Chapter 8: Yet Another Friend!
Sango was walking along a trail, trying hard not to cry. She had slung Hiraikotsu over her back, and Kirara (untransformed) was running behind Sango's hurried steps. 'Why? Why had he said that to me?' Sango thought to herself. She was so busy thinking about what Sesshoumaru had done and said, that she did not notice the youkai approaching her. 'It hurts so bad! Why does it hurt?' she wondered. "Do I love him?" she asked aloud.
"You should worry more about your head than your heart," a cold voice hissed. Sango immediately turned around, finding herself face to face with an ugly snake looking youkai. It was a venomous green color with bulging yellow eyes. The fangs were almost the size of Hiraikotsu while the rest of the snake was as wide around as a large tree, and over sixty feet long. Sango couldn't help but scream at the sight of the hideous serpent <okay, I hope you get that I'm pretty much saying this serpent looks the same as the basilisk from Harry Potter…just without the killing the person if they look into its eyes ^_^>. Kirara transformed, and stopped for Sango to mount, so they could take down the horrible beast. Sango finally regained her courage and threw Hiraikotsu at the snake, but it clamped its mouth around the weapon, and its venom melting the youkai bone boomerang. Sango had to gasp, this snake was very powerful, and she knew she would not be able to defeat it alone.
"This looks fun," said a cocky voice from behind Sango. She looked back and saw no other than Kouga standing there smirking. He then noticed Kirara and Sango. "Where is Kagome?" he asked, taking his eyes off of the serpent for a minute.
"This isn't the time, Kouga!" Sango yelled, dodging a deadly attack from the snake. Kouga returned his attention to the snake, and attacked.
"Damnit! My claws won't penetrate the skin!" Kouga growled under his breath.
"Disgraceful," the snake hissed at Kouga. "Helping a human?" The last comment pissed Sango off, and she took a dagger out from a small pack she carried with her, and urged Kirara to go towards the snake's eyes. In one fluid movement, Sango slashed at the beast, blinding it while the blood came gushing down. "BITCH!" the youkai hissed, and attempted to attack Sango and let her feel his poison, but Kouga was too fast for the ugly serpent and slashed the snake's unprotected throat just as it was about to clamp down on Sango's arm. The snake fell over backwards, and then turned to dust, revealing a shard of the Shikon no Tama.
"It was pretty weak for having a jewel shard," Kouga thought aloud.
"Hai," Sango replied. "Thank you, Kouga-kun," Sango said, giving him a small smile. "If you hadn't shown up, I would be dead." Kouga couldn't help but smile.
"Where are your friends?" Kouga asked her.
"Which ones?" Sango laughed a little. She noticed the confused expression on Kouga's face and continued. "I am heading back to find Kagome and Inuyasha," she said softly.
"Would you mind a traveling companion?" Kouga asked her, a kindness in his voice that she never heard before.
"Sure," she replied coolly.
"Then come on," he said, motioning for her to come to the ground so they could walk together. Kirara returned to the ground and transformed into her smaller form as soon as Sango dismounted her. "That was a brilliant idea," Kouga complimented, causing Sango to blush slightly.
"Arigato," she said shyly. They walked in silence for awhile, when Sango finally decided to break the silence. "So, why are you traveling with me, a taiji?"
"You looked lonely," he replied simply. "You almost looked lost and helpless," he added with a smile.
"I am not helpless!" she said exasperated and playfully punching his arm. With this, they began to talk about many pointless things, such as weather, different types of youkai, etc. when the subject landed on a sensitive matter for Sango.
"So why do you travel with Mutt-face? Don't you have a family or anything?" he asked, not knowing anything of her past.
"Well…Naraku tricked me. And I travel with them because they helped me out in my time of greatest need," she said slowly, not really wanting to explain, but knowing she would have to.
"What do you mean?" Kouga asked, his eyes gently gazing into her own. 'How can I resist those eyes? I know it's true, but saying it to somebody I don't know that well…' she thought to herself. 'I'll tell him. I trust him,' she concluded.
"The taiji from our village were summoned to protect a wealthy family, and we were deceived by Naraku. Naraku then gained control over my brother, Kohaku, and he killed our father, and the rest of the exterminators there. Finally, he tried to kill me, but I had freed him from Naraku's control. I thought he was dead, and all I wanted was revenge on whoever did this. Naraku told me it was Inuyasha, and like the fool I was, I believed him, and attacked Inuyasha. I had a jewel shard in my back to help my wound, and of course that didn't help. I was under Naraku's control. Inuyasha made me realized my mistake, and I decided to travel with them, and seek revenge on Naraku. Later, I found out that Naraku had used a shard on Kohaku, and erased Kohaku's memory," she stifled a sob before continuing, "now Kohaku is nothing more than an assassin for Naraku, sent to kill us," she ended her story.
"I'm sorry!" Kouga said, pulling Sango into a warm embrace. She felt warm in his arms right then. She felt loved…but not as in a lover…more as in a very good friend. Sango felt the need to cry, and so she did. She let her tears that she held for so long out, and cried on Kouga's shoulder. He rubbed his hand up and down her back, and cooed soothing words into her ear, trying to help her calm down.
