Chapter Nine
"I just hope to sleep and never awaken,
Nothing left in this world could replace what you have taken."
-Sandy Cheney
Kagome usually had a good sense of premonition when it came to approaching disasters. Actually, no, that was a lie. She liked to think she had though, because that would then mean she had a hint of warning - warning enough to avoid the oncoming chaos.
But alas, that was Kagome's blind spot.
After all, she'd sensed nothing on her fifteenth birthday other than the jubilation that she was now old enough to go see that movie in the theater with Hojo. Little did she know that no sooner would she step into the well-house that an icky centipede woman would crawl out of the well, grab her, then crawl away again. To a different century, no less.
And there was nothing to prepare her for her fourteenth birthday party - other than the fact that Souta seemed to have mislaid one of his precious cherry bombs. But that was no surprise. The real surprise came when Kagome's birthday cake exploded on the third line of "Happy Birthday to You!", having been implanted with Souta's cherry for reasons still yet to be explained.
So perhaps Kagome's disaster perception hadn't been on top form the last couple of years… so perhaps that was also why she'd been able to have sex with Inuyasha without an inkling that she was walking into a sneaky trap laid by Fate.
Screw Naraku. Fate was her newest, most deadly foe.
Kagome chewed her lips and fingernails alternately as she dwelled on all the things that could possibly go wrong starting from that moment onwards. Inuyasha was sleeping noisily beside her, one arm strewn out as a pillow for her head and the other dangling off the edge of the bed. Perhaps he'd roll over and crush her to death? That would be pretty bad.
Or perhaps the ceiling would fall and squash the pair of them?
Or perhaps WWIII would start at that very moment and The Higurashi Shrine would be the first place to get the bomb?
Or perhaps - and this was such a terrifying thought that Kagome couldn't help but quiver in fear - perhaps she would fail her upcoming test?! Kagome shuddered again. She could barely stand thinking about it…
Maybe it was a good idea to skip school today on the grounds that there was a chance she might fail the test… then at least she'd have more time to revise before taking it at a later date.
Today seemed a good a day as any to get back to the Sengoku Jidai.
"Inuyasha…?" Kagome prodded him in the ribs with a finger. "Inuyasha, wake up."
"Geroff…" he mumbled.
Kagome poked him harder. "Don't be so lazy! It's eight o'clock!"
"What's 'eight oh clock'?" Inuyasha yawned widely and stretched languidly.
"It's between seven and nine o'clock." Kagome sat up, carefully keeping the bed cover clamped over her breasts. "I figured we should get back to the Sengoku Jidai today."
Inuyasha' stretched paused, half-finished. His eyes popped open and he regarded her peculiarly. "Excuse me?"
"Yeah… if the well's clear." Kagome shrugged.
There was something so odd about the way they were talking. It was so normal… so casual… so like every other conversation they usually had. Except they were both naked.
Inuyasha suddenly seemed to realize that fact as his eyes scanned her scantily clad form. That puzzled pout slipped straight into a leer as his hand snaked out beneath the quilt towards her thigh. "What's the hurry? We've got a lot of time on our hands here and it's and empty house…"
Scenario #1: The Abandoned House (Revisited)
Kagome wasn't entirely sure what he had in mind was a good idea. After all, was it wise to tempt fate twice in the same morning?
But all the same, there was a naughty side of Kagome that seemed to have woken up with her, and this Miss. Naughty wanted nothing more than for Inuyasha's hand to travel further than just her thigh. Kagome's face flamed at the thought and she quickly shooed his hand away.
"Inuyasha…" she groaned in her 'oh no, not this again' tone. "I'm still kinda sore from the last time…"
Inuyasha looked up at her thoughtfully. "So am I." After a moment of consideration, he reached up and tugged her back down onto the bed with him. "But who said we have to go all the way again?"
His lips sealed against hers, and Kagome's eyebrows shot up as his hands maneuvered her body closer to his. But that was as far as he went, and he seemed content enough in just attacking her lips. Kagome's hesitation lasted only for a moment, before she entwined her fingers behind his nape and met his kiss with equal passion.
A gentle warmth spread over her… not the dizzying craving of the lust she'd been victim to over the past week. This was simple pleasure. Simple happiness. How many times had she dreamed of holding Inuyasha like this? How many times had she berated herself that it was an unattainable fantasy.
Inuyasha broke the kiss to nuzzle the sensitive place behind her ear. "Did you enjoy last night?" he asked breathlessly.
Despite the impending doom of her fortune, Kagome couldn't help but smile. "Yeah…"
Of course, it hadn't been quite what she'd expected. After what her friends had said about sex, and what the romance books had told her, she'd been expecting something akin to an intense euphoria. Feelings one would have when tumbling over a cliff into passion. Fireworks behind her eyes as something inside her exploded. She'd expected to bond with Inuyasha in a physical and spiritual way - for their hearts to come together as one!
