Chapter 30

Now Tell Me I Got Something for You…At the Shops In Odaiba

InuYasha lay on his side on the floor in front of the TV, his head propped in his hand. He drummed the floor with his other hand. Kagome was taking her exam, and he was waiting for her to come home.

Suddenly Kagome opened the door, and everyone went to meet her. She was smiling happily.

“From your expression, I take it you passed,” said InuYasha.

“Yes!” she said, throwing herself into his arms, and then grabbing him and spinning him around.

“That's great sis!” said Sota.

“I knew you could do it,” her mother said, clasping her hands under her chin and smiling.

“I have to tell my friends,” she said, letting go of InuYasha and running for the phone.

“Why don't we all go celebrate by having dinner in Odaiba tonight,” her mother said as Kagome ran past her.

“Sounds great mom,” she said as she began dialing the phone.

“InuYasha, I washed all your clothes while you were away,” said Mrs. Higurashi. “They are in the top drawer of Kagome's dresser. Put on the chinos and red silk shirt, we'll go someplace nice.”

He could hear Kagome squealing to her friends on the phone as he went upstairs, and shook his head. When he had got dressed, he opened the door and Kagome breezed past him on her way in to get changed and closed the door behind her.

“You there InuYasha?” she said.

“Yes,” he said, standing outside the door, his arms crossed.

“They're having a big party in Harajuku the night of graduation,” she said.

“Harajuku?” he said, scratching his head. “Isn't that where we were when they…wrote that article about us?”

“Yes,” she said, “but the party is at a different club. It's Club Moishi Moishi. It has spectacular views of the city.”

He began to growl, his voice filled with skepticism and uncertainty.

“Oh, come on InuYasha,” she said. “It will be fun. Besides, I already told my friends we would be there.”

She opened the door and stuck her head out.

“And my mom gave me some money as a graduation present,” she said. “I want to use it to take us clothes shopping at Decks Tokyo Beach tonight for clothes for the party.”

He sighed in resignation.

“Alright,” he said, “but just one thing.”

“What?” she said.

“No dragging me into any elevators this time.”

Kagome blushed and laughed.

“Okay, sure thing,” she said.

The Higurashi family and InuYasha took the Yurikamome to Odaiba. Odaiba is an area on Tokyo Bay that had once been a series of forts made on man made islands. Now it is a huge complex with malls, the Odaiba Seaside Park (called the most romantic spot in Tokyo) with views of the Rainbow Bridge, a hot springs complex, and the Daikanhamsha, one of the world's largest Ferris wheels, as well as numerous other attractions. They went directly to Decks Tokyo Beach mall and had dinner in the Little Hong Kong section. InuYasha had never been in a mall before, and all the noises, sights, and smells were a bit overwhelming for him, which made him quite subdued during the meal.

“Mom, can we go to Sega Joyopolis?” said Sota eagerly when the remains of their meal were being taken away.

“Sota, this is Kagome's night,” said Mrs. Higurashi.

“It's okay, Mom,” Kagome said. “Why don't you take Sota there? InuYasha and I have some shopping to do, and then maybe we will take a walk in Odaiba Seaside Park and go to Daikanhamsha.”

“Sounds like a lovely idea,” her mother replied. “Will you be able to get home on your own?”

“Sure we will,” Kagome said as she stood up. “Don't worry about us. Go and have a good time.”

“Yeah!” said Sota happily. “Thanks, Sis! Let's go Mom, Grandpa!”

Kagome smiled at InuYasha and took his hand, and they left the restaurant. She was very excited to be shopping with him, and they passed by various clothing stores until she found exactly what she was looking for. In the back of her mind, she still had a vivid memory of how InuYasha had looked in the club that night, and this influenced her decision. A small part of her mind admonished her that she was playing with fire, seeing what a reaction he had caused that night. But Kagome chose to ignore those thoughts as she looked in the shop window, and smiled, her eyes shining.

“This is it,” she said, leading him in the store.

He frowned and looked at the clothes warily.

“You sure? You looked in a lot of store windows before we got to this one.”

“Positive,” she said.

First, they went to the men's section. Kagome picked out a white silk man's blouse, with full sleeves reminiscent of his haori, only it had cuffs at the wrists. It had a deep V-neck that she felt would show off the beautiful musculature of his chest. Next, she chose a pair of leather pants. They were a brown and gold faux snake skin pattern, tight and low on the hips, although not as tight as the black leathers had been. She finished off the look with a vest that matched the pants. Then she shooed InuYasha into the men's dressing room and made him try them on.

