a/n: this does have romance in it it's just taking me a long time to get there. but don't you worry i'd die if there was no romance and lovey dovey stuff.
disclaimer: i don't own inuyasha cause Rumiko Takahashi does, i also don't own the book 'daughter of the forest' cause Julliet Marillier does. So i don't claim the storyline or the characters.
Chapter thirteen: My soul.
Kagome didn't hear when the doors of her room were opened and she didn't care. She was crying like a baby in the corner of her new room where her new husband had left her half naked, afraid and strangly weak.
When Kagome heard footsteps from behind her she thought he was back to toture her more, or maybe even kill her. She didn't care, let him at least then she would be free of him.
When a blanket was placed over her shoulders she turned.
"you would not kill you" came a empty voice.
Kagome looked into the eyes of the pale girl, Kanna. She had drapped the blanket over her with one hand and clutched the mirror with the other. "And if you really want to die..."
Kanna handed Kagome a small dagger with an incredibly sharp blade. She stared at it for a moment contemplating what she could do with it. She could stab Naraku, no he was to powerful for her, she could stab herself...
'Would it be so bad to die?' She thought for a moment her hands shaking, then she dropped the dagger, she didn't notice as if slid under the bed and started to cry.
If Kanna had emotions she would have been relieved and happy, she thought for a moment Kagome was going to kill herself, that all her chances of reuniting herself would be lost. But now she was sure this girl, Kagome, was her only hope and that she was strong in both body and mind and that if Kanna wanted to live, to have her life back she needed to help her.
"Good" She whispered in Kagomes ear.
Kagome stopped crying, it had been a test of her strength and she had past maybe...
Kanna looked around the room making sure there was definatly no one listening "You mustn't let him get to you. You are very strong"
The pale girl took Kagome's hands in her own, they were cold and lifeless "I will help you escape. Soon... I'm not sure when but when i tell you, i want you to run into your forest and hide. I will hold him off. But you must wait for my signal"
Kanna got up mirror in hand and turned to the door.
"Why?" Kagome asked "Why would you help me?"
"Because my soul needs you. Your help, if i am to be whole again"
Kagome frowned in confusion but before she could say anything Kanna had slipped through the door and was gone.

Naraku laughed it was starting out to be a glorious day. He had a brand new wife and she tasted good. Her scent of fear still lingered on him and if not for important matters he would have been at her side. But there was something different about this girl, her power, she didn't have the same spark in her eyes. That only made him more curious.
He returned back to the conversation, his general was talking about the up comming battle and how he had set everything up and they were almost ready.
Naraku was thrilled not only would he have this girl, but he would take her kingdom and her forest and then finally he would have her again, the bitch who ran away from hims so long ago...

Although Kagome was still frightened she decided she wouldn't spend her time cooped up in that horrid room, waiting for him to return and try that again.
She walked down the cold dark halls, she realised now they seemed to be filled with a great saddness and despair.
The walls seemed to echo 'follow me' the voice was so familiar like the one she had heard calling her from the forest so many times. She followed it not knowing why but she had to hear it's story.
The voices led to ahuge room with a large bed with red sheets and a wardrobe filled with beautiful dresses and jewels. Then Kagome noticed on the wall above the bed there was something, a portrait covered in dust.
Climbing onto the soft bed she wiped the dust away.
A face was revealed, a womans. When all the dust was cleared Kagome gasped and stared at the picture.
Kagome realised it was Midoriko, maybe a long time ago, she just looked so strange because her eyes reflected saddness but not the same loss and pain and terror that the Midoriko she knew had. She still seemed... Whole
"She has such sad eyes." Said a voice from behind.
Kagome whirled around it was the same old woman from before (a/n: i had to bring her back, damn, but she still isn't that special) she had a faraway look in her eyes, as if she was in a different time and place.
"She used to live here, in this very room, she was Naraku's first wife. At first she was happy but they say something terrible happened. Then one day it got so bad she ran away into the forest, they say it grew to protect her from him. She hid in the forest and he searched but he couldn't find her."
The woman looked at Kagome and took her face in her hand "It's no wonder my lord took a liking to you, you look just like her"
Kagome couldn't believe it. The stories were true, Midoriko had been married off, to none other than Naraku. Even his own people were certain he was a demon because only a demon can live that long, or a spirit. no wonder Midoriko couldn't help her, she was afraid of him.
A/n: i'm so close to the good bits (i think you can guess what they are. romantic not dirty). there is still more to the story though.
