Chaotic Living
Chapter 8
Time Alone
With a lot of free time on her hands Kagome decided to train the girl for the evening. It would give her something to do and Kaede would be able to rest. All she had to do was watch the children and she enjoyed that. Kaede also thought that the shy girl would get more from someone younger. Kagome was much closer to the girl's age than Kaede.
As Kaede had described the girl was shy and timid. She was only sixteen years old, with short black hair, brown eyes, and she was wearing miko robes. Her powers had only surfaced and she wasn't powerful but she wanted to learn how to control what little power she had. Probably as a means to raise her self esteem.
Kagome too was wearing miko robes with her hair in a high ponytail. She was currently teaching the girl how to focus her power into one area of the body. She was trying to get the girl to bring the power into her right hand so she can see for herself what it looked like and could do it in the future if she were to ever get into a hand to hand fight with a youkai.
“You have to concentrate and bring your power to the surface, in this case your right hand.” Kagome explained. “Remember to be careful and be patient Nami.”
“H-hai.” Nami nodded. She lifted her right hand and closed her eyes. She concentrated and did what she could but she still couldn't do it yet. “I can't do it.”
Kagome moved closer to her and put a hand on her shoulder. “It takes time. It's different for everyone. You have to try hard though. Here I'll show you.” She held up her hand and soon enough a bright blue light surrounded her hand. It looked as if a flame engulfed it. “See it's not so hard.”
“It's easy for you.” Nami said as she looked at the ground. “You're a stronger miko than I am. I've heard you were the most powerful miko yet.”
“I'm sure that's not true. It took me years to be able to be the miko I am. You can be a great miko too but you have to try hard and be willing to do it. You can't have doubts and negative thoughts.” Kagome smiled in reassurance. “Now try it once more.”
Nami took a deep breath and straightened up. She closed her eyes and concentrated hard. When she opened her eyes to see if it was working a bright light flashed around her hand but then disappeared as soon as it happened. Her eyes widened in surprise and her mouth opened in awe. “I did it!” She exclaimed.
“Hai.” Kagome smiled. “See it wasn't so hard. You broke your concentration as soon as you saw the light. If you didn't you would still be able to see your power. I think that's the end of the lesson. My kids are probably hungry.”
“But you're so young.” Nami said. “You have kids already?”
“Well Shippo is six years old but he's adopted and my youngest is only one.” Kagome said. “I guess I'm young but I do love them.”
“I wish I could find someone.” Nami sighed.
“You're only sixteen. You still have a long way ahead of you.” Kagome smiled.
“Hai, but you got married when you were eighteen so doesn't that mean you knew your husband for a long time before that?” Nami asked.
“I was with him for a year before we got married.” Kagome said. “There were lots of...complications.”
“Did you have a lot of problems with youkai?” Nami asked.
“Only some youkai choose to be bad. I did happen to cross some of them but not many.” Kagome said. “That's why you have to learn to control your powers. The youkai that aren't nice may come after you. You have to remember that not all of them will attack and you may never be attacked.”
“Hai.” Nami said. “I'm afraid I'll be attacked and won't know what to do. I try to avoid youkai.”
“You have to remember not all youkai are bad.” Kagome said. “My husband is a hanyou and my adopted son is a full kitsune youkai. I know lots of youkai.”
“Really?” Nami asked.
“Hai. My husband, my mate protects me.” Kagome smiled. “He's been injured plenty of times, although most of it was because of his jealousy issues...But that's not the point. Anyways you just have to...Quiet!”
“What?” Nami said.
Kagome stepped in front of Nami. “Something is coming.” She said. “Go into the house and get Kaede-sama.”
“Why? What's wrong?” Nami asked.
“Just do it!” Kagome shouted.
In front of them appeared a human looking youkai. He had pointy ears, green eyes, and short spiky blond hair with green streaks. He was wearing baggy leather pants with a white tank top. He stood straight with his arms crossed. He looked around and spotted Kagome. He smirked.
“So you're the infamous miko Kagome.” The youkai said.
“Who I am is none of your concern. Get off this property at once!” Kagome said.
“Oh but who you are is my concern.” The youkai laughed. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Yasuo.”
“I don't care.” Kagome said sternly. She moved to completely shield Nami with her body. The girl was too afraid to move.
“But you should. I was sent to kill you and with your hanyou gone I should have no problem eliminating you.” Yasuo smiled.
“So you waited for a chance to challenge me while my mate was away? Were you that scared of him?” Kagome asked.
“No, I don't associate with hanyou's he's not worth my time.” Yasuo said. “You on the other hand are worth a lot. I was offered a lot to kill you.”
“So someone sent you?” Kagome asked. “Who?”
“I can't reveal that information.” Yasuo smiled. “The time for talk is over.”
Yasuo jumped into the air landing directly in front of Kagome. She pushed Nami out of the way and ducked his swing. “Run inside and get Kaede-sama!” Kagome shouted. She shot some of her energy towards Yasuo but he easily dodged, still with a smile on his face.
“So you don't want the girl hurt?” Yasuo asked. He smirked and lifted his hand.
Kagome ran in front of her and quickly threw up a shield. Three small spikes came out of Yasuo's hand and ricocheted off the shield. She glared angrily at the youkai. He was willing to go so low as to hurt a defenseless girl? She looked behind her to see Nami huddled to the ground with her arms covering her head.
