Chapter two: Inu no Touchan
Ooooooooooooooooooooooo
Shippo's eyes narrowed in the dark, making him look like a real fox in the darkness of midnight. It was ten days after he left Kagome, and his new baby sister. He had no idea that Kagome and Inuyasha had gotten that far, let alone to a part of their relationship where they would be producing a child. He still shivered with the vision of Kagome practically being ripped apart. Shippo was there trying to pull out the thing that was trying to get out because he thought it was a demon trying to eat her stomach… only it was just a harmless baby with pure golden eyes, and un-matching black ears with her fluffy white hair that topped her head.
A burst of relief from the both of them that actually they succeeded giving birth without any help at all… it was surprising that Shippo actually was the `doctor' at the time. He just went in there and tugged not knowing he was actually doing what professionals doctors would have to study for years before they got the experience to help birth a child themselves.
Shippo was of course jumping with his childish joy and so was Kagome. Who laughed herself to fits of tears while clenching the baby. The pain of the labor didn't matter to her anymore since she was now holding a precious little thing that would change her life forever.
“You have to go tell Inuyasha.” Kagome had said to him once Kaori had turned a day old. Kagome's wounds already looked a lot better. Shippo was just enjoying his time leaning on Kagome's shoulder and looking at the baby that was at the time having her first real breakfast from her mother's chest. (Shippo always wondered what babies ate since they didn't have any teeth)
“But…” Shippo eyed Kagome shocked. “W- what about you? You have a baby, and…”
“And I'm actually healing faster than a regular woman. It's probably because my baby… is a hanyou too… and her blood helped me heal faster.” Shippo could only stare at his surrogate mother with absolute amazement. She was planning to move after that? Either she was crazy, or five times stronger than any Wind Scar Inuyasha could emit from the Tetsusaiga.
Shippo trembled at the memory, he didn't know if Kagome was actually alive, now that he thought of it. And Kirara was off to find Inuyasha right when Kagome made her first screams of pain. If Shippo was lucky, Kirara would find Shippo and take him with her to find the battleground where Inuyasha worked.
He wasn't. Kirara was supporting Sango already, and was flying around to see what the heck was wrong with Kagome. Inuyasha was probably worried sick somewhere… dripping in a mass pool of human blood.
Or worse. Demon blood.
Shippo made a little hiccup of fear before he continued to scamper through the crippled orange and red leaves that fall had left behind. The snow that was slowly starting to sprinkle on the top of his red head warned him of a storm. He still kept going anyway. Even if he didn't have Kagome's warm arms that time, he knew that she truly needed him at the moment, and he couldn't complain about the weather so freely like he used to.
He knew he was going the right way though, since he smelt the scent of oil on heavy metal armor, that made a good enough stench to track out. And since it was close, it meant that Shippo could probably catch the ears of a distant hanyou in one desperate holler.
“INUYASHA!” Shippo screamed into the air. He fell silent as he tumbled into a bundle of wet leaves, and started sobbing while just thinking back to Kagome giving him a final kiss on the forehead while she stood up to leave the hut she had given birth in, to get better scarves to protect her baby.
“Don't push yourself… I'll never forgive myself if you get wondered out there.” She smiled at him. “I know you're a smart boy though. You'll find him. I trust you.”
“Kagome.” Shippo was sobbing holding the edge of her bloody kimono while looking up with tear stricken emerald eyes. “D- Don't… Don't…”
“Die?” Smiled Kagome, finishing his sentence with a calm elegance only Kagome could muster. She tapped his head and he nodded faintly in return of her motherly touches.
“Yeah.” Shippo breathes as he saw Kagome slowly bending over to meet eyes with Shippo.
“No. I won't. I'm too stubborn, and I'm hoping this baby got that gene too… she won't die even if an Ogre attacked us.” Kagome actually had the nerve to giggle a bit.
“DON'T SAY THAT!” Shippo found nothing funny about this little joke, and his eyes only streamed with more tears. “Promise you'll be safe with baby sister!”
“Of course. Haven't I always protected you?”
