Chapter 7: Imposter!

"Help me…" Sango whispered, but noticed nobody had heard her. She then decided to get the youkai lord back into his chambers on her own. She lifted the youkai and draped one of his arms around her shoulder, and placing an arm around his waist. 'At least he's lighter than Hiraikotsu,' Sango thought to herself. She had almost made it half way back to the castle before she noticed somebody standing in front of her. "Move," was all that she said.

"I will not move," Miroku replied calmly, looking at her. "Let me help," he said to her.

"What?" she asked, not sure if she heard right.

"I asked you to let me help," Miroku said again, but Sango caught the tone in his voice.

"You don't want to help him," she replied lightly, and shifted Sesshoumaru's weight. Miroku sighed, and stepped out of her way. He knew he couldn't win this battle. 'She's right, I don't care about him, I just wanted to help her, to make her see that I do care…about her…' he thought to himself.

Sango trudged back up to the castle, and almost got in the doors when Sesshoumaru stirred. "What…?" he asked her weakly.

"I'm taking you to your chambers," Sango told him lightly.

"Do you know where they are?" he asked her, his voice fading in and out.

"Um…" Sango just then realized that she did not know where his chambers were.

"Where is Rin? She can show you," he told her, his voice trailing off. As if on cue, Rin and Kagura were running up behind Sango and the limp Sesshoumaru.

"Sesshoumaru-sama!" Rin cried out, when she saw his head loll to the side.

"He'll be fine, Rin," Sango said reassuringly. "But I must take him to his chambers. Can you show me where they're at?"

"Hai!" Rin said, and ran towards the castle.

"Rin! Not so fast!" Sango panted, trying to keep up with the girl.

"Gomen, Sango-chan," Rin said, and slowed down. Kagura looked at Sango, then the unconscious Sesshoumaru.

"Do you want any help carrying him up there?" Kagura asked.

"No, I can do it," Sango said, a determined look on her face.

"You really must be the kindest person I have met," Kagura told her before walking towards their own chambers. 'What did that mean?' Sango wondered, but then remembered the task at hand, and decided she would ask Kagura what she meant later.

"This is it!" Rin said, pointing at a pair of large doors.

"Arigato," Sango said, and headed into the room. Once she entered, she walked straight over to the bed, and laid Sesshoumaru down on it. 'Should I dress his wounds, or wait for the servants to do it?' she wondered to herself. 'Maybe nobody will really need to do it, he is youkai, after all,' she thought. After a few minutes of contemplating what she would do, she decided to dress the wounds herself. She slowly took off Sesshoumaru's armor, and then his shirt. She was fearing that at any moment he would wake up, and then kill her for doing this. 'What does it matter if I die?' she asked herself. "At least all of this pain would be gone," she murmured to herself. Sango jumped when she felt a hand rest on hers, which was currently on Sesshoumaru's bare chest.

"What are you doing?" he growled slightly.

"I'm sorry!" she said softly, turning away to try and hide her blush. She knew that was going to happen. It was like some sort of unwritten law.

"You did not answer my question, wench," he said to her, but to her surprise, his voice was not harsh, but emotionless. 'Did I expect anything else from him?' she asked herself.

"I was going to dress your wounds," she replied sheepishly.

"Why?" he asked, curiosity filling his voice.

"Because…because…" Sango wasn't sure why she was doing this. 'Why am I doing this…do I…no, I love Miroku…don't I?' she asked herself. 'Oh, Gods! What am I saying?! I don't have feelings for Sesshoumaru…right?' she was beginning to be unsure of herself.

"Because?" he asked her gently. 'Why am I being so nice to her? If it had been anybody else, I would have ripped their head off, and tore them limb from limb. But this girl…her touch…her scent…everything about her…' he let his thoughts fade. 'But she is human,' he thought with darkness.

"I…er…I felt like I owed it to you," she said, hoping he would buy that, and let her leave in one piece.

"Why would you owe me?" he asked her, letting his curiosity get the better of him.

"You…you helped me…and Kagura…and…" she had to stop herself before she said anything that she would regret.

"Fine. But I do not need your help. Now leave," he told her, a firmness in his voice.

"Hai, Sesshoumaru-sama," she replied, leaving the room. Her pace picked up from a walk to a full out sprint as she made her way to her room. Once she entered the room, Kagura stood up, and noticed the tears in Sango's eyes.

