InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Demons in Disguise ❯ Back to the Past ( Chapter 24 )
"Fine, but don't expect me to kill someone if they bust us for trespassing," he grinned. Rin started her hike up the white-wash stairs with Sesshou keeping a close watch. Once they were at the landing Sesshou glanced around at the lovely courtyard and the large tree near the entrance. Suddenly, a sound came from the house. He blinked and lunged for Rin.
"Hide, Rin, someone's coming," he urged. Knowing that Rin wouldn't notice, he grabbed her and hurried behind the tree. Keeping Rin still he glanced around the trunk to see what was happening. He saw a girl, probably somewhere in her twenties, with long, dark hair. She had clear dark brown eyes. On her back was a large, probably quite heavy, yellow back pack. Followed by the girl was a grown woman with short black hair, and an apron.
"Thanks for the great dinner last night, Mom," the girl said. The woman, apparently the girl's mom, smiled.
"No problem, Kagome. It's always nice when you and your dear husband visit from the feudal ages. Besides, from what I hear that farm of yours didn't do to well this year."
"Oh, Mom, you know that farm is just something to occupy our time. I don't eat anything that grows there. We usually just give it to the villagers or Lady Kaede to use in her healing herbs," the girl remarked, now identified as someone named Kagome.
Feudal ages? Sesshou wondered. What are these people talking about?
"It's too bad Sota had to go to rehearsal for his high school play," the mom said. "He wanted to say 'good-bye'."
"It's no trouble, Mom, you know we'll be back soon. Besides we're going to go see Sota's play with you, remember? He' such a great actor! Getting the lead role in his first audition. We wouldn't miss opening night for the world. Right, Inuyasha?" Kagome called into the house.
"Yeah, sure," said a voice from within. The man then walked into view. Sesshou jerked back at his sighting. The man, probably the Inuyasha person, wore baggy red pants, a matching jacket, and a sword sheath tied around his waist (A/N: Basically, Inuyasha's regular outfit). Sesshou's head began to pound as Inuyasha's smell wafted over to his extra-sensitive nose. The man's hair was silvery white, like his own, and his eyes were also golden. Most peculiar of all he had what seemed like dog ears on top of his head.
Dog ears? Hmm, I wonder if those are real, Sesshou thought. The Inuyasha fellow was so familiar that the thought of him was giving Sesshou a migraine. He couldn't explain it, but he felt a sort of resentment to this dog-man he had never met.
"We better be off. Put flowers on Grandpa's grave for me please," Kagome requested.
"Of course," the mom affirmed. With a wave Kagome and her apparent husband, Inuyasha, walked over into a wooden shrine and didn't come back out. The mother went back into the house so that the courtyard was vacant once again. Sesshou looked down at the tree roots and thought heavily.
"Rin, did you see that couple? Specifically the guy. Wasn't he--," Sesshou looked over to the thing his was pressing against the tree and gasped. Rin was no longer there. He was now just pressing the rough bark. He looked around frantically calling out Rin's name. His eyes traveled to the courtyard and he saw Rin striding toward the wooden shrine where the other two people had gone. She was halfway there already.
"Rin!"
Sesshou used his demon speed to catch up to the dreamy girl.
"I don't think this is such a good idea anymore, my dear. Who knows what we're doing."
But his words fell on empty ears. Sesshou finally gave up and walked close behind Rin. They entered the wooden shrine where there was an old well. Sesshou halted and tilted his head curiously.
"Rin…what are you planning to do?" Sesshou asked frightfully. Rin continued to approach the edge of the well. Once there, she swung one leg over the side.
"Don't!" Sesshou rushed to her and held her back just as she was about to plunge over the side.
"Are you crazy?! That well is empty. You'll get seriously injured if you jump down!"
Rin started to get distressed and she whimpered.
"Purple magic…home," she whispered urgently. Sesshou held fast.
"What are you talking about?" Rin somehow began to slip from Sesshou's grip. "Rin, NO!"
As she fell over the side Sesshou tried to grab her, but missed. He shouted and plummeted down after her. He expected to impact with a hard floor soon, but he fell for what seemed like hours. Shortly after jumping down, he lost sight of Rin. To his amazement, he was suddenly surrounded by violet glowing lights. He felt cool air caress his skin, and the smell of lush foliage filled his nose.
Just as he was beginning to relax, he hit a musty ground; however, not as hard as he expected. Sesshou blinked and stood up. He was standing at the bottom of the well, although when he looked up he saw a clear blue sky.
"I thought this place was in a shrine. Where's the ceiling?" Sesshou wondered aloud. Soon after, Sesshou realized that Rin wasn't anywhere to be seen. Sesshou hurriedly bounded side to side until he was over the edge of the well. What he saw next shocked him.
"Where am I?" he asked himself. Around him was a luscious forests. The sound of young birds traveled to his ears. Scents of flowers, moist soil and wild creatures drifted around him. Through all the fragrances he picked up the smell of fresh apricots and daisies; Rin's scent. Still new to his enhanced sense of smell, Sesshou followed her sweet odor through the many trees.
