Disclaimer: i don't own inuyasha cause Rumiko Takahashi does, i also don't own the book 'daughter of the forest' cause Julliet Marillier does. So i don't claim the storyline or the characters.

Chapter twenty seven- The last fight

It was only after the fight had begun did Kagome realise that they didn't have weapons to defeat Naraku who had both Miasma and Tentacles. It was a hasle to cover her face and defend against the tentacles that tried to wrap around her body. A few times she had only just narrowly escaped its clutches.

Midoriko was doing a lot better for she had power over nature and the trees and plants were her protection. But both of them were mostly defending and hardly even tickling Naraku. He was enjoying watching the two mikos weaken and falter. Kagura and Kanna didn't intervene.

Kagome wished biterly that she had a weapon such as the tetsaiga to cut Naraku into little peices.

She didn't know that help was on the way, comming as fast as possible... But would Inuyasha be fast enough?

Midoriko used all of her anger and built up fear to fight. She used roots of the trees to wrap around Naraku's tentacles but that was about all she could do. She hadn't properly planned the fight and now she regreted that.

Kagome was too busy thinking to notice the tentacle that slithered towards her feet. Naraku saw a way to win and he was going to take it. The large tentacle wrapped around Kagome's anckles and with fear and horror she tried to wriggle free. Of course Naraku was not going to let her go.

Midoriko tried vainly to get her free but there was nothing she could do, she was a ghost who had given up her physical body.

Naraku laughed in victory as he dragged the struggling Kagome. She looked like a fish caught by a hook.

"I'm so tired of this game of cat and mouse" Naraku said with a fake yawn "I don't need you anymore, for i have her" he pointed towards Midoriko who was still fighting.

"I'm just going to take your soul and then be done with you!" He exclaimed.

He pulled her closer and made to kiss her. Midoriko knew that if she kissed him he would take her soul like he took part of her own. But she could do nothing to stop him she was like a flea trying to kill a dinosaur.

Kagome was both filled with terror and confusion. Was he trying to kill her or kiss her? She was afraid it might be both.

"Don't you dare!" Growled a familiar voice.

There was a red flash and a sword cut through the tentacle holding Kagome. With a surprised yelp she fell to the floor and scrambled away from Naraku.

Then a demon in red, with long silver hair and doggy ears stood between them and the tetsaiga pointed towards the demon.

"I should have known it was you who frightened Kagome" Inuyahsa began to circle Naraku "I should have known it was you she hid from was and was terrified of! I don't care if she hates me, she is my mate and I will protect her!"

He rushed towards Naraku and the fight began. They were moving so fast and Kagome felt sick and dizy so she could hardly tell which was Naraku and which was Inuyasha. She prayed that Inuyasha would win.

A tentacle peirced Inuyasha's arm and he screamed with agony. Blood spilled on the ground and Inuyasha clutched the wond with his free hand. This fight was tiring him. Sweat dripped from his forheard and he was gasping for breath but still the fight had to go on, for Kagome.

She saw him falter and clentched her fists in worry she wanted to help him but could not because she would only get in the way. all she could do was hope and pray that all would be well.

'I love you Inuyasha, you cannot die on me'

Somehow it seemed for a moment Inuyasha heard her pray as he stopped and his ears twitched. Then it was as if all his wounds were gone and he was a new fighter. Naraku was the one who began to falter, he was weakening and no one would pray for him, no one would hope for him to win.

Desperatly Naraku stabbed with a tentacle which Inuyasha easily dodged and then sliced clean off. Naraku recoiled and cried in pain when he tried the move again this time with many tentacles at once. Again Inuyasha ducked beneath them and sliced them off with the tetsaiga.

Naraku was filled with rage for he believed he could not lose! He attacked Inuyasha with miasma, just like Koga had used the arrow and because Kagome could not stand by weakly and because she felt the power inside her she used her mind to protect him.

A barrier of blue light formed around him and without questioning or wondering how Inuyasha thrust forward because Naraku was stunned and had hesistated for a moment.

Inuyasha impaled him on his sword.

Kilala, deep in the castle, opened her eyes for the last time and mewed. Then she disappeared as if she had never been the last thing she ever thought was. 'Now all is well'

Naraku's body fell to the ground, dead. Shocked Kagome's barrier fadded away as she fell to her knees. Midoriko laughed and jumped and sighed with relief "he's gone!" she cried.

Kanna and Kagura stood a small distance away. Neither of them seemed disappointed Kagura even gave the dead body a final kick in the ribs and she spat in his face. She regreted not being the one to kill him but she wasn't going to be sad that he was dead.

Kanna seemed sad though she looked at her mirror and then at the rest of them. Midoriko looked back at her, Kanna said in a small voice "Why are we not joined back sister? What still holds kagura and I?"

Inuyasha had no idea what they were talking about but Kagome seemed to. There had always been something about that mirror, the mirror Naraku made Kanna hold and never let go of. Kagome gently took it from the girl who for a moment didn't want to give it up.

Kagome looked at her reflection and then she pointed it towards Kagura and Kanna instead of there reflection there were two shards of Midorkio's soul.

"There here!" Kagome laughed "They were always in this mirror"

Then without delicacy Kagome raised the mirror above her head. Kanna closed her eyes with a smile on her face.

When the mirror smashed there seemed to be glass everywhere and when it settled Kanna and Kagura were both gone, Naraku's castle was gone too. Midoriko held a hand over her heart and she was smiling. Kagome could see that the missing peice that made Midoriko look so sad was now back where it belonged.

"Thank you" She whispered as she too disappeared in a shower of pink flowers.

Kagome knew without actually seeing that the forest was shifting and her family was waking from their long sleep.

She turned around to Inuyasha who was staring at her too.

"Inuyasha! Were free!" She hugged him "I'm free of Naraku!" And then she sobbered up and remembered the spell he was under "And you are free of the spell"

"Spell?" He asked puzzled.

"The one that made you protect me" Kagome felt ashamed, he should never have been put under a spell!

Inuyasha's reply were fits of laughter "Spell? I wasn't under a spell!" Then he took her hand and looked deep into her eyes "Silly girl, the only spell I was under was love and I'm still under it!"

He hugged her because he felt so much joy that she was safe, free of the fear that made it hard to reach out to her.

"You love me?" Kagome whispered and then realising what it meant she wrapped her arms around him and said "I love you too Inuyasha!"

She wasn't sure who reached out first but they kissed as though they had been parted for so long. He tried to pull her as close as he could possibly to feel her body against his own. To know that her love was true and that she were real.

When they finally broke apart for air he ran a claw over the mark on her neck. "My beautiful Kagome. I knew you were the one to be my mate the first day i saw you in the forest. When you said... That you never... Never wanted to see me again I felt like my heart had been ripped to peices"

"I'm so sorry, i never meant it" She whispered. "I always loved you"

"And i will always love you because demons mate for life" He replied

All was well from that day on, Kagome and Inuyasha were together until the day they dies, and had many children.

Leon stopped the war when he found out that Inuyasha had saved his daughters and their lives. He even excepted him into his home and gladly let his daughter be with him.

They rarely spoke of the mistakes he made when he married Kagura and gave Kagome to Naraku for those were things Kagome would rather forget.

The ghost woman Midoriko had her soul in one peice again and she was finally able to rest.

Deep within the forest, watching with to big red eyes was Kilala, for she was the guardian of miko's and would always be around in spirit to watch over Kagome and her descendants.
