Then
“Kagome,” Kikyou began.
They had been friends for nearly a year, living together helped that a lot. Kikyou had hung out with Kagome and her friends on more than a few occasions and had taken a real liking to Inuyasha.
“I was wondering if you minded, well since he’s your best friend and all . . . well-”
“You want to ask Inuyasha out don’t you?”
“Yeah.” Kikyou said, biting her bottom lip.
“It’s fine Kikyou. He’d totally go for you.” Kagome didn’t know why, but she wanted to say ‘no’. But she knew that was silly.
“Thanks Kags.”
“No probs. Kik.”
Inuyasha came in moments after that. He was busy talking about something hilarious Miroku had said. The girls looked at him. He was confused. Kikyou was looking at him hungrily and Kagome was looking rather sad.
“What’s up?” He asked, remaining casual.
“Kikyou,” Kagome turned and smiled. But Inuyasha didn’t like her smile. It didn’t light her eyes. “Would like to ask you something.” She jabbed her roommate in the side and Kikyou blushed.
“Well, I was wondering if you’d like to go out with me Inuyasha.” She said, her voice determined.
“Uh,” Inuyasha seemed caught off guard by the request. Kagome nodded slowly and pointedly. “Sure.” He smiled.
“Superb.” Kikyou clasped her hands in front of her and smiled.
Inuyasha and Kikyou made plans to go out that Friday, and then Kikyou ran off to class.
“What’s wrong?” He asked.
“Nothing.” Kagome said, trying to keep her voice casual.
“You don’t want me to go out with her?”
“I didn’t say that. In fact, Kikyou asked my permission.” Kagome laughed. “Isn’t that funny? I gave her the go ahead.”
“Oh.” Inuyasha was a discouraged by this. He had had a crush on Kagome for some time, and the fact that she was so cavalier about him dating someone else made him angry.
“Yep.” Kagome said, typing away on her computer.
“Well, I should go.” Inuyasha said suddenly.
“Okay.” Kagome said back, the confusion evident in her voice.
“I have a date to plan.” He said, bitterness in his voice.
“Right.” Kagome smiled and let him leave with out saying good-bye.

Kagome decided to stop moping around. Kikyou and Inuyasha had been dating for a few months and they were heading back home for summer vacation.
“I’ll call you.” Inuyasha said as he packed in the last box.
“Okay.” She smiled and hugged him. “I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Of course.” He kissed her quickly and got in the car with Kagome. “Bye.”
“Good Bye Inuyasha.”
“Good-bye’s are always sad.” Kagome said nonchalantly as she drove out of the student parking lot.
“What’s that suppose to mean?” He asked.
“What do you mean, ‘what does that mean’?”
“Nothing.” He didn’t really know what he was talking about.
“Whatever.”
The summer tension was evident whenever Kagome and Inuyasha hung out. They rarely looked at each other and if they laughed it was distant. Inuyasha didn’t like it.
“I’ll break up with her.” He said one day as they walked along the beach.
“What?” Kagome asked, taken aback. “Why would you do that?”
“If you don’t like me dating her.” He muttered.
“No. It’s fine. I want you to be happy.” Kagome smiled.
“I can be happy with out her.” He didn’t mean to say it, it just came out. But it was true. He didn’t love her, and he didn’t feel any real reason to be with her except for lack of a ‘back-up’.
“I’m sure you can. But you should have a girl.” She laughed.
“I just want to see you smile.” He said. He stopped walking and looked at her. Kagome turned around and looked at him.
“I do smile.” She said, indicating with a small upturn of her lips that she could indeed smile.
“It doesn’t reach your eyes.” He announced. “Like it used to.”
Kagome shook her head. “Maybe I’m just growing.” Kagome said.
“Maybe you just don’t want me to date Kikyou.” He smirked.
Kagome shook her head. “Now that’s putting words in my mouth.” She said.
“I calls it as I sees it.” Inuyasha laughed.
“You’re so weird.” Kagome turned and continued down the beach.
“Oh, you are going to pay for that.” Inuyasha chased Kagome around the beach.
She laughed and screamed, running away from him. She had no choice but to run toward the ocean. Inuyasha planned that. He hoped to get her in the water. Kagome realized her predicament and stopped running. “I give.” She smiled.
“Nope.” Inuyasha prowled up to her. “Not gonna work. You’re going under.” He said, stalking slowly toward her.
She backed closer to the edge of the water. It looked cold. She bit her lip. “Isn’t there anything I can say to get you to be nice?”
“Nothing comes to mind.” He smirked. He was close now.
Kagome looked back at the water. “I’ll be your best friend.” She tried.
“Already got that.” He said put his arms around her and lifting her. She shrieked playfully and held on against his neck.
“Please Yash.” She begged. “It looks really cold.”
He waded in to the water and pretended to drop her. “Yash.” Her voice held warning.
“Smile for me.” He said.
“I do smile Yash.” She complained.
“Oh, what’s that? I’m going to drop you.”
Kagome smiled and laughed. He was teasing her. He wouldn’t drop her after she said not to. She hit him on the chest but the small contact caused him to stumble and a wave overtook both of them.
“AHH!” Kagome felt the cold water rush over her and she blew water out of her mouth, shaking her hair. Inuyasha was still holding her, soaked to the bone. She smiled and started laughing. His ears flattened to his head, his hair framing his face, which held an ‘Inuyasha’ scowl. He looked at her as her laughter crossed his ears.
He saw the light dazzling in her eyes, the smile he missed so much was back. He hugged her. Getting drenched was worth seeing that light. “That’s better.” He whispered.
