Chapter 6: The Announcement

“Mom! What’s with the cars outside!?” Souta came running into the backyard. “Is Kagome home?” He smiled when he saw his sister, sitting on the grass playing with Buyo.

“Hey runt!” Kagome smiled and stood up, walking toward her little brother. “You’re almost taller than me! How did that happen?”

“I grew.” Souta said, his tone sarcastic. “Or maybe you’re shrinking!” Kagome smiled at her brother and hugged him.

“I missed you runt.”

“Stop calling me that!” Souta complained, but secretly he had missed his sister a lot.

“Souta, this is Inuyasha.” Kagome pointed to Inuyasha, who extended his hand. “Yash, Souta.”

Souta shook Inuyasha’s hand and smiled. “You remind me of someone.” He said.

“Who?” Inuyasha asked.

“I don’t know. If I think of it I’ll tell you though.”

“Sure.” Inuyasha looked at Kagome who shrugged.

“Souta, I want that backpack up into your room.”

“Yes Mamma.” Souta smiled and went inside.

“So Kagome, my brother has told me a lot about you.” Sesshomaru was now standing beside Kagome, Rin had taken Inuyasha over to mingle with the grandparents.

“All good things I hope.” Kagome smiled nervously.

“Naturally. Would there be anything bad to tell?” Sesshomaru asked, a slight smirk almost gracing his lips.

“You’d have to ask him.” She retorted, a smirk of her own forming.

“I can see what Inuyasha likes in you.” Sesshomaru nodded his head in affirmation. “You’ll do.” He said mysteriously before walking off to join his father.

Kagome stared after the mysterious man for a few moments before turning her attention to the soft coo of a female voice.

“Hello?” a gorgeous woman came around the side of the house, followed closely by a man approximately Inuyasha’s height, with shining black hair tied in a loose ponytail at the nape of his neck.

“Ah, my dear Izayoi.” Inutaisho kissed his wife on the cheek and smiled to everyone else.

“Inuyasha my baby!” Izayoi swept Inuyasha up in her arms and hugged him close to her. “I’ve missed you dreadfully! Call me more sweetie. Are you getting enough to eat? You look so thin… are you working out too much? Oh lets get you some snacks.”

“Mother… I’m not five.” Inuyasha smiled and hugged his mother again, “but thank you for caring so much.” He whispered.

“Oh I’ve just missed you terribly.”

There had always been a special bond between Inuyasha and his mother. Izayoi had always babied Inuyasha just a little extra than she babied Sesshomaru; not that she loved either any less. It just happened that Sesshomaru was more like his father and very business oriented with a more stable outlook on life… where as Inuyasha was more of a mamma’s boy with the ability to not care about much of anything.

“And there’s my little Sesshomaru!” Izayoi hugged Sesshomaru closely and pat him on the back. “You’re looking thin too. Doesn’t Rin feed you?”

“Well if she could cook I might eat more.” Sesshomaru said, a smile escaping briefly from his lips.

Rin slapped him on the arm and shook her head. “I can so cook… it’s not my fault you’re so picky!”

“I’m sorry that I like my food a little less than burnt. I’ll get better.” Sesshomaru gulped in fear as he saw the death glare his wife was giving him.

“Now be nice to Rin.” Izayoi hugged Rin as well. “How have you been sweets?”

“I’ve been doing really well Izayoi. How are you?”

“Oh, never better!”
“Hey Miroku!” Inuyasha hugged Miroku.

“Yo Yash. What’s up?”

“Not much man. It’s awesome that you’re here.”

“Yea it’s totally cool. Your dad told me about it the other day and your mom just came to get me this morning.”

“Yea. That’s cool.”

“So, you are the infamous Miroku are you?” Kagome came up beside Inuyasha and extended her hand to the boy in front of her. “I am Kagome, it is nice to finally meet you.”

“Hello Kagome. The honor is mine I assure you.” Miroku kissed Kagomes hand and smiled devilishly.

“Back off.” Inuyasha growled.

“Noted.” Miroku released Kagomes hand, his smile never faltering. “Is that Sango?” Miroku whispered to Inuyasha.

“Yea.” He whispered back.

“I think I’ll go say hello.”

“He’s gonna get hurt.” Inuyasha said calmly.

“Oh yea.” Kagome agreed.

Kagome didn’t even have time to move before a loud slap was heard. Miroku came back to Inuyasha and Kagome with a red mark on his face. “She’s still mad.” He said calmly.

“Ya think?” Inuyasha asked smirking.

“Okay listen up everyone. Now that we are all here… I think it’s time to choose our costumes for the party. Let see there’s...” Ms. Higarashi made a quick head count of people, “eleven of us. Three cars ought to do it. I’ll drive, and Inuyasha if you would be a dear,”

“I would love to drive.” Inutaisho volunteered.

“Perfect, thank you so much. Let’s go. I’ll lead the precession. Off we go.”

Kagome bounced onto her bed and smiled. She loved her costume and couldn’t wait until the next days party to wear it. Inuyasha and Kagome had bought matching costumes, as had Izayoi and Inutaisho. It was going to be so much fun, to forget who they were for a night and get lost in the bliss of make-believe. And, of course, they were announcing their engagement. Kagome smiled, one day soon she would be Mrs. Inuyasha Takashi.

“What are you so happy about?” Inuyasha asked, having just entered from the bathroom.

“Just that I love you.” She continued smiling. Inuyasha sat down beside her on the bed, holding her hand in his.

“I love you too baby girl.” He kissed her hand sweetly. “Tomorrow can’t come soon enough.”

“I agree.” Kagome kissed Inuyasha softly. “But, it’ll be here shortly, because it’s bed time.” Kagome jumped up and grabbed her pajamas out of her suitcase. “I’ll be back.” She announced.

