InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Even If You Cannot Hear My Voice ❯ As we say Good-bye ( Chapter 11 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
“Inuyasha…” called a familiar voice above his head. Inuyasha looked up and saw a ghostly-like Kikyo hovering about ten feet in the air.
“Ki-Kikyo!” he exclaimed brokenly, “I can barely hear her heartbeat!”
“Yes, Inuyasha. She used almost all of her miko power and life energy to save me-“
“LIFE ENERGY!?” he asked terrified. Inuyasha started to feel dizzy. His stomach clenched with horrible pain.
“You must be calm, Inuyasha. Her life can be spared, but you must ask Koga to take her to Kaede immediately.”
“KOGA?!” he questioned angrily as he possessively held Kagome tighter. “FUCK THAT! I'M TAKING HER!”
“Please, Inuyasha. Neither she nor I have much time. You must do this.” Kikyo pleaded urgently.
Inuyasha growled loudly and glared at the wolf demon. He'd be dead if Kagome hadn't healed him, and now all of a sudden he's well enough to take Kagome to Kaede's hut?! The stupid wolf won't be able to make it in time…he tried to convince himself, but when he looked at Kikyo and how she was now, it only felt right to trust her like he had trusted Kagome a few moments ago. He growled out a “fine.” Then he gently placed the unconscious miko into the wolf demon's arms.
“Sango! Miroku! Shippou!” They all looked at their hanyou leader. “Follow this mangy wolf to Kaede's on Kirara!”
Shippou ran over to Inuyasha and gave him the Shikon no Tama he had picked up earlier before hopping onto Kirara's back with the other two.
“If she dies,” he warned the wolf youkai menacingly, “you die.”
“I know.” Koga replied before he took off faster than he ever had even when he possessed the jewel shards that had been previously embedded in his legs.
Sango looked nervously at Kohaku for a second then determinedly shouted, “LET'S GO, KIRARA!” She simply had to believe that Inuyasha would take care of her brother, and when she thought about it for a few seconds while speeding over the forest, she knew he would.
Inuyasha looked worriedly towards the edge of the forest where Koga had disappeared followed by the others with his Kagome when Kikyo interrupted thoughts of the young priestess.
“Inuyasha, I must explain some things to you before I depart and you can join Kagome.”
“Okay.” He said sounding as if it was taking every ounce of his self-control to keep him from rightfully taking Kagome from that mangy wolf back into his arms.
“When I am finished, please tell Kagome and the others what I am about to say.” Kikyo asked politely.
Inuyasha gave a firm nod and glanced towards the forest once more.
When Kikyo was undead, she would have found his distraction annoying and would have hated the fact that she did not possess his rapt attention; however, seeing him look away amused her now, and she smiled sweetly.
“I know you wish to go to her, so I will speak quickly.”
Inuyasha looked at her with a little embarrassment on his face.
“It's all right, Inuyasha. I cannot be jealous of Kagome anymore.”
Inuyasha appeared relieved and a little more relaxed.
“Kohaku-do not leave.” She softly demanded. “I have already said that I wish for everyone to know what I'm going to tell Inuyasha.”
Kohaku was quietly slipping away to give them some privacy, but since Kikyo insisted that he stay, he stood where he was and decided to listen as well.
“Inuyasha. I wish to tell you that I am sorry. I died in bitterness and hatred and could not let go of those feelings when I was resurrected. Tell Kagome I am sorry for everything I did to her. I was intensely jealous of her, and I believed you belonged to me. I hurt her, Inuyasha, more than once.” Kikyo appeared to be sincerely sad as she spoke.
Inuyasha had had his suspicions, but he didn't really have any idea what to do about it, so he just let it go. Kagome had thankfully never spoke ill of Kikyo even after Kikyo had harmed her, and he was immensely grateful for that.
“What is more, what Kagome said about me was right. I allowed Naraku to twist my loneliness into despair and mistrust. We never truly loved each other, Inuyasha.”
Inuyasha looked at Kikyo in shock. He had never expected her to say something like that. “What do you mean by that? I was willing to be human for you?!” he responded incredulously.
“We cared for each other, that is true, Inuyasha. But our union was that of mutual loneliness, nothing more. We were of course attracted to each other because we were much alike in that respect. However, I could not see through Naraku's trick. Also, Tsubaki's curse would have had no effect on me if our love was truly pure, but my powers were weakened, as you know, and it resulted in Kaede losing an eye.”
Inuyasha looked at her with a pained expression. After hearing her words, he knew she was right. He felt in his heart that he cared for Kikyo, but his feelings toward her did not compare to those he felt for Kagome.
