Chapter 3: More Than Meets the Eye of the Beholder

Kagome finally composed herself, taking a shower and dressing in her yoga pants and top. She decided not to go to work and instead try and relax with some yoga. After the first five minutes or so she just became more frustrated. She couldn't understand what had possibly gotten in to Inuyasha. The night before he had been so caring and compassionate, as he always was. Then, this morning. She stopped thinking about it. It was too saddening to think about the harsh tone of his voice, and why on earth he would be so pissed off. Kagome gave up trying to be relaxed through Yoga and went downstairs. She flipped on her laptop and began looking through the files Inuyasha asked her to go over.
Inuyasha asked her, indirectly, to help him find out about one of his ex girlfriends. An odd request, but she obliged. Being a detective it was no problem for her. The girls name was Hiyado, Kikyou. She apparently had worked for the SFO* and was a big name up there at HQ*. She didn't have anything horrible on her record, accept that she was responsible for the 2015 outbreak of 'plague'. Which really was a kind of 'super flu' that wiped out half of the Kali coast, formerly China. Now that the UFT owned nearly all of the Asian continents they were renaming everything. She was transferred to somewhere near Osaka and was never heard from since. Kagome was having a hard time finding anything more on her. She didn't even know why Inuyasha wanted to find this information out. They were ex's, who cared what she was doing now? She closed the laptop and sat back on the couch. She couldn't seem to sit still, so she got up and walked into the kitchen.
The door to the garage was still open, and she looked out into it, as though looking into a foreign land. The sounds of children outside made her smile in a depressed kind of way. She hugged herself, trying to get rid of the Goosebumps that were forming on her soft flesh. She closed the garage door and sat down at the table. She looked around, trying to find something to occupy her when she saw "The Weekender" sitting on the table. The front page caught her attention. "A Local Lamia?" Kagome began reading the article.
Kagome ran upstairs, changing into the clothes she had picked out when she had intended to go to work, and sped to her car on her way to work. If she called Sasaki she would never get a straight answer. Best to go directly to the source.

Inuyasha drove to the beach. Normally he would have gone to the nearest garage and offered his services, but today he wanted to see the ocean. He had read the paper, all about his ex-fiance Kikyou. It had not only disturbed him, but somewhat frightened him. He, being a strong half demon, would of course never admit this to a soul. The simple thought of Kikyou being in town, or within a hundred mile radius, was enough to make him cringe.
As he drove he began to realize what an asshole he had been to Kagome. It wasn't her fault at all and he had no right to yell at her and cause a calamity. His anger and fright simply got the better of him. He would buy her flowers and apologize on hands and knees if that's indeed what it took. Kagome was by far the sweetest person he had ever been with, and especially that he had loved. He figured you can only fall in love once, so his feelings for his previous fiancée could never have been love. Perhaps someday he would look back and think that his feelings for Kagome were never love. He always thought cynically. It got him through his mediocre day.
He stopped when he got to the ocean overlook. The ocean was not visible do to the cliff he was overlooking. He turned off his car and got out, the automatic alarm system making a sharp 'beep' noise. Inuyasha took in a deep breath of the salty air and felt his muscles relax under the serene quality of the atmosphere. He closed his eyes and upon opening them looked out onto the wide ocean. The most gorgeous natural wonder. The harsh waves clashing against the base of the cliff, the soft ripples rolling through the water as far as the eye could see. Boats on the horizon enjoying the day. A truly calming experience for even the faint of heart. Inuyasha decided to call Kagome from his cell phone. He opened it up and hit the 'one' button. Speed dial. An old invention but never the less very useful. He idly noted that his cell phone was out of date. The picture was distorted when he talked for a long period of time and on bad days, when the signal was not quite right, he wouldn't be able to see the person at all.
The phone continued to ring. He watched his signal waver, the icon that flashed continuously while one waited for the line to connect. Soon he saw Kagome's picture. It was her on the visual mail.
"Hey, it's Kagome. I'm probably at work, call my cell or leave a vid and I'll get back to you. Peace." Inuyasha looked at her face, smiling back at him. He smiled then too, but quickly sculpted his face to be more sincere.
"Kagome, you're not just avoiding me are you? We have to talk about what happened today. I'm going to come home with dinner. I'll be home in a couple of hours, I'm at Ginsenshi Cliff right now. Isn't is pretty today?" Inuyasha turned the phone to face the ocean, getting a good view of the scene. "Anyway, I don't want to apologize to the answering machine, but I'll start there. I'm sorry Kags. Please, just see me for dinner. At say, seven thirty? Bye." Inuyasha hung up. "End transmission." the automated voice announced. "Thanks captain obvious."
Inuyasha threw the phone in his pocket and looked out a little longer before getting back into his Honda and taking off.

