Chapter 4
A dinner to remember

Inside the house, Kagome led Enraku towards the kitchen. The smells of all the food her mother was cooking made her stomach growl loudly in hunger. Blushing brightly, she looked back at Enraku and clutched her stomach. “I’d offer to give you a tour, but I think my stomach will kill me if I wait any longer to eat.”

Enraku nodded and followed her into the kitchen. “By all means, let’s eat. I wouldn’t want you passing out of starvation during our tour....although I certainly wouldn’t mind helping damsel in distress.” The last part of his comment was whispered in a hushed tone so only she could hear. Following his statement, Kagome could swear she felt something brush against her rear, but as she turned to check it out, Enraku pushed past her and sat down at the kitchen table.

I could have sworn.....did he just pat my butt?!?!

Her mind instantly traveled back 500 years in the past, her thought immediately turning to Miroku. She stared at Enraku...but not really at him, more through him. Now that she thought about it, he did look a lot like the lecherous monk....the two could be brothers! Shaking her head at the thought, she planted herself down in a chair across from her guest. Kagome watched Enraku’s mannerisms, and began to realize that he reminded her a lot of Miruko. Maybe that’s why he seems so familiar, she thought to herself.

“I hope everyone’s hungry, I’ve made plenty to eat.” Her mother broke the silence, placing several bowls on the table. Absently, Kagome reached out for the bowl and spooned several spoonfuls onto her plate.

“Where’s Sota and Grandpa mom?”

“Oh, they’re out fishing. They probably won’t be back till later tonight.”

Silence soon filled the room again, as they all ate, each in their own thoughts.
Kagome’s mind was once again back in the past, thinking of Miruko and InuYasha. She wondered if he was still waiting by the well for her to return.

Miruko would occasionally glance over at Kagome between bites, in his mind trying to piece together what he knew about the girl mentioned in the journal, and what he could see of the girl sitting across from him. He had no idea that as he was thinking of how to bring up the topic, Kagome was trying to figure out how to find a few more similarities between her dinner guest and Miruko. Enraku would soon give her all the evidence she would need with his next statement.

“So Kagome, I’ve heard you’re interested in Feudal Japan. I have a book that you might be interested in. It’s a journal written by one of my ancestors.”

“Really? That’s interesting.” She said with a nervous voice, shooting a glare in her mother’s direction. “What sort of things did he talk about?”

“Mostly about women....of course that’s until he met his wife. There’s some talk about demons...he even traveled with a few demons.”

Kagome nearly choked on her food. Could he be talking about Miruko? And if he was, had Miruko mentioned her? She eyed Enraku suspiciously, the grin that had spread over his face answered her suspicions. Enraku knew something about her, or he wouldn’t be giving her that look. Her curiosity was getting the better of her, but she didn’t want to give herself away completely.

“So he talked about women......what about them?”

“Oh, nothing really. Just about how beautiful some of them were, how he’d ask them to bare his children.....a bit strange. He also mentioned another girl who traveled with them. There’s quite a bit about the fights that they , and people that they saved.”

It was then that Mrs. Higurashi rose from the table. “Excuse me, I’ll be right back.” She called over her shoulder as she exited the room, leaving Enraku and Kagome alone.

“So you know, don’t you?” Kagome questioned, dropping her fork onto her plate. Folding her arms across the table top she leaned over, peering over at Enraku.

“I suspected when your mother mentioned your name. I remembered reading about you in the journal. I thought it was just a coincidence, but when I met you I knew you were the one.” Enraku beamed over at Kagome, leaning back in his chair to look at her better. “It’s funny, you’re more then what I expected, my readings hardly did you justice.”

Kagome shifted uncomfortably in her chair, her cheeks heating up with bright red blush. She wasn’t used to all this flattery, although she had to admit she kind of liked it. It was nice having someone admiring you. Her enjoyment was short lived however, when the thought of InuYasha popped into her head. No matter how much she was reveling in the moment, she couldn’t help but wish it was InuYasha noticing all the good things about her. She would be abruptly torn from her thoughts when Enraku spoke next.

“What was that?” Enraku raised a questioning brow, slowly rising up from his chair.

“What was what?” Kagome rose from her seat to try and catch sight of whatever had caught Enraku’s attention. Noticing nothing out of the ordinary, she turned back to Enraku. Her brow furrowed as she watched him move to the window, seeking out what had caught his attention.

“I could have sworn I saw a man run through your yard.” His eyes scanned over the yard. He could find nothing that even remotely resembled a man. Enraku shrugged and turned back to the table. “I guess it was my imagination. But I really could have sworn that I saw someone run through your yard, they were wearing bright red clothes, made them kind of hard to miss.”

