Chapter 5

More Power?

Everyone waited for something to show up. No one made a sound. All you could hear was everyone's breathing. Kagome put a shield around the kids and waited. Inuyasha was getting impatient.

Suddenly he caught something come out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head and but saw nothing. "Sesshomaru did you see that?" He asked.

"Hai. I couldn't make it out though." He said.

A bird's call could be heard. Everyone turned to the sound. Soon others joined the call. All of a sudden everything got darker. Looking up they saw hundreds of birds.

They weren't your everyday birds. They looked like the phoenix bird but they were about as big as a human and they were black instead of red and orange. Since it was so dark you could barely see them. One of the birds swooped down and landed in front of the group.

He changed so that he looked like a human. He was bright red and orange. He had bird wings and he wore a bright orange robe with red wings all over it. "I'm looking for the miko named Kagome." He said.

`Not again.' Inuyasha thought. "Yeah and what's your business with her?"

"That's none of your concern which one of the girls is the miko?" He asked and closed his eyes. He opened them again. "Ah never mind." He rose off of the ground and landed in front of Kagome and grabbed her chin forcefully. "You must be the miko. I can feel the power in you."

"Let her go." Inuyasha growled. He was about to slice the birdman in half.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." He said. He held a sharp talon to her neck. "I could kill her at any time."

"What do you want?" Kagome asked.

"I was told you had the jewel and where to find you." He said.

"Were you promised power and the whereabouts of the jewel if you agreed to kill the protector?" Miroku asked.

"Hai, I did not see them but I was given power." He said. He looked down at Kagome. "How about you give me the jewel and I'll give you a quick and painless death. I'll even let your friends live."

"Okaa-san." Inuki and Shippo yelled. They had tears in their eyes. Reiha was also crying.

"Don't do anything." Kagome yelled. "If you want to help then stay in the shield."

"Will you give me the jewel?" He asked again.

Kagome smiled. "No." She said. She blew him away from her with her energy.

"You bitch. I gave you a chance to save your friends. Now they'll die with you." He said angrily. He made a bird sound. The sky was filled with the black phoenix birds.

Kagome thought about what to do. There were too many birds. They would never get out of this fight without someone getting injured. Then she thought of something.

"Everyone go near the kids." Kagome yelled.

"What the hell Kagome? We need to fight those things." Inuyasha pointed to the birds.

"Just trust me." She yelled. Everyone ran near the kids. Kagome dropped the shield but made another one to surround everyone. Inuki and Shippo ran to Inuyasha and held onto his legs.

"Is She going to be all right Okaa-san?" Reiha asked. She'd stopped crying but she was sniffling.

"Of course she is." Sango said. She was worried. She kneeled next to Reiha and hugged her. "She'll be fine."

Kagome looked up. The birds were just flying around in a circle getting ready to swoop down. "Kagome what the fuck do you think you're doing? Let me out of this thing right now." Inuyasha yelled and pounded on the edge of the shield.

Kagome smiled and closed her eyes. `This will probably take all my energy.' She thought. She concentrated and formed and arrow. She aimed up at the birds and released the arrow when it grew to be a white light.

It shot through the middle of the circle. "Is that the best you can do? You missed miko." The birdman said.

"No I didn't." Kagome smirked. She put a shield around herself and waited. The birds were about to swoop down when white rain came down. It slashed the bird youkai when it hit them. Cries of the birds could be heard.

"What did you do?" The birdman yelled as he watched all his precious birds fall from the sky. The white rain shot thru them. All of his birds fell to the ground dead. He managed to protect himself from the deadly purifying rain.

Kagome used the last of her energy and gathered it in an arrow and shot it at the birdman. He yelled in pain as he vanished.

The shields slowly flickered and disappeared as Kagome fell to the ground. Inuyasha ran to her and picked her up. Inuki and Shippo were by her side in an instant. "Is Okaa-san ok?" They both asked.

Inuyasha sighed. "She's ok. She just passed out."

"What was that?" Rin asked. "I've never seen anything like it."

Everyone gathered around Kagome wondering what the hell just happened. "I believe it was Kagome." Miroku said. "She must have used her energy to create a downpour of her miko power to kill the youkai."

"Why is she sleeping?" Reiha asked.

"Well she must have used all her energy doing it. I didn't know she could do that." Miroku said in awe.

"I didn't know either." Inuyasha said. "I can't believe she took down all those youkai by herself."

"I'm still trying to get over the shock." Sango said.

"She'll be ok right?" Inuki asked.

"Hai, she just needs some sleep." Inuyasha said. "We need to leave though, scavenger youkai will come for the remains."

Everyone gathered their stuff and walked until Inuyasha and Sesshomaru couldn't smell the scent of death anymore. They stopped and decided to make camp for the night. "I'll start cooking." Sango said.