"Sasaki," Kagome said in a sweet sing-song voice as she walked into her superiors office with a copy of "The Weekender". "What's this all about?" she asked, putting the paper on the table.
"What? It's not your case." he said, not looking up at her as he continued to eat his lunch.
"I think I should be informed of these kinds of things." Kagome said in a clearly agitated tone.
"You are working on the cannibalistic murders. The Hiyado case has nothing to do with that." Sasaki said, looking up at Kagome.
"Well, I would still like to know things like this." Kagome answered.
"Kagome, you aren't the leader here. You don't need to know everything that goes on at every moment." Sasaki stood up, looking out his office window. "Take Mia for example."
"Who is Mia?" Kagome asked, not seeing the relevance.
"See? That is my point. No one knows Mia. Mia is a secretary, she keeps to herself, she knows nothing about things that aren't her business. She is happy. We are happy. Get it? You don't need to know every little detail."
"Yes. Sasaki, I need to know what is going on in my town, so that I can clearly deduce my facts." Kagome replied.
"Kagome. No. Get over it." he went back to his desk and continued eating his Tuna wrap. "Now," he said between chews, "Go home. It's your day off. I'll see you Monday."
Kagome growled slightly as she picked up the paper and headed back out the door.
"Good day Miss Higarashi." a robot replied on her way out.
"Yeah yeah."

Kagome arrived at home at four. She was worried about Inuyasha. It isn't good to drive with your emotions and that is the only time he drove. Most of the time he would be content with allowing his car to do the work, but when he was angry he would drive. He liked to know he could still control something in his life. Kagome had seen his anger, many times; but, this was the first time it was ever directed at her. It made her feel weak, and depressed. Just this morning she had been tempted to tell him her true feelings, then he pulls a stunt of this magnitude. She sighed as she walked into her house, throwing her keys on the table and hanging her coat up in the hall.
She went to her phone and turned it on. "Messages." she said clearly toward the device.
"You have four messages." it responded.
"Continue."
"Message one, received at twelve forty five, from caller 'Mother'." Kagome looked at the screen as her mothers face and voice appeared. "Hello Kagome dear. I was wondering if you would like to get together for lunch on Saturday. I would like to talk to you seeing as how I haven't seen you in nearly three months. And I would just love to meet this new boyfriend of yours, bring him along. Please? My treat. Call me back when you get a chance. Love love."
"Delete." Kagome said.
"Message deleted."
"Continue."
"Message two, received at one fifteen, from caller 'Private'." Kagome didn't recognize the caller. "This is a courtesy call. You may have received ten billion yen! Be the fifth caller now and -"
"Delete." Kagome cut off the caller.
"Message deleted."
"Continue."
"Message three, received at two thirty, from caller 'Jordan Matais'." Kagome looked curiously at the machine. "Like who are you? I was totally looking for Kris. Umm, but like okay. So if you get this message, like um, ignore it."
"Delete."
"Message deleted."
"Continue."
"Message four, received at three forty five, from caller 'Yashie'." Kagome couldn't help the half-smile that graced her features. He hated to be called 'Yashie' by anybody other than her. She looked remorseful then as she watched the screen. "Kagome, you're not just avoiding me are you? We have to talk about what happened today. I'm going to come home with dinner. I'll be home in a couple of hours, I'm at Ginsenshi Cliff right now. Isn't is pretty today?" the camera moved to show the beautiful view from Ginsenshi Cliff. Kagome loved it up there. It was where they had their third date. "Anyway, I don't want to apologize to the answering machine, but I'll start there. I'm sorry Kags. Please, just see me for dinner. At say, seven thirty? Bye."
Kagome looked at the screen which read "Delete", "Save", "Store", "Repeat". She shook her head, smiling to herself. "Save."
"Message saved."

