Kagome slowly turned her head to survey the picture before her. Koga was bleeding profusely and would certainly die if his wounds were not cared for quickly. Sango was smothering Kohaku with hugs and tears of purest joy while Miroku stood defensively in front of them. Sesshoumaru gave Kagome a suspicious sidelong glance as she looked at him. Kikyo was still on the ground, completely shocked by her failure to purify Naraku who had been greedily eyeing Sesshoumaru since the inu-youkai's arrival to the scene. Inuyasha, however, was staring dumbstruck at Kagome. He had never seen this kind of behavior or power come from her before, and it frightened him. What if she was going to do something reckless and get herself killed?!?! He couldn't let that happen.

Inuyasha had recovered slightly from his last attack against Naraku, and stood up decisively. No one was going to hurt Kagome…not even Kagome!!! He was going to do everything in his power to make sure she didn't try anything stupid.

“KAGOME!!! WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!?!” he roared as she slowly neared the center of the battle.

“INUYASHA! GET KIKYO AWAY FROM NARAKU!!!” she ordered ferociously.

It was first time Inuyasha never even thought about questioning her. She had never been so serious in her life, and he knew it. Inuyasha quickly jumped to Kikyo who was still facing the ground and leapt into the air and away from their enemy. Kikyo did not push him away or fight Inuyasha as he did this, either. She had put herself into an incoherent daze.

By the time Kikyo was safely away, Kagome was swelling with more of that bluish-white energy. Her hair was whipping about almost straight above her head and her clothes were flapping wildly. More of those present began to realize that Kagome's power had surged.

Sango stopped fawning over her brother and stared in amazement.

“Kagome-chan…” she said disbelieving.

Kohaku had appreciated how happy his sister was to have him alive, but he had wanted to help the wolf demon as best he could. Kohaku never wanted to hurt him, and Kikyo's earlier assurances that it wouldn't kill Koga if his shards were removed seemed a lie. It was he who had deeply injured the wolf, and he was going to do what he could to save Koga even if it was during this deadly battle. He wanted to apologize as well as find out why the wolf youkai had saved his life. Kohaku quickly jumped away from his sister and sprinted to where Koga was laying.

“Kohaku!” Sango shouted as she turned to go after her brother.

“No, Sango.” Miroku softly ordered. “Let him make amends alone.”

“You're right, houshi-sama.” She replied quietly, pulling back her arm and holding it to her chest.

Kohaku, however, was not the only one who took advantage of the group's attention on the young miko. Naraku decided that this was the best time to try and take Sesshoumaru into his body. All of the clumps of flesh in the surrounding area were at once flying at Sesshoumaru.

“Heh. Pathetic.” He said more to himself than anyone else as he raised the Tenseiga. “You will never see this part of your body again.” He assured Naraku as he slashed across the sky.

A large, black circle enveloped the pieces of Naraku's body, and they were subsequently sent to Hell. Sesshoumaru in his arrogance did deprive Naraku of some of his body but gave him enough time to send scores of tentacles at the inu-youkai wrapping themselves tightly around his neck, wrists, ankles and torso.

“Kukuku…Sesshoumaru…become one with me.” Naraku began to drag the inu-youkai lord toward his body when someone shouted violently.

“NO!!!” Kagome was glaring viciously at Naraku. “WE END THIS TODAY, NARAKU!”

Naraku was sickened to realize that he could not move his body, and Sesshoumaru, sensing his panic, easily sliced through the tentacles and backed away from Naraku. The inu-youkai gave Kagome an incredulous look and glowered at his half-brother as bright blue energy surrounded him.

Kagome's energy was now covering all in the area except for Naraku. Everyone seemed calmer within Kagome's light, and Kikyo lightly touched the area where her heart would be.

“This warmth again…” she muttered to herself as Inuyasha looked at her confused.

“Warmth?!” he asked.

“Yes.” Was all the response he got and Inuyasha didn't press any further since more important things were happening.

Naraku was relieved to find he could move again but was alarmed to see that Kagome's energy around her friends had magnified. Kohaku and Koga were both shocked to see that the wounds in the wolf demon's legs were actually healing.

“Koga-sama! Your legs!”
“I know, Kohaku. Kagome's really pushing herself.” He replied uneasily.

“Inuyasha.” Kagome commanded, “Use dragon-scale Tetsusaiga to hit Naraku with the kongoyuuha again.”

“Yosh…” He agreed though he was uncertain what good it would do. He turned to Naraku.

“YOU HEAR THAT, NARAKU?! IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO DIE!!!”

“I doubt a lowly half-demon such as yourself and your little miko wench can do much here.” Naraku insulted surprisingly calm for worry that was truly festering inside him. Even Kikyo never had this much power. He told himself while eyeing the now formidable priestess.

“I HOPE YOU ENJOYED SAYING THAT BECAUSE THOSE ARE YOUR LAST WORDS!!!!” Inuyasha bellowed before he roared, “KONGOYUUHA!!!!” and slashed at Naraku with dragon-scale Tetsusaiga.

