The Wrong Man
Kagome didn’t cry on the way to the general physician. Her sadness consumed her, but she didn’t feel the need to cry. She allowed the doctor to examine her, and bandage her up; then the questioning began.
Kagome answered all of the Detectives questions with as much detail as she could.
“How long have you and . . . Inuyasha? Been friends?”
“Since like the seventh grade.” She said.
“And how long have you known Kouga?”
“We met in Lit class . . . sophomore year of college.”
“And did he seem to be attracted to you?”
“Yeah. For a long time. I was clueless, but apparently everyone else could see it. Then, a few days before I moved into my new apartment, he asked me out. We’ve kind of been dating ever since. That was six months ago.”
“Uh huh.” The Detective took notes and pondered his next question. “Now, has Kouga ever threatened to you before?”
“Well . . . yeah. I mean, not really, but this one time, about a month or so ago. We were watching a movie and he was mad, and he grabbed me by the arm, and . . . well it bruised. I still have it.” Kagome lifted her sleeve, but her arm was completely bandaged.
“And you didn’t tell anyone?”
“I told Inuyasha.” She said quickly. “I tell him everything. But I told him that it was probably an accident or something, and it was no big deal.”
“Uh huh.” He took more notes. “Any other times?”
“Not really. I mean, he’s always been a demanding kind of guy, but usually if I said ‘stop’ he’d stop.” Kagome admitted grudgingly.
“So, he seemed to be a well mannered guy.”
“For the most part.”
“Okay. When he invited you over this time, did you sense a disturbance? Did you warn Inuyasha to come looking for you?”
“No.” She said, feeling guilty. “I didn’t even tell Inuyasha.”
“You didn’t? I thought you told him everything.”
“I do. But he didn’t want me to date Kouga. He knew Kouga was a bad person, ever since the arm incident if not before.”
“So he always had a grudge against Kouga?”
“No. That’s not what I’m saying.” Kagome quickly said, realizing she had accidentally given them insight to the ‘Inuyasha suspected of attempted murder’ case.
“So what are you saying?” He asked.
“What I’m saying is that, yeah Inuyasha never much liked him. No one did. But, Inuyasha wouldn’t have harmed him if he hadn’t been protecting me. Inuyasha’s not a murderer.” She said confidently.
“Inuyasha’s lineage . . . what happened to his parents?”
“That’s not relevant.” Kagome said stubbornly.
“Of course.” He stood up. “Well, I think that will do. For now.” He smiled and shook Kagome’s hand. “We’ll keep in touch.”

Inuyasha was read his rights as he was pushed into the police car. He mumbled a ‘yeah’ when the officer asked if he ‘understood his rights as they had been read to him’. The ride to ‘holding’ was torture on him. He kept trying not to chuckle to himself. ‘If only I had killed the bastard! It could easily have been self-defense. Why did you stop me Kagome?’
He was tossed into the holding cell with Kouga. There were two other guys there, but Inuyasha didn’t pay them any attention. He didn’t even glare at Kouga (which under normal circumstances would be exactly what he would do), he simply stared at the concrete wall. He memorized the cracks all along it. Memorized the slight off color white. Every detail of the chipping paint.
“Why aren’t ya talkin’ dog breath?” Kouga sneered. “Sad that you can’t be with your bitch?” he was sure to keep his voice relatively low, due to the security guard at his desk. But Inuyasha could hear it as though Kouga were sitting right next to him, jeering in his ear. “What’s wrong? Bitch got your tongue?”
“Shut it Kouga.” Inuyasha snarled.
“Or what? You gonna try to finish what you started?”
“I was just defending Kagome’s honor.” Inuyasha said in a mocking tone; smirking as Kouga growled.
“Why are you being so calm?” His voice started to rise, as he started to loose his temper. “You’re going down for attempted murder asshole!”
“Well, yeah. But it was only attempted. I’ll be out in a few years.” He smirked, “Especially with ‘good behaviour’.”
“Good behaviour my ass. They think you tried to kill me. You’ll be locked up for life.”
“You’re severely challenged if you think that I’m going to be in here for life. You might be.”
“Why would I be in here for life?” Kouga asked.
“All the times you tried to murder me.” Inuyasha said, speaking louder than before.
“So what if I tired to kill you? You tried to kill me too.”
“Was that a confession?” Inuyasha smirked. “You know they have video cameras in here. They heard everything you just said.”
“Inuyasha Kurma?” Sergeant Cage looked in through the bars.
“Yeah.”
“Come with me please.” Inuyasha stood up and the guard let him out.
“Should we cuff him?” Cage whispered to the security guy.
Inuyasha rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry Serg. I’m not gonna off ya.”
Cage led him to an interview room. Inuyasha sat down for questioning, waiting.
Cage seemed to be looking for something, though what Inuyasha was unsure.
“Inuyasha.” He said. “You are a half-demon-“
“Could we for once pretend that Half-Demons are just as good as everyone else and not take away my credibility just because I’m a half-blood?”
“I just want your family history.” He said sharply.
“My father was Inutaishio Kurma, one of the most trusted Youkai ever. My mother was a fair maiden by the name of Kish Shan.”
“And your brother?”
“My brother’s name is Sesshomaru. I don’t know his mother’s name.” Inuyasha crossed his arms across his chest. “Can we move on to the important issue then?”
“Yes.” Cage finished taking notes and began questioning. “What happened to your parents, first? I understand you lived with your brother until you went to college.”
“Yeah I did. I don’t see how this is relevant . . . Sir.”
“Humour me.”
“Fine. My Father was murdered by a Youkai, surprisingly. My mother, died giving birth to me.”
“Okay.” He seemed very taken aback by this bit of information. “So, Inuyasha, what made you go looking for Kagome tonight?”
“I waited up for her to call. See, I found out she was going out with Kouga when our friend, let it slip. So I waited up thinking she’d call when she got back. Well I fell asleep and had this weird feeling that she needed my help. I went to her apartment but she wasn’t there, so I went to Kouga’s. That’s when I found them.”
“What was going on when you found them?”
“What do ya think was goin’ on?!” Inuyasha tried not to punch the Sergeant for being such an idiot. “He was trying to rape her.”
“Are you sure the girl wasn’t . . . enjoying it?”
“She was laying there crying! What do you think?!”
“I’m just trying to get to the bottom of this. There’s no need to raise your voice.” Cage wrote something down before asking. “So what did you do?”
“I took Kouga by the neck and threw him across the room.” Inuyasha said honestly. “Then, I told Kagome to leave. Then I beat him up.”
“And, you continued to strangle him even though Kagome was well out of harms way?”
“Well, I didn’t want him taking off after her.”
“Mm hmm. Have you ever murdered anyone Inuyasha?”
“Oh yeah, loads of times.” He said, his voice wreaking with sarcasm.
“You can get arrested for false information Inuyasha.” Cage warned.
“Well it was a stupid question.” Inuyasha said.
“Would you have murdered Kouga?”
“I would never do anything Kagome didn’t want me to do.”
“Fine. I’m going to take Kouga in for questioning. Please come back to the holding with me.”
“Fine by me.”
**
Inuyasha watched the wall while Kouga was being, assumingly, questioned. He wondered what kind of wild story Kouga would come up with. He couldn’t think of one that the cops wouldn’t see through, but if he knew Kouga he’d find a way.
Meanwhile, all he could do was wait. Soon he would move on to trial and then he would be sentenced. He knew that he would get a fairly extreme sentence because of his heritage; but as long as Kouga was in jail too, he didn’t care. Kagome was safe.
