InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Even If You Cannot Hear My Voice ❯ Only the Hanyou can help ( Chapter 12 )

The weather did not reflect the mood of those around Kagome. Birds could be heard chirping merrily in the soft, summer breeze. Koga was sitting outside with his left arm resting on his raised knee. He closed his eyes and sighed and then looked up at the sky. White billowing clouds slowly crossed the brilliant blue horizon. Koga looked into the forest and smirked. It seems the filthy mutt has finally arrived.
Inuyasha leapt through the brush towards the hut. He landed next to Koga and let Kohaku down.
“Took you long enough, you stupid half-breed!” Koga shouted angrily.
Inuyasha snarled at the wolf youkai then turned to the young demon slayer. “Kohaku. Make sure this mangy wolf doesn't go anywhere. I'll have to kill him if Kagome doesn't survive.” And with those quick words he rushed into Kaede's hut.
“Is Kagome-sama going to be all right?” Kohaku asked apprehensively.
“I don't know. Kaede says it's up to her and dog-breath now, but I don't know what the hell that mutt can do to help.”
Koga knew very well what that mutt could and needed to do to help Kagome, and even though the wolf prince had given up on the idea of the young miko loving him instead of the half-breed, he wasn't going to start being nice to the hanyou.
Kohaku thought for a moment before speaking. He knew this wasn't the best time to talk since Kagome could very well be dying within the hut, but he could not contain his curiosity anymore.
“Koga-sama?” Kohaku nervously asked.
“What is it, pup?” Koga knew what was on the young demon slayer's mind. He didn't feel like having a long discussion about anything right now because he wanted to have his ears focused on Kagome's breathing. He had been listening intently to Kagome ever since the moment when Inuyasha placed her into his arms.
“Um…Well…I was just wondering…Uh…”
Koga took his eyes off the sky and looked encouragingly at Kohaku. Kohaku took a deep breath and continued.
“Why…did you save me earlier?” Kohaku glanced quickly at the wolf prince, and then he decided it would be better if he just stared at his feet while waiting for an answer.
“Well, pup…you were once under Naraku's control, and that bastard made you do things that would make anyone want revenge. You were willing to do anything for the chance to kill Naraku, just as I would have done.” He smirked and lightly tapped Kohaku on the shoulder. “Besides. Someone would've had to take the shards from my legs eventually because I sure as Hell wouldn't just give them up without a fight!”
Kohaku smiled. “Heh.”
Kohaku felt satisfied and was grateful that the wolf-demon did not hold a grudge against him. He knew that the best way to repay what everyone had done for him was to help his sister in any way he could as well as the villagers. Kohaku let out a sigh of relief and joined Koga in watching the clouds go by.
Inuyasha fell to his knees beside Kagome.
“KAGOME!!! KAGOME! I'm here!!! Say something!” Tears welled up in Inuyasha's eyes as he possessively held the almost lifeless young girl. When he was given no response, he desperately cried out-
“I DARE YOU TO TELL ME TO SIT!!!!”
A soft gasp was heard and the miko's eyes began to flutter.
“Inu….yasha…” she called out breathily.
“Kagome!!! Are you all right?” He stared fixatedly at Kagome hoping desperately for a response.
“Osu…wari…”
“ACK!!!” Inuyasha yelled as he was pummeled into the floor. “WHAT THE HELL?!” he yelled as he struggled to get up.
“Inuyasha…Kagome is dreaming.” Kaede soothed.
“Dreaming?! DREAMING?!?! Well, why the fuck is she dreaming about sitting me?!?!” the hanyou angrily demanded.
“At least she is sleeping soundly, Inuyasha. It seems that all she needs is to rest, and she'll probably be okay.” Miroku stated wisely.
“Souja! Souja!!!” Shippou chimed in.
“We should be thankful that Kagome is breathing properly again, no matter what she says in her sleep!” Sango said, defending her best friend. “Besides! You TOLD her to do it!”
“WELL I DIDN'T FUCKING MEAN IT!!!” With a final huff, Inuyasha stormed out of the hut and hopped into the trees of his forest.