Kagome sat in the living room, looking at some primetime show, but not really watching it. It was seven and Inuyasha would be home in about a half hour or so. She wasn't sure if she should forgive him right away or let him dangle for a while. Kagome had a vindictive side, a side she used often in play of her real emotions. Rather than crying her eyes out to Inuyasha, it would be much more effective to be a complete bitch, or just forgive him and let the feelings fester.
Seven fifteen. A jingling of keys and a small 'whoosh' of a door opening. Kagome nearly jumped off the couch, quickly catching her behaviour and walking calmly to the entrance hall.
She looked at Inuyasha, as he struggled with take-out bags. "Hey." he said calmly, not knowing how to break the ice.
"Hey." she replied, just as evenly. She sighed as her resolve broke. "Let me help you with those." she offered.
"Thanks."
Kagome grabbed two of the take out bags and carried them into the kitchen. There she set them on the counter and began setting the table. The pair sat in silence once dinner was laid out before them. Inuyasha had brought home Tai food. There was enough food to last them the rest of their lifetime in fact. Kagome picked at her meal, wanting to burst into a fit of emotion. She held her composure however. Inuyasha wasn't eating much either, which showed he had something on his mind. Inuyasha would normally have woofed down three helpings by then.
Inuyasha put his fork down, quite suddenly "Kagome -" he began.
"Thank you for breaking the silence." she interrupted. "It was killing me."
He laughed lightly, not looking up from his food. "Kagome, I should explain what was wrong with me this morning."
"I think I know." Kagome reached for the paper that she had set aside on the table. "The article about Kikyou. I think you probably reacted to that."
"Yeah. I mean, that's no reason for me to yell at you. I can't take that back. I'm sorry. But, I had another reason as well to be upset this morning." he pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket. "This was on my car. My Shelby. Which was locked in the garage. It kind of freaked me out. But really, I had no reason to yell at you the way I did." Kagome took the paper he offered her.
She stared at the words blankly after she read them; not understanding the seemingly random message. It read:
~ Yash, life is not as simple as it seems. "This world is a cruel place and we're here only to lose. So before life tears us apart, let death bless me with you." I couldn't have said it better Inuyasha. I believe everyone gets a second chance everyone can make more than one mistake. I really wish that I could let you have a third, but that isn’t how it works! You've had your chances, Yash. The darkness is spreading, seeping slowly through my veins. The loneliness I feel without you, is absorbed into my heart. I feel consumed by hate, and my inspiration is deceit. This is my fate. . . I'm consumed by my fate Inuyasha! The trigger looks so inviting, the loneliness triggers our fate. I could spend my life huddled in your warm embrace. But I'm too tired to carry on. So I wait, holding this dagger to my throat. You decide what happens to me Yash. Every time I think about you I metaphorically die, just a little. My heart is blackened, tainted, threatening to swallow me whole. Awaken my soul! Scream my name! I wanted you to show me love, show me the love that I never knew before! But no, instead you ripped away my pride! My love aches for you, My throat dries when I try to call you. My love never falters. My heart attacks my brain, and escapes me altogether. I fail myself! I knew where to find you and you were never there! I'm sorry. I'm rambling. I need you Yash. That can't be, can it? So you decide. My life, or yours? ~ KH
Kagome put the message on the table, where it lay open for all the world to see. (Providing the entire world walked in just now).
"Yash -" she tried to say something, the words simply escaped her. The 'letter' if it could even be called that, seemed to be one large rambling with the focus based on her despair. All she wanted to do it seemed, was make Inuyasha feel bad about her depression. Then, at the end; so what, she is going to kill either him or herself? Kagome brought this up. "So, she's giving you an ultimatum? Kill you or herself?" Inuyasha nodded.
"The letter just kind of freaked me out is all. I shouldn't have been so upset with you though. Obviously, it's not your fault and really not your problem. I was just upset, and you were there to take it out on."
"Yash, you don't have to be sorry. I guess I would be touchy too." she reached across the table and put her hand on his. "I can take this to Sasaki you know. I can get her arrested. That is criminal threatening."
"No, that will make things worse. If I know Kikyou, she has someone working on the inside anyway." Inuyasha said in a tone unlike him.
"It's an option."

"Local Girl, Hiyado, Kikyou, suspect in a series of bizarre murders. The Tokyo police department has been working hard on a discovering just what is going on in our humble town. There have been a series of bizarre murders, most of which seem cannibalistic. The Department is still not broadcasting any useful information accept that 'they are working on it'. However, Hiyado, Kikyou (age 30), seems to be the leader of another killing spree. Hiyado has apparently been luring boys to her home, and once she has them there sucks the blood from their veins, much like a historical vampire. She is said to wear a hideous mask, resembling the Gorgons of many mythological tales. Hiyado is also believed to be responsible for the murders of many young children in said neighborhood. A true Greek Myth in the making. The story of Lamia dates back to pre-BC. Lamia was in love with Zeus and bore him many children, but the children (all but Scylla) were murdered by Hera. Lamia took out her rage on the children and joined Empusae in luring men to their beds and draining them of their life blood. That is the myth come to life. Hiyado is said to be on the loose and if you see her contact the Tokyo Police Department Immediately."
Kagome stared in shock at the article. "The Weekender" was not as reliable as the "Tokyo Times" but it was better than "The National Blabs". She tended to take the word of "The Weekender". She wondered why Sasaki hadn't told her about this. It could explain why Inuyasha was being so testy however. It wasn't a good excuse, but it helped.Kagome ran upstairs, changing into the clothes she had picked out when she had intended to go to work, and sped to her car on her way to work.
