Chapter 12
Hope
"They can't be gone they were just here." Kagome said. She slowly sank to the ground.
"I'm going to go look for them Kagome." Inuyasha said as he rubbed her back. "It was probably one of Shippo's stupid tricks. Stay here in case they show up." He leapt into the woods.
"Don't worry Kagome. Inuyasha's probably right." Sango said. "Let's go wait inside." Sango helped her up. Kagome didn't do anything after moving into the house. She just stared straight ahead not doing anything.
"I'll go see if they are at Kaede-sama's hut." Miroku said. No one really thought they were still there. They were all sure the shadow took them. Who and why would anyone do that?
It was nighttime by the time Inuyasha came back. Kagome hadn't moved. She still had the blank look in her eyes. "I couldn't find them." Inuyasha told Sango and Miroku.
"They weren't near the village either." Miroku said.
"What do we tell Kagome?" Sango asked. "She hasn't moved once since I brought her in there."
Crying could be heard from inside the hut. Everyone rushed in. Reiha sat next to Kagome while tears ran down her face. She knew they were gone. Shippo wasn't playing one of his tricks. He would never worry her like that.
"Kagome." Inuyasha said. He walked over to her and rubbed her back. After a while she collapsed in his arms and cried harder. Inuyasha couldn't do anything about it. "I'm taking her to our house for a while."
Inuyasha picked her up and headed out the door. "We'll come over soon." Miroku said.
"That's so horrible. I can't believe someone would do that." Sango said after they left.
"Ah, but think about it. Someone's been after Kagome's life for a while now. They've hired youkai to kill her and even gave them more strength. Since it failed I think they took her children." Miroku said.
"What are you getting at Miroku?" Sango asked. It made sense but why did he bring it up?
"Well I believe the person who took Inuki and Shippo is the same person who wants Kagome dead. I think they will make some kind of contact soon." Miroku said.
"Do you think we should tell Inuyasha?" Sango asked.
"Later. He needs to comfort Kagome right now." Miroku said. "Reiha do you want to play a game?"
"Hai." She said. Of course she had no idea what was going on. It was best not to tell her anyway. For all she knew Inuki and Shippo were at their house playing or something. What would they tell her if she asked where they were?

Inuyasha was laying on the futon with Kagome on top of him. Her face was buried in his neck and she was still crying. He rubbed her back and told her it would be all right. "I promise we'll find them." He said.
After a while she grew exhausted and fell asleep. It was probably better that she was asleep. He'd rather that then her crying. He couldn't stand it when she cried. He couldn't help but blame himself.
If only he'd been watching them more closely or been paying attention to his surroundings better. He stayed alert all the time. The one time he let his guard down for a second.
He heard Miroku and Sango coming. He scooted Kagome over to the side of him. He pulled the blanket up to her neck and ran his hand over her cheek before going to meet them.
"Inuyasha we think the kidnapper will come and make contact." Miroku said. `Better to be blunt than to piss him off with useless information, especially when he's like this.' Miroku thought.
"How do you figure that?" Inuyasha asked. Miroku told him what he'd been talking to Sango about. Inuyasha thought about it for a while and realized that it all made sense. If they couldn't kill her then they might as well torture her for a while right?
"How's Kagome?" Sango asked.
"She's asleep now." Inuyasha said.
"Did she cry the whole time?" Sango asked.
"Hai." Inuyasha said. His head was down and his bangs covered his eyes.
"You can't blame yourself for this Inuyasha." Miroku said. He knew by his body language he was blaming himself.
"It's my fault. I should've been watching them more closely." Inuyasha said. "I finally find happiness and someone tries to take it away from me."
"It's not your fault." Kagome said.
Everyone looked at her. "You should go back to sleep." Inuyasha said. He walked up to her. Her eyes were red and puffy.
"I'm fine. I can't sleep knowing that they're gone." Kagome said. "Where's Reiha?"
"She's with Kaede." Sango said.
"Kagome did you happen to hear everything we just said?" Miroku asked.
"Hai." Kagome said. Why didn't Inuyasha notice her earlier? Because he was feeling so guilty he hadn't realized she was there. He didn't want her to know about anything just yet.
"All we can do now is wait for the kidnapper to make contact with you." Miroku said.
"I'm going back into our room." She walked away.
