Chapter 4: The Way things Were
She walked away with a tear slowly rolling down her cheek. She loved him, she couldn't hate him. Sure, he had hurt her, but she loved him anyway. But after all she had found out about him, she always thought she wasn't good enough for him.
'I will never be good enough for anyone, if I can't be happy how can I make someone else happy' She took her time getting home, only to walk in like the undead and go straight to her room, staying there for the rest of the night.
'Of course he can love me, because I look like 'her', but I don't act like her. I wish he would see Kagome, not 'her'.
The next day, Kagome walked to school without Sango. She had gotten a call saying Miroku wanted to walk her to school, and that she would give him a chance. And as Kagome got towards school, she saw Sango running towards her.
”Come quick! It's InuYasha and Kouga!" Sango panted heavily, or to grab Kagome and run in the direction of the school.
'What could InuYasha and Kouga...Oh no...' Kagome groaned, gaining speed as she slipped out of Sango's grip. "C'mon Sango we have to hurry!"
When they had arrived, there wasn't much to see, the crowd had built, but you could hear the yelling. "Shut up Inukoro! You hurt MY woman! And I don't take that sitting down", she heard Kouga.
Then she heard InuYasha, "Yeah!?! Well, it looks like your wussy ass is losing, wolf!"
She pushed her way through the crowd, Sango in tow, when she got to the center she saw Miroku trying to calm them down. But, unfortunately, the damage had already been done. Kouga had claw marks on his arms and face, as well as bruises and a black eye. But InuYasha was worse off, 'And he thinks Kouga is losing?!?' He was bleeding heavily from a gash in the side under the ribs, swollen cheek bone, and it looked like a dislocated shoulder.

Kouga noticed her standing there and started walking toward her. But he didn't get very far, InuYasha stepped into the middle of them. "Mutt get out my way! You are between me and MY Kagome!"
”Hold on wimp, she isn't anyone's, so she sure as hell doesn't belong to your smelly wolf ass." InuYasha retorted.
”I'm keeping you away from her, hanyou! I saw how you tried to take advantage of her yesterday, don't think I didn't know what you were and what you probably wanted!" he growled at InuYasha.
She just stood there gasping at how he said it. How did he know? She didn't tell anyone and the only people outside InuYasha's family that knew was Miroku, Kagome and... 'Her'. But that didn't surprise her as much as what InuYasha said next did.
”Oh, so your crappy ookami youkai nose is good for something besides making you look more hideous? So you could tell... so what?" he looked back at Kagome with hurt eyes, "She already knew! And as far as I'm concerned Kagome is my friend, and I wouldn't let someone like you get near her for the jewel or her body." InuYasha might have been right, but Kouga had had enough.
'Youkai?' Kagome thought puzzled, 'Kouga is a youkai? I guess that would explain the pointy-ish ears...I just always thought he was autistic or had a birth defect…'
“She is too good and pure for you hanyou! You think you love her? Then why didn't you claim her as yours, you hurt her, and as her mate I won't stand for that from some one as low as you in the food chain!" He began to run at InuYasha, fists ready for an attack. Then she thought, `that's it, I'm not property...'
"STOP IT!! " Kagome screamed, loud and clear. She had enough of the fighting and their 'claim' on her; she didn't even know what they were talking about. She threw herself in the middle, shielding InuYasha, bad idea, Kouga was already going as fast as he could, he luckily withdrew his fists in time, but tried to save Kagome the fall by grabbing her waist and turning so he could break her fall. But it didn't help, because to be able to switch positions he had dug his claws deep into her side.
InuYasha watched as they missed him and collided with the concrete, time seemed to stop. He couldn't breathe, his heart had stopped, he ran to Kagome, blood pouring from her sides, and the Shikon no Tama, laid there on the ground, it had been revealed, and it was that damn wolf's fault. But Kagome was in danger, the wolf had to wait. InuYasha wasted no time trying to help her.
Kagome took ragged breaths, and saw InuYasha run to her. She drew a small smile to her face as he approaches and gently whispered his name, unconsciousness soon took over and she embraced the darkness that awaited her. InuYasha saw her smile and heard her call and finally pass out, he turned, and started barking orders, and with guilt, smiled inwardly. 'She called me, and not that wimp, she still has feelings for me I know it, she has to...'
“I'm taking Kagome to the hospital, call her mother and meet us there! Hurry!!" Sango ran off and he turned to Miroku. "Miroku get the jewel and meet me at the hospital!"
And in a flash he scooped up Kagome and leapt off jumped through traffic in the streets until he reached the hospital. After Kagome was taken care of the nurses insisted wrapping InuYasha's wounds, but with his attitude, he was a worthy opponent for those helpful nurses. Miroku had shown up shortly after, the Shikon no Tama in his tightly closed fist, and he kept it that way, not even letting InuYasha touch it. "InuYasha, this is something that we must be very careful with, just to make me feel better let me stay in possession of it till Kagome wakes." A mumbled growl was all he could here in reply. "Why don't you go stay by her in case -- in case she may wake before Sango and her mother arrives?" Miroku got no reply this time, he just walked away slowly toward Kagome's room.
He went in slowly, and sat down in the chair beside her and stared at her small form. It sickened him; her once lively and colored face was now placid and pale. He couldn't take it, he wanted to shake her awake, tell her he loved her, wanted her, needed her. And how he wasn't good enough for her, but knew he could make her happy. But he couldn't, she wouldn't believe him. She saw him with 'her', and it had broken his heart that night to see her face, her tears, he hated the fact he brought her to tears.
*Flashback*
Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision. But she knew the form that stood in front of her. She knew he looked guilty, and ashamed, but that didn't stop her doubt.
“Kagome I--” he tried talking it out but no use, that image of him and her, the embrace and her words.
“No InuYasha, I was a fool, I knew our short time together doesn't mean as much as the years you've known her.” The last couple tears streamed down her face and she wiped them away, faking a carefree smile. “I have to go home in a few days anyway, no point in keeping up the false hope it would work out, we will still be friends..”
She brushed past him walking back to her aunt's house, “And don't worry, I keep secrets for my friends, so no one will know.”
She wouldn't leave her room till she left Kyoto. He hadn't seen her leave or had a chance to say goodbye.
*End Flashback*
He waited by her side till her mother arrived, and then left the room when she arrived, having decided to give her time alone. He also needed his own time to think.
Waking into vigorous coughing, Kagome slowly opened her eyes, to a blushing Sango sitting next to a smiling Miroku. As soon as they noticed she was awake, they leaned in with worried glances on their faces. "Are you okay?" they asked in unison.
”Why do I feel like I've been trampled on by elephants?" Kagome slowly took in her surroundings. Her eyes settled on a table full of roses and small stuffed animals and chocolates. "Why am I in a hospital? And who are the gifts from? And if I'm at the hospital, then why are you here, Miroku?"

