Dangerous Case

Chapter 5

Falling

<They walked into Kagome's house which was fairly old fashioned. The rooms were separated by screen doors that were all shut. They walked through the main hallway to the upstairs which the rooms here were separated by doors. “This is my room.” Kagome opened the door and almost fell to her knees when she saw what...not what...who was in there.

“Hello Kagome.”

There he was, Naraku was sitting in her desk chair with the very picture they'd been looking for in his hands.>

Before Kagome could even fall to the ground she was caught by a purple miasma cloud and was beside Naraku in his arms. She tried to pull away but it was useless. “Let her go!” Inuyasha growled.

“Ah Inuyasha, best detective in Tokyo.” Naraku said.

“What of it?” Inuyasha said. “Give Kagome back to me.”

“That's not particularly in my plans.” Naraku threw the picture in the air and it was surrounded by miasma but what fell to the ground were its ashes. “I believe you came here for this.”

“What is it you want with Kagome?” Miroku asked.

“Many things I suppose, the other half of the jewel for one, her power, and maybe some female companionship.” Naraku lifted up her skirt slightly and Kagome tried to kick him. “Ah, I don't think you're in the position to hurt anyone.”

“Put her down.” Inuyasha narrowed his eyes at her.

Naraku looked at him before grabbing Kagome bridal style and jumped out of the window. He was high in the air on top of a miasma cloud with her. “Shall we have some fun?” He smiled dropping Kagome along with something no one could make out.

Inuyasha jumped out of the window to catch her but whatever Naraku dropped turned into a full sized man that was wearing a baboon belt and began attacking him violently. “Miroku!” He shouted keeping Kagome in the corner of his eye.

Kagome screamed as she started falling. “As I've said I'll be back for your answer Kagome, if you survive the fall that is.” She could hear his laughter even as she fell. Instead of hitting the ground in the most painful way, she landed somewhat softly.

“No one can ever seem to do anything right can they?” Kagome had fallen into the arms of Sesshomaru.

The figure that Inuyasha and Miroku were fighting disappeared leaving a wooden doll behind which Miroku picked up. Inuyasha ran over to Kagome immediately and took her out of Sesshomaru's arms. “Are you alright?” He asked.

“I'm fine.” Kagome said. “Thank you for saving me.”

“If I hadn't have caught you Inuyasha would have. I did arrive at an opportune time it seems.” Sesshomaru said. “That was Naraku?”

“That fucking bastard was here waiting for us.” Inuyasha said.

“That's why this place was off limits. Although I can't help but think I've seen him somewhere.” Sesshomaru said. “Actually, I think I do, I'll have to look it up to confirm but I'll let you know.”

Without another word Sesshomaru left the group. “Well I thought he would've had more to say.” Miroku said. “He drove all the way over here.”

“You can put me down now Inuyasha.” Kagome finally said realizing she was still sitting bridal style in his arms. He set her gently on her feet. “Thanks.”

“Well this is the only clue of Naraku.” Miroku held up the wooden doll. It was made out of common tree wood and was tied together by strings. It had a circle head, very generic shapes for the feet and arms with a piece of hair tied around the neck. “I think this might be his hair though I'll get it through the lab. Are you guys alright to go back together?”

“Yea the faster that gets to the lab the better, I'll send Kagome's clothes along as well.” Inuyasha said.

“Oh?” Miroku raised an eyebrow. “Getting frisky with whom you protect eh?”

“Miroku, if you don't leave within the next two seco-”

“I'm already gone.” Miroku said before he could finish his sentence.

“Do you sleep with who you protect often?” Kagome asked as she began walking back to the car.

“No, he's lying and you're the first. He's just a lecher.” Inuyasha explained as he followed behind her. “Are you sure you're alright?”

“I'm fine, just a little shaky.” Kagome had a hand on her chest. “It's not the first time I've seen my life flash before my eyes.”

“That's not a good thing to get used to.” Inuyasha opened the car door for her.

“Can we just go somewhere for now?” Kagome asked.

“Where?”

“Anywhere just to forget what happened.” She replied.

“Alright let's go for a walk then.” Inuyasha started the car and for the first time in his life he drove sanely for Kagome's sake.

“I don't think this was necessary.” Kagome said as she handed him a bag that had her clothing in it.

“It is.” Inuyasha said. “Anything that could have physical evidence of Naraku is going to help out. We need it to convict him of the things he's done.”

“Do you have to stand outside the dressing room while I get dressed?” Kagome asked behind the curtain putting on new clothes they were about to buy.

“If it wasn't for my authority you'd be changing outside with everyone watching, be glad you got this much privacy.” Inuyasha said. “I said I wasn't going to let you out of my sight and especially after today.”

