InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Fixing Our Mistake ❯ Prologue ( Prologue )

A/N: Forgetting 'My Other Self' for a bit…*sighs* it's just…not interesting me anymore. I've changed 'When Worlds Collide' completely around because this idea came to me while I was writing it and I couldn't pass it up. Hopefully this one doesn't screw up on me because I adore this idea.

Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha or the crew…unfortunately…if I did then lots more stuff that I want to happen would be happening…

"Rin!"

The girl turned upon hearing her name being called and allowed a soft smile to pull at the corners of her lips.

"Bankotsu…Kami it's good to see a non-hostile face."

"Hey…don't listen to them. Who cares what they think about you? You know you're not what they accuse you of being, I know it, the gang knows it…hell even they know it Rin."

A soft sigh escaped the girl as she nodded. "Yeah I know…but that doesn't make it any easier. You figure it would…I mean it has been two and a half years since..." her voice trailed off as she turned her gaze towards the ground.

The teen in front of her smiled encouragingly and slung his arm around her shoulders. "Come on, let's head to class," he suggested softly.

Nodding, Rin allowed herself to be lead to her first hour class.

Sesshoumaru watched the scene before him unfold and felt the twinge of pain and jealousy grow more insistent than usual. Quickly shoving it aside, he turned back to his locker and grabbed his Psychology book.

"Talk to her Sess…" came his brother's voice from his side. "Anyone who knows you can tell this is killing you. It has been since it happened."

"I have no clue of what you are speaking little brother. Nothing is 'killing me' as you put it," Sesshoumaru coolly replied before turning and walking off to class.

Inuyasha sighed as he watched his brother walk away. "Baka…" he mumbled as he shook his head.

Feeling a comforting arm slip around his waist, he turned his gaze towards Kagome and smiled lightly.

"I take it that he didn't listen to you…"

"Does he ever?"

The female standing next to him heaved a heavy sigh. "No, he doesn't."

"Damn it, we all know he made a mistake and that it's killing him. It's painfully obvious he wants to talk to her and straighten things out but he's just so damned stubborn that he won't admit it to anyone, not even himself."

"I know…he…" Kagome cut herself off and smiled slyly. "Inuyasha..."

"Yeah?"

"Who's weekend is it?"

"His…why?"

"I have a plan…you see when he goes…"

Rin flopped down on the couch and looked at the 21 month old little girl sleeping peacefully on her blanket in the middle of the floor. A soft smile graced her lips as she watched her. She was so peaceful, so oblivious to how cruel the world surrounding her could be. A wistful sigh escaped her as she wished she could be the young and innocent again.

Things would be so much easier if she were. It never would have happened. Her parents would still be alive, she wouldn't be living in this dump and working two jobs to be able to keep it and put food in her and her daughter's mouths. Absentmindedly the girl reached up and brushed away the solitary tear that was making its trek down her cheek.

Snapping out of her reverie, she cursed herself as she scrubbed the tear away. She stood up, walked over to the little girl who had just begun to whimper in her sleep, and picked her up. Setting her against her shoulder, she bounced the child lightly until she returned to her serene state once more. She hadn't had much time to spend with her daughter. School and her two jobs were making certain of that one.

"Maybe I should ask Nobushi and Ryoishi for some time off…what do you think honey? Momma giving the baby sitter a break and you and I spend an afternoon together? Sound good? Yeah I thought so too."

She sighed and shook her head, bouncing the child lightly once again. "Momma thinks she's going crazy. Talking to you while you're awake is one thing…talking to you while you're asleep and aren't able to reply is another."

Walking back over to the blanket she gently laid the child back down on it and then straightened.

"I really should go get your things packed…you are staying with Mamaw and Papaw for a couple of days after all…"

Staring down at her daughter, Rin fought off the urge to cry. It wasn't that it was the first time she would be away from her child overnight because it wasn't. She just got so lonely. Her friends were always away during the weekends because that was the only time they could see their families thanks to the requirement of staying at the school during the week if you lived any further than 10 miles away.

