CHAPTER 17:ITS ABOUT TIME!!

Sesshoumaru walked slowly through the great mansion, trying to decipher exactly what this quiet was related to. The house was in shadows, making his discomfort grow. With his sensitive ears he could pick up Akiko across the hall in the drawing room, the scraping sound confirming she was sweeping. The chef had left already, and he could make out Inuyasha's scent that was hours old. Along with his was Kagome's, her flowery scent just teasing his nose. But it was just as old as Inuyasha's, so had she not left yet? A small smile tugged his lips. `You sly dog.' But it disappeared as he once again focused on the strange silence. Usually, he could hear Inuyasha's stereo going, or Akiko humming to herself. But there was nothing. Nothing at all. His curiosity peaking, Sesshoumaru went in search of Akiko, hoping she could explain. He found her still sweeping in the drawing room, staring worriedly at the broom in her hands. His uneasiness upped a notch.

"Akiko?" the maid jumped in surprise.

"Oh master Sesshoumaru, I didn't know you were home."

"I just got back," he replied, "Akiko, where's Inuyasha?"

Her eyes clouded with worry, "he's upstairs, with the girl Kagome. I…I think something happened, sir. When they came home, they were quiet, and the girl was quite pale. They haven't been down once, not even to eat."

"When did they get home?" Sesshoumaru asked with a calm tone.

"Hours ago, I don't know exactly…sir, I'm worried. They came and didn't even say one word." Akiko tightened her grip on the broom.

Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes and nodded, "very well. Go home Akiko, get some rest."

With out waiting for her response, Sesshoumaru walked out and headed for the stairs. As he climbed he thought, `they didn't say one word…that not like Inuyasha. He usually has a snide remark for anything. And she said Kagome was pale. Something must have happened between them, that's what would explain this quiet that's making me jumpy.'

He hesitated outside the black door of Inuyasha's room, his hand just resting on the knob. No matter what, Sesshoumaru was respectful of privacy, and to come in now, he might see something he didn't want to. But he had great doubts he would, so here goes. He turned the knob and opened it to a dark room; almost pitch black except for the moonlight coming through the window. On the bed he saw two forms, curled into each other like nothing else mattered. Being the demon he was, Sesshoumaru's feet glided over the carpet to a chair by the bed. He just made it when he saw something twitch under Inuyasha's black torque. He eased himself into the chair as Inuyasha cracked an eye open.

Sesshoumaru looked upon the scene passively, something he excelled in. it worked wonders in meetings. But the scene before was touching even for him. His brother and his woman were spooned on the bed, one of his arms looped around her stomach. One of her arms supported her head, while the other clutched his brother's hand for dear life in her sleep. Sesshoumaru could see the twinkle of Inuyasha's cracked open eye from the light in the hall. He met it calmly.

"What happened?" Sesshoumaru's voice was barely audile, just loud enough for Inuyasha to hear.

He was surprised when the hanyou's eye flared dangerously. "She went to the spa today. Some bastard who worked there tried to rape her. Kouga stopped him in time."

"My spa? The Shikon no Tama?" Inuyasha gave him a slight nod, "well, I'll just have to have a talk with the owner, we don't want this to happen again. Who was it?"

Inuyasha's eye darkened, raising a cautious tone in Sesshoumaru, "a guy from our school, Hojo. He was her ex."

Sesshoumaru nodded silently and smiled when Kagome snuggled closer to Inuyasha in her sleep. "I could arrange it that you can spend a few minutes with him in the interrogation room?"

He heard a silent snort, "as much as I'd like it, I don't want to stress her anymore than she is."

Sesshoumaru only nodded again and got up before Inuyasha stopped him. He could see a slight smile cross the boy's face, "you know, with the thanks I got for those passes, I think she would have made even you blush."

Sesshoumaru gave him a smug grin before quietly walking out. He saved his chuckling until the door was closed.

Inuyasha sighed into Kagome's hair, digging his nose deeper. Her whole scent wrapped around him with comforting arms, calming his very soul. Though it intoxicated his blood at the same time, Inuyasha would give anything to stay like that forever. He opened his eye again to meet the back of her ear. He couldn't deny it; there was no way he could. He had been scared, frightened and shaking on the inside. He covered it with anger to he wouldn't feel it, but now that everything had calmed down, it was creeping up on him again. He let out a shaky sigh. He couldn't even imagine something like this happening, and yet it had. He just wanted to make her happy, make her feel beautiful with all the special treatment, but instead, god had decided that he wanted to curse the hanyou with constant trouble. She was so happy when he talked to her over the phone, her voice light and cheery while telling him she just had the best facial there ever was and now she was going to get a massage. And not even three hours after that, Sango was on the phone crying telling him that some fucking freaky bastard had dared to touch Kagome. Though he was furious, it had shook him down to the core. He never realized she could be so vulnerable. She was always acting tough and being a smartass, but he knew her to be sweet and kind and caring. So many strengths and it only took one thing to make him realize she was still fragile, still a normal girl. Not the goddess that haunted his dreams, or the temptress he kissed, or the firm spouse that loved to mess with him and her friends. But a normal girl, with the normal dangers that normal girls faced. Unable to take his musings anymore, he pulled the sleeping girl closer to him, never wanting her to leave. Cause he knew that if she did, he would be nothing.