Rather, it had been less like her dream and more of a sweaty, silly affair. Fun, nonetheless, and she wouldn't say no to doing it again, however anticlimactic her expectations had proven.
Maybe Inuyasha was right? Sex… it was a little overrated.
Most relieving of all, she didn't feel changed as she'd thought she might. Everything had felt perfectly natural.
Inuyasha's attentions had turned to her collarbone. "I told you you'd like it." He said, in between his kisses. "We should do it more often."
For a terrible moment, Kagome thought that her initial concerns had been right after all. Was this just a good way to pass the time? A simple way of getting his jollies?
But then he lifted his head and she locked eyes with him… and what she saw there wasn't flippancy. She doubted it was possible to see 'love' shining in anyone's eyes, but there was definitely more in that gaze than mere hunger.
Devotion burned there too.
Kagome's mouth went dry and her hand reached out to cup his cheek. To touch his beautiful face and all the eagerness and devotion that lay there. He wasn't taking her for granted, even though for a moment, Kagome had done just that…
"Kiss me again…" she whispered.
He obeyed without complaint, and at the first stroke of his tongue against hers, a familiar flame roared into life in her belly. The temperature of the room began to climb as his hands roamed her body restlessly. She squirmed, trying to gain as much skin-contact as possible, all whilst kissing each other wildly.
When Inuyasha rolled her beneath him, disturbing the bed spread in haphazard manner, and when Kagome's felt the distinct hardness of his length jutting against her stomach, she knew that there would be a repeat of last night. But once again, she was too far gone with the passion to even care about what this could do to her fortune.
A heavy groan escaped her throat as Inuyasha moved to devour her throat again. Clammy fingers grasped at his shoulders and nonsensical words spilled for her mouth. "I love you…" Or were they Freudian slips? "God, I love you so much…"
The muscles beneath her fingertips stiffened slightly and a frown pulled at Kagome's brows as she wondered what that meant. But no sooner had the doubt crossed her mind, the unease seemed to leave Inuyasha and he was stepping up the assault on her body.
He was just coaxing her thighs apart when the front door slammed.
Both teenagers froze in a compromized position, each holding their breath.
"Oh my - that was a lot of awful traffic!" Someone who sounded suspiciously like Kagome's mother exclaimed from somewhere downstairs. "You better be quick Souta - you have to get changed for school!"
"Ohhhh!" came the whining response. "Can't I just take today off?"
"Not a chance, young man. Go get ready now, you have to be gone in five minutes."
Kagome's eye widened in horror as she gaped up at Inuyasha who gaped back with equal terror.
"Shit…" he muttered.
"Quick…" Kagome wiggled out from under him. "Get dressed! Hurry!"
It was almost comical the way they managed to scramble up from the bed, leaving the sheets in a maelstrom as they charged around the room looking for the various articles of clothing they'd lost the night before - all on the tips of their toes.
Well that had been a nice spontaneous vacation, Mrs Higurashi thought cheerfully as she unloaded her bags in the kitchen. It had been nice to get away from the house for a change. Being an unemployed widow and stuck at home all day was enough to make anyone a manic depressant… add on a daughter who was never home and hanging out with only god knew what kind of mob and coming home periodically with the odd blood stain on her clothes. Add on another child who was going around his school telling everyone that his sister's boyfriend was a demon - and getting various letters home that were questioning her child's sanity, and an eccentric father who just - wouldn't - move - out!
In fact, Mrs Higurashi had been very close to another nervous breakdown… not that she'd worry anyone by letting them know.
But that didn't matter. She was all better now! Refreshed from her little holiday and ready to battle a few months more of intense loneliness and-
What was that noise?
Mrs Higurashi looked up at the ceiling, realising that the sound had come from Kagome's room… and since both her son and her father were in their respective bedrooms downstairs, it could only mean that Kagome was home!
Dropping her bags, Mrs Higurashi hurried out of the kitchen and trotted up the stairs. "Kagome?" she called as she approached her daughter's door. "Kagome - we're back."
But when she opened the door, there was no one.
The bedroom was untouched; the bed made and a wash of fresh air bathed the room from the open window. Slightly disappointed, Kagome's mother made her way to the window and shut it again - obviously her daughter wasn't aware of the dangers of burglars. How careless.
Looking around the room, Mrs Higurashi folded her arms and tried to think of how to make the room any tidier in preparation for her daughter's next visit. Perhaps if she could be a better mother than her daughter would lover her more and spend time at home for a change…?
So Mrs Higurashi started going around the room, picking up the discarded pairs of socks, skirts and panties that marked Kagome's room as the typical teenage room.
But wait… since when did Kagome wear a fundoshi?