“It's probably better that Inuyasha left.” Shippou stated plainly. “Kagome usually gets well faster when he's not around anyways.”
“It may appear that way, but ye must realize that Kagome would have indeed been in danger of never again waking if Inuyasha had not come when he did.” Kaede knowingly explained.
“I know…” Shippou sourly admitted. “But that doesn't mean he couldn't be more supportive!” He defiantly complained.
“If I am not mistaken, Inuyasha is probably gathering herbs for me to help ease Kagome's suffering when she awakens.” Kaede felt that the hanyou had been through a lot and deserved a little credit even though he was just as rash and a bit too harsh as always.
“Really?” Shippou asked guiltily.
“Yes, child. Inuyasha gathers many herbs for me and gives them to me when the rest of you are not paying attention.”
“It makes sense, Shippou.” Miroku surmised aloud. “Inuyasha has always put on a rough exterior so we don't realize how sensitive he really is.”
“Yeah…” Sango quietly agreed. “We should take it easy on him when he gets back. It's easy to forget sometimes how much he's affected by what we say.”
“Stupid girl…” Inuyasha grumbled miserably to himself. She almost gets herself killed, and she does it just when Kaede barely has enough herbs to take care of her! Well, I guess I'm just to have to get a bunch of different kinds since there's no telling how she'll feel when she wakes up….Damn it, Kagome….Why did you have to push yourself so hard?
Kagome looked all around her. She was inside a hut of some kind. It seemed familiar to her, but she couldn't place exactly where she was. There was no one around, and she was afraid that something may have happened to her friends. She stood up slowly and tried to remember what had happened. She remembered that she had helped Inuyasha kill Naraku, and then something happened with Kikyo…there was a bright light and then…nothing. Her head started to hurt, and her thoughts were turning fuzzy. Where's Inuyasha? She thought a little disappointed that he wasn't there when she had woken up. Of course, no one else was around either, but the one person she wanted to see more than anyone else was Inuyasha.
“Well, I guess I had better go look for them.” She told herself weakly.
Kagome saw her bow and some arrows in the corner and delicately shouldered what now felt an extremely heavy load. Kagome knew she needed to be careful because everything was still pretty foggy, and she didn't exactly know what was going on. She left the hut and tried to take in her surroundings. It was dismal and grey outside, and a harsh wind was blowing, giving her chills. Something didn't feel right, and it made her worry Inuyasha and the others even more.
“Inuyasha?” She called out feebly. “Where are you?”
Kagome decided to pick a direction and started walking. She figured that Inuyasha could smell her even when she was pretty far away, and she thought that at least this way she might pass by him. At least this is better than lying down in some hut. She rationalized. Maybe I should have stayed put, though. What if everyone went back to that hut and now they're looking for me because I'm not there?
Kagome stopped abruptly and turned around. “I better go back.” She said aloud. But when Kagome started walking, the path had suddenly disappeared and she had walked right off a newly formed cliff.
“AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!” She screamed as she fell fifty feet into the icy waters below. Within the cold depths, Kagome could strangely breathe but she could not swim up to the top. She kicked her legs and struggled as much as she could but it was no use. The water was very black, and the young priestess felt as if she were trapped in a looming shadow. Kagome tried to call out for Inuyasha, but only large bubbles escaped from her mouth. She felt the inky water rush into her lungs causing her to hold her chest in excruciating pain. Kagome knew she couldn't last much longer like this and decided to concentrate. Inuyasha…please…help me….Inuyasha!!!
Inuyasha dropped the herbs he was picking and grabbed his chest. He felt slightly dizzy for a moment before he realized that someone was in pain.
“KAGOME!” he shouted before he sprinted back to Kaede's.
“Kaede!!! Kagome's broken into a cold sweat!!!” Sango shrieked.
“Quickly, Miroku. Find Inuyasha! It seems we were mistaken in thinking his continual presence would not be necessary for Kagome's recovery!”
“Of course, Kaede!” the young monk exclaimed before running out the door.