Kagome slowly opened her eyes, slowly becoming aware of her surroundings. She felt a pressure on her lower torso and shifted her arm to feel a strong arm tightly clutching her, but not uncomfortable. It was more possessive. Her voice was hard to find, but once found was quiet.

"Inuyasha?"

"You're awake," he stated into her ear. She was a bit surprised at their closeness, but very soon found it perfect. She moved her arm from under her head and rested it on the linen pillow. Everything was a bit foggy.

"Where are we?"

"My room."

"Oh."

Silence reigned for moments. Kagome stared into space until a subtle shaking grabbed her attention. She looked down, though she saw nothing in the dark except for blunt outlines, and felt Inuyasha's shaking hand clasping her own. Wait…his hand was shaking? Why?

She wriggled on the bed, shifting to her other side, facing him. She kept their hands connected until she was all the way over and let go so he wrapped it around her back. Hers curled up to her chest, her eyes scanning his face intently. She couldn't see the reflection his eyes gave in the dark and knew his eyes were closed. She snuggled closer.

"Inuyasha? What's wrong?"

He opened his eyes and saw her worried face perfectly etched in gray in the dark. He took her hands in one of his and stared at them. "Kagome, I…well, I …"

"Inuyasha, just tell me. Remember, no secrets." His quiet tone was worrying her.

Instead, he pulled her close into his arms and rested her head on his shoulder. She didn't complain so he buried his nose in her hair, trying to calm himself.

"Kagome, when Sango called me…to tell me what happened…I …I was scared. It scared the living day lights out of me. To think that something like that would happen…I-I couldn't even begin to tell you the worry I felt. Sure I wanted to strangle the son of a bitch till his eyes popped, but really…I was just praying you were all right. God I can't believe I could have left you alone there…"

She backed away and put a finger to his lips, "shh, this isn't your fault, it just happened. And I wasn't alone, Sango was there, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. And I won't deny I was scared, hell I was frightened, but once you walked in…its like nothing in the world could hurt me. You make me feel safe, and…I never want to stop feeling that way…"

He brought his lips to her forehead; "I will always protect you, no matter what."

She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck. They held each other tightly until each was certain that this was real, and neither was leaving. She lay relaxed in his arms for a few minutes, playing with the ends of his silver mane. The day had been so nerve racking, so… there's not even a name for it. But all she knew was that this was where she always wanted to be, safe and warm in his strong arms. Her heart fluttered. But will it always be this way? Will they always be this close? Or will it fade? Will they die down to bickering and fights? Kagome wiped her mind clean. Don't think that way, live the moment. And right now, she needed to. For her own peace of mind.

The story had spread fast through the school, like it always does. If anyone has a secret, the whole school knows in a matter of hours. Kagome and Sango walked down the halls to lunch, planning to meet the boys there. Inuyasha had protested, wanting to make sure Kagome wouldn't be bothered by anyone, but Sango had practically thrown the poor boy down the hall, saying how was Kagome going to have any independence with him always there to chase off her problems. Though irritated that Kagome couldn't speak for herself, she didn't mind. Over protectiveness was one way to end a relationship. She kept her head down, not in shame, but in detest at her fellow students. Whispers could be heard all down the hall if she past by, and many fingers pointed. It looked like they were blaming her, like she was the fault. But why? She was the one attacked, so why weren't they talking about Hojo? Kagome was getting really riled, and about to yell down the hall `what the hell are you looking at?', when someone called her name.

"Kagome!" Miru raised her hand to be seen and Kagome smiled with warmth. At least someone talked to her. Miru caught up with them with a couple of other girls.

"Hey Miru," Sango said, "What's up?"

"We just wanted to say, Kagome, we are so sorry this happened. I mean, who could have imagined?"

"Yeah I know," the girl to her right piped up, " and to think, I was beginning to like that guy!"

"Miserable creep," the left girl pounded a fist in her hand, "he ever shows his damn face here again, I'll put him into a coma."

Kagome's smile broadened, "thanks for the support you guys, you're the only ones who have actually talked to me yet."

"Oh no problem," Miru laughed, "Us girls have got to stick together."

"Yeah," the right slung her arm over Miru, and the other following suit, "its all about girl power!"

Kagome and Sango walked with the silly girls to lunch, laughing at their antics and proclamations. She guessed it was because she was laughing that caused the other students to relax, since they started coming up to her to talk or say hello. They walked into the cafeteria, and the noise went down a notch. Kagome looked around nervous, but continued on her way, ignoring the stares she got. Many people stopped her, mostly girls, to comment and comfort her. `When is it going to stop?'