Mrs Higurashi stared at the medieval article hanging on the end of her finger for a good minute or two before shaking her head and adding it to the pile. Who was she to judge what Kagome bought while she was over in the Sengoku Jidai?
The clothes were deposited in the nearest laundry basket before Mrs H went on to fetch the garbage can. There wasn't much in there other than a few scrunched up balls of paper and the plastic wrappings off a few energy bars… and…
"Oh my…" Mrs Higurashi almost dropped the can in shock.
A condom wrapper…
"That was close…" Kagome panted as she slouched against the well, safely back in the Sengoku Jidai… no matter how much of an oxymoron 'safe' and 'sengoku jidai' was together.
"Yeah…" Inuyasha was resting his hands on his knees nearby. "And I've seen what they do to men who taint the family's daughters…"
Kagome shot him a suspicious look.
"I mean… I've seen what they do to Miroku." He shrugged.
Kagome turned her gaze back to the earth beside her as a tense sigh escaped her lips. That had been close. Way too close. In fact, they'd only just gotten out of the window as her mother had started opening the door. What if Mrs Higurashi had looked out the window and seen them? What if she decided to change the bed sheets and found the blood…?
Well, that one Kagome could blame on her period if necessary, so perhaps it wasn't a total disaster if her mother saw it…
But what if there was something else - something that Kagome had missed that would land her in so much trouble that she'd regret her night with Inuyasha forever?
And what if the repercussions were something else?
Too many doubts and worries plagued her mind…
"Kagome? Hello? Anyone in there?"
Inuyasha's knuckles wrapped against her head, and Kagome's chin jerked up - only just realising that she was being spoken to. "Sorry?" she asked.
"I said we should probably go back to the village." He held out his hand for her to take. "Come on."
Kagome regarded it carefully before hesitantly clasping his wrist and levering herself to her feet. She patted her skirt down carefully, trying to smooth the rumples and wrinkles sustained from, and by the time she lifted her head Inuyasha was already making his way off through the trees.
Pulling a pout, Kagome moved after him. She was a little disappointed that he wasn't being more romantic for all the intimacy they'd shared last night. But then again, what did she expect? She knew well enough that Inuyasha wasn't a romantic person and hadn't she already decided that she didn't want anything between them to change?
Well… perhaps just a little bit of common affection would go appreciated…?
Unfortunately, Kagome had been staring at Inuyasha's back so hard that she hadn't been paying attention to where her feet landed again. It wasn't long before the bridge of her foot caught under the very same tree root as before and she went plummeting to the ground with a helpless squeak.
Scenario #2: The 'Innocent' Fall
Inuyasha glanced back over his shoulder. "Smooth, Kagome. Very smooth." He intoned, amused.
Kagome almost growled. He was just lucky that she hadn't sprained her ankle this time. "Maybe you could stop laughing a moment and find it in your precious time to help me up?" she bit out.
"Hey - you have two feet - do it yourself!" he shot back, responding to her anger in a heartbeat.
"I would! But I think I broke one of them!" A total lie of course, but Inuyasha didn't need to know that. In fact, Kagome got a brief moment of smugness when she saw the worry cross his face.
"Seriously?" he was beside her in an instant and was crouching down to help her sit back against the tree, his hands hovering near her ankles. "Which one?"
"Um…" she pressed an index finger to her lips. "Neither." She waited for him to inevitably bite her head off for causing him concern. "I lied."
But all he did was shrug and smirk. "Figured. You'd be screaming your head off otherwise…"
Kagome smiled, despite the mild insult, and looked down at where his fingers stroked against her shins absently. This was terribly familiar… hadn't they already done this once before?
"You know… last night…" Kagome began hesitantly, looking up at Inuyasha was dubious eyes. "Do you think that we made the right decision?"
Inuyasha's hands were snatched away from her legs like he'd been scorched. Doubt crept into his intense amber gaze. "What?" he asked sharply. "Do you regret it?"
"No!" Kagome chirped quickly. "That's not what I meant!" she lowered her head and tried again. "I mean… do you think that it was wise? Considering how much we have at stake right now? What if we got caught up in the moment? We didn't think about repercussions-"
Hard fingers clasped her upper arms and Kagome jerked her eyes up to meet Inuyasha's. "Are you talking about that stupid fortune?"
"Um… maybe." Before he could leap into another rant about stupid superstition, Kagome rattled on. "But what if there had been no fortune telling? That still doesn't erase the fact we both have a lot of loose ends to be tied up!"
"I told you - nothing's changed!" he barked at her.
"Of course it has! If not now then it will later when people find out about us." People like Kikyo and Kouga and Sesshomaru and…
"Kagome, nothing will change. The mission for Naraku and the Shikon shards won't be jeopardized and none of our 'loose ends' have to find out about us…" His hands smoothed down her arms in a placating manner. "All it means… is that whenever we're alone I won't be able to keep my hands off you."