Anxiously, she waited for him, biting her nails.

“Kagome!” he called. “Couldn't you have found something without these damn little buttons?”

Blushing, she was forced to go in and help him. When they came out and she turned to get a good look at him, she gasped and bit her lip. He looked every bit as gorgeous as she imagined he would. InuYasha began to feel a bit uncomfortable as several women stopped what they were doing and stared at him in awe.

“Is he a rock star?” someone said.

“I don't know,” someone else replied, “but he sure looks like one.”

InuYasha scowled and crossed his arms.

“Well?” he said. “Do I pass inspection?”

“Yes,” said Kagome. “The outfit is perfect. Go change back into your clothes now.”

He put his hands on his hips and frowned at her in exasperation.

“Okay, okay, I'm coming,” she said, pushing him into the dressing room booth ahead of her.

Next, they went to the women's section of the store. Kagome chose gold leather, form-fitting minidress, with short sleeves that clung to her upper arms and a high collar with a slit in front. When she came out of the dressing room in it, InuYasha nearly had a heart attack because it fit her like a glove. Jealously, he scanned the other shoppers to see who was looking at her. Sure enough, the men in the store were surreptitiously checking her out. InuYasha growled and steered her back into the dressing room.

“What's the matter?” she said. “Don't you like the dress?”

“The other males in this store like it too much on you,” he growled. “Get changed immediately or I'll be forced to hurt someone.”

“I'm buying the dress,” she said.

“Fine,” he spat, “but you are only to wear it to the club. At least these clubs of yours all always pretty dark.”

Kagome paid for their clothes and they left the store.

“Let's go to the boardwalk at Odaiba Seaside Park,” she said.

That was fine with him. The mall was beginning to give him the creeps. Too many false open spaces and the crowds were making him claustrophobic.

It was a beautiful night for a walk in the park. Other couples were strolling on the boardwalk, looking at the city lights reflected on the bay and the Rainbow Bridge. Kagome sighed, taking InuYasha's hand and leaning on his shoulder as they walked.

“This is the most romantic spot in Tokyo,” she said. “I always dreamed of coming here with a boyfriend.”

InuYasha squeezed her hand and didn't say anything. `Here, I'm her boyfriend,' he thought. `In the Feudal era, I'm what? How can I proclaim her my mate there when it might put her in further danger?'

It scared him to think what an enemy might do to her if they found out she was his mate. He did not want her to be used as a tool to get to him. And yet…she deserved some kind of commitment from him, or at least the promise of one.

“Let's go to Daikanhamsha,” she said.

“What's that?” he asked.

She pointed and he looked up to see a huge, spinning wheel with spokes of colored light.

“What is that thing?” he said.

“You ride on it,” she said. “Come on, I'll show you.”

They walked over and got a gondola all to themselves. It took them up, and Tokyo was spread out before them, all its many lights and buildings.

InuYasha turned to look at Kagome. She was gazing out at the city, not looking at him, and his heart twisted as he sought the right words to say.

“Kagome, we need to talk,” he said. “It's about time we discussed the status of our relationship in the Feudal era.”

She turned to look at him, the lights from the night time city reflected in her eyes. He could see the wariness and hesitation there.

“To proclaim you as my mate in the Feudal era at this time is dangerous,” he said. “I'm afraid it might make you more vulnerable to my enemies.”

“I understand,” she said softly.

“I want to proclaim to all of Japan in my time that you are my mate,” he said, his voice tinged with anguish. “But the last thing you and I need is for Naraku to try and use our commitment to each other to his advantage.”

She turned away, and looked down at her lap, her long hair almost obscuring her face.

“Kagome, look at me,” he said, gently turning her face back towards him. “After we defeat Naraku, I promise I will proclaim you as my mate, even marry you as the human custom goes if that's what you want.”

“You would marry me?” she said wonderingly.

He took her in his arms and hugged her tight.

“I love you,” he said. “Of course I would do that, if that's what you wanted.”

As he held her, InuYasha felt her tears on his neck, and he got worried.

“What's the matter?” he said. “Why are you crying?”

“Its just…I never thought…” Kagome took a deep, shuddering breath. “Thank you…I would love to be your wife after we defeat Naraku.”

InuYasha felt like a huge weight had been lifted off his chest. He tilted her head up and gave her a lingering, tender, kiss.
