InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Falling For the Baby Sitter ❯ Returning ( Chapter 46 )
Inu Yasha dove towards Kagome, shoving her down to the floor of the cat walk that they were on, as the bullet barely missed both of them.
A cracking sound came from the left of them and Kagome screamed as part of the dry wall crashed to the ground, making it difficult for the others to see them as the area filled with thick clouds of dust.
Mayu cried out for her mother and screamed for Inu Yasha. Hojo sat there, a tight smirk gracing his lips as he gripped his bleeding shoulder. Most of his lackeys, who had not ran off with the rest, stood gathered tensely around him.
Inu Yasha coughed from the dust of the plaster from the wall and started to push the wreckage away from him and Kagome. "Kagome," he whispered. "Are you ok?"
The girl nodded silently and continued trembling beneath him. "How are we going to get her back, Inu Yasha?" she whimpered.
Inu Yasha smiled slightly. "I'm going to get her back, don't worry." He shoved back the wreckage and stood. The plaster dust clung to his black hair now, making it appear to be white. Inu Yasha picked up his gun and turned back towards Hojo and the others with wicked grin on his face.
A low murmur spread amongst the hit man as Hojo's eyes narrowed at Inu Yasha.
Mayu squealed excitedly. "Daddy!"
Kagome's eyes fell upon Inu Yasha's visage. Slowly, as she eyed his strong facade and determined countenance, she straightened herself into a sitting position, feeling her conviction being restored..
Hojo lifted his gun shakily to become level with the man. "Why don't you just die?!" he questioned, his voice cracking.
Inu Yasha raised his gun and began to squeeze the trigger with an insane look in his eyes. "You know, I have often asked myself that question, but I guess after three times of trying to commit suicide, I have figured out that death doesn't want me right yet." His grin widened as he squeezed the trigger. Inu Yasha watched the bullet graze Hojo's cheek.
Hojo yelped in pain as he leapt back, releasing his hold on Mayu. The girl bolted as soon as she was let free.
Kagome leapt onto the second level cat walk, then dropped down to the first floor with an, "Oompfh." Kagome nearly toppled over with the momentum that slammed Mayu's little body into her arms.
Hojo lifted his gun and fired up at Inu Yasha, his aim shaking badly.
Inu Yasha stood there, watching the blood pour from the wound on the man's chest, and then turned his gaze to Kagome and Mayu. "Is she ok, Kagome?"
Hojo crumpled to the ground moments later as Kagome nodded, holding Mayu tightly and lowering her smoking gun to the ground. His men, losing their last nerve at the eerie sight of Inu Yasha and their dead boss, turned tail and ran for the hills. Mayu erupted out of Kagome's arms and bounded over to Inu Yasha, latching onto him.
Inu Yasha fell to his knees and hugged the girl up as he began to cry. "Thank God, you're ok."
Mayu hugged Inu Yasha tightly. "You came and got me!" she sniffed. Burying her face into Inu Yasha's shoulder, she didn't see her crying mother walk up behind her and Inu Yasha.
She watched them both with tear filled eyes, before falling to her knees and embracing them both, sobbing into her little girl's back and gripping Inu Yasha's jacket.
Inu Yasha calmed down a bit and took a deep breath trying to settle his nerves. "We need to hurry and get out of here," he said as he wiped his face on his sleeve.
Kagome nodded as she scooped Mayu up. Turning on her heel, she hurried out of the warehouse, not paying any mind to the sirens in the distance. Moving swiftly she crossed the field and the parking lot to the plane, clutching Mayu to her chest the whole time.
Inu Yasha took one last look around and took off running at a full sprint behind Kagome. He darted up into the plane and took a deep breath. "It's all over now," he mumbled as he walked over to a seat at the back of the plane and sat down.
Kagome pulled out the bed at the rear left side of the plane as the took off. She carefully laid Mayu down and tucked her in, humming a soft lullaby to her.
Once they had reached full altitude, and Mayu had drifted off to sleep, Kagome walked up by Inu Yasha and exhaustedly lowered herself into the seat beside Inu Yasha.
Inu Yasha pulled out a pack of cigarettes and offered Kagome one. "Take one, I know you need it," he said.
She took the cigarette quietly and lit it up, inhaling deeply. Closing her eyes, she leaned her head against his shoulder, deeply inhaling his scent and another drag of the cigarette.
He pulled a cigarette out of the pack and lit it. The boy wrinkled his nose as he looked at his hair that was hanging over his shoulder. "Well, looks like I need a bath when we get home."
Opening her eyes and lifting them to his, she smiled slightly. Kagome pulled out her phone and dialed Sango's phone number.