"We should leave you two alone. I'm sure Kagome needs your comforting right now." Miroku said. "We'll come by as soon as we hear some news." Him and Sango left to pick up Reiha.
Inuyasha walked into their room and sat next to Kagome. She was lying on the bed facing away from him. "We'll get them back right?" Kagome asked quietly.
"Of course we will." Inuyasha said. He laid down and spooned her back. He wrapped his arms around her waist and buried his face in the back of her neck. Kagome put her hands on his. They both fell asleep tired from the stress that day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day Kagome and Inuyasha woke up from yelling. Sango had made them both breakfast. "You guys look terrible." Sango said.
"Thanks Sango." Inuyasha said sarcastically.
"Gomen." Sango said. "Eat up you'll need your strength in case something happens."
Kagome didn't eat her food. She moved the food around on her plate but never put it in her mouth. Inuyasha noticed and practically begged her to eat. "I'm not hungry." Kagome said.
Inuyasha had spent an hour trying to get her to eat. Nothing was working. He didn't want her to be like this. He finally gave up. He'd even tried to force her to eat. Sango and Miroku looked at her worried.
They knew Inuyasha wasn't any better. He was just trying to act ok for Kagome's sake. If she saw him break down then she would stop believing they would get Inuki and Shippo back.
Miroku and Sango had tried to keep Reiha out of sight. Whenever they saw her Inuyasha would just look guilty and Kagome would cry again. Kagome hadn't seen her since the last time she'd broken down and cried. Reiha had asked her where Inuki and Shippo were and she couldn't hold in her tears anymore.
They were all now eating lunch. Well everyone but Kagome. She still wouldn't eat. She was getting worse and it had only been a day. She told everyone it was because of the youkai that had attacked them earlier.
The youkai would only say the word `jewel' over and over again. Inuyasha took care of him with one swipe of his claws. No one could tell where that one had come from. The youkai was a mindless forest animal. Other youkai used it to do it's bidding because they were stupid and no one would care if it died.
Later that evening Inuyasha stood up. He heard a whirring sound. It sounded like an arrow. It was heading straight for Kagome. She was sitting outside looking in the forest. Inuyasha jumped in front of it and blocked it with his robe.
"What?" Kagome asked. She hadn't noticed anything until he stepped in front of her.
"What do you mean `what'? Didn't you see the arrow headed straight for you?" Inuyasha asked.
"What arrow?" Kagome asked. Inuyasha handed her the arrow. She held it in her hand. She felt the arrow pulse and she saw an image of Inuki and Shippo in a dark place. They both looked fine.
"What?" Inuyasha yelled. He heard her gasp.
"I saw Inuki and Shippo in a dark place. I think it was a room. They were fine." Kagome said.
"How did you see that?" Inuyasha asked.
"The arrow pulsed and I just saw it." Kagome said. "I can't explain any better than that."
Inuyasha bent down and looked at the arrow in her hands. He picked it up and sniffed it. There was nothing but the scent of wood on it. Suddenly he heard another arrow. He couldn't block it in time.
The arrow whizzed past Kagome's head and hit the side of her house. If she had moved at all the arrow would have hit her. She just sat there with wide eyes. "Kagome." Inuyasha said waving a hand in front of her face.
"I'm fine." She said as the shock wore off. She looked at the arrow that had hit her house. Something was on it.
She pulled the arrow out of the wall. Two pieces of cloth were on the arrow. Someone had deliberately shot put the cloth on the arrow before shooting it. She looked at the cloth more closely. One was a piece of fire rat fur and another a light blue cloth with a little leaf on it. It looked like it was from Inuki and Shippo's clothes.
"Inuyasha I think this is part of Inuki and Shippo's clothes." Kagome said. She handed him the cloths.
Inuyasha smelt it. "It is theirs." Inuyasha said. It smelled like them.
"You don't think they hurt them do you?" Kagome said as new tears made their way down her cheeks.
"No, you wouldn't have had that vision if you did." Inuyasha said. "I only smelt them and no blood."
Inuyasha held Kagome as she cried again. This time she cried because she was so happy that they were ok. She leaned into Inuyasha and held the cloths tightly.
Such a sad chapter. I left you hanging again. I didn't write who took Inuki and Shippo. Oh well maybe in the next chapter. That also means that the fic is coming to an end. So sad. I hope you like this chapter. Ja ne.