As promised she came back. She lay down in bed, waiting for Inuyasha to lay down with her. When he hesitated she looked at him curiously. An entire conversation was occurring without them knowing it. She was making sure he was okay, being in her parents house, and he was saying he was okay, just scared that he might not behave in an appropriate manner if he had to sleep next to Kagome.

“I think my mother will forgive you.” Kagome smiled, “Come get some sleep.”

Inuyasha got into bed next to Kagome and smiled. How could you not love the girl? He kissed her softly on the lips, a kiss of love, not lust. “I’ll see you in the morning champ.” He closed his eyes, wrapping his arms around her. Kagome snuggled into his embrace and fell instantly to sleep.

The sun rose happily and as it rose higher in the sky, rounding out the morning, Kagome opened her eyes lazily. She looked at her watch as the seconds passed away. It was ten thirty.

“Crap.” She hit Inuyasha, waking him up.

“What?” he asked, wondering why he was getting hit in the chest.

“It’s ten thirty.” Kagome said as though that were supposed to explain everything.

“Well thanks. Wake me at eleven.” He said, closing his eyes.

“Yash, my mom’s party starts at six.”

“Yea, that’s more than half a day away. Now is sleeping time.”

“You don’t know my mom. She will be nearly done decorating by now. I have to get up and start helping. You can sleep if you want to, but you should spend time with your family. I mean they aren’t around that much, since this is only the first time I’ve met them in nearly two years. Then again maybe you were just embarrassed by me. Oh, but I’m being silly. If you were embarrassed by me, then we wouldn’t be getting married. Unless you felt bad for me and that is why you asked me to marry you. In which case I would be a pity case and I wouldn’t even know it!”

“All right! I’m up! Geez woman.” Inuyasha sat up, rubbing his temples. He turned to Kagome who looked pale and dreadfully upset. “Baby girl, I love you.” He kissed her lips, smiling gently to her. “Don’t worry okay? I’m not embarrassed by you and I feel no shame in our relationship and I the only reason I pity you is ‘cause you fell in love with me.” He kissed her again and got out of bed. “Time for the day?”

Kagome smiled, “Yea.”

“Calm down mother, everything looks lovely and this is going to be an amazing party.” Kagome smiled and looked at all the people flooding the backyard. “I just didn’t realize you invited half of daddy’s firm, and half the woman’s auxiliary.”

“Well, what good is a Halloween party if you don’t invite a few people?”

“True.” Kagome smiled, adjusting her tail. “I’ll go make sure everyone’s happy.”

“Thank you Kagome. You are so good to me.”

Kagome walked out of the kitchen, her ears were in place and her tail was secure. She was dressed up as a cat. Not just a cute little cat, but a sexy temptress cat. She had considered the guests at the party before buying the outfit, but she couldn’t pass it up. She was wearing an orange and white striped leotard, with matching cloves. Her shoes were black stilettos she bought separately. And, naturally, to completely the appearance of a cat, she had the fuzzy triangular ear head band and a tail to match. She thought she looked dang cute.

“There’s my puppy.” She smiled as Inuyasha walked up to her.

“Meow.” He winked at his future bride. “Doesn’t my cat look smashing.”

“But what could is a cat without her dog?” Inuyasha was dressed in accordance with Kagome’s outfit. He had white triangular fuzzy dog ears atop his head, and long white tail. He was wearing a fire-rat haori and red pants. He looked more like a half-demon than a dog, but it was the best Kagome could force out of him.

“When do you want to make the announcement?” Kagome asked.

“Now.” He smirked and ran off to jump on the table.

“Excuse me.” He announced. “Hi, as many of you know, I am Inuyasha Takashi. I am very excited tonight, to announce that I have asked Kagome to marry me. And to my surprise she said yes.”

There were a few ‘awws’ from the random guests that were of no importance to this news. There was a gasp from Izayoi and a plate crashed somewhere in the kitchen. Miroku clapped, Sango joined, shaking her head slightly. Inutaisho was the only one who responded accordingly, with a “that’s my boy.”

“Anyway, that’s all I wanted to say.” Inuyasha jumped off the table and went to receive whatever was coming his way.

“I knew you’d find someone man.” Miroku hugged Inuyasha and then Kagome. “Congrats guys. Can’t believe you didn’t tell me man.”

“What could I do?” he smiled.

“Inuyasha, son, you know what you’re doing.” Inutaisho asked seriously.

“Of course I do, you’re my parents.” He smiled to his father and his mother respectively.

“Oh Inuyasha, my baby’s getting married.” Izayoi hugged Inuyasha and then Kagome. “You take care of him.” She whispered to Kagome.

“Always.”

“I cannot believe you gave me no inclination of your intentions.” Sesshomaru smirked at his brother, which as close to a smile as he could get. “Congratulations. Kagome, I feel sorry for you.”

“Thanks Sess.” Inuyasha rolled his eyes and hugged his brother.

“Congrats you too! Oh I’m so happy!!” Rin hugged Inuyasha and Kagome. “It’s about time someone reined this boy in.”

“All right, all right.” Inuyasha took Kagome by the hand. “If you’ll excuse us.”

Inuyasha took Kagome to the well house, away from everyone else. “Why did you bring me here?” she asked.

“Because,” he turned predatorily to her. “I wanted you alone. If only for a few minutes. Everybody knows now, what do you think about that?”

“I couldn’t be happier.” Kagome kissed Inuyasha passionately. She had never been so relieved, so happy, in her entire life. If her dad had been there that night, she would have been the happiest she had ever been. She was lifted by Inuyasha and placed on the edge of the well. It was hazy, and she wasn’t sure what was happening, but she thought she was falling. She broke apart from Inuyasha and noticed a bluish green light spread out around them. “What’s happening?!”