Koga quickly stood up. “What the hell's wrong with Kagome?!” Koga demanded furiously. “I thought she had gotten better!!!”
“She did. But it seems Inuyasha's continued presence is required for Kagome to recuperate from the tremendous mental and physical exertion she put herself through.” The monk explained. “We must find Inuyasha and bring him back here quickly.”
“LEAVE IT TO ME!” the wolf youkai exclaimed and proceeded to disappear into Inuyasha's forest. Damn that stupid mutt for leaving her when she needed him the most! If Kagome dies, we will definitely fight to the death!
Koga didn't have to run far because a red and white blur rushed past him going towards village.
“Oi!” Koga yelled after the blur, but it seemed that nothing was going to stop it until the blur had reached its intended destination.
“HOLD ON, KAGOME!!!” Inuyasha hollered into the distance. He was focused and determined to reach Kagome in no more than a few minutes. What the fuck is wrong with me?! He mentally berated himself as he often did. Why do I always abandon people when they need me the most?!?!
Kagome felt like weights were slowly attaching themselves to her ankles. Five pounds. Ten pounds. Fifteen pounds. She felt herself being pulled deeper into the black waters, and she still couldn't swim even a few feet closer to the top. Everything started to get even darker around her, and she started to lose hope.
“Inuyasha…” She desperately called out once more.
Suddenly, a clawed hand emerged in the water and grabbed her wrist. The weights felt like they had been ripped off her ankles, and she knew Inuyasha was pulling her out of the wretched blackness.
“I've got you, Kagome. I'll never leave you again.” She heard as she had almost reached the surface.
“Inu…ya…sha?” She weakly questioned as she felt her eyelids become much lighter. She opened her eyes to find that Inuyasha was holding her close to him and running his claws through her hair. She smiled sweetly at him. “Arigato.”
“Kagome!” he cried out enthusiastically and almost smothered the girl as he hugged her tightly.
After Inuyasha had finally relaxed his grip, Kagome was able to look around. She was in Kaede's hut, and all her friends were looking at her with immensely relieved faces.
“KA…GO…MEEEEEEE!” Shippou wailed as he ran to his adopted mother.
“Shippou! It's all right.” Kagome reassured and gave him a faint smile.
“OI, BRAT! Give her some space!” Inuyasha snarled at the young kitsune.
“Look who's talking, you big meanie! You can't keep Kagome all to yourself!” Shippou cried.
“Why you!” Inuyasha growled out threateningly.
“Inuyasha…it's all right.” Kagome told the overprotective hanyou.
Shippou took that opportunity to jump into Kagome's lap. Inuyasha was not thrilled by this, but he still was able to hold Kagome even with the little brat interfering, so he decided to not protest any further for Kagome's sake.
“Kagome-sama! We're so glad you have finally awakened!” Miroku exclaimed.
“We were so worried about you, Kagome!!! How are you feeling?” Sango asked anxiously.
“Well, to tell you the truth, I feel like I've been hit by a train.” The miko answered honestly.
“Ye must be careful not to overexert yourself, Kagome. Inuyasha has gathered enough herbs to help ease your pain for awhile, but there is nothing that will restore the energy ye have lost better than rest.” Kaede advised.
“Okay.” Kagome replied almost imperceptibly. Inuyasha was able to hear her easily enough as well as Shippou since the cub was still snuggled on the miko's lap, but her response was spoken much to softly for anyone else to hear, even Koga who was still listening carefully to all that was being said within the hut.
“All right, Shippou. It's time to get off Kagome now. She needs to rest again.” Inuyasha spoke in an uncharacteristically fatherly voice; he sounded both stern and soothing at the same time.
Shippou gave the hanyou a pouting look, but he did as he was told and scurried over to Miroku's shoulder. Inuyasha placed Kagome softly on the bedroll, and he laid next to the already sleeping girl. This time her dreams were warm and relaxing, and the hanyou watched as the girl he deeply desired to be his mate slept with a soft smile on her delicate lips.
