InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Demon Song ❯ Complications ( Chapter 4 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Previously in chapter 3:

The one person besides the Inu Yasha and Maeka who was happy was Kikyo…well, sort of. Inu Yasha had finally gotten over her and gotten himself a proper girlfriend. And yet she realized that Maeka wasn't the one for Inu Yasha, it just didn't feel right. Kikyo had tried to find out more about Maeka, but without a last name or even a place of birth it was almost impossible. Maeka didn't seem harmful, she was charming and sweet. A little too sweet. Kikyo decided that she would feel much happier when they got to Kimara.

Chapter 4: Complications

Maeka trudged slowly up the hill to a small shack. It was old and decrepit with holes in the roof and the chinking falling out between logs. It held the only thing that Maeka was scared of: Jin.

She cautiously knocked on the door.

"Master Jin?" she called hesitantly. Her voice faltered. Something was moving in the shadows of the house. Her stomach somersaulted. Jin's form grew from the shadows almost as if he was shadow. His voice was dry and crusted with age but Jin could not fool Maeka.

"You called me?" asked Maeka fingering the jewel at her throat. Jin had given the jewel to her. He had told her never to take it off. It was his means of communication to her.

"Yes, I have something to tell you. You are an idiot. You have grown to close to these people, especially the half demon. Your job is to find the Demon Song. Not to make friends." He said bluntly, "My advice: Do not let your personal feeling get in the way, and watch the silent priestess." Then he vanished into his shack again. Maeka needed no further dismissal, she ran down the hill and back to camp.

As soon as she was safe at the campsite she pondered what her master had said. The silent priestess? But who could that be? Of course! Kikyo. Maeka looked around the campsite. She could be watching her right now! But Kikyo was over by the stream, placidly washing clothes. She didn't look suspicious at all. That was Maeka's first mistake.

Kikyo laughed to herself. So Maeka was working for the famous Jin! Of course! How could she have failed to notice his signature jewel? Kikyo had silently followed Maeka up the hill to Jin's shack. Maeka had taken no precautionary measure to make sure she and Jin were not overheard. Kikyo had heard their whole conversation. She had a plan forming in the back of her mind as she thought. Maeka won't have the last laugh!

Kagome sat up. It was early, long before she had planned to wake. She had been in the middle of a dream. It was more of a nightmare. In her dream she had been forced to watch as she was cast aside and Inu Yasha and Maeka were married happily ever after while she rotted away in some godforsaken place. She realized her shirt was soaked through. You don't love him anymore; he never loved you, so why love him? She thought, but in her heart she knew it was one big, fat, ugly lie to cover up her true feelings. She knew that she wouldn't be happy until Inu Yasha loved her again and cast the seductive bitch, formerly known as Maeka, aside.

"Kagome, are you alright?" a sleepy voice floated over from across the room. Kikyo. She pondered what to say. Should she tell the truth or should she lie?

"No, I'm not okay." She said, "Kikyo, can we talk?" Kikyo sighed.

"Sure Kagome, what's the matter?" Kikyo wondered what had made Kagome so upset. Inu Yasha probably. Sure enough Kagome replied,

"It's Inu Yasha." When Kikyo made no move to speak Kagome went on a little more confidently, "I can't stand watching her seduce him like this!" Kikyo nodded knowingly,

"Me either, it's just sick. Let me clue you in on a little secret…"

Maeka knew Jin was wrong as she watched Kikyo the next few days. Her eyes never strayed to her and she was never suspicious. She was harmless; Maeka new Jin was just overreacting. Kikyo couldn't suspect Maeka, Jin even said himself, she was a fabulous actor! Jin had also said to not let her feelings get in the way of her work. She knew that he was right. How could she had let herself come to love these people? She loved them like siblings, Sango, Kikyo, Kagome, Sesshomaru, and Miroku….EEEEK!!! Whoa, backtrack a little… maybe not Miroku! She knew most of all that her feeling for Inu Yasha had developed into something she wished it hadn't. If she took the Demon Song from them, she was sure Inu Yasha would hate her so much that he would track her down and kill her with his bare hands. Maeka realized now that she did care what Inu Yasha thought of her, because she… she loved him, as odd as it seems.

Kagome ate her dinner like everyone else but only Sesshomaru and Kikyo noticed how quiet she was. Everyone was too intent to see Miroku being beat up by Inu Yasha and Maeka (Miroku gropes again).

"No really, it's not what you think…AARRGGHH!!!!" Kagome wasn't interested in the fight, in other circumstances she would be out there with Inu Yasha, but she had other, far more important things to worry about… Everyone's eyelids began to droop, even Kikyo's, but two people stayed wide awake. One went unnoticed in the shadows.

Everyone said goodnight and went off to their separate bedrolls, and to Kagome's distress and anger, one pair went off to only one bedroll. (AN p_b & Fuki: Ooooo, BUSTED! A_t: *shakes her head* you guys are so juvenile…) Kagome didn't notice as an unwanted shadow slipped through the trees, following her. She stopped a small ways away from Maeka and Inu Yasha's bedroll. It was now or never….

"No Kagome!" an urgent whisper shot through the air next to her ear and a hand sped out of the dark to grab her arm before she could go any further. She tried to pry free of the person's grasp, but they wouldn't let her go! Whoever it was dug his claws slightly into her arm to get a better grip on her. Wait a second…claws?

"Sesshomaru? What the hell are you thinking?" She snarled.

"Maeka has a protection charm over them, you idiot." Kagome scowled. Sesshomaru loosened the grip on her arm; she turned around and looked straight up into his eyes. That was a mistake. She had never properly looked into his eyes. They were a beautiful shade of Amber. He smiled mysteriously, Kagome blushed, his hand still held her arm. (AN p_b: Lemme get this straight, Sesshomaru smiled? Fuki: GET IT AWAY! GET IT AWAY!!!)

"Stop it Sesshomaru, I love Inu Yasha! Don't do this!" Kagome faltered; did she really love Inu Yasha any more? She could forget all about him and set her mind on a new relationship…

"Let go of me! You're acting like Miroku!" Suddenly Sesshomaru's face started to change. Kagome watched, horrified, as Sesshomaru's face contorted and twisted to form a new one. His new face looked neither young, nor old, but had no resemblance to him in the least bit. He now had dark black/blue hair that was long in the front and short in the back. The robes and fur fell away, revealing the imposters bare chest and sleek leather pants. Something glowed around his neck but Kagome was too distracted to notice it.

"What did you do with Sessh…" The last thing Kagome saw before she passed out was the imposter with an odd smile on his face, his mouth moved and she thought she could make out the words,

"Nighty-night."