"What is wrong?!" Kagura asked, immediately rushing to Sango's side.

"I don't…I don't know," Sango replied truthfully. 'Why am I crying? This makes no sense,' she thought to herself. She then felt Kirara curl around her ankles, so she picked up the cat, and sat on the bed, placing Kirara on her lap. Kagura sat next to her, not sure how to comfort the girl. 'Humans are so complicated…' Kagura mused.

"Kikyou, are you okay?" Inuyasha asked the miko. The group had not left the clearing yet, due to the fact that Kikyou appeared to need help. Kikyou nodded at Inuyasha, but then fell into his arms, her knees growing weak.

Kagome sighed at the sight, and turned to walk away, but paused only to tell Miroku and Shippou she could not watch what was happening. "I can't just stand here and watch this," she told them, letting a solitary tear slide down her cheek. Shippou was about to protest when Miroku picked the kitsune pup up, and shook his head.

"This is hard on her," Miroku explained.

"I want to comfort her!" Shippou said, and with that, he pushed away from Miroku, and headed towards Kagome. Miroku watched the pup run off, and then turned his attention back to Kikyou and Inuyasha. 'There is not point for me to be here by myself…Inuyasha will probably kill me if he sees me here still,' Miroku thought, and turned away. He sat at the stump of a tree not too far away, and started to meditate.

"Kikyou…" Inuyasha said, looking down at the woman.

"Inuyasha, leave me," Kikyou snarled.

"Why?" Inuyasha asked. To his surprise, her words had not even stung him, and he almost wanted to leave her.

"I do not love you, Inuyasha! I despise you! I despise all youkai!" Kikyou glared at him. Inuyasha looked into her eyes, but did not feel anything towards the walking corpse, except for pity.

"Kikyou…" he said, a firmness in his voice. She looked up at him, wondering what he would say. "I have decided that…that…I'm not going to hell with you," he told her firmly.

"What? You owe me!" she yelled at him.

"I owe you nothing, just to avenge you by killing Naraku," he told her, turning to walk away.

"Wait! Inuyasha!" Kikyou began to cry.

"What? Now you want me, a worthless Hanyou, around?" he asked her, anger in his voice.

"That's not what I meant…" Kikyou pleaded.

"Yes it is…it's exactly what you meant. You do not love me anymore, and I have realized, I do not love you," he told her calmly, not turning around.

"You're leaving me for my reincarnation?" Kikyou asked, trying to cover up her emotions.

"So what if I am?" Inuyasha snarled. He then stormed off, not wanting to think about Kikyou anymore.

"I never knew it would hurt so much…hearing that he doesn't love me…" Kikyou said, as she sat on the ground and cried.

"Where is Inuyasha?" Shippou asked Miroku. The other three had returned to their camp, and were starting a fire, and preparing dinner.

"I do not know, all I know is that when I left, he was talking to Lady Kikyou, but his words towards her were different.

"So you were spying on them?" Kagome asked accusingly.

"Well…" Miroku began.

"That was why you chose that tree to sit under, and 'meditate'?" Kagome smiled at him.

"Hai, Kagome-chan," Miroku replied sheepishly.

"I'm glad," Kagome said, and gave him a quick hug.

"Kagome, can I help?" Shippou begged.

"Sure, you can go get some water!" Kagome said, smiling at the pup.

"Yay!" Shippou said, and ran towards the spring. As he was making his way towards the tree, he noticed a different smell in the air, and decided to follow the scent. He peered around the bush, and saw Sesshoumaru hunting. 'Perfect,' Shippou thought to himself.

"Hey, where's the twerp?" Inuyasha asked, entering the camp.

"He went to get some water," Kagome said, smiling slightly at Inuyasha.

"Kagome, can I talk to you? Alone?" he asked her.

"Of course, Inuyasha," she said. 'I hope he's not going to tell me that he has chosen Kikyou over me…' she thought to herself. Once they were away from Miroku, Inuyasha sat on the ground, and patted on the ground next to him, signaling Kagome to sit as well. "What is it?" she asked him, making herself comfortable.

"Kagome, I'm sorry," he said, looking down at the dirt.

"What for?!" Kagome asked, feeling utterly shocked. 'He never apologizes!' she thought in awe.