Luckily enough Kaede had sensed what was going on and stepped outside. She had to make sure Shippo and Inuko were safe before helping. In her hands were a bow and arrows. She threw them to Kagome and went to help Nami back into the house. Nami would only go inside enough to be protected but still able to see the fight.
Kagome readied an arrow and aimed it at the youkai in the sky. “Leave now. This is your last warning.” Kagome glared angrily at him.
“Warning?” Yasuo laughed. “A miko like you can't scare me!”
Yasuo then swooped down towards her and slashed at her arm. She was able to dodge at the last second with only a flesh wound instead of a deep cut. Kagome aimed once again and released the arrow. Yasuo did exactly as she expected and dodged right. In doing so he was hit with her arrow and purification power. “How?” Yasuo asked.
“I predicted your movements.” Kagome said. “Baka.”
Yasuo then opened his mouth in a silent yell before falling to the ground and disappearing. Kagome sighed and dropped the bows and arrows to the ground. It had been a long time since she had fought someone. She was almost afraid her skills had diminished since the last incident. Luckily they hadn't.
Kagome sank to the ground holding her arm. “Kagome are you okay?” Kaede asked as she ran to her.
“Hai, I'm fine. Luckily I was able to dodge most of his claws.” Kagome said. “It's only a cut.”
“That's not cut. Those are pretty deep.” Kaede said. “Come inside and we'll clean you up.”
“Hai.” Kagome stood and followed Kaede inside.
Kaede pulled out the first aid kit and cleaned Kagome's wounds. She hissed as the medicine was being applied but gritted her teeth and ignored it as best as she could. Kaede then put a bandage over it.
“Inuyasha's not going to like this.” Kagome sighed.
“He's going to have one big lecture for you when he gets back.” Kaede laughed.
“Okaa-san are you okay?” Shippo asked. He walked into the living room with Inuko in his traveling stroller seat.
“Hai, I'm fine Shippo.” Kagome smiled. “Thanks for watching Inuko and staying put.”
“Hai!” Shippo exclaimed.
“Gomen nasai Kagome-sama.” Nami said from her seat beside her.
“For what?” Kagome asked.
“For not doing what you said.” Nami looked at the carpet.
“It's alright. No one was hurt. I asked too much of you.” Kagome said.
“I'm going to work hard now though! So if this happens again I won't do what I did!” Nami said with confidence.
“Hai.” Kagome smiled.
“Nami, your mother is here.” Kaede saw the car pull into the driveway.
“Thank you for your lesson.” Nami bowed and left.
“I believe you were able to boost her self esteem a little bit.” Kaede said.
“I hope so. She'll need it.” Kagome sighed. She looked to Shippo and Inuko. “How about we go home and have some dinner?”
“Hai!” Shippo answered. Inuko just shouted happily in baby nonsense.
“Thanks for having us.” Kagome stood and hugged Kaede. “I'll see you later. Let me know if you need anything.”
“It was nothing and the same goes for you.” Kaede smiled and walked them to the door.
“Ja ne!” Kagome waved from the street and headed home.
-------------------
Later that night Kagome tossed and turned in bed. She was once again having a nightmare. She could see hundreds of people in the city. None of them were moving. It was silent and no one was doing a thing. They were all in positions of agony. Like they were screaming before they were stilled. Many of them were covering their ears with their mouths open in screams.
Kagome could only watch. Her own body was stilled. Not because of anything she just couldn't will herself to move. The scene in front of her was just too shocking. That's when she heard it, a maniacal laugh. She looked up and saw a figure standing on top of one of the tallest buildings in the area. They were standing on Tokyo Tower laughing.
She took one step towards the figure and as soon as she did the people started moving. They were all screaming and running away from Tokyo Tower. Kagome fought against the hundreds of people running in the opposite direction her. She needed to get closer, to see the figure.
It seemed like the closer she got the further away the figure seemed. The screaming was starting to be too much for her. Her ears were starting to wring and she was growing tired from running against the crowd. The screams were getting louder and louder. She couldn't take it anymore.
She dropped to her knees and covered her ears. “Stop it.” She said. “STOP IT!”
“Stop!” She sat up and screamed. She panted as she brought a hand to her forehead. She was covered in sweat. `Just another dream' She thought.
Kagome kicked off the covers and got out of bed. She walked into the kitchen to get a drink of water. After gulping down a full cup she set it down and headed to her room again. Just as she was about to walk into her room she saw Shippo walking towards her.
“Shippo? What's wrong?” Kagome asked.
“I had a bad dream. That you got hurt worse from the youkai.” Shippo said sadly. She could tell he was trying hard not to cry.
“I'm fine Shippo. I was just grazed by his claws.” Kagome reassured him. “Come on, how about you sleep with me tonight.”
“Really?” Shippo asked.
“Hai.” Kagome smiled. She held out her hand and he grabbed it. They walked into the room. Shippo jumped onto the bed and wriggled under the covers. Kagome laid down and hugged him to her. She felt much better with Shippo around.
Shippo fell asleep much faster than Kagome. She laid awake a little longer wondering why the dream was stronger than before. Was it because of the youkai attack earlier? Could it have been from something else? The youkai did mention that he was attacking because Inuyasha was gone. Was it because he wasn't around that her dream was so strong?
Kagome sighed and decided not to think about it. She pulled the blanket up higher over her and went to sleep.
