InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Falling For the Baby Sitter ❯ Friday Jobs ( Chapter 68 )
Inu Yasha tugged the blanket up around his waist, still half asleep as the early morning light came in through the window. The girl beside him grunted and nuzzled her face against his chest as she wrapped her arms tighter around him as he shifted his position. He half smiled as he gently wiggled out of her grasp and got out of bed to pull on some jeans.
Inu Yasha glanced around his room, feeling kinda of odd that he was back home.
Kagome opened her eyes at his rustlings and looked up at him. A sleepy smile covered her features as she stretched. "Good morning..." Suddenly her eyes flew open and she sat straight up in bed.
"Oh my god! Are the kids up? What time is it?" A cold breeze that came from the open window suddenly drew her attention down to her exposed chest and she blushed darkly pulling the sheet up around her, her ebony hair falling around her face, stained with sunlight.
Inu Yasha looked at the clock on the wall as he zipped up his jeans "Don't worry, it's a little after six, I doubt they are awake yet," he said as he moved over to the closet and looked for a clean shirt.
Kagome glanced at the numbers and hands, still coming down from the high of having spent the night with him. She swallowed and closed her eyes, leaning back. "Look in the middle drawer. I put all of your shirts in there."
Inu Yasha nodded and closed the closet door and went to his dresser and pulled out a green t-shirt. He pulled it on and looked over at Kagome. "Go back to sleep, I have gotten to be an early bird here lately. You probably can get another two hours sleep before the kids get up," he said as he pulled his hair back into a ponytail. "I swear I will be quiet and not wake them up."
The girl nodded, and opened her eyes to look at him. "Are you leaving?" she asked as she watched him.
"Not now, no," Inu Yasha said as he threw her a large black t-shirt from his dresser. "Put that on."
She stuck her tongue out at him. "Why? What if I feel like being a nudist today?"
"Just didn't want you to catch a cold is all; but it's your choice Kagome." Inu Yasha said as he looked out the window. "Be bad if you got the flu right before Christmas you know."
Kagome smiled and slid out of bed and shook her head. She tugged on the shirt and plucked a g-string out of one of the drawers. She grinned up at him. "To wear or not to wear?"
He looked over at her and shrugged his shoulders. "Don't ask me, I don't wear underwear."
The girl's eyes widened and she dropped the butt-floss back in the drawer, then raced over and fell to her knees, pokeing at his hips and zipper. "Realllllllllllllly?" she asked her eyes lighting up wickedly.
He blinked. "Well, didn't you notice last night?"
She stuck her tongue out at him and leaned her chin on his abs. "I was kinda distracted, wasn't really paying attention to your wardrobe."
Inu Yasha smiled slightly. "Yeah, so I noticed."
Kagome smiled back at him looking up into his eyes, content just to know that he cared about her, if nothing else.
Inu Yasha glanced around the room before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a pack of cigarettes. "Want one?" he asked as he held them out to her.
She threw her head back and laughed, then leaned up, snatching one out of the pack with special maneuvering of her lips and winked up at him. "Arigatou."
The man laughed. "Still smoke huh?" he asked as he pulled one out and lit it. The young man took a draw from the cigarette and sighed. "Oh that's good."
Kagome nodded and snatched his lighter, lit her cigarette, tossed it back to him, snagged some underwear and tugged them on, then walked into down the hall and into the kitchen to get an early start on cleaning.
Inu Yasha yawned and followed her. He looked around the house. "This is the cleanest I have ever seen this house," he stated as he sat down at the kitchen table.
Kagome smiled slightly, speaking over her shoulder as she washed the dishes and such. "Yea... it comes when you pace the floors at night wondering how to make ends meet for three kids a part time job and not much of a babysitter."
Inu Yasha sighed. "Sorry about that," he muttered. "I thought I would be able to send you more money than what I did."
The girl smiled again and shook her head. "Don't worry about it." She pushed her hair off of her forehead and went about pulling out stuff to whip up some breakfast. "Hard motherhood runs in the family. I lived through it as a kid, didn't I?"
He closed his eyes. "Yeah, I didn't want the kids to go through it, and look what I did. I left and scared everyone to death; and god, I don't even want to know how my mom worried."
Kagome paused at the mention of his mother. She blinked at the cabinets then shook her head and looked down, mixing a biscuit batter together.