"For everything I put you through," he told her. "I wouldn't be surprised if you hate me now," he told her.

"How can you be so stupid?!" she yelled at him. The extreme loudness of her voice made Inuyasha flatten his ears, so as to block out the scream. "I'm sorry," she said softly, "but I do not hate you, Inuyasha. I feel many things towards you, but never hate," she told him, putting a reassuring hand on his.

"But I'm just a worthless hanyou," Inuyasha told her. Kagome smiled, and lifted his chin, so he could see her smile. When she lifted his chin, she noticed tears running down his cheek.

"Inuyasha! What's wrong?" she asked, her smile leaving her face, and concern filling her heart.

"I don't want to hurt you…and I don't want to be betrayed again," Inuyasha told her, averting his eyes.

"Oh, Inuyasha! I would never betray you!" she told him, pulling him into a hug. 'He's…crying? He never cries…' she thought to herself.

"Won't you?" he asked softly. She was rather shocked by his words, but he continued. "Everybody else in my life has…my father, my brother, Kikyou…everybody I've ever cared about," he said, almost sobbing, but willing to control himself.

"Have I betrayed you yet?" she asked gently. She felt him wrap his arms around her waist, and tighten the embrace. "Neither has Miroku, Sango, or Shippou," she added.

"Sango has…she left us…for my brother," Inuyasha said, tensing a little.

"She still loves us, I know it. She just needs time to think everything over. I think we were too hasty to jump to conclusions about Kagura, and your brother. She seems to care for them both almost as deeply as she cares about us," Kagome told him. Inuyasha looked up into her eyes, and saw that she looked happy for her friend.

"What about me…" he thought, but unfortunately, he said his thoughts out loud.

"What about you?" she asked, looking confused.

"I have hurt you so many times," he told her, looking at the ground feeling ashamed.

"And yet, I always came back to you," she told him, with a soft smile. "Why do you think that is?" she asked him lightly.

"I…um…" was all he could say. Kagome just smiled at him.

"We have to get back to camp," she said, and stood up to leave, but not before Inuyasha grabbed her wrist. She looked startled at first, and then realized that he had entwined his fingers in hers, and brought her close to his body. He pulled his other hand gently through her hair, like a brush. Kagome couldn't help but blush at their closeness. Then it happened. He leaned in slowly and kissed her gently, his lips brushing her own. She was so startled, she didn't react at first, and he started to pull away.

"Gomen, Kagome," he said, blushing slightly.

"Don't be," Kagome told him, and she pulled his body towards her, and kissed him back.

"Kagura, it has been nearly two days since Sesshoumaru has left," Sango stated.

"I know. I wonder where he is," Kagura said. As if on cue, Sesshoumaru walked into the door, and looked at the two women.

"I have returned, and I have brought food," Sesshoumaru told them calmly.

"Hai, Sesshoumaru-sama," Sango said. "Is your wound healed?" she asked him.

"I do not see how that is your business, wench," Sesshoumaru replied, and left the room.

"When did he become so rude?" Sango asked Kagura.

"I don't know…" Kagura replied. From the next room, they heard a scream, and Rin came running into their room, jumping into Sango's arms, and pressing her face into the older girl's chest, trying to hide from something.

"What is wrong, Rin?" Sango asked.

"Sesshoumaru-sama…he's different!" the girl sobbed.

"Give me the girl," Sesshoumaru told Sango, as he entered their room again.

"And if I don't?" Sango inquired. To answer her question, Sesshoumaru raised his hand, and slashed through Sango's left cheek.

"That's what happens when people disobey me," Sesshoumaru growled.

"Is it?" Sango asked defiantly.

"You want more?" he snarled.

"No," she replied calmly.

"Leave. Leave my home now. Kagura and Rin will stay, but you will leave, NOW!" Sesshoumaru shouted at her. With that, Sango left the room, enraged, and did not even notice anything odd about the slash through her cheek…

"I don't want to stay if Sango isn't here…" Kagura said quietly.

"Shut up! She's a taiji. She'll just end up killing us all…you cannot trust her," Sesshoumaru replied. Kagura didn't like the answer, and was attempting to go after Sango, but she felt something hit her, and she blacked out.

"Sess…Sesshoumaru-sama?" Rin asked the man in front of her, tears running down her face from fear.

"Wrong!" the man shouted, and shifted to another recognizable form…
