:::A/N:::I would also like to note that there will be no Naraku or any other of his `children' in this story. I couldn't find anywhere to fit them in, so let's just say that he was defeated not too long after Shinta's birth, Okay? Okay. Another thing, I'm not planning on ending this real soon. Perhaps I'll go over 20 chapters! Also, I would like to note that Hakkaku is now very mature, since it has been 500 years. So he's REALLY mature. And an alchemist. Just wanted to point that out.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters from Inuyasha or any other works from Takahashi-sensei. Though I wish I owned Kouga. Has anybody else noticed how finely toned his body is? Damn! If only I could find a guy like that. ((sighs))

Chapter eight

A fallen foe and his rival

“Shinta? What's wrong?” Kouga asked his daughter, concern in his voice. Shinta shook herself out of her reverie, looking at her father with tears in her eyes.

“Papa… Mama's coming back, right?” She asked, hugging him. Kouga nodded. Souta walked into the room, a sullen expression on his features. He sat down next to the two, with tear-filled eyes, a crumpled piece of paper in his fist. Kouga waited for the young boy to say something, even utter a single word, but nothing.

“Souta… What's the matter?” Souta looked up at him. He opened his mouth to say something, but instead, his voice choked, and he held out the note, his eyes flowing with sad tears. Kouga read the note carefully.

My dearest Kouga,

I am sorry to say that your mate is now in my care, along with her mother and two of your former pack mates. They are eagerly awaiting your arrival, along with a very precious Nikon No Tama… Don't hesitate to bring your child or your mate's brother. They are gravely important. That is, if you wish to see these four again. And don't worry. A dear old friend will be waiting for you at the dock near the lake. You'll see your mate soon if you follow my instructions from there.

If you come soon enough, you might even hear the wonderful story of how the Nikon No Tama came to be. And I don't have a doubt that you'll find it interesting…

Kouga crumpled the paper in his fist, his knuckles turning chalk-white. He growled, slamming his fist into the ground, shocking the children. Shinta clung to Souta, somewhat scared of her father at the moment. “P-Papa? You're scaring me…” she whimpered. Kouga's face softened, and he picked up the girl, hugging her tightly. He set her down again, giving Souta a stern look.

“You keep an eye on her, Souta. If anything happens to either of you… I couldn't bear it. I will show you the way to our friend Hakkaku's house. There you will be safe for the time being. Keep Shinta safe. Don't let me down.” Kouga went upstairs, grabbing his old armor. He had kept it, considering how it had faired so well these past few hundred years. He came back downstairs, clad in his old armor and furs, the kind he wore in the Sengoku Jidai. “I'm going to find out where Ginta, Kyoko, and your mother are,” he said to Shinta, “And where your mother is as well,” he exclaimed to Souta. He picked up his old katana, and all three headed out into the cold night, going their separate ways after Kouga pointed them in the direction of Hakkaku's house.

“Souta… I'm scared…” Shinta exclaimed, walking down the streets with her new friend. Souta nodded. They had been traveling the dark, abandoned streets for awhile. Indeed, it was scary. While Shinta was in the other room, Kouga had told Souta that many people were after them. He never had found out why, but Kouga had said it had to do with a prophesy. He sighed. Why did he always have to be left in the dark? He was almost nine, now! Sure, he was young, but he was very mature. “Souta?” More so than Kagome was at times! Or even Inuyasha!

Where had Inuyasha gone, anyways? “Souta?!” Kagome had been reluctant to say anything, and Kouga never mentioned him. Even his own mother had only smiled and walked away, but it was always a sad smile. Had something happened to Inuyasha? Maybe, but—

“Souta!” Shinta yelled, clinging to the boy in fear. Souta looked around. They were surrounded by what looked like demons. They had varying shades of red for hair, red yukatas, and each held a black sword with a red tip. Souta shrunk back, protecting Shinta.

“Well, well, well… What do we have here?” one of them asked mockingly. Souta glared at him.

“None of your business. Who are you? What do you want?” The man smirked.

“Cocky one aren't we? We're here to take the girl. Now, move out of the way, or we'll be forced to kill you.”

“You never told me who you were,” Souta glowered, thinking of a way to escape. He found none.

“We're the Legendary Fire Demons, rumored to have been dead and gone. But we've just been waiting.”

“All this time? For what?” Souta asked. The man smirked, his red eyes glittering.

“Her.”

Kouga had been running for a long time. He dashed passed a row of houses, turning a sharp corner, heading towards the docks. It was cold out, and he could see his hot breath in front of him. He paused in front of a fork in the streets, trying to remember the way to the docks. A long time ago, Kagome had brought him here, and took him on a boat ride. That was before all the houses were built, though, and it was hard to get there without getting lost. He sniffed the air, smelling salt water. `Left!' he thought before dashing down the row of houses, entering a small fog. He slowed down, getting closer, and his nose twitched.

