Chapter 5: On the Road Again
Kagome and Inuyasha joined the others in the childrens' room for breakfast. Shippo bounced onto Kagome's lap and started sniffing her. Sesshoumaru made a face.
“Well, little brother…you have finally chosen a mate” he said.
“Kagome smells like how mama used to sometimes, except you smell like Inuyasha!” Shippo stated.
“Shut it, runt!” Inuyasha snarled. He made a grab for the kit as color rushed to his cheeks. Shippo squeaked and hid behind Rin, who giggled.
“Sango, how come you never sneak into my room in the middle of the night?” Miroku asked as he put on his best `not-so-innocent' smile.
Sango didn't answer, but thumped him hard on the top of his head with her fist.
“So…has anyone heard anything about Naraku?” Kagome asked, blushing fiercely as she very obviously changed the subject.
“Not a thing” Sango answered.
“I still have a feeling that he is South of here and that we draw ever closer to him” said Sesshoumaru.
“Ya, I've been getting whiffs of him, too” Inuyasha agreed.
They thanked the owner of the inn and headed south once more. Everywhere they went, people bowed and cleared the path for them. They were starting to get used to it, though. Jaken rambled on and on, to himself, about the humans `finally showing respect to the mighty Lord Sesshoumaru' and other things of that nature. Shippo and Rin played a game called `I Spy…' that Kagome had taught them as the rode atop Aun. Apparently, Inuyasha and Kagome's mating had really gotten to Miroku. Inuyasha and Kagome walked at the head of the group, hand in hand and could hear frequent slaps and grumbling behind them. Every time they looked back, Miroku was caressing a red cheek fondly and Sango was fuming. He was obviously trying everything to lay a hand on her or to get her to make a midnight trip to his room. Finally, they stopped for lunch at the border to, yet another, forest. While Kagome and Sango prepared lunch, Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru scouted the path into the forest. Shortly after entering the forest, Sesshoumaru stopped dead and whipped out Tokijin. Inuyasha sniffed and growled, drawing Tetsusaiga.
“Naraku!” Inuyasha snarled.
“Close…” said Kagura as she stepped out of the trees, “Ah, the Brothers of the Fang, it is true, then.”
“What the hell do you want, Kagura?” Inuyasha growled.
“I was merely curious to see if the rumors were true,” Kagura said as she idly tapped her fan on her shoulder.
“So, you did not come on Naraku's orders?” Sesshoumaru asked coolly.
“Not particularly, no”
“We know he's close…tell us where he is,” Inuyasha demanded as he pointed Tetsusaiga at her.
“My, my…Sesshoumaru, you should do us all a favor and give your little brother some lessons in manners.”
“I'm afraid he's too far gone for my words to be of any use” Sesshoumaru replied.
Kagura chuckled and smiled at Sesshoumaru, who smiled back, slightly. Sesshoumaru put his sword back into his belt, turned and walked away.
“Oi, where the hell are you going bastard?” Inuyasha called after him.
“Let her be, Inuyasha, she wants Naraku dead as much as you or I” Sesshoumaru said as he stopped and looked over his shoulder, “She cannot tell us where he is, however, because she is still under his control.”
Kagura smiled, “'Til next time…” She took a feather out of her hair and flew off on it to the southeast.
“What the hell was that, Sesshoumaru?” Inuyasha snarled as he stomped after him.
“You're such a dense baka!” Sesshoumaru said without looking back as he strode back toward the edge of the forest, “Naraku is in the southeast, now we can follow her scent straight to him”
“Keh!” Inuyasha replied, but stuck his arms into his haori and followed Sesshoumaru without another word.
Miroku met them at the edge of the forest, “What happened? We just sensed a youkai!”
“Kagura showed up” Inuyasha scoffed.
“What did she have to say?”
“Nothing, but she showed us that Naraku is to the southeast” Sesshoumaru replied.
“I see…well we better get a move on” Miroku replied and led them back for lunch.
They ate hurriedly and set off. They followed Kagura's scent over the mountain and could see the purple sheen of Naraku's barrier from the top.
