Double Take
Chapter 3: Don’t Go in to the Forest Alone!
Anubis_Himura

** Feudal Era **

Kagome dodged another attack from the Youkai in front of her. This was no ordinary Youkai. This youkai had the physical make-up of a scorpion demon, but the unique psychological powers of some kind of shape-shifting sorcerer. Kagome hid behind a large tree and tried to catch her breath. This youkai was definitely more than she had bargained for. Kagome came running out from behind the tree, baring her claws and preparing to strike. The Youkai countered and knocked her down. Kagome skidded across the ground, she was winded. She sat up and felt a warm trickle down her cheek. She had been scratched. She stood up, ready to fight again, but before she got a chance the beast was slashed through the heart. Kagome looked to see what had happened, it had been so quick. She saw Inuyasha standing firmly, putting his sword back in place. She smiled slightly but it quickly faded away when she realized her mates’ anger. Besides, she could take care of herself, and she didn’t need Inuyasha following her around like she was helpless.

“How many times do I have to warn you Kagome?! Do not go in to the forest alone!!!” Inuyasha huffed, putting his hands across his chest like a small child who has just won a fight.

“Inuyasha, I am not a little girl! I can take care of myself!” Kagome retaliated, tears welling up in her eyes.

“Well obviously not! You were almost killed by that Youkai.” Inuyasha’s voice was becoming softer, but he still held his firm tone.

“I would have been fine.” Kagome remained her position and tried to hide the fact that tears were now falling freely down her cheeks.

“Kagome, I just worry about you. These times aren’t safe. There are so many attacks on young Youkai. And Hanyou are even more easily exploited.” Inuyasha’s voice had lost all harshness at the sight of his mates’ tears. “Don’t cry angel.”

“You treat me like I am a child.”

“You’re my mate. It’s my responsibility to take care of you.” He walked over to her slowly, she could get violent when she was crying. “I love you.” He said, hugging her gently.

“I love you too Inuyasha.” She said, wiping at her tears hurriedly. “I just don’t like to be yelled at.”

“I know. I have a temper.” Kagome laughed a little and nodded.

“But… I have a tiny bit of a temper too.” She added, turning in Inuyasha’s arms to face him. “I’m sorry Inuyasha, I shouldn’t have gone into the black forest alone. I should have stayed closer to the village.”

“Thank you. I’m sorry I yelled at you.” He kissed the top of her head and she hugged him back. “You know Kagome, you are the only one who can make me apologize.” She giggled slightly.

“Now come on, Shippo must be worried about us.” Kagome started sprinting back toward the village.

Inuyasha rolled his eyes; it was her fault after all that anyone would be worrying anyway, but he sprinted after her nonetheless.

Inuyasha sprinted into Kagome and knocked both of them over. “Why did you stop running?” he asked.

“Do you smell that Yash?” She asked, sniffing the air. “It’s Sesshomaru. He’s near.”

Inuyasha sniffed around and realized that his brother was very close. “What does he want?”

“Inuyasha! Kagome!” Shippo came running up to them, leaping into Kagome’s arms.

“Hi Shippo. Did you and Kaede have a good time?” she asked, hiding the fact that she was worried about Sesshomaru’s presence.

“We were making soup for lunch. Then she fell asleep. She’s not very entertaining.”

Kagome laughed at Shippo’s facial expression and started carrying him back to Kaede’s hut. Inuyasha nodded at her, signaling that he would deal with Sesshomaru.

“Let’s go get some lunch huh?”

“Coming Yash?” Shippo called.

“I’ll be there in a minute runt.” Inuyasha replied.

“’Kay.”

Inuyasha waited until Kagome had carried Shippo out of sight before yelling to Sesshomaru. “What do you want Sesshomaru?”

“I was in the area.” Sesshomaru said coolly.

“Don’t make me rip your head off.” Inuyasha warned.

Sesshomaru came out from behind a large oak tree, wielding his sword menacingly. “How very masculine.” He said in a bored tone.

“What do you want!?” Inuyasha scowled again.