"Hello?" the girl answered excitedly.
A smile graced Kagome's lips. "Hey," she said hoarsely. "We got her."
Sango's squeal rang throughout the cabin of the plane.
Inu Yasha raised a brow and spoke loud enough for Sango to hear. "You have to be talking to Sango, only she has a mouth that loud." He took a drag off of his cigarette and laughed.
Kagome's laugh bubbled past her lips. "How are the others?"
Sango shook her head. "Between trying to keep Kouga and Miroku still, I am nine tranquilizers shorter, but at least I have some peace and quiet. Muuona and Nazuna are in their room with the boys, and the last time I checked they were all asleep. I was just renewing the dosages on the guys to make sure they don't wake till morning."
Inu Yasha looked out the window of the plane as he put his cigarette out. He watched the lights of the city pass by with tired eyes.
Kagome nodded. "Sounds good. I'm going to have the pilot drop us in Charlotte and we'll get a hotel and be back tomorrow. Make sure the guys know we are ok."
Sango nodded. "Ok, will do. Call me tomorrow."
Kagome smiled. "Alright, talk to you later. Ja ne."
"Bai."
Inu Yasha leaned his head against the glass and closed his eyes. "So, how is everyone?" he asked quietly.
"Dead to the world," she murmured quietly. Kagome reached over, flipping open the small cabinet and pulled out a bottle of scotch. Popping the cork on the bottle, she took a few gulps of it before pulling it away fromher mouth, breathing heavily through her nose, holding the bottle towards Inu Yasha.
He shook his head. "No thanks, don't think my stomach can handle it right now."
She smiled slightly. "Come on, it will help you relax, and we all know that you could use that."
He wrinkled his nose and took the bottle, taking a rather large swig. Inu Yasha blinked a couple of times and handed it back to her. "That's some stout stuff," he said as he wiped his mouth with his hand.
She laughed and nodded. "It'll knock you on your ass," she said before taking another swig. The fiery liquid swirled down her throat and settled with spreading warmth at the pit of her stomach.
Inu Yasha closed his eyes and bowed his head slightly, letting out a sigh of relief. "I have never been so scared in my whole entire life," he mumbled.
She handed him the bottle again gently. "Thank you, Inu Yasha," she mumbled, trying to keep her voice steady.
He pushed the bottle back with his hand. "It was no problem, Kagome, I don't need a thank you."
Kagome put the bottle down firmly and gripped his chin in her hand forcing him to look straight up at her. "Yes, you do. I don't know what I would have done without you and your help."
Inu Yasha smiled slightly. "I was just keeping my promise that I made to Mayu."
A strange look settled over her face but she forced a smile and let go of his chin. She rolled over and leaned her head against the window staring out at the darkness.
The boy, oblivious to her thoughts, closed his eyes. "I feel like I haven't slept for a damn week," he said with a yawn as his plaster covered hair fell into his face.
"Go to sleep, I'll wake you up when we get there."
He nodded as his head fell forward with his chin resting on his chest as he fell asleep from physical and emotional stress.
Kagome's eyes flickered over the lights of the city below. The plane darted through the clouds for what seemed like hours, losing herself in the night.
Inu Yasha's breath came in a steady rhythm as he sat there, sleeping soundly.
Watching him quietly she ran through her thoughts of the day passed. A soft blush tinted her cheeks at the memory of the ride to the warehouse.
His nose wrinkled as some of his hair fell over it and tickled it lightly. Inu Yasha reached up and brushed it away as he mumbled in his sleep.
She giggled softly and reached over, brushing her fingers against his cheek softly.
A smile graced Inu Yasha's face for a moment before he leaned his cheek into her hand.
Kagome cupped his cheek and pulled him closer and leaned forward, brushing her lips against his gently.
Inu Yasha reacted by heaving a huge sigh and leaning his head on to her shoulder.
She smiled softly and curled her arms around his waist, pulling him close to her.
He slept resting his head contentedly on her shoulder only snoring a few times in her ear.
Giggling softly, the girl hummed gently, stroking his hair and rubbing his back during the ride home.
Inu Yasha yawned and opened his eyes slightly. "Are we there yet?" he muttered.
She smiled and looked out the window. "Almost, Inu-kun..."
He sniffled a little bit and closed his eyes again. "How much longer?"
She eyed the ground as the plane descended. "Five minutes, maybe. We're going to stay at a hotel in Charlotte tonight and meet up with the others in the morning.
Inu Yasha nodded. "I need a bath, bad," he said as he held up his hair to look at it.
She smiled and nodded slightly.