The girls left them and Sango and Kagome found the boys in a corner table. They sat down and Kagome gave Inuyasha a reassuring smile.

"So, how was your day?" he asked.

"Okay, besides the stares I ignored. But nothing eventful."

"You should have been here earlier," Miroku grinned, "when Kouga walked in, people started cheering. The boy was as red as a fire engine by the time he sat down."

Sango giggled slightly, and Kagome smiled. Miroku looked up, "and speak of the devil!"

"Don't you mean demon?" Kouga growled. They turned and saw Kouga walk up to them, hands in his jeans. He gave Kagome a nervous smile and a nod to Inuyasha. "Hey Kagome, how ya doing?"

"I'm just fine, you?"

He shrugged, "okay I guess. All the publicity really isn't my style."

Kagome laughed, "Yeah, I know what you mean. You want to sit with us? That is if it's okay with Inuyasha…" Kagome looked to her boyfriend, who gave a noncommittal shrug.

"feh, whatever he wants."

Kouga gave him a scowl, but not a dark one. He turned back to Kagome, "nah, I already got a seat with Ayame."

Sango raised a brow, "you mean the girl who works with you?"

Kouga grinned and turned, "yup, we're going steady now. Cya guys later."

He waved and they waved back. Kagome and Sango gave each other a smug grin.

"Gee, what a surprise," Sango drawled. Kagome giggled.

But they stopped when they heard Inuyasha growl deeply.

"Well, well, Higurashi, I heard what happened," Kagome stiffened and turned to a perfectly composed Kikyou. A few of her flunkies were behind her, only a couple of them glancing nervously at Inuyasha. But Kikyou only looked at Kagome, her cold amused eyes boring holes into her. Her face turned to a sad pout, "and I must say, I'm shocked. Its really sad for something like this to happen."

Kagome let out her breath some. Maybe, just maybe, Kikyou was planning to say something nice. But, nice was never Kikyou's strong point.

Her pout turned into a smirk, "yeah, its pretty sad that you have to have a guy to almost rape you to be considered seriously."

The group gasped, as well as some of Kikyou's flunkies, and Inuyasha growled deeper. Kikyou gave him a cold glare before turning back to her prey, "if you ask me, its pathetic. I mean, come on, how far do you have to go to have a guy to actually want you? Is it really that hard?"

Her followers back away, uncertain. Inuyasha snarled and slammed his fist on the table, causing minute cracks. Miroku jumped up and held him back. The noise caused heads to turn, attention focused on them.

"Could you be any more desperate? What, is Inuyasha not doing the trick? Is he not getting you off anymore that you have to have a guy scare before you do him?" Kikyou leaned down to eye level with a very shocked and angry Kagome, "well? Do you? Did you like that Hojo kid touching you roughly and threatening you to shut up? I heard you called for help after Kouga walked in, not one peep before. Were you afraid Inuyasha would dump you because you didn't tell him you liked it rough?"

"You stupid bitch, if you don't shut up-" Sango headed for the girl, but Miroku grabbed her wrist in time, causing her to thrash against his grip. No one talks to her friend like that!

Kouga was making a beeline for them, a deadly glare in Kikyou's direction. But there was no need. Since every one seemed to be in shock, and no one was holding her down…

Kagome snarled and lunged at her. Kikyou's eyes went wide, she shrieked, and she fell back. Kagome pinned her to the floor and starting pulling her hair, the tall tell signs of a catfight. She started slapping her, seething to the brim.

"YOU FUCKING WHORE! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? HOW DARE YOU SAY THOSE THINGS!" Kagome bitch slapped her a few times, and switched to a better weapon. Her fist.

It was an understatement to say the rest of them were shocked. They were fucking dumbfounded. Sango stopped thrashing, and Inuyasha stopped trying to get to Kagome. They watched for a second as Kagome kicked some serious Kikyou ass! Kikyou was such a pussy she didn't fight back and tried to cover herself. Inuyasha snapped out of it when he heard Kagome's fist connected with Kikyou's nose, a sickening crack echoing. He gasped, and quickly swept Kagome under her arms before she could do more damage and risk bone fragments from entering Kikyou's brain. Kagome thrashed and struggled violently, her eyes never leaving the form of Kikyou struggling o get up.

"YOU STUPID FUCKING CUNT! I'LL KILL YOU FOR SAYING THAT! LET ME GO!" her nails bit into Inuyasha's arm, but he paid no heed. He could smell the saltiness for her bitter tears.

Kikyou stood on her feet, and gave Kagome a withering stare, making Kagome struggle even more. She pulled a tissue from her pocket and plugged her throbbing nose. Kagome stopped and panted in the hanyou's arms, her eyes snapping with hate as she snarled her lip at Kikyou. Her eyes brimmed with tears again, but they didn't fall.

"This isn't over," Kikyou hissed. The crowd made way for her as she stomped out of the cafeteria, cursing under her breath. Not even her flunkies followed her.