Inu Yasha finished up his cigarette and put it out in the ash tray. He slouched down in the chair and closed his eyes. "So, how is the gang?"
"Who?" she asked distractedly, pulling out pans and slapping a slab of bacon into one and cracking some eggs into another.
"You know, Nazuna and okaa; how are they?" he asked as he opened his eyes and looked at her.
She paused again as she was forming the biscuits in her hands before going back to work, a bit more vigorously. "I wouldn't know. The most I've seen of them is when Naraku comes over to pick up Souta and Shippou to spend time with them every other weekend."
The young mans brows furrowed. "That's kinda odd for them to do," he said. "But I guess they probably hate me right now anyway."
"Not really." Kagome set the bowl down on the counter a bit more firmly than she intended, sending an earsplitting crack through the kitchen.
Inu Yasha blinked. "What's wrong with you, Kagome?"
"Nothing," she mumbled quietly, as she got a tighter grip on her anger and set about breakfast again, this time more gently.
"Kagome, what's wrong with you? Did something happen while I was gone?" Inu Yasha asked as he brushed the bangs from his eyes.
"A lot of things happened while you were gone, which are you referring to?" she asked in a falsely light hearted voice.
His dark eyes narrowed. "Quit beating around the bush what happened between you and okaa?"
Chirping as if she didn't care, but her voice getting higher pitched as her bitterness and anger rose, she related the story to him.
"Oh well, okaa, after finding about you leaving heard from Kouga and Miroku about what happened and she decided that she wanted to go on a rampage against me for hurting her precious son. She as good as said that I wasn't good enough to look after her grandchildren, and that I was a horrible seductress wannabe." She danced around the kitchen with horrid, jerky movements humming and flipping eggs, pancakes and bacon.
Inu Yasha blinked. "She said that..."
"Something along those lines, I couldn't pick out the exact words between the vulgarities she was throwing at me. Her main basis for her argument was that Kouga was the only one for you because he had enough money to support your family without you having to work."
He rolled his eyes. "Now that sounds like her." Inu Yasha shook his head. "I'm sorry, Kagome, I will have a talk with her later today about that."
She sighed and pushed her hands back over her hair, gripping her head tightly. "Don't worry about it," she said quietly, clenching her eyes shut. She opened her eyes and blinked back tears before she started pulling plates out.
"Well I do, she shouldn't have said that. It was rude and uncalled for." Inu Yasha responded. "Money is nothing but the root of all evil."
Kagome shook her head and smiled weakly as she set plates on the table. "I as good as deserved it." Kagome walked down the hall and banged a few times on the kid's door. "Food's ready; up and at 'um!" She yelled through the barrier and walked into her room.
Souta sat up and rubbed his eyes as he nudged Shippou. "Hey get up you guys, it's time for breakfast," he said as he got up.
Mayu opened her eyes and yawned. She stumbled out of the room and started towards the kitchen, but stopped and plucked the phone out of it's cradle before it even rang twice. "'Lo?" she asked.
Kagome stuck her head out of the room. "Who is it, Mayu?"
Mayu blinked at the voice on the other end of the line. "It's Kouga."
Inu Yasha's breath caught in his throat as he looked at the little girl and then to Kagome. Panic showed in his eyes as he sat there, not knowing what to do.
Kagome paused then walked ourt of the room, tugging a long sleeved hoodie over her head, a flash of skin before she was consumed in black. She took the phone from Mayu and cradled it between her ear and the crook of her shoulder. "Hey, Kouga," she said as she hustled the straggling kids into the kitchen.
"Hey, Kagome," Kouga said cheerfully. "Do you need me to help you take the kids Christmas shopping today?"
Kagome smiled and set some glasses of milk on the table. "I'm sorry, I can't go, but if you think you can handle it you can take the kids. I have three job interviews today and shopping would be more fun for them than sitting in the room with me listening to some old fart they don't even care to know ask for my life story. I need at least two more jobs if I want to buy the kids' presents," she said softly, lowering her voice. "I think the bowling alley is going to fire me, the Friday nights gig is lowering its pay, and I can't live off a stripper's wages," she laughed into the phone.
Kouga sighed "Kagome if you need money I will give it to you, you don't need to work those stupid jobs. I love those kids like they were my own," he said.
Inu Yasha sat there watching Kagome, fighting the urge to grab the phone and speak to Kouga.