`Clay and ashes?' he thought, sensing a figure further in the fog. He stopped, gasping at the person in front of him, clad in a red haori.

“Inu… yasha?”

“In the flesh. Long time no see, wolf.”

“No!” Souta yelled, shielding Shinta from the attacks. He had many burns, and his vision was getting foggy. “Shinta! Get out of here!”

“No! I can't leave you! I won't lose you!” She yelled, her breathing getting becoming shallower and speeding up. Her eyes turned white, watching her new best friend fall to the ground.

“Shinta… Run…” Soutta gasped, “I don't want them to get you…” One of the men in red threw an attack at his side, leaving a large gash from the black sword. Souta howled. `He… howled…?' Shinta thought before a sudden bright light emanated from the young girl. Souta stared at her, watching Shinta as she howled into the night, the light around her turning red, and the demons around them dissolved into dust before he passed out from pain. Shinta and Souta now sat in the middle of a small crater, Shinta smiled slightly, letting herself fall on top of the young boy. `I… saved him… my friend… Souta… My… first… real… friend.'

Souta woke up groggily, and then remembered the events of last night. He sat up quickly, forgetting his injuries, before falling back and wincing in pain. He opened his eyes slightly, noticing a man with a Mohawk walk in, carrying a damp cloth and other cleaning supplies. “Who are… you?” Souta asked, trying to sit up again. The man gently pushed him back onto the bed, laying the cloth on his forehead.

“I am Hakkaku. I used to be one of Kouga's pack mates. We no longer could keep our pack together once the humans built all these structures. That is why I live in this cabin. It reminds me of my home in the Feudal era, with all the land around us.” Souta quirked a brow, watching the strange man walk to a nearby shelf, inspecting the vials resting upon it. He found what he was looking for, and handed Souta the small vial. “Drink this. It will help you heal faster,” he said before heading back to grab another. Souta looked into the contents of the vial, wondering if it was poison. He decided it wasn't, and drank the whole vial in one gulp. He sighed, feeling warmth spread through his body.

“Here,” Hakkaku said, giving Souta the second vial, “Take this, but don't drink it yet.”

“Okay… Where's Shinta?”

“She is sleeping in the next room. She is safe… for now.” Souta tensed, turning towards the wolf.

“What do you mean, for now? And what did those demons want with her?” Souta asked, anger churning within his body. For some strange reason, he felt like he was connected to the young she-wolf; like he had known her for thousands of years.

“Souta-san, you need to keep Shinta away from Remus. He wants her, so he can use the Nikon No Tama. Do you know what the jewel is?” he asked. Souta shook his head. “It is a jewel, much like the one that your sister had shattered, the one that she searched for while she was gone in the Feudal era. It is much powerful than the first jewel, though, for it is powered by a very powerful force.” Souta scratched his head in confusion.

“What's it powered by?” he asked. Hakkaku smiled warmly.

“It's powered by the love of two people. I do not know the story, but I do know that the prophesy told by the two lover's is coming true.”

“When?” Souta asked, “What's going to happen?” Hakkaku face fell slightly, reluctant to tell the boy.

“You shall find out soon. When the two realize who they are, the prophesy will be fulfilled.”

Niki: So, how'd you all like it?

Inuyasha: YEAH, BABY! I'M BACK!!!

Kouga: Oh, great. Will I have to fight him again?

Niki: I don't know… will you? ((Laughs))

Kouga: Neko-chan, you're mean… ((Pouts))

Niki: Are you pouting…? Ha! It's not my fault; the author can't tell what's happening. Randomness of the day: (::0::) A band aid!

Kagome: Jeez, Neko-chan, you're weird. Oh well, your story is so cool!

Niki: No it's not.

Inuyasha: You're right. It sucks ass.

Kouga: You're the only one around here who does that, mutt face. ((smirks))

Inuyasha: YOU'RE DEAD!!!!

Sango: Hiraikotsu! ((BOP))

Niki: Look! Is Inuyasha dead? ((Pokes fallen Inu with a stick)) … ((Miroku joins in))

Kouga: I wish.

Niki: Oh well… As Inuyasha recovers, I shall write another chapter! (Sorry this one was so short. The next one will hopefully be longer and full of… plotness? Yeah, that works.) I hope you guys liked this one. I'm trying to make more of a plot out of this story. T.T I had a lot of writer's block lately.

Also, for any Furuba fans that might be reading this, I might be uploading a new Furuba fic soon! It'll be funny and witty and good. (Aren't all my fics? Haha, JK! XP) Okies, gotta go. Ja ne! R&R, but no flames, please! They burn my computer so I can't type!
