“Kagome, Inuyasha! Would ye two stop yer arguing fer two minutes!? I’m an old woman; I can’t stand to listen to ye all day!” The woman exited her hut and glared crossly at the two teens with her one eye.

“Sorry Lady Kaede!” Kagome looked at her feet in embarrassment. Inuyasha only ‘feh’ed and looked away.

“Come in children, I’ve got supper ready fer ye.” They nodded and entered the hut to eat.

“Kagome, how did yer mother take the news?” They nodded and entered the hut to eat.

“Well…Surprisingly well I might say. I mean my grandfather and brother weren’t there to fuss over Inuyasha…But my mom seemed to think it was a…’lovely’ idea. She asked questions…Simple ones of course. But I told her I’d be home before school starts in three months.

Kaede nodded and sipped more of her soup. “That’s good. Well, ye two will have the hut to yerselves tonight; I have to look after a little boy who’s sick.”

“Okay, when will you be back Lady Kaede?” The young miko blinked up at the older.

“I’ll be back before ye leave in the morn.” She replied before leaving the small hut.

The two sat in silence for a while before the silence became awkward.

“Err…Kagome?” She turned towards the boy, giving him her attention. “Do you remember when I asked you what a ‘boyfriend’ was?” A slight pink tinged her cheeks and she nodded.

“Well you never answered…” She nodded once more and tried to work the work the words out in her head.

“Well…Usually, I’m supposing, the term is only sued with humans, like me.” He nodded. “And…It’s when a boy and a girl decide they like each other. They decide the won’t see anyone else. Just them. Then, they generally get closer, or further apart, and the relationship could lead to marriage, or breaking up.” She looked at him, seeing if he understood.

“You mean, like courting?” She nodded quickly and smiled.

“Exactly like courting! Only ‘boyfriend’ is what the girl would call the boy she was courting.”

“And a boy would call a girl a ‘girlfriend’?”

“Yes! See, that was easy, wasn’t it?”

“Yeah…” Another awkward silence filled the room. It was starting to get darker outside.

“Inuyasha?” He opened one eye and looked at her.

“Hm?” She fiddled with the hem of her skirt.

“Well…When Kouga said he wanted me to be his…’mate’…What did he mean?”

“He said that!?” The hanyou looked like he wanted to kill the wolf. She nodded timidly. “What did you say to him?”

“I-I didn’t!” He seemed calmed by that fact. “But…What does it mean?”

“Err…You know what a boyfriend and girlfriend is…So you know what courting is. Well…Most of the time demons court before…mating. Mating is where they…Err…claim one another, and no one else can have them…”

The girl’s face heated up in embarrassment. “Wish I hadn’t asked…” She mumbled, looking at her hands in her lap.

He chuckled. “It’s okay…Most people in this era already know what a mate is…I just don’t know how to explain…”

“Yeah…” Yet another awkward silence filled the room. Kagome searched through her big yellow bag for something.

“What’re you looking for?” She frowned and sat back on her heels.

“I can’t find my sleeping bag.”

“You’re what?”

“What I sleep on…I think I forgot it.”

“Oh…”

“Where do you usually sleep?” She blinked at him.

“A tree.” She blinked again.

“Seriously!?” Her eyes widened in shock.

“How can you get comfortable in a tree!?”

He shrugged and ‘keh’ed. “They’re more comfortable than the ground.”

“Oh…Well good night Inuyasha.” She put her head on her book bag and tried to get comfortable. Once she was semi-there, she closed her eyes and tried to sleep. She kept shivering. It was apparently a very cold, windy night.

She felt something warm drop over her. Immediately her eyes snapped open. She could see the retreating form of a haori-less hanyou exiting the hut.

‘Wha-? He gave me his haori? Maybe there is a heart in that jerk somewhere yet.’

They still aren’t on very good terms; they just didn’t do anything to get on one another’s nerves this afternoon. Well, not after Kaede left that is.
