Chapter 7

The Circle Starts to Close: Miroku and Sango

Miroku had dressed and now sat alone again. His back was against the well and his head in his hands. He did not know what to make of things anymore. Everything was crazy, and there was a big hole in his heart where Sango used to be. He just couldn't believe he had lost her. It was inconceivable that he could live without her.

Just then he saw a flash of red and silver and groaned. InuYasha was on his way back. As he watched, the hanyou ran up to him and stopped short.

“Did Kagome return?” He said.

“She went back, down the well.”

InuYasha made to leap in, then stopped and turned to him for a moment.

“Wait here,” he said, “Sango is coming back to you.”

Miroku raised his head. His eyes were alight with surprise and hope.

“You just better not be that baby's father.” He heard him say as he jumped in the well.

As he landed in the well, right before the blue light signaled his travel through time, he saw a scrap of red clothing that smelled of Kagome…and someone else? He grabbed it just before the light took him away.

Miroku meanwhile had stood up, straightening his clothes and looking anxiously for Sango. When he thought he would not be able to wait anymore, he saw her. He had to keep himself from running up to her, which was his initial response because had been so convinced he had last her. Instead he tried to make himself stay calm. He still had to explain to her what had happened with his false accuser.

Sango approached him slowly, looking around. His heart constricted when he saw how red and puffy her eyes were from crying.

“So,” she said, “you're alone.”

“Yes,” he replied, “that woman is gone. I am not her baby's father, and she knew that. She just knew of my reputation and was hoping to dupe me into marrying her so her child wouldn't be illegitimate.”

Sangos eyes brightened and she smiled in relief. It made Miroku so happy he thought his heart would overflow. She ran into his arms, laughing and sobbing at the same time, and he held her tight. It felt like all the color that had suddenly come back into the world to have her in his arms again. But something felt different. Funny, it felt like she was missing some of her armor.

“You knew I was coming back?” She said.

“Yes, InuYasha told me.” He replied.

A shadow briefly passed over her face, leaving a trace in her eyes. He saw it, but could not guess that the mention of InuYasha had made Sango suddenly feel a twinge of guilt and remorse. Looking back on it she couldn't believe she had come on to the hanyou that way, regardless of the fact that she thought it was over between her and Miroku. Would she ever be able to look at the hanyou the same way again? And what about the affect this might have on her relationship with Miroku? She shuddered to think how Miroku would feel if he knew what had happened.

She turned her face into him, breathing in the beloved scent that was all his own. It soothed her and comforted her as much as the feel of his arms around her.

“So where is InuYasha now?” she said

”He went down the well after Kagome.” He replied.

“She was here?” she said.

Miroku nodded, his own eyes clouding briefly and his heart flinching with guilt at the unbidden memory of his moment of passion with her.

`How am I ever going to live that down?' He thought, `I never cheated on Sango, but after she walked out on me I had sex with a mutual friend.'

He tried to suppress the groan he almost made at the thought of what that might do to Sangp if she found out. And he didn't even want to think about the state Kagome left in. He almost felt sorry for InuYasha when he thought of what he would find when he saw Kagome. Then he blanched. The hanyou was going to smell him on her for sure. He staggered slightly.

“You okay?” said Sango.

Miroku nodded, not wanting to give anything away.

Sango let go of him, looking around.

“Shippo isn't back yet?” She said.

“No, but Kirara is here,” Said Miroku as the little neko woke up, stretched and came to rub against her legs.

“Maybe we should go find him.” She said.

Kirara was acting playful, and scampered away, around the other side of the well. Sango followed her.

“What's this?” She said bending over and picking something up off the ground.

Mirokus eyes went wide, his jaw dropped, and he broke out in a sudden sweat.

“Sango!” he called, but it was too late.

Sango stood up with her hands full of Kagomes discarded clothes, a confused expression on her face. Desperately Miroku tried to think of something to distract her.

“Did you know you were missing some of your armor?” he blurted out.

Sango paled, looking stunned, and then flushed, tears coming to her eyes. She realized that she had been so dazed by events when she was getting dressed, she must have left some of her armor behind.

Miroku was dismayed by the way Sango reacted to his question. As he watched, she crumpled to her knees, still clutching the clothes. He ran over to her and knelt by her side.

“What's wrong?” he said, “What did I say?”

“It's not you,” she said with a sob, “I'm sorry Miroku.”

“Sorry about what? I don't blame you for being upset about the incident with that pregnant woman.”

Sango shook her head.

“No, I'm not sorry about that,” she said.

“Can't you tell me what you are talking about?” he said.

She just sat there sobbing, her shoulders shaking, while he racked his brain about what could be making her so upset. She came back missing pieces of her armor, which meant she had taken it off. The last person to see her was…InuYasha. His face went pale and he felt momentarily dizzy. Sango moved, bending over and crying, and Kagomes clothes brushed the edge of his robe. Unbidden to his mind was the memory of Kagomes face as he made her come. He swallowed, flushing, and put his head in his hand. It was suddenly all painfully clear to him. While he had been screwing Kagome, InuYasha had been screwing his Sango. His heart hurt with it all.

He took the clothes out of her hands and took her in his arms.

“I'm sorry too,” he said.

“About what?” she gasped.

He involuntarily glanced over at the clothes. Sango turned to see what he was looking at and suddenly it clicked. Kagome was here and she took off her clothes, meaning she had no clothes on when she left and the only one here at the time was…Miroku.

The shriek of pain that left her nearly deafened him. He held her tighter as his own tears fell.