“Alright.” Kagome rolled her eyes. She stepped out of the changing room with a green three quarter sleeve shirt and a pair of blue jean capris.

They walked to the front desk register and Inuyasha handed the woman the tags. “Thanks for your cooperation.” She rang up the items and Inuyasha paid with a credit card.

“Do you get funds for that stuff from work?” Kagome asked.

“No, that was my money.” He said.

“What? I could've paid for this you know. I am wearing them.” Kagome said. “At least let me pay you back.”

“I'm the one that made you buy new clothes.”

“But, I'm the one that wanted to go out and not straight home to change into the clothes I already had.” Kagome argued back.

“Look the clothes are paid for so let's leave it at that.” Inuyasha said.

“Alright, but at least let me do something.”

“Drop it already.”

Kagome didn't say anything but she couldn't help but think that they were on a date. Inuyasha had just bought her new clothes they were walking together alone. They hadn't known each other for very long but she noticed that he had a very gruff, rude, defensive personality but towards he was kind, and gentle. She thought maybe it was just his way towards women but she saw his reaction towards women too and he was the same gruff way. Without even thinking she'd woven her fingers between his as they walked.

“This is not how I want to spend the rest of the day and I don't think Kagome enjoys it either.” Inuyasha stomped the width of Sesshomaru's office.

“It's urgent and Kagome is safe outside the door. Will you sit down?” Sesshomaru said starting to get irritated. “I said earlier I believe I've seen Naraku before and well I have.”

“Where?” Inuyasha asked taking a seat.

“About ten years ago when we were busy I took on a case. It was some deluded human that spent his entire life collecting relics that supposedly held some type of power. He believed with each relic he would become stronger but in order to use that power he needed to sacrifice himself in fire. Well needless to say he failed and ended up as a horrible burn victim.” Sesshomaru threw Inuyasha the case file to look at the pictures. It was a man covered in bandages with only one eye uncovered. There were a couple of other photos of the burned house and ashes of the relics.

“A couple weeks after being in the hospital he started going back into madness he would scream for hours asking for the power of youkai and he finally succeeded. He made a deal to trade his human body and soul for one of the youkai. I walked in to see his transformation. He jumped off the windowsill of the third floor and left bloody bandages on the bed. The face that I saw today was his. Onigumo was his human name.” Sesshomaru finished explaining.

“He's only a hanyou? How did he get so powerful? He radiates full youkai and smells like one.” Inuyasha closed the case file.

“That's what's odd, without knowing the full details of the pact I can't say what his abilities are but he is a hanyou regardless.” Sesshomaru put the case file away. “It's an unsolved case and he was known for a couple murders for a few of the relics he'd stolen.”

“So that bastard has more under his belt, which is all the more reason to catch that bastard soon.” Inuyasha closed his hand into a fist.

“That girl's safety comes first since she's our only witness.” Sesshomaru said.

“I know that.”

“Don't get too involved, when you do your judgment can be affected and I expect you to complete whatever work you have.”

“I'm not getting involved.”

“I think we can all see it clearly that you are, I'm just asking for you to think things over and be rational. You are a detective after all.” Sesshomaru said. Without giving him a chance to speak he dismissed him.

Inuyasha walked out of Sesshomaru's office where Kagome was uncomfortably gaining attention. Miroku walked over to Inuyasha and chuckled. “What the fuck are they fawning over?” Inuyasha growled.

“Well it's been a while since they've seen a woman who wasn't…well how should I say this? Wasn't a prostitute come into the office. They haven't seen a woman as attractive as Kagome in a while and she's not being arrested.” Miroku laughed.

Inuyasha grumbled and walked over to her. As soon as he touched her shoulder the guys dispersed quickly and went back to their work, occasionally looking over their shoulder to make sure Inuyasha wasn't going to kill them.

“Let's go Kagome.” Inuyasha wrapped an arm around her as they walked out but before he shut the door he gave the guys one last glare.

“What was that all about?” Kagome asked.

“They were just being stupid?”

“Huh? I meant with Sesshomaru. Who's being stupid?”

“It's nothing, let's just go.” Inuyasha stopped by his office and grabbed the bag of clothes that Kagome had been wearing earlier and threw them at Miroku. “Process these, its what she was wearing today.”

“Oh, did you strip her after the incident?” Miroku asked. “I'm not going to find anything dirty?”

“Just process the damn clothes!” Inuyasha shouted. He was starting to feel less like a detective every day. He did walk out of the building with a smile when he heard the whispers. They were all saying how lucky he was to have Kagome around all the time now.

“Why are you smiling?” Kagome asked.

“It's nothing.” Inuyasha grabbed her hand.

“You're never going to tell me anything are you?”

“There are some things you never want to know.”
