Drowning
___________________
He wasn’t aware of it at first. Then it hit him. He didn’t known what compelled him, what drew him near the well. At first, he had been running as fast as he could to escape her haunting face and that voice in the back of his head. The voice that had him snarling in anger and guilt. It didn’t matter where he was running towards, just as long he kept running, tried to ignore that nagging voice, to forget just for a moment about her pain that he caused. No matter how fast he ran, he wouldn’t be able to forget or ignore, and yet, he still ran. Somehow, the feeling of the world rushing past him, the feel of the wind hitting his face, caressing him, was always comforting.
‘Go back, Inu Yasha. She’s waiting for you.’ The voice that he had desperately tried to ignore continued to relentlessly persuade him to fetch Kagome, to bring her back…
‘She’s fucking scared of me.’ He willed himself to run faster. ‘Why the fuck am I even talking back to you? Dammit, just shut up.’
‘You know I can’t just shut up… you should also know that Kagome has always been there for you… why haven’t you been there for her? It ain’t that she’s scared of you. She’s scared of what you’re going to do.’
‘Keh. Just what the fuck am I going to…’ He stopped his thoughts and grimaced. ‘I don’t have a fucking choice. I have---’
‘Honor to keep that promise to Kikyo? You’ve said that shit already. About that honor… what about the promises you made to her? What about that, baka?’
‘Why the fuck does this even matter to you?’ Growing more irritated by the obstinate voice, he scowled as he hopped from branch to branch, not bothering to watch where he was going. He was simply running blind with eyes open.
‘Because I like her. Dammit… you screw everything up and you don’t even attempt to make it right.’
‘Not like I can make it right.’
‘If you hadn’t noticed, she was crying because she didn’t want you to go… I’m repeating myself. You just don’t listen.’ The voice began to sound just as irritated as he was feeling.
‘Will you shut the fu--- ’
‘She’s waiting for you, Inu Yasha. She still believes you’ll protect her.’
“Dammit…” Inu Yasha growled as the sudden urge to just ram his head against the closest tree, in attempt to quell the voice, had felt so tempting. It didn’t matter if he knocked himself out, just as long as the voice stopped.
For a moment, the voice had stopped talking, and everything just seemed dead quiet. Loneliness came in agonizing waves at the sudden emptiness he felt. Finally coming to a halt, his eyes widened and he slapped a hand over his head. The voice that had quieted for a moment chuckled.
‘You want to bring her back.’
Inu Yasha lowered his gaze to the well. From where he was standing on the branches, he had noticed that where he had landed was the exact same spot he had always waited impatiently for her to come back during the time they had been shard hunting. Ignoring the voice that had protested when he abruptly turned around to run back into the forest, he took a step forward.
His breath caught in his throat.
It had been her scent to stop him dead in his tracks, her small sounds of struggle to climb up the well that had confirmed that she was indeed there. Either that or he was hallucinating and delusional. He watched from his perch as a small pale hand grasped onto the lip of the well.
For an instance, the girl hadn’t noticed him. Inu Yasha, on the other hand, had begun to think he was going mad, loosing his mind to the woman he had so desperately wanted to hold in his arms and to find comfort in. He stared dumbstruck as the girl finally spotted him, locked eyes with him. Chocolate collided with amber and both held their breaths.
“Inu… yasha…” Kagome whispered as she stared at the hanyou from her spot in the well.
He stared at her as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing, and for some odd reason, that had hurt her.
“I came back.” She said softly, knowing he would hear her. She watched as he dropped to the ground, walking towards her in a fast pace that soon turned into a run. She gave a small gasp when she was crushed against a warm, solid chest, the feel of strong arms wrapped around her in a tight embrace and the sound of his heartbeat made her smile watery.
“I thought you wouldn’t come back…” He had mumbled against her hair.
“I’ll always come back.” She replied, her nose tingling and eyes watering. Quickly rubbing the moisture away from her eyes, she stared up at him and offered a soft smile.
For a fleeting moment, they had just stood there, holding each other. He hadn’t bothered asking her why she had left earlier and he already had an idea why. The moon illuminated a soft, pale glow to her skin in the darkness. Even in the dark the moon lit everything at night just as the sun in the day, and the moment just seemed so special.
“I want to purify the jewel, Inu Yasha.” She stated softly, breaking the comforting silence that had settled in between them.
‘I want to grant your wish and everyone elses.’

For the moment, everything seemed peaceful. Not wanting to return to the village so quickly, the both of them had lingered near the forest, quietly appreciating the beauty and the presence of each other. She felt safe with him, and even though there was some sort of feeling tormenting her, telling her that she would get hurt, she stayed close to him. She believed in him. Her small hands smoothened against his, and he offered her a faint smile as he leaned against her.
‘So… you did miss her? You’re acting like a pup.’
Ignoring the voice again, he focused on the girl against him, her small form cuddled so closely against him. Just with her presence, she changed him, stirred something in him that made him want more. He hadn’t wanted to question her, not at a moment so peaceful, not when she had just returned to him.
‘So you’re going to ignore me, eh?’
‘Damn straight I am. Do me at least one fucking favor and shut the hell up for the rest of my life.’
‘No can do. That’s a pretty long time to keep quiet anyways.’
He refused to continue his metal argument and settled on the girl and her soft breathing. She had fallen asleep. He stared at her in awe. She completed him, accepted him, could utterly destroy him and rebuild him. She was so fragile and yet, she was so strong. Why she had continued to return had befuddled him to no end, and still, it also amazed him, made him love her.
‘I love her.’
He sighed and brushed a strand of her silken hair away from her face. She heaved a sigh softly and snuggled more firmly against his chest as she sought out more of his heat. The girl was more than an enigma, she was a paradox to him that made him want to believe, made him want something unreachable and she made it possible.