Kagome stiffened in her seat, her cheeks turning red once more, but this time in anger.
I told him not to follow me, she began to rant to herself. What is he doing here anyway? I can’t even have a decent dinner without him bugging me.

“Kagome!”

She knew who the voice belonged without even turning around to see InuYasha standing in the doorway. Cringing, she glanced to Enraku, wondering how he would take the interruption.

Finally mustering up the courage to turn around, Kagome found herself face to face with an unusually cheerful looking InuYasha. Even she had never seen such a look of happiness on his face, not even when her mother was tossing bowl after bowl of ramen in front of him. Not only was he cheerful, but he was wearing modern clothes as well. With a pair of black sweat pants and a red tee shirt, InuYasha was about to proclaim that he would gladly wear the pants back in the past, but as he stepped into the room he noticed the young man sitting across from Kagome.

His heart fell for a moment as he took the pair in. Who was this guy, and what was he doing with his Kagome? InuYasha took a step back towards the hall, remembering that his ears were not covered up. He was about to run upstairs to throw on that infernal bandana Kagome insisted he wear when Enraku stood up.

“You must be InuYasha. I’ve heard so much about you.” Enraku intentionally left out that he hoped what he had read about InuYasha’s feelings for Kagome weren’t true; he didn’t want his body and head to be separated. “Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. I was just explaining to Kagome all that I have read of you and your group.”

Feeling he no longer needed to hide, InuYasha moved further into the room, dropping down into the chair next to Kagome. “So woman, are you going to give me some food or what?”

Kagome was almost horrified. Even though Enraku knew of her ventures in the past, and knew of InuYasha, she still couldn’t help feeling uneasy between the two of them. She watched as the two seemed to square off in some silent battle that she didn’t understand. InuYasha glared directly back at Enraku as he glared at InuYasha. Their voices when they spoke to each other were unusually tight.

“So, you know about Kagome’s trips to the past?”

“Yes, I know quite a bit. I know a little of each of you.” Enraku’s eyes finally shifted away from InuYasha. Little did he know that the staring contest the two had been having was InuYasha’s way of telling Enraku to back off. When Enraku looked away, InuYasha took that to mean Enraku recognized his claim over Kagome and would not bother anymore.

Enraku however, had no idea what the staring had meant, and had no intention of backing off from Kagome. In fact, it had only made choose to take more aggressive actions to get the beautiful young woman away from the hanyou.
Kagome remained silent as she tossed a plate full of food in front of InuYasha. Had she known what either of the two were thinking, she probably would have been blushing from head to toe. “InuYasha, I told you not to come here. I was going to be on my way back once dinner was done.”

“Shush wench, I didn’t come here to hear you yap.” He growled at Kagome with a mouthful of food.

“Then why did you come here InuYasha?” Enraku could not hid the contempt in his voice. Kagome hadn’t noticed, but InuYasha had. Enraku didn’t know how lucky he was that he had left Tessaiga upstairs in Kagome’s room.

”Last time I checked, you weren’t Kagome so I think you should keep your nose out of my business.” InuYasha glowered in Enraku’s direction, unable to suppress the low growl that had risen from the confines of his throat.

“Well InuYasha, why are you here? I’d like to know that myself.” Kagome realized it was time for her to step in before poor Enraku found himself missing a few limbs.

InuYasha’s growl came to a halt as he turned his attention to Kagome. “Don’t worry about it woman, you’ll find out as soon as you’re done with your dinner and we can get back to my time.”

InuYasha finished up the last of his food and pushed his plate away. He could smell the anger that was rising in the human across from him, but with that anger also came the smell of fear. The stench was making him nauseous. “Well, dinner’s done.” InuYasha declared as he leapt to his feet, pushing his chair back in one swift move.

Kagome didn’t even realize what was going on as InuYasha swept the girl over his shoulders and bolted in the direction of the well. He called out to Enraku “Nice meeting you, but me and my Kagome have things that need to be discussed. “

Enraku remained in the kitchen, fuming. He watched as InuYasha carried Kagome off, noting what direction he took. Enraku’s face was a mask of red anger while watching the girl he had admired for so long being transported away to the past. She did not deserve such humiliating treatment, Enraku thought.

It had suddenly dawned on Kagome what was going on, but the realization had come too late. “InuYasha! Put me down!!!” She began to pound on InuYasha’s back with her fists, kicking her leg which were dangling in the air.

It was too late, they were both outside and headed to the well, without anything for Kagome to do but helplessly be carried off.