Sango butted in before he could answer, "I brought him to keep me company, and he was worried about you too. Your mother stepped out for a second and so I came in to make sure someone was here in case you woke up.
“Yeah, but this is sure a long way for Miroku to be, even if he is worried about me. I mean he lives in Kyoto. That's a long way to travel... How was the trip? Are you staying for the upcoming school year?”
“What are you talking about? Miroku has been here for over a week now." Sango was confused, why was she forgetting everything? “And school started last Monday. Don't you remember?”
“What day is it? How long have I been out?” Kagome was more frazzled then anyone else, nothing made sense, and her head felt like accountants were cranking adding machines in her head.
Sango shook, she didn't even mention InuYasha, had she forgotten all about him? "It's late Tuesday afternoon, you've been out since Saturday. School started a week ago and Miroku and InuYasha moved here a couple of days before that. Don't you remember? Can you remember how you were injured at school Saturday?" Sango became worried, and turned to Miroku.
He quietly stood and walked out, "I'll get the doctor."
“I can't ...I don't remember anything after the shopping trip you and I took the day before school started. I wish... I wish I could. But. I. Can't." she started to sob and bury her face in her hands. "I'm sorry Sango. I wish I knew, but I can't."
Sango realized she was panic stricken and gave her as much of a comforting hug as she could before leaving, before Kagome asked to be alone and for her to find Kagome's mother. "Sango?"

“Yeah Kagome?" Sango stopped and turned slightly
“I'm sorry, I just need a minute for things to make sense." she pulled her knees under her chin.
”Kagome... Anything I can get for you?" Kagome shook her head. Sango starting walking towards the door to leave then paused hearing her friend timid voice.
“Sango? ...Where is InuYasha? You said he moved with Miroku." Sango stopped and turned around, a sad smile on her face.
”I don't know Kagome, but I'll find him an--"
“I just... I just wanted to know if it were true, if he really was here." Sango turned and walked out of the small private hospital room. When she was alone, Kagome cried, as long and hard as she could. 'Why can't I stop crying, I feel like I should be but I don't know why. Am I crying for InuYasha?'
He was outside the room, leaning against the wall the whole time. She heard her forget and her ask of him, but what broke his heart the most was her crying. Kagome didn't deserve tears; she was too pure and innocent for them.

Soon the doctors came and met with Kagome, asked her questions and ruled that she had temporary amnesia. Talking to Mrs. Higarashi, "She can't remember what transpired over the last week or so but she is feeling emotional pain from something that happened during that week. So if anything or anyone is the cause of those emotions that might unlock the forgotten memories."
She glanced over toward InuYasha. She saw his ears flatten, she knew he had heard.
~*~Flashback ~*~
Ms. Higarashi stood in the doorway of the small hospital room "Thank You InuYasha." was all she said entering the room quietly, seeing the familiar young boy holding on to her daughter's hand.
”What? It is my fault she is like this."
”Maybe it is, but you are the one that brought her here. If you hadn't she could have been in more terrible danger then she was. So thank you, for taking care of her." she replied.
”I'm sorry. It was my fight, and I should have protected her. I didn't mean to disrespect your family." he lowered his head and stood to leave.
”And just how did you do that? You helped my daughter, no matter what was done in the past, or what happened during the fight. I know you have tried your best, that's all anyone can expe--"
”I'm sorry Higarashi-sama, but how is it you can treat me like Kagome does, I'm nothing but a bastard of a demon, and your daughter is a good person but she is also human. I do not deserve the kindness you and her show Me." he began to walk out.
She turned toward the retreating hanyou, and put a hand on his shoulder, "You are only a bastard if you believe yourself to be. You will see, in time, you will amount to great things. Besides,” she chirped and tugged at his cheek, “with those cute doggy ears how any woman could not resist you!" InuYasha continued out the door, with a confused look on his face. 'She is the weirdest woman I have met.'
~*~End Flashback ~*~
“But besides that Ms. Higarashi," the doctor continued, "She is stable enough to go home. If pain still bothers her, just give her some Ibprophin."
She turned her full attention back to the doctor and bowed slightly, "Thank You for everything doctor." When she looked back InuYasha had left, she sighed before entering the room 'Teenagers and their hormones...'