“Kagome's true ability is the power to wash away malice and intolerance,” stated Kikyo solemnly. “And that is because she has a pure soul. She alone will be able to purify the Shikon no Tama completely. The demons within the jewel will still be there, but when you make your wish, they will not be able to twist your wish into something unwanted. If you had made your wish when I was alive, Inuyasha, the consequences would have been disastrous for both of us. Have no regrets, Inuyasha, for I do not. If Fate had not intervened, you would have never met your true love. She is my reincarnation, Inuyasha, so my spirit lives on through her. Please do not forget me, Inuyasha, but do not dwell on me, either. Sesshoumaru even knew that it was wrong of me to believe I could drag you to Hell. He warned me more than once that he would stop me from doing so. He does care for you, Inuyasha.”
Inuyasha's eyes bugged out of his head, and he was petrified in disbelief. Sesshoumaru?!?! That fucking bastard doesn't give a shit about anyone!!!
Kikyo smiled at him one last time, knowing his thoughts and knowing he was certainly stubborn on his thoughts about his brother.
As Kikyo began to fade away, Inuyasha smiled at her. He was glad that she was saved, and he now realized that Kagome alone could have made it so.
“Good-bye, Kikyo. I am happy you are finally at peace.”
“Thank you, Inuyasha. Before I go, there is one more thing I must tell you. Kagome's strength comes from her love, nothing more. Her love for the people around her, her love for her friends, and…her love for you.”
“Nani?” Inuyasha asked confused. Kagome doesn't...love me…does she?
Kikyo smiled down at Inuyasha. She knew how hard it was for him to believe that someone could love a hanyou.
“Farewell, Inuyasha,” she said kindly. “It is time for you to go to her. She needs you.” And with those words, all that was left of Kikyo was a small blue orb that shot into the sky.
“Thank you, Kikyo.” He said as he watched her soul leave. He then turned to Sango's little brother. “Kohaku!!! Let's go!” Inuyasha crouched down slightly so Kohaku could get on his back. He wasn't going to leave Kohaku alone, but he sure as hell wasn't going to wait for his puny human legs to get to Kaede's hut, either!
“Hai!” Kohaku promptly jumped onto Inuyasha's back, and Inuyasha took off as a red and white blur.
Kagome was surrounded by her solemn friends and Kaede. Kaede had already done all that she could, and Kagome was unconscious on one of Kaede's bed rolls. Kagome was breathing, but barely. Everyone looked in amazement at the girl when a blue orb shot into her body through her chest. Kagome gasped and started breathing more normally. She was still not awake, but she started murmuring something. Sango put her ear next to Kagome's mouth and listened intently.
“Inu…yasha…” Kagome breathed.
Sango sat up and looked at Miroku worriedly. “I think…she just called for Inuyasha.”
Koga let out a small sigh and looked at the young miko. I guess she'll really never feel for me the way she does for Dog-breath. He smiled to himself and stepped out of the hut.
“At least Kagome-sama is saying something,” the monk reassured her. “Inuyasha will be here soon.”
“Mmm…” She nodded in agreement.
“Kagome…is going to be all right, isn't she???” Shippou asked desperately of Kaede.
“Yes, child. I think she will be just fine. Ye need not worry.”
Shippou just gave a soft whimper and looked up at the old miko with watering eyes then over at Kagome. “Please be OK, Kagome. We need you!” The young kitsune cub began to cry softly to himself.
Kohaku held onto Inuyasha tighter. The hanyou was now running through the forest so fast that the young demon slayer was in danger of falling off. Kohaku's thoughts soon fell on his sister as well as the wolf-demon who had saved him. During the battle with Naraku, he had gone over to Koga, and Kohaku was determined to protect the wolf-demon if Naraku had attacked them, but the young demon slayer still wished to speak with the wolf prince.
“I'm coming, Kagome! JUST HOLD ON!!!” Inuyasha roared.
The half-demon sensed that Kagome needed him. NOW. It pained him that Kagome's life was in danger, and he was sickened by the fact that he was not there to help her.
A few miles away, Kagome lifted up her hand slightly.
“Inu…ya…sha…” she called out once again and her hand fell to the ground. Kagome was now unconscious again, and her breathing was not as strong as it was not a moment before.
Sango gasped and touched the young miko's hand.
“IT'S GETTING COLD!!!!” she exclaimed.
Shippou started to wail uncontrollably and the monk began to pray. Outside, Koga snarled. That stupid mutt better get here soon or I'm going to kill him myself!
Sango looked pleadingly at Kaede. Surely there was something else they could do for Kagome!
“It is out of our hands, child.” The old miko explained sorrowfully. “It is up to Kagome and Inuyasha now. They need each other, and nothing we could do will help Kagome further.” Ye must hurry, Inuyasha. This young girl cannot live much longer.
A fierce expression was on Inuyasha's face, and he yelled out-
“KAGOME!!! DON'T YOU GIVE UP ON ME!!!”