“It pains me that we cannot be… brotherly toward each other-“

“Who are you trying to fool? You hate me just as much as I hate you!”

“Fine half-breed you want to play the hate game, that’s just perfect. But in all honesty Inuyasha, the land needs your…” Sesshomaru looked as though he were going to be sick.

“Needs my what? Carcass on a platter?” Inuyasha withdrew his sword and prepared to fight his half-brother.

“I was going to say… skill.”

“Skill?” Inuyasha lost his menacing pose at his confusion toward what Sesshomaru had just said.

“Yes. On the battle field. The west is in trouble. There are too many youkai we need all the help we can get.”

“I can’t fight with you Sesshomaru. It’s not my land. Dad left you everything because you’re the pure blood. I just do what I can to support my mate and to survive.”

“Inuyasha, your friends and your mate are all wonderful fighters. We need help.” Sesshomaru seemed so down and melancholy. Inuyasha was at a loss for words.

“No. We just started our life together… we took in a kitsune who had no parents. We can’t expect our friends to want to go fight.”

“Then you are a traitor to your people and land!” Sesshomaru’s anger flared up again and he brandished his poison demon claws.

“If you want to fight me because I won’t fight for you fine!” Inuyasha held his stance. “Let’s fight!”

“Kagome! I want to play outside!” Shippo said, looking excitedly out the small hut window.

“Okay Shippo. Let’s go to Miroku and Sango’s and maybe Sango will let you play with Kirara.”

“Okay!” Shippo jumped onto Kagome shoulder and she sprinted through the village toward the monk and the demon slayers hut.

‘Inuyasha… what is taking you so long? What did Sesshomaru want from you!?’

“Well hello Kagome! Lovely to see you here.” Miroku smiled from the roof of his hut, apparently there was a leak.

“Hello Miroku!” Kagome smiled sweetly, her fangs glistening in the sun. “We just wanted to stop by and say hello.”

“Well it’s lovely to see you. Sango is inside, but I imagine she can hear us.” He smiled pleasantly and sure enough Sango walked out of the hut.

“Hello Kagome.” She hugged the girl and smiled. “Hey Shippo.” She smiled down to the kit.

“Can I play with Kirara?” Shippo asked sweetly.

“Of course. Kirara!” the fire-cat came running out of the hut and transformed smiling at Shippo.

“Thanks Sango.” Shippo smiled and ran off with Kirara.

“So where’s Inuyasha?” Sango asked politely.

“He’s off dealing with Sesshomaru.” Kagome said, looking back toward the black forest. “I don’t know what about though.”

“Probably something stupid.” Sango laughed and motioned toward the hut. “Come on, let’s have something to drink and a snack.” Kagome smiled and walked into the hut. “Come on Miroku, take a break.”

“No Sango my love, I’m afraid I must finish this before the sun is dim. For if I cannot provide you shelter and warmth, what kind of man am I? What kind of husband can I call myself?”

“Yeah, yeah, just don’t fall.” Sango rolled her eyes and entered the hut.

Kagome smiled at Sango’s remark and took a seat by the window (so she could watch for Inuyasha).

“You worried about him?” Sango asked, setting a cup of water down in front of Kagome.

“Yeah. Sesshomaru’s scent was uneasy… like he was dreading something. It wasn’t the normal scent of ‘I’m better than you’. You know?”

“I guess yeah. I don’t know, I can’t smell different moods.” Sango smiled sitting down across from Kagome.

“Comes from being a Hanyou I guess.” Kagome smirked and took a sip of water.

“That smirk is starting to look just like Inuyashas.” Sango mentioned.

Kagome let out a quick laugh. “Guess he’s rubbing off on me a little eh?”

Sango watched as her friend stared out the window, the concern never leaving her face.

“Go.” Sango said.

“What?” Kagome looked to her best friend.

“Go to Inuyasha. I’ll make sure Shippo doesn’t run off or anything.” Kagome smiled and hugged Sango.

“Thanks!” With that she sprinted out the door, yelling a quick good bye to Miroku.

“Good bye Kagome!” he called after her, but she was long gone.