And yet, everything was so complex.
He hadn’t slept, his inner turmoil about her and the position he was in rendered him sleepless. Leaning against the tree, he dug his toes into the branch he was against. Kagome gave a protesting grumble as he adjusted his form, slightly moving her.
He smiled lopsidedly when the girl lifted her face up from his chest and gave him a disgruntled look.
“Stop moving.” She complained as she dropped her face against him again, a faint snore sounding that she was asleep once more.
Combing his fingers through her hair, his grip on her waist slightly tightened. He watched as light descended across the forest, the warm rays bringing everything to life, stirring nature and life itself. Heaving a breath, he watched sunrise settle, the heat caressing the girl in his arms and rousing her awake once more.
“Morning.” She mumbled against him, craning her neck to look up at him and beamed up at him. Curling and unfurling her fingers as she drew her shoulders up in a small stretch, she yawned and rested the side of her head against him.
“I’m sorry I left yesterday.” She said as her fingers curled around his haori and she clutched on to him. He hadn’t replied, but simply brushed her cheek as a reassuring gesture. He heard her soft sigh and she moved a bit. He stilled her and frowned.
“You’re gonna fall off.” He warned when she tried to sit up.
“And you’re gonna catch me.” She replied with a bright smile. She baffled and amazed him. She was always unusually buoyant, even after how she had acted the other day. Her smile could make him do things, change him, destroy him.
“Keh.” He snorted as he wrapped his arms around her again, flipping both of them over and falling off of the branch. Smashing his furry ears against his skull when she had squealed in surprised, he smiled as she clung to him.
‘I want you to be with me…’ He frowned inwardly. Why he had felt so selfish at that moment was odd.
‘Because you know she can’t… or, well, you can’t for the matter.’
“We should get back.” She remarked as she picked up her yellow backpack and thrown it over her shoulders. She smiled when he reached his hand out and motioned for her to hand over the bag.
‘Some things never change.’
‘And some do.’ The other voice that had pleaded for her to stay before she had entered the well was back.
‘You know what’s gonna happen, Kagome. You know it’s inevitable.’
‘As you said, some things change… he’s definitely changed… just, please, be quiet.’
To her surprise, the voice did cease to stop.

Sango snorted as the monk pulled at the string again and attempted to make the top whirl longer than Shippo’s.
“I swear… he’s cheating.” Miroku accused as the top lost balance and rolled away.
“Stop being such a sore loser, he won.” The taiyaji replied as she handed the child the last box of pocky.
Miroku frowned and slouched as he watched the kitsune’s smile widen and grab the treat excitedly.
“Stop sulking.” Sango scolded and Kirara mewled playfully as she snagged one of her claws into his robe.
“I’m not sulking, my lovely Sango. I’m simply watching him eat the pocky with a sad, sad look.” He remarked as he turned his gaze to her, smiling brightly.
“Stop staring at me like that.” She narrowed her eyes. “You’re looking at me like I’m a box of pocky.”
“You know… I’ve lost all interest in that box of pocky…” He started, slightly moving closer to her, dragging the cat youkai, who had tangled herself, along. “Hasn’t it been a while since we’ve hugged or spent time alone, my love?”
“For the love of…”
“Come to my bosom!” Miroku beamed as he opened his arms and waited, only to be rewarded with the top hitting his head as she grabbed the top Shippo had been playing with to chuck at him too.
“Baka.” Shippo snorted as he stuffed the chocolate covered stick into his mouth.
Sango had halted in her assault as well as Miroku when Kagome had entered the small hut. Shippo had dropped the box of pocky and squealed as he launched himself towards her.
“Kagome!” He cried out, “The baka finally did something right! I missed you!”
Kagome giggled as the child ranted about Inu Yasha and how he missed her and asked especially about the treats she had brought for him.
“Have you behaved yourself?” she asked teasingly as she held the kitsune. He nodded his head vigorously and smiled.
“Well then, I guess you can have the pocky I brought…” The kitsune squealed at her feigned reluctance and hopped off when Inu Yasha entered with the yellow pack.
“Oi, runt, get off.” The hanyou gruffly ordered.
“Kagome said I could get the pocky.” He argued with a frown.
“Keh.”
Kagome giggled and placed her attention on the other male and female. Sango gave her a welcoming smile and hugged her.
“Kagome, did you go home yesterday?” Sango questioned, missing the look that Inu Yasha sent her.
Kagome slightly nodded and waited for the other question. Obviously, the other girl hadn’t been informed about what happened the other day.
“Why?”
Inu Yasha rubbed the bridge of his nose between his thumb and middle finger as he sent a calculating stare at Miroku, who in turn, shrugged.
“I guess I forgot something and just needed to repack again.” She lied, smiling nervously.
Miroku gave her a grin as he opened his arms.
“I don’t think so, pervert.” Inu Yasha growled as he came in between her and the monk.
“I’m hurt, Inu Yasha!” Miroku whined, “I simply wish to welcome her back.”
“Keh! A hand on her ass isn’t very welcoming.”
“To me it is…” he muttered and quickly coughed, “That was not my intention.”
Sango gave a disgusted snort and folded her arms across her chest.
Kagome smiled and fingered the jewel that had been place around her neck.
“I want to purify the jewel and try to make a wish.”
All eyes turned on her and an uncomfortable silence settled.
“Kagome-sama… have you considered that the well might…close?” Miroku questioned.
She nodded, her smile never faltering, but inside…
‘You didn’t think this over… what will you do when he’s gone, Kagome? Stay here?’ The voice returned and she cringed inwardly.
The voice was right. What would she do when the well closed?