Kagome cried, “IKEI!!!!” and the most electrifying and truly awesome purifying arrow any of them had ever witnessed combined with the swirls of energy that was Inuyasha's attack and tore into Naraku and his heart.

IMPOSSIBLE! Naraku thought astounded as he felt his life being ripped away from his newly-found body.

Nothing but lifeless clumps of flesh was present on the ground as massive swirls of demonic energy were absorbed by Inuyasha's incredible sword. Inuyasha had mastered Tetsusaiga well enough that even all of Naraku's demonic energy did not burn his hands.

Sesshoumaru glided over towards the flesh and sent it all to Hell with Tenseiga, still wrapped in Kagome's light.

Surprised that Kagome hadn't collapsed yet from all of the energy she was using, Miroku spoke.

“Kagome-sama. It's over now. Please stop before you kill yourself.” Miroku earnestly pleaded with the miko.

“No” she said calmly. “It's not over yet.” And she looked over at Kikyo who was still touching her chest.

Kikyo looked up at the young miko and frowned. “No.” she seethed. “Inuyasha belongs to me.”

“You're wrong, Kikyo. He belongs to no one.” She calmly admonished.

“DON'T LET HER TAKE YOU FROM ME, INUYASHA!!!” she screamed as she looked wildly at the hanyou.

“Ki-Kikyo!” he said startled as he looked from the undead miko to Kagome. “Kagome!” he yelled uncertainly, “What are you doing to her?” Inuyasha didn't know what to do. The person he had loved so long ago and had made a promise to was being hurt by the person he…yes, loved…now.

“I'm saving her.” She replied simply.

“NO!” Kikyo appealed to Inuyasha. “She's trying to KILL ME!”

Inuyasha glanced at Kikyo and then went back to staring at Kagome. Could he live knowing that the person he cared about most killed the person he had loved over fifty years ago? What kind of person would he be if he just let Kagome get rid of Kikyo because it was easier that way? As these thoughts plagued his mind, Kikyo's shikigami began to dissolve in the still blazing blue energy, and Kikyo's souls were fleeing her clay body as they had when she neared Mt. Hakurei.

Before Inuyasha could speak with Kagome and for once really tell her what was on his mind, Kagome spoke to the torn hanyou.

“Please, Inuyasha. Please. Trust me.” She quietly pleaded as a single tear fell down her cheek.

Inuyasha looked intently into Kagome's eyes for a few seconds, and then glanced at Kikyo. He looked on the undead priestess with sympathy and backed away from her. He had to trust that Kagome would never do anything to hurt Kikyo. It was Kikyo who had harmed Kagome in the past, after all. Kagome didn't have to save Kikyo from dissolving from Naraku's miasma, even if Kikyo did have to take part of Midoriko's soul later on to save herself from that fate. Why is it that Kikyo always seems to take while Kagome always seems to give? He thought gravely to himself.

“All right, Kagome. I trust you.” He said simply.

The brilliance of Kagome's miko energy could be seen from the village below, and all the townspeople gasped in awe at the magnificent light shining atop the mountain. The confidence Inuyasha had instilled in Kagome was overwhelming for her. Tears streamed down her face, and she sweetly smiled. She then looked down upon Kikyo as a mother would her misunderstood child, and said,

“It's time, Kikyo. Let me help you find peace.” Kagome concentrated all of her energy on Kikyo, and the two mikos were so brightly lit that those surrounding them found it difficult to watch them. Kikyo sneered at Kagome and tried to push the young miko away when she calmly touched her shoulders.

“Kikyo” she said serenely, “Naraku replaced the sadness and loneliness you felt when you were alive with hatred. It is time to let all of that go.”

Kagome closed her eyes and diverted most of her power to Kikyo. Only a feint bluish haze was surrounding Kagome while Kikyo was ablaze in white light. Kikyo's scowl slowly faded and she crossed her arms around her chest as a deep warmth she had never felt filled her empty body and soothed her battered soul.

She felt as if a cozy blanket was wrapping itself all around her, keeping her safe and filling her with the hope one has of a new spring during a dead and sullen winter. Then Kikyo turned to look at the more than shocked hanyou watching the scene and gave him the only smile she would ever give as an undead miko and closed her eyes.

“Arigato, Kagome-sama.” She thanked respectfully before finally letting go of all her intense bitterness and hatred and returning to the graveyard soil from which the clay body had been made. The last of the souls were only those parts of Kagome's and Midoriko's souls which Kikyo had used for herself, and they shot directly into Kagome and the Shikon no Tama respectively. The jewel had begun to purify as soon as Naraku had been destroyed, but with the addition of the rest of Midoriko's soul, the Shikon no Tama began to sparkle brightly.

Kagome, entirely exhausted from all she had done, collapsed unconscious after a small sigh had escaped from her lips.

“KAGOME!!!” Inuyasha yelled as the tears that had welled in his eyes from seeing Kikyo finally at peace and laid to rest were now falling from terror that Kagome might be following Kikyo into the afterlife.

He softly shook the teenage girl, limp in his quaking arms and bellowed desperately. “KAGOME!!!! WAKE UP!!!

KAGOMEEEEE!!!
