Kagome followed the youkai servant around the palace, very afraid that she would get lost. The place was one big maze, so many confusing twists and turns. Following closely, Kagome could see all of the youkai's wonderful features. Her short lavender hair curled around her face, deep cobalt eyes staring straight ahead. Like Sesshomaru, she too had a few markings adorning her face. At the bottom-inside corner of each eye were blue specks, much like tear drops. Between her eyebrows and running to the bridge of her nose was a deep pink `v'. Suddenly, the servant turned around, probably wondering why she was being stared at.
“Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to stare. It's just, well, I think you're very pretty.”
The servant youkai blushed slightly and stopped walking.
“Thank you, miss. Young Rin said the same thing when she first arrived here. My name is Sephira, by the way. And you are the miko, Kagome, am I correct?”
Kagome nodded. “Yes. Sephira, may I ask you something?”
“Sure. Go right ahead.”
“You and the other youkai, you're all servants here. I know he's your ruler and everything, but isn't there a better life out there for you, besides constantly waiting on Sesshomaru?”
“This is where you are mistaken, Miss Kagome. The youkai who live here, we serve Lord Sesshomaru by choice. When our homes were taken by other youkai and by the humans, it was Lord Sesshomaru who offered us a place to live. We repay his generosity by serving him. So, you see, it is out of kindness and respect that we serve him, not by fear.”
Kagome was somewhat shocked. Sesshomaru had offered his home to these abandoned youkai without even knowing who they were. Was this truly the same dog demon that was constantly trying to steal the Tetsuiga? Still baffled, she continued following Sephira through the corridors until finally stopping at a particular door.
“Here is where you'll be staying this evening. There is a door inside which leads to an indoor bath where you may freshen up. I will come and fetch you when dinner is ready.”
Sephira opened the door for her and began to walk away, but not before adding, “Oh, and in case you were wondering, the indoor bath happens to connect directly to Lord Sesshomaru's room.”
Kagome was inside the room now, marveling at how large it was. There was a very comfortable looking bed, a handmade oak dresser, and a full length floor mirror. It seemed like a page right out of a fairytale. As she was about to enter the bath, she remembered what Sephira had said and knocked quietly. Hearing no response, she entered and began a long-awaited bath.
Just as she was drying off, Kagome heard a knock on the door leading into her room.
“Miss Kagome, are you decent?”
It was Sephira, most likely coming to inform her of dinner. She glanced down at the towel wrapped around her before answering.
“Yes. Did you wish to come in?”
“No, Miss. I merely wish to tell you that dinner will be served shortly. Do you need to use the bedroom to change? If so, I shall wait outside.”
“It's fine, Sephira. I have an outfit in here I can wear.”
“Are you sure? Lord Sesshomaru has stocked your dresser with some lovely yukatas and I'm sure they'd be much more comfortable.”
Kagome pondered this for a moment. It would be nice to wear something aside from her school uniform for a change.
“On second thought, I think I will need to change in the other room after all. Are you sure you don't mind waiting outside?”
“No trouble at all, Miss Kagome. I will be just outside the door, waiting to escort you to dinner.”
As she heard the outer door close, Kagome entered the bedroom and opened one of the dresser drawers.
“Sephira was right, these yukatas are beautiful.”
Kagome picked up the first one she saw, a lovely midnight blue yukata with a yellow obi. She quickly changed into her new outfit and admired herself in the mirror. She smiled, amazed at how great the yukata looked on her, not to mention how well it fit. Knowing she could do nothing else to improve her look, Kagome opened the door and followed Sephira down to dinner.