Something in the way he said that made butterflies race from the tips of her toes to the pit of her stomach. Her breath pitched unevenly and suddenly all she could focus on was Inuyasha's lips. "We're alone now…" she pointed out.
"I noticed that." He said in a low voice, his hands circling her thighs with growing sensuality. "So you don't regret what we did?"
Kagome licked her lips, but was unsure how to answer. She didn't regret it yet… but uncertainty still darkened the recesses of her thoughts.
"You shouldn't take any notice of your stupid friend's fortunes." He reminded her. "She told me that I would do something within two days and regret it the rest of my life!"
Kagome stiffened. "When did she tell you that?"
Inuyasha frowned. "When I went to her house looking for you."
"Do you think… do you think she meant… sex?" Kagome bit her lip.
It was all Inuyasha could do to stop himself from strangling the poor girl. "It was a load of bullshit, Kagome! Nothing's happened that I would ever dream of regretting - let alone taking you! That was the best moment of my life!"
A heavy blush settled on Kagome's cheeks. "Really?" she asked meekly.
"It was better than I could ever have imagined." He told her earnestly. "When I entered you - it was fantastic. It felt so right and so perfect that I realized you were right - it was a big deal. I've never felt so… at home… in my entire life. I'm so glad you let me fuck you. I can't believe I managed to wait so long - we should have done this ages ago! I'm so relieved you came round."
Kagome's blush had grown steadily worse. "Really…?"
"Well… aren't you?"
"Uh… yeah." Her eyes darted to the ground. "But… don't you think that it was a very little ordeal for so much hype about it?"
Inuyasha blinked at her. "No."
"Then… me neither." At least one of them had had some kind of epiphany last night… "So… you don't think that us being involved will ruin anything else…?"
"Why should it? It isn't anyone's business what we do." he shrugged.
Kagome frowned slightly, unsure that what she was about to say would be out of line. "What about Kikyo…? Surely it's her business."
Inuyasha stared at her a moment, looking puzzled. Then suddenly he leaned forward and kissed her firmly on the lips. Kagome sat there, stunned, patiently awaiting the response to her question. After a moment, the kiss was broken and Inuyasha playfully bumped his nose against hers. "You worry about too much." He scolded, before kissing her again.
I know I do… but that isn't answering my question!
For a moment, Kagome had no intention of responding to his kiss. He'd annoyed her and she was going to show him… but her brain had no say in the matter. Her body softened instinctively to the hard pressure of his and before she knew it she was reaching out to pull him closer and-
And suddenly he had torn himself away.
Kagome blinked, disorientated as she found herself embracing thin air. "Inuyasha, what-"
"Yay! Kagome!" A small ball of ginger trouble suddenly hurtled out of the bushes. "You're back!
"Shippo!" Kagome cried happily, catching the child in her arms and swinging him up to eye level. "I'm so happy to see you!"
"Kagome, you missed all the snow!" Shippo wailed. "Me and Kirara had tons of fun building stuff - we built snow people! We made one of you and Inuyasha!"
Kagome glanced up at Inuyasha who was quietly steaming to himself a short distance away. She tried to give him an apologetic smile, but he simply 'keh'ed and turned away.
"Come on," Shippo jumped down. "I'll show you!"
"Oh… ok!" Kagome gestured for Inuyasha to follow as she picked up her bag and trotted after the young fox demon willingly. She turned to beckon Inuyasha… but found he had disappeared from sight.
For a moment, Kagome was thrown. He'd been there only a moment ago… he must have just spun and fled the moment her back was turned. Was he just annoyed at the interruption?
Kagome sighed and continued after Shippo.
Inuyasha would find his own way to the village in good time…
Kikyo… her scent was unmistakable.
Inuyasha had stilled the moment the cool breeze had washed over him, bringing with it the familiar stench of death, earth and human remains. It could only mean that the undead miko was nearby… and was all but calling upon him.
The hanyou spared the schoolgirl one torn look. She was cooing over the child, letting him lead her back to the village… she would be safe there. And as much as he didn't like the thought of leaving her side so soon after consummating their relationship, Inuyasha felt he had no choice.
Or perhaps he felt that this opportunity presented itself so rarely that he couldn't ignore it?
He left without a word to the other two and dashed off through the trees, following the trail of the scent. It lead deeper into his forest, darker and more dangerous than humans and some demons feared to tread.
His journey was short, and it ended in a barren clearing so deep into the forest that no light permeated the trees around him, save for the dappled ribbons from above the canopy.
And there she was. Leaning against the bough of a wizened old willow that leaned enormously over a trickling stream behind her. Two soul catchers, the creatures resembling ghostly insects, wound their long bodies around the branches above her and lowered their heads down to receive tender strokes.
"Welcome back." She said impassively. "I've been hearing a lot of interesting things from a little bird… or two…"
"Kikyou…"
