Luck of the Draw

“Oh, yes, it came on quite suddenly this morning.” Kagome's grandfather lied to the voice on the other end of the phone.
He had meant to call the school that morning, but had become distracted not long after his daughter had left for work.
“I bet the local medical school would love to get hold of your granddaughter.” The school secretary offered with a smile in her voice. “What is it this time?”
“I assure you, it is nothing too serious, uh…um…” his hand dove into the small candy dish on the phone table. Coughing to cover the silence, he dug his fingers through the tiny slips of paper in the bowl before selecting one.
“Ecthyma. Yes, that's it. Quite bad. Probably have to stay home for a couple weeks at least. Souta will be by to pick up her assignments.”
The school secretary fell silent.
“Yes, um, thank you for calling. Bye.” Hurriedly he hung up the phone; best not to let her ask questions.
Taking one last look at the word on the slip of paper in his hand, he dropped it back into the dish to await its turn to be pulled again.