“Yes.” Shippo murmurs quietly, he looked up to see that Kagome was crying too, hot tears lightly patted his forehead. Kagome's tears were warmer than his, it seemed, and he knew that it was tougher on her than anything. He gave her hands a final squeeze before backing away to go on his mission.
“I'm going to name the baby now.” Kagome says rather cheerfully. “Now you remember the name, so when Inuyasha asks, he'll like it.”
“'Kay.” Shippo couldn't help but crack a grin. He listened closely and watched Kagome search her daughter's features. Finally Kagome cuddled the baby, obviously the decision was made before she even looked at her daughter, with a last minute glance at the name-less baby, she announced-
“Her name shall be Kaori.”
Fragrance.
The Japanese word `Kaori' meant a soft, sweet smell, usually. And the baby Kaori was definitely a sweet smelling baby even if they didn't give her a proper bath after labor. She was a plump, healthy baby, and Shippo couldn't believe that he actually was willing to leave her side.
But it was for Kagome, and Shippo pulled his strength to run deeper into the forest. Near the smell of oily armor that he hated so much. For Kagome…
“INUYASHA! HELP MEEEE!”
Nobody answered, even a raving lunatic like Kouga would have made Shippo feel more at ease, but only the howling wind answered him and the increasing of snow.
His fox feet were built for quicker speed, and Shippo forced himself to run a bit faster. He remembered his own father… and even his surrogate father never gave up. He had to do that too. He had to will himself to stay alive to deliver the message. It's definitely a lot easier than delivering a baby, and Shippo had to do it just to prove he can be use to the team that always protected him from the dangers.
His heart leapt when his sensitive ears caught a clatter of swords somewhere. He found a building energy from nowhere, and ran so fast his ears felt like they would fall off. He stopped… in front of the biggest castle he had seen in a very long time. The top of the castle was able to be seen even if Shippo was so low to the ground. Shippo didn't know if this was the bad guy's quarters or the good guy's quarters until his nose caught the familiar scent of what he was looking for.
“INUYASHA!”
Inuyasha obviously had caught the wind and heard Shippo's desperate screams earlier, because he was conveniently atop the wall that held the inner castle. He sat like a cat, flashing his eyes over the frosted forest. His eyes immediately took in the sight of a battered looking Shippo, and his fierce gaze turned even harder, as he jumped down, and grabbed the fox in his hinezumi Koromo, an immediate warmth made Shippo dizzy and shiver with more vigor.
“What the heck are you doing here?” Inuyasha's voice- when was the last time he had heard it? It seemed a long time ago, because Shippo seemed to have grown accustomed to his own small voice in his head and Kagome's soothing ones. He sobbed uncontrollably when Inuyasha's bark like tone bit into his ears.
“What?” Inuyasha asked, a bit nicer this time, and filled with worry. “W- Where is Kagome?”
His voice suddenly rose, as he held Shippo level to his dangerous eyes. “Where is she?”
“Kirara- did she come yet?”
“Yeah. Kagome needed Sango, right?”
“She was too LATE.” Shippo spat bitterly, “We all were- we didn't know that Kagome-“
“What's wrong with Kagome?” Inuyasha was now screaming, catching attention of several guards, and a bit friendlier face of Miroku, who popped his head from the wall, and pushed away the guards who was stretching their arrows toward the tiny fox child. He jumped down the wall as well as Inuyasha did, and though he stumbled a bit, he was back on his feet with a merry smile. Welcoming Shippo into his own robes.
“Shippo! You have come to deliver us news on why Kirara asked help of Lady Sango, yes?”
“Yes! Yes!” Shippo gasps but looked frantically at Inuyasha. “I have to deliver an important- A VERY important message to Inuyasha. So important- I don't think I should be the one to tell you!” He was hiccupping, and shaking while snorting in his snot. He was just so overwhelmed to find Inuyasha. That he barely noticed that he was being led inside the castle.