"I'll gather some firewood. How about you boys come with me and help." He asked Inuki and Shippo. They loved to help out it made them feel useful.

"I'll go too." Kohaku said. He knew Inuki and Shippo couldn't hold too much wood.

"I'll help Sango cook." Rin said. She looked at Sesshomaru.

He sighed. "I'll go hunting." He said and walked into the forest.

"What can I do to help?" Reiha asked Inuyasha.

"You could get Kagome's sleeping bag out and lay it on the ground right next to me." He said.

"Hai." Reiha said cheerfully and ran to Kagome's pack. She rolled it out next to Inuyasha and grabbed her pillow.

"Arigato." He said and laid Kagome down. He rubbed her cheek with the back of his hand. He couldn't believe how lucky he was to have her. She scared him way too much. When he was stuck in the shield he was sure she was going to sacrifice her life or something like that.

Everyone came back with food or the firewood. They sat around the fire waiting for the food to get done. They shouldn't be eating since they already had dinner but their stomachs felt empty after Kagome had fainted.

No one would get much sleep, except maybe Sesshomaru. They would be worried about Kagome. Even though she's passed out before because of her miko powers didn't mean anything.

After everyone had eaten the rabbits Sesshomaru hunted they all laid down and tried to go to sleep. Rin had convinced Sesshomaru to camp with them. She was worried about Kagome. She still considered her as her mom. Once again she protected her.

Inuki and Shippo slept closer to Kagome. Inuki was on her left side next to Inuyasha and Shippo was on her right. They both wanted to be close to her. Reiha slept closer to Kagome too. She was her aunt.

After hours of worrying they all fell asleep. Inuyasha stayed awake for a little while longer. He watched his mate for any signs other than sleeping. He soon fell into a light sleep with one ear tuned to the world around him.

Everyone woke the next day. They were still tired but the sun forced them up. It was one of the cons of sleeping out in the open. They all checked on Kagome. Not once did she wake up during the night.

Sango and Rin made breakfast. Everyone waited for the food to get done. Inuyasha did nothing. He refused to leave the miko's side. Inuki, Shippo, and Reiha played with some toys near Kagome. They too refused to stray to far from her.

Sesshomaru watched as his brother worried over his mate. He looked to Rin every once in a while. Maybe he did care enough about a woman as Inuyasha did. He was very fond of Rin. Then he remembered he left Jaken behind. He would go for him later.

Rin seemed to enjoy the little reunion, although things could've gone better. With the jewel still present bad things were sure to happen. Rin had never realized how strong Kagome was. Apparently no one else knew either.

Inuyasha, Miroku, Sango, and Kohaku were more shocked than Rin and Sesshomaru. He was shocked but didn't show or tell anyone. They knew Kagome had great power but not that much. They'd never seen her do that.

All they ever saw her do was form arrows, shields, and some energy blasts from her hands. How could one miko have so much power? They'd have to talk to Kaede about it when they saw her again.

"What do we do now?" Sango asked.

"We found Sesshomaru and he knows nothing of our situation." Miroku said.

"I don't know." Inuyasha said. "It's not like we have any leads or anything."

"We should wait until Kagome wakes up before we do anything." Miroku said.

"I would like to stay with you guys until she wakes up." Rin said. "Is that all right?"

"Hai." Sango said.

"Is that all right with you Sesshomaru?" Rin asked.

He nodded. Of course he didn't want to stay. He was only doing it for Rin. He leaned against a tree and waited for Kagome to wake up.

"Why would someone want to kill Okaa-san?" Inuki asked sadly.

"Did she do something bad?" Reiha asked. Everyone looked at them. They were just children. They wouldn't understand anything that was happening. At least with Shippo he was there.

"She didn't do anything bad." Inuyasha said. "She just has something that bad guys want."

"Why doesn't she give it to them?" Reiha asked.

"Well the thing they want is very powerful and could hurt a lot of good people." Inuyasha said.

"So Okaa-san protects it from the bad guys?" Inuki asked.

"Hai." Inuyasha answered.

"Why doesn't she get rid of it?" Inuki asked.

"We don't know how." Inuyasha said. "It's been burned but it came back." He remembered how Kikyo took it with her in death. It ended up coming back with her reincarnation.

"I'll help Okaa-san protect it." Inuki said. "I'll be strong and brave like Otou-san."

"Me too." Reiha said. "I want to be strong like Okaa-san and Otou-san too."

"Don't forget me." Shippo said.

All of the parents filled with pride as their children vowed to grow strong and brave. They couldn't have better kids. They actually understood about the jewel. They didn't go into detail about it but they knew the basics. It would make it that much easier to protect them.
