Chapter 6
Strange Encounters
Kikyo came to a halt a few hundred feet away from where she and InuYasha had been standing. She was no longer crying, her sadness had faded now into anger. How dare he make so many assumptions about her character!?! Who was he, but a mere hanyou, who would be nothing if it weren’t for the sword his father bestowed upon him, and the group in which he traveled with.
She winced, recalling his words about Kagome. The young woman was nothing compared to her! She regretted now not killing the woman when she had the chance. But if she had killed Kagome, would InuYasha ever forgiven her?
Hours seemed to pass as she stood there, contemplating everything that was said, and everything that she was thinking. Hadn’t it been for the Shikon jewel that she and InuYasha began speaking? Hadn’t he used her to get closer to it?
Anger began to swell in her, her small hands balling up into fists. “Damn him! Damn that InuYasha! How dare he try to get the better of me! I’ll show him, he’s nothing more then a fool if he thinks he’s going to get away with how he treated me!”
Kikyo spun on her heels, and headed back in the direction from which she came. She was determined to let the hanyou have it, regardless if it meant having to physically hurt him to accomplish it. Her pace increased in speed with each step, fully determined to find InuYasha and put him back in his place.
She found her way back to the well, expecting that InuYasha would still be standing there, but before she could emerge from the forest, she could sense that the hanyou was no longer where she had left him, instead sat a normal human man. Kikyo stared at the young man, her brow arching in curiosity. Who was this man? She could tell by his clothing that he wasn’t from anywhere she had been, but why was he here?
She temporarily forgot about her quest to find InuYasha, and focused her attention on the young man before her. Clearing her throat quietly, she waited for him to respond the noise, while slowly moving out from the tree line. When he finally glanced her way, she bowed her head in greeting to him. “Hello....is there something you need assistance with?”
Enraku stared at the woman, swearing that it was Kagome for at first glance, but realized after she had spoken that it was not. They could pass for twins, he thought to himself. This must be....this has to be Kikyo....Miruko mentioned that they looked alike, but he didn’t say exactly how much they looked alike!
Enraku slowly rose to his feet, keeping his eyes on Kikyo the entire time. He had only heard a few things about the priestess, mainly that she and InuYasha had been in love, and that she had killed InuYasha because she believed he betrayed her. But beyond that, he knew little else about her.
“Hello...perhaps you may be able to help me.” Enraku mustered up a charming smile, quickly running his fingers through his hair to make sure he looked decent. “I am looking for the village of Kaede....and hoping to run into an acquaintance of mine. Could you please point me in the right direction?”
Kikyo grew suspicious at the mention of her sister’s village. How did he know of her sister? And who exactly was this acquaintance of his? She had to find out who this man was, and what his motives were. Her only choice was to lead him to where he wanted to go, and hope that he would answer her questions along the way.
“What a coincidence, I happen to be heading that way myself. Care to accompany me?” She forced herself to smile, which turned out to be just the slightest twist of her lips. “My name is Kikyo, and you would be?”
She watched the young man curiously, noticing a slight resemblance to someone, although she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
“I’m Enraku...” He moved towards her, sweeping up on her hands into his own and brushing a light kiss over the back of it. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Kikyo, and I would be honored to accompany you, if you do not mind my company.”
A bit taken back by his greeting, her cheeks darkened a light shade of red. He was charming, she would give him that, but she still didn’t know what his intentions were. Now that he was up close, she could get a better look at him. She noticed that he carried no weapons, at least none that were visible, he wouldn’t have made it very far if he had been attacked.
“So who is this acquaintance of yours, if you don’t mind me asking.” Kikyo moved away from him, heading in the direction of the village. It wasn’t very far, but she imagined she could lead him anywhere and he wouldn’t have had a clue where he was going. Should she deceive him? Glancing over her shoulder at him, she watched as he smiled at her. He seemed so trusting that she couldn’t find it in her heart to do it.
“I don’t mind. Her name is Sango.” He intentionally lied about who he was seeking, knowing that there was bound to be some kind of tension between Kagome and Kikyo, and he didn’t need the woman who now had his life in her hands feeling aggravated with him.
“Sango?” Kikyo was caught by surprise. If he knew Sango, she wondered if she knew of InuYasha and the other’s as well. She had to know! “You know Sango? I assume you know Miruko as well then.”
Enraku could feel a smirk tugging at his lips, if only she knew everything that he did know, he was sure she wouldn’t be as kind as she was being. “Yes, I know Miruko, as well as Shippo, InuYasha and Kagome....but not directly per say....more through Sango and Miruko.” Satisfied that his answer wouldn’t give too much away, he went silent, following along behind Kikyo wherever she led him.
“If you’re searching out Sango, I’m afraid you’re heading to the wrong village. She does not reside in my sister’s village.” Kikyo relaxed slightly in Enraku’s presence, now certain that if he was a friend of Sango’s he had no intention of causing any trouble.
Enraku stumbled for a response. How was he going to explain this, without giving too much away? “Well....I was hoping that they would be visiting the village soon, I’m not quite capable of traveling very far at the moment....” He paused, trying to come up with a reasonable excuse, when it hit him. “You see I was robbed during my journey, and the thieves left me with no supplies or weapons....so I’m hoping to send word to my friends that I am in need of help without having to travel myself.” Smooth, he thought to himself, I’m a pretty good liar, although I do feel guilty that I need to lie to her, she’s not as bad as I imagined.
Enraku stared over at Kikyo while she seemed distracted with their journey to the village. She looked so much like Kagome, but the differences weren’t hard to notice. She seemed much older then Kagome, and harder. She didn’t have that innocent aura around her the way Kagome did, and she wasn’t as cheerful. A light smile lit up his face as he watched her. He could see why InuYasha had fallen for both of the women, they were complete opposites, yet almost one in the same in appearance.
“So, you know Sango as well?” He pried his gaze away from her, and began studying his surroundings, trying to memorize their path so that he may return on his own.
“I do, not very well. Our paths have crossed a few times.” It was now Kikyo’s turn to observe Enraku. Her gaze was a bit more scrutinizing then his had been, but it held just as much interest. She had to admit he wasn’t bad to look at, he had a pleasant aura about him as well. Kikyo paused her steps, turning back to Enraku. “You must be famished, shall we stop and gather some food before returning to the village?”
So busy trying to memorize his way, Enraku walked straight into Kikyo, without even realizing that she had stopped. Realizing what he had done, his arms flew up to catch Kikyo around her sides, so that she didn’t stagger forward. He blushed slightly when he realized he hadn’t bumped into her hard enough to push her, and that his arms were around her for absolutely no reason at all. “I’m sorry....I thought you might fall.” He quickly dropped his arms to his sides, taking a large step back away from her.
Kikyo only chuckled at his actions, and even more so at the coloring in his cheeks. “It’s fine. How kind of you to look after me.” She stared up at him, offering him the first real genuine smile she had given him since they had met. He really was rather nice looking...he smelled nice too. She noticed suddenly noticed the musky smell of him now that he had gotten so close to her, the thought caused her to blush along with him.
“So, shall we go?”
Enraku nodded, and took another step closer to her. “Lead the way.”
Kikyo nodded, but for several seconds she seemed lost. Where was she going again? Oh, to find food, that’s right. Why was she suddenly so distracted? She glanced to Enraku, and realized why.
So what is his story anyway? She thought to herself. She wasn’t sure exactly what his story was, but she was sure she was going to enjoy finding out.