Kagome sighed again. "Kouga, I know that, but ... I'm just as prideful and stubborn as the man himself, and you know I want to make it on my own."
"Let me help you for once Kagome, please?" he asked
"No, Kouga," she said firmly. She straightened up and looked at Inu Yasha. "Besides, there's someone else who can go in my place with you."
Inu Yasha went pale and shook his head.
"Who is that? Sango or Miroku?" Kouga asked.
Kagome scowled. "No, never mind, I forgot that my babysitter's not scheduled until tomorrow." She gripped the phone and shifted it's position a bit. She sighed. "But the offer is tempting; I'll tell you that much. It's exhausting. I go from waking up at 5 usually and making breakfast in the morning, then they go to school and I go to work at Stix, then I pick them up from school and take them to their martial art's class and I do most of my interviews then. Then I work at the bar on Mondays and Wednesdays, I dance Fridays and Tuesdays, Sing on Friday too; the bowling alley on Thursdays and Sunday nights and then I work for that plant on Saturdays and Sundays. I'm going through babysitters like toilet paper!"
Kouga laughed. "Then let me help you out. I swear you as hard headed as..." Kouga stopped in mid sentence and sighed. ''Just let me help you out and consider it a Christmas present," he said sadly.
Inu Yasha sighed and lowered his head in relief.
Kagome rubbed her face and sighed. "Tell you what. If you can get me two new babysitters for Wednesday, Friday, Sunday and Monday, I'll consider letting you cover their first three payments."
"Kagome, just keep one job and I will be your babysitter, and cover whatever you can't," Kouga said in response. "Come on, it's a good deal."
"No." Kagome's voice was hard and her face was stony. "Absolutely not. Not after--" She bit her tongue and stopped herself short. "Just... no, Kouga. I don't want your money." She grinned lopsidedly. "Besides, I'm built for hard labor."
Kouga sighed. "It's not good for you to work so hard."
Just then Souta and Shippou ran into the living room dressed and ready for the day when Shippou squealed at the top of his lungs. "Good morning, Yasha!"
Kouga went silent as Inu Yasha froze.
"What did Shippou say?" Kouga asked.
Kagome made a shushing motion to souta and clamped a hand over Shippou's mouth as she struggled to get them to the table. "Nothing he was talking to the dog. Remember? I told you about the mop? Well they decided to name it Yasha because it kept shitting back there in his pigsty."
Kouga chuckled. "Alright, well, I will be by later today to drop off some things for the kids, alright?"
"Alright, see ya then, bye Kouga, and thanks." She clicked the phone off and sighed, slumping down the fridge till her ass hit the floor. She opened one eye and looked at the kids. "Hurry and eat, you have a half an hour 'till we're leaving, then I have to go to work. Kouga will pick you up from school and take you shopping. But keep Inu Yasha a secret. He's my present to Kouga, so don't let him know he's home yet. We're going to surprise him!" she smiled tiredly.
Souta and Shippou nodded as they sat down to eat breakfast.
Inu Yasha looked over to Kagome. "You're quitting those jobs I have plenty of money for all of us to live off of and who said I was going to be Kouga's present."
Kagome scowled over at him. "I said so, and why do I have to quit six very good jobs just because you say so?"
"Cause it's not good for you, and besides I'm well enough to work now." He shot back.
"So am I!" she countered.
"Well pick one and keep it!" Inu Yasha yelled.
Souta and Shippou sat there, eating and watching them argue in amusement.
"Fine! I'll keep the stripper job!"
"The hell you will!" Inu Yasha exploded as he stood up. "That job is degrading, and I know you're better than that!"
Kagome burst out laughing all of a sudden and threw her arms around him to steady herself. "I'm kidding!" she gasped. As she calmed down, she tightened her arms around him and tears of laughter ran down her face as she held him close. "God, it's good to have you back."
Inu Yasha blinked. "Huh? Did I miss something here or did you just lose your mind? And that wasn't the slightest bit funny!"
Kagome kissed him fully on the lips then leaned back to look at him. "Maybe you didn't miss anything, but I sure missed your bitching."
Inu Yasha huffed and sat back down in his chair. "Yeah, yeah."
She smiled. "Eat your breakfast. You're coming to work with me today."
The young mans eyes widened in surprise. "Huh? Why?" he asked.
She grinned wickedly. "Because you'll just love my Friday jobs."
