Chapter 5-
Down the well
Kagome could feel the familiar tingle as Inuyasha jumped down the well, still holding her over his shoulder. She had stopped fighting, and now lay completely limp against him, plotting just how she was going to torment him when he finally put her down. But much to her surprise, once they retreated from the well on the other side, Inuyasha didn’t put her down. Instead he continued to run with her on his shoulders, making it nearly impossible for her to see where they were going.
In the future, Enraku had finally left the safety of the kitchen, and was wandering the grounds. He had noted most of the way InuYasha had taken, but was not completely sure where the two had disappeared.
It was true, he was a descendent of Miruko and Sango, he was one of a few. What he didn’t know was exactly how close to Miruko he really was. The young man not only possessed most of his predecessor’s powers, with the exception of the Wind Tunnel, but he had also inherited the lecherous monks problems with females. Countless times he found his hand wandering from his side to reach out and touch a girl’s butt, and just as Miruko, he also found a hand across his face shortly after. Of course he didn’t ask women to bare his children, but he would often ask if they minded practicing to save the human race with him. That also ended with a red palm print on either of his cheeks.
Enraku’s sense of direction was not as sharp as InuYasha’s, but he had a general idea where the two had went. The direction they had headed there was but one building, and that had to be the only place they could have gone. Before he could go into the small building containing the well, he remembered that Kagome had forgotten her present. Returning hastily back into the kitchen he snatched the small box containing the jewel shard. After shoving the box in his pocket he rushed back towards the well.
Slowly pushing the door open he craned his neck through the opening, surprised to find that he was alone. He remained just inside the doorway hoping to hear the pair that had escaped, but was only welcomed with silence.
Taking a few more steps inside the building, he looked to the well, wondering if they had gone into it. It was the only place in the small building there was to hide. Carefully he peered over the side, waiting to hear the pair shout at him for spying on them. To his surprise, there was no one there. Nothing but a rope ladder hanging over the side.
His head turned from left to right, scanning over the room thoroughly in search of Kagome and Inuyasha. There was still no sign of them. How could they just disappear? Then it dawned on him....perhaps this was the room where Kagome could teleport to the past.
Excited about this idea, Enraku began to search for the portal. He tapped his hand along the walls, tugged on everything that hung off the wall, or dangled down. When nothing turned up, he turned back to the well. Maybe there was something that would trigger the portal in there.
Swinging both legs over the side, he slowly descended the ladder. With first the left then the right he would release grip on the rope ladder and search over the wall of the well, trying to find if perhaps there was a button or knob that would trigger the wells powers. Disappointed when he turned out nothing he jumped down off the rope, fully expecting that nothing would happen.
Too distracted to notice what was going around him, Enraku continued his search. The ancient jewel shard began to glow brightly. Around him the walls of the well began to fade but soon returned back into view. Enraku was still at a loss, but even more so when he abandoned his search, deciding to return back to the top.
Absently Enraku reached up to grab the rope ladder, not even noticing that things had brightened around him. He spun in his spot, his hand still outstretched hoping to encounter the ladder, but when he had come full circle and found nothing he realized that something was wrong. Something inside Enraku’s brain finally snapped. Wait...there’s something different, his brow furrowed at the thought.
Tilting his head back, he noticed that the sky was no longer blocked by the roof of a building. Instead of seeing the rafters of the building, he now saw a cloudless blue sky. Everything around him seemed different as well.
Realizing that ladder was now gone, Enraku began to scramble up the wall.
Each push upwards only added to the confusion. The scent of the air had changed, no longer the musty stall smell of the small room, but now a fresher cleaner smell of fresh flowers and grass. The temperature was different as well, it was cooler with a light breeze flowing. Something had definitely happened, he wasn’t at Kagome’s house anymore, that much he could tell.
The full effect of his realization didn’t hit him until he finally managed to climb out of the well. Not only had his surroundings completely changed, but the atmosphere seemed to have as well. He didn’t feel the chaotic rush of the future, the incessant need to keep moving, keep rushing by before life slipped through your fingers. Here it felt more relaxed, like everything was taking with a grain of salt, and you never thought past tomorrow.
Where was he? Where was Kagome and Inuyasha?
Enraku plopped down against the side of the well, examining the environment around him. He could only come up with more questions then he had answers, but one thing was certain, he had found his way into the past.
But now what was he to do? What if he ran into Miruko...or Sango? What if he....
So many question filled his head, until he was no longer able to think of what he should do. He was terrified that somehow by his coming here, he would mess things up. And why had he ventured here anyway? Kagome....of course that was why. He would admit, that his reasoning behind wanting to meet her, had partially been because of Miruko’s journal. But once he had met her, and could tell that the innocent sweet girl which the monk had described so well in his journal, was exactly as he had imagined. He wanted to get to know her better, that was true, but there was more. Somehow, amidst his reading, he had developed a soft spot for Kagome. He wanted to be the one protecting her, shielding her from the evils and responsibilities that lay before her. She seemed so vulnerable, yet strong at the same time. It wasn’t just all that, he wanted her to feel what it really felt like to be cared for, not the way Inuyasha half heartedly showed his affection whenever he managed to anger her, but to genuinely show her what love really meant.
He was smitten, he had been since he had first read about her in the journal. He remembered flipping through pages to find any mention of her name, to read about what she went through, and hope that she would find some kind of happiness. But all he ever really found was misery, pain that all centered around Inuyasha.
Enraku finally rose from his spot by the well, finally making up his mind to seek out Kagome, and tell her everything that he had felt. But what way would he go? He wasn’t the least bit qualified to venture off on his own, even with the small amount of knowledge he had gained from the journal.
I can’t just stand here forever waiting for her to return....but I guess I can wait for a few hours until someone passed by and could guide him to Kaede’s village. Perhaps they were there.
Plopping back down on the side of the well, Enraku began to twiddle his thumbs, hoping that someone would pass soon, before he died of boredom and anxiety.