As if sensing her mother's distress the child stirred, gradually making her way back to the land of the waking. "Momma?" she asked rubbing her eyes with her tiny fists.

"Oh, Sakura baby, it's not time for you to wake up yet."

"Seep?" Sakura asked, watching her mother carefully through sleep laden eyes.

"Yes, sleep."

"Momma seep?"

"No, Momma doesn't take naps baby."

"'Kuwa seep?"

Rin, marveling at how smart her daughter already was, smiled and kneeled next to her, picking her up, and once again setting her against her shoulder. "Yes, Sakura sleep," she said softly as she moved and sat down in her rocking chair, rocking slowly so as to put the little girl back to sleep.

"Momma?" came her child's sleepy voice.

"What is it baby?"

"Dada hewe soon?"

Rin's throat tightened and she was forced to swallow several times before answering her daughter's innocent question. "Yes baby. Dada'll be here soon."

"Mmmmmm….'kay…nigh' nigh'"

"Night night honey."

Rin forced her tears away, telling herself that they were never there in the first place, berating herself mentally. 'No, that night was a mistake. We both admitted to that. We both admitted to being drunk. It shouldn't have happened in the first place. I don't want him to be with me out of guilt or sense of responsibility. I don't….I don't want him to be with me if he'll regret it for the rest of his life. He's already made one mistake of that severity; I won't allow him to make another.'

When Sakura was asleep again, Rin once more set her down on her blanket in the middle of the floor. Sighing, she looked around the living room.

"Diaper bag…diaper bag…where'd I put it?"

Spotting next to the television, she walked over and grabbed it, then walked to her daughter's room to get the supplies needed for her stay at her grandparents' house.

"Diapers, bottles, lotion, wipes, diaper rash medication, baby powder…" She paused and then scanned the room to make sure she hadn't forgotten anything. Seeing nothing she zipped up the bag and grabbed the small backpack to hold Sakura's clothes.

Once everything had been packed, Rin grabbed both the bag and the backpack then headed out of her daughter's room, flipping off the light on her way.

"Now that everything's packed all I need to do is….OH NO!"

To say the poor girl began to panic would be an understatement…no, Rin nearly had an anxiety attack at her sudden thought.

"Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!"

Sprinting to the bathroom, she jerked the medicine cabinet above the sink open then stopped dead in her tracks, breathing a sigh of relief.

"Alright, I didn't forget to fill it like I thought. Thank Kami…" she mumbled to herself, grabbing the box from the top shelf.

Opening the box, she pulled out a few of the syringes, closed it, and put it back. She walked back to the living room and placed them in the hidden pocket of the backpack.

"Alright…now all I have to do is write the instructions on how and when to give Sakura her medication."

Walking into the kitchen, she opened her 'junk' drawer and pulled out a notebook and a pen, then proceeded to write down the instructions on giving her daughter's medication, as well as where it was and why it was needed.

Just as she finished, her daughter came toddling in, looking wide awake. Knowing the child would not go back go back to sleep this time, Rin smiled at her and picked her up, setting her down in her lap.

"Have a good nap baby?"

The child nodded her head vigorously. As Rin was about to ask her daughter another question, the doorbell rang.

"Dada!" Sakura squealed, wriggling to get out of her mothers lap so she could get to the door.

Rin closed her eyes. 'I can do this…I do it every other weekend and on holidays…hell I was even forced to spend hours in the same room with him on her birthday…it's not supposed to be so hard after this long…is it? Stop it Rin! It's not hard! You don't have to talk to him, not even about the medication; you explained everything in the directions. Just take a deep breath and answer the door. You can do this.'

She took a deep breath and stood, walking over to the door, setting Sakura on her hip. She reached for it, but hesitated after her hand had wrapped around the knob, mentally cursing and preparing herself at the same time.

'You can do this,' she reminded herself as she turned the handle and pulled open the door, coming face to face with Sesshoumaru.

"I believe it is my weekend with our daughter…"