"Thank you, Kouga," Sango whispered when she finally regained her composure. He gave her a light squeeze before letting her out of his embrace.
"Hop on," Kouga said, looking at her.
"Hop on?" she repeated, not sure what he was talking about. He softly smiled at her.
"Hai. Hop on my back. We'll get there faster that way," he said to her.
"Oh, okay," she smiled, and did as he instructed. Within minutes they were within a tornado of Kouga's wind, and were on their way to the gang.

'What was I thinking? He kissed me! And then I kissed him back! Oh God! This is going to make it that much harder when he realizes he still loves Kikyou!' Kagome thought in dismay.
"What's wrong, Kagome?" Inuyasha asked her, trying to read her thoughts, but having no luck.
"I just…" she trailed off. A single tear slid down her cheek, and Inuyasha bent down to kiss it away.
"Please don't cry, my love," he said, trying to comfort her.
"Oh Inuyasha! Do you mean it?" she asked, begging for it to be the truth.
"Mean what?" Inuyasha asked her, slightly confused.
"Do you mean that you love me?" she whispered.
"Of course I do!" he said to her, pulling her into a hug. She smiled and returned the hug. She never wanted this sensation to end.
"I love you too," she whispered, only for his ears to hear.
"We need to get back to camp, I left Miroku there all alone," Inuyasha said, slowly standing up, and picking up Kagome bridal style.
"Okay," she replied, and snuggled into his chest. 'Maybe he doesn't love Kikyou anymore,' she thought to herself happily. With that, Inuyasha took to the air, and Kagome soon found sleep take over her. Within minutes they were back at camp, Miroku looking slightly stressed.
"What's wrong, monk?" Inuyasha asked, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"Shippou has not come back yet for one. I thought you two would not come back for two. Sango is gone, and I'm very worried about her…for three," Miroku sighed. Kagome was brought of her light slumber and looked around, finally letting Miroku's words register in her mind.
"Oh Miroku!" she said, almost jumping out of Inuyasha's arms to comfort her friend. "I'm so sorry!" she cried, giving him a hug. Miroku returned the hug, half-heartedly.
"I miss her so much," he whispered. Kagome nodded and walked back over to Inuyasha, allowing him to snake an arm around her waist. "I'm glad to see you two have finally realized your true feelings for each other," he said, trying to break the awkward silence. Before either got to reply, Inuyasha sensed something, and tightened his possessive grip around Kagome.
"There are two jewel shards coming towards us!" Kagome said, preparing for battle. The next thing they knew, an all too familiar whirlwind came towards them.
"Kouga," Inuyasha spat, "what the fuck do you want, wolf-boy?" Kouga glared at Inuyasha, then noticed his possessive, yet intimate hold on Kagome. He let his eyes drop, and stood in silence, before Sango jumped off his back.
"Sango-chan!" Kagome called out, embracing her friend in a hug.
"Why the hell are you traveling with him?" Inuyasha asked bitterly.
"Inuyasha, do you have to disrespect every person that I befriend?" Sango glared at him.
"What?! You're friends with him too?!" Inuyasha yelled.
"So what if I am? I don't see why the hell you're acting like this! I'm sorry if my new friends do not live up to your standards!" she spat at him. 'Why does he always do this? He always pisses me off so much!' Sango thought.
"Sango-sama," Miroku walked up to her, an she lost her train of thought when she saw his face. He looked depressed, and she did not like seeing him like that.
"Houshi-sama," she smiled warmly at him, before turning to Kouga. "I suppose you will be going back to your pack?" she asked him.
"Hai, I have no place here," he said gently, trying not to let his hurt show.
"I will talk to you soon, I hope," she smiled, and gave him a friendly hug. He smiled at her and nodded before retreating.
"Are you staying for long?" Miroku asked Sango, after Kouga was long gone.
"I think I will be," she sighed.
"What the fuck did Sesshoumaru do to you?" Inuyasha asked her, coming closer to her, and noticing the claw marks on her face.
"Um…" Sango did not want to say what happened, because then she would be admitting the truth, and she was not ready for that.
"That couldn't have been from Sesshoumaru," Miroku said, as though lost in thought.
"What do you mean?" Kagome asked him, examining the scratch.
"Well, if it were from Sesshoumaru, then she would have been poisoned, and therefore, would not have gotten this far, even with the help of Kouga," he concluded.
"You're right!" Sango exclaimed, a smile on her face. "It couldn't have been Sesshoumaru-sama! It must have been somebody else…but who?" she pondered at the thought for awhile, before an all too familiar hand found her ass. "Will you never learn?" she growled at the monk.
"I'm sorry, but my hand has missed you," he smiled sheepishly. Sango could not help but smile back at him, even if he was a hentai.
"Hey Sango, what do you say to going to the hot springs?" Kagome asked almost immediately, not wanting Sango to hurt Miroku.
"That sounds good to me," Sango replied, quickly turning to give Miroku a friendly hug. Before she pulled away, she whispered into his ear, "I let that one slide for now, but if you come to the hot springs to spy on us, I will hurt you so bad," causing Miroku to gulp, and smile sheepishly.