After Miroku and Inuyasha got some sort of kid clothes from maids, and blankets. Shippo was lying on his back, looking up to see Inuyasha and Miroku. It seemed as if he was on his deathbed, and they were discussing his will. Shippo shivered at the thought so he lifted his body enough to look up at Inuyasha and Miroku.
Inuyasha's gaze was amazingly cold and yet soft with his worry for the woman he obviously shared hot love with. Thinking that, Shippo narrowed his eyes at Inuyasha and decided to tell him.
“Inuyasha, you and Kagome had gone farther than you meant to, in your relationship, huh?”
Miroku was there to stop Inuyasha from punching Shippo's head in. He looked rather interested in this conversation, but he still shook his head at Shippo.
“Right now we care for the health of lady Kagome, Shippo. Please tell us-“
“She was in pain because of you.” Shippo spat bitterly toward Inuyasha. This time instead of a punch, Shippo saw Inuyasha flinch with wide eyes and his strong shoulders seemed to have buckled.
“What happened?” Miroku snapped impatiently.
“She wasn't sick at all!” Shippo says crossing his arms. “I had a feeling she was pregnant but no—“
“PREGNANT?” Both Miroku and Inuyasha leapt to their feet, and Shippo wasn't expecting the two male friends to start screaming their heads off at each other. Shippo always had Kagome or Sango their to cover his ears for him whenever they did this. He was glad none were here, as he watched the scene in interest. Absorbing any foul language for later use to amuse his female companions.
“WHY IN SEVEN HELLS WERE YOU- YOU- MONGREL!!!”
“OH LOOK WHO IS TALKING- BUTT-CLENCHER!”
“I NEVER WENT AS FAR AS TOUCH THE—“
“JEALOUS, MATE? EH? EH? WE KEPT A SECRET BECAUSE WE KNEW THAT—“
“YOU KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO GET PREGNANT?
“NO! I KNEW YOU'D ACT LIKE A TOTAL MORON!”
“A MORRROOOON? YOU'RE THE ONE WHO GOT YOUR WOMAN PREGNANT- AND LEFT HER WITH ONLY A SWORD!”
“Can I please tell you what happened?” Shippo groaned. The two men weren't finished. After a bitter fuse and a threat of a good wrestling, they settled in a strange manner where they would snap bitter words once in a while, but their curiosity for what happened calmed them a good bit.
“What happened to Kagome? Did- did she get poisoned by a witch because she was carrying a demon's—“
“Obviously, so!” Miroku hissed darkly. “Who wouldn't? With you as the father.”
“EH? YOU WANNA FIGHT?”
“Guys.” Shippo groaned. “Can you just SHUT UP?” he lies back in his covers, and sighed in the contempt warmth. “She had a successful delivery.”
“Delivery?” Miroku repeated. He leapt onto his feet again, while Inuyasha merely twitched like a dying corpse. “You… YOU MEAN TO TELL US THAT KAGOME WAS SO FAR IN PREGNANCY…THAT… THE BABY IS ALREADY HERE?”
“Why are you the one that's yelling?” Shippo asks out of his own curiosity. Inuyasha twitched and jolted again. His eyes gazed over at his hands, and he quickly glanced at Shippo.
“Boy?” his voice was so soft, that it didn't sound like Inuyasha. “Girl?”
“A baby girl!” Shippo chirps happily. “Oh, she's so cute, Inuyasha. She looks just like YOU!” grinned the little fox. “Same eye color, a bit different ears… She's still a hanyou like you… I guess there is no such thing as one fourth demon, yeah?”
“Stop.” Miroku breathes. “You come to deliver news that Inuyasha is a father before me?”
“Yeah!” Shippo says happily, not knowing that Miroku was now planning to kill Inuyasha out of bitter jealousy. “Kagome named her already too. It's a really good name.”
Inuyasha was already heading out of the door. Shippo didn't know if he was either smiling like a sheepish drunk, or growling for not being there for her; Shippo decided to tell Inuyasha quickly before Inuyasha left.
“Her name is KAORI!”
Inuyasha stopped midstep, before his ears obviously twitched, telling the two of them that he had heard, and he left- faster than a bolt of lightening.
