quite well.

Everyone blushed, except Miroku, who was busy putting his hand places it didn't belong. Sango slapped Miroku so hard it echoed off the mountain.

“Lecherous Monk!”

Kagura gasped in surprise. Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes, but didn't look back.

“Your humans are strange,” he said to Inuyasha.

“Tell me about it”

Their group really was a strange mix. There was Inuyasha, a dog hanyou; his older brother, Sesshoumaru, a full dog youkai; Kagome, a priestess from modern Tokyo; Sango, a youkai exterminator; Miroku the monk; Shippo, a young fox youkai; Rin, a young human girl; Jaken, Sesshoumaru's impish youkai servant; Kirara the fire cat youkai; and Aun, a dragon youkai.

They stopped to camp in a clearing. They were still traveling through the forest that ran down the mountainside. While dinner was being prepared, Kagura decided to go for a walk. A lot had happened in one day. Finally, she was freed from Naraku, but why? She walked through the forest to a small cliff. As she stepped out of the trees, she saw Sesshoumaru.

“I'm sorry…I didn't know you were here” she muttered and turned to leave.

“It's fine, you may stay” he replied, “Those chattering humans give me a headache.”

“It's not so bad…I just…I can't believe I'm finally free” she said as she sat down.

Sesshoumaru didn't respond, but sat down beside her. In silence, they watched the sun set over the horizon. Then, Rin and Shippo came running out of the forest.

“Lord Sesshoumaru, dinner is read” Rin said, smiling.

Sesshoumaru got up quickly and helped Kagura to her feet. Kagura saw Shippo wink at her out of the corner of her eye and she blushed. Sesshoumaru smirked.

“Cute kids” Kagura remarked shyly, trying to blame her blush on anything but his hand, which squeezed hers before letting go. She followed Sesshoumaru back to camp, where Inuyasha was complaining about not having any more ramen.
