Kagome sat in her apartment the next day, waiting for Inuyasha to call. They would have to let him out before trial, or at least give him time to use the phone. She didn’t care if he had to call collect; she needed to talk to him.

As though her thoughts were read her phone rang. She jumped slightly and picked it up with a hurried ‘hello, Yash?’.

“Hey Kagome, no, it’s Song. What’s up?” She asked.

“Oh, hey Song.” She said, her voice displaying her disappointment.

“’Oh, hey Song’? What’s that? Why didn’t you call me this morning? I read Inuyasha and Kouga’s names in the paper. What the heck happened?” But before Kagome had a chance to respond Sango continued. “I read that Kouga is being charged with sexual assault, possibly rape, and that Inuyasha is going down for attempted murder? What’s going on?”

“It’s a long story Song. I don’t know if I feel like going over it right now. Especially on the phone. Why don’t you come by later. And bring Miroku, I don’t feel like repeating it.”

“Sure. We’ll come by later tonight. Is Yash in jail?”

“Yeah.”

“Seriously? Who did he try to kill? The paper said Kouga. Is that true?”

“Yeah. We can talk when you come by later.”

“’Kay. Later.”

Kagome put the tea kettle on the stove and turned it on high. Her nerves were getting to her. She was going to visit Inuyasha in approximately four hours. Not only had she never been in a jail, she had also never had to see Inuyasha in such trouble.

“Even over me.” She said as Sango poured the tea.

“I know Kags. But, he did good. He’ll get off, it’s okay.” Sango sat down and stirred her tea, looking concernedly at Kagome.

“I know everything will be fine, but I just can’t think like that. I mean, it’s too hard and weird. I want to know that he’s at home, waiting for me. Ya know? I don’t want to think about him as being so . . . alone and in trouble. I’ve never felt so helpless.”

“It’s okay Kagome.” Sango hugged Kagome and she allowed herself to cry.

“I just feel so bad. I want him to be home and safe. He’s always been so helpful and caring. He’s the sweetest, most honest, and open guy I know.”

“Yash? Mr. “Doesn’t talk to anyone”?”

“He talks to me. He’s so sweet. And gentle and loving and I love him. . . Oh my god. Yash.”

“What?”

“I love him.”

“Yeah we all do. And he’ll be fine.” Sango reassured.

“No Sango. I love him. All this time . . . why didn’t I see it before? I love Yash.”

“Bout time you figured it out.”

“But it’s weird now.” She bit her lip. “I don’t know what to say, how to act. It’s just that he’s so nice and he cares so much, and he always saves me. It’s like we’re connected.”

“You’ll be late.” Sango pointed to the clock. “They don’t let you check in after four.”

“Right.”

**

“May I help you? You look a little scared.” The receptionist smiled.

“Yes. Hi, I’m Kagome Higarashi. I’m here to see a prisoner.”

“What’s the name?” She asked, still smiling.

“Oh, um, Inuyasha Kurma.” Kagome said, looking around.

“Ah yes. The Hanyou.” She said. But her voice didn’t hold the usual tone associated with the statement. It was kinder. “Thank you Ms. Higarashi. As soon as a guard is available you will be escorted to the visiting room. Visiting is only for half an hour.”

“Thank you.” Kagome smiled wearily to the woman and sat down on one of the chairs.

The room was bleak and dismal. It was an off-white color. They say it's soothing, but it’s not. Kagome shifted in her chair as she watched the clock tick by. There was no one else around, how much time could it possibly take to get a guard to take her to Inuyasha?

“Miss Higarashi?” Kagome stood up quickly and smiled to the guard.

“Yes.” She said, walking toward him.

“Come with me.”

She did as instructed. They were buzzed into another hallway, one that was even sketchier than the waiting room. The walls were chipping and it looked like they had been punched more than a few times. Kagome walked close to the guard, becoming very paranoid.

“In here.” The guard said. “Inuyasha, you’ve got company.”

“Why is he in here?” Kagome asked. She had seen a few prison movies and this looked like one of those ‘solitary’ rooms.

“Tried to punch another inmate.” The guard explained.

“Oh.” Kagome shook her head. She’d bet her right arm it was Kouga.

Kagome looked up and saw Inuyasha. He was shackled and she wanted to smack someone for torturing him so much.

“Yash.” She whispered.

“Hey Kags.” He smiled to her.

“You have a half hour. If he tries anything funny just call me.” The guard said.

“Thank you.” Kagome went in the room with Inuyasha and immediately hugged him. “I’ve been so freaked out of my mind.”

“It’s okay. You’re okay. I’d hug ya back but I can’t.” Kagome nodded and wiped at her tears. “Don’t cry.” Inuyasha said, trying to help her. “Why are you crying?”

“It’s all my fault.”

“What? No. It’s Kouga’s fault. He’s the asshole who pressed charges.”

“Did you try to punch him?” Kagome asked.

“Yeah. I didn’t want to listen to his mouth, so I got solitary on purpose.” He explained.

“Yash. That’s going to look bad when you go to trial.” She said.

“Are you kidding Kagome? There’s no trial. I’m a Hanyou. I’m getting the death penalty.”

“But you didn’t even really do anything.”

“I know that. You know that. They don’t care.”

“Yash, I’ll do anything to get you out of here.” Kagome said. She stroked his hair, moving his bangs out of his face. “I promise.”

“It’s okay Kagome. You’re safe, that’s all I need to know. And if I . . . well die, Sess will take care of you. It’s all going to be okay Kagome.”

“It won’t be okay if you die Inuyasha.” Kagome had to tell him everything she felt; she might not get another chance and that was the reality she had to face. “I was talking to Sango earlier, we were talking about you, and I realized I’ve taken you for granted.”

“Kags stop-”

“No. You always take care of me. You’re in jail for me, you can’t get much more devoted than that. I’ve never been as selfless as you. I’m sorry I didn’t realize sooner just how important you were to me. You’re my best friend in the world Yash and I . . . I love you.”

“I love you too Kags. It’s going to be okay. And stop talking crazy. You’re the least selfish person I know. And I would do anything to protect you; no matter what the consequences.”

Kagome hugged him again as she cried again. He didn’t understand. She had openly admitted loving him and he thought she meant as a friend.

“You should have killed him.” She whispered.

Inuyasha laughed shortly. “I know.” He whispered back.

“I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

“Five minutes Miss.” The guard said from the other side of the door.

“Okay.” Kagome called back. “Yash, I want you to call me okay? I’ll accept the collect calls or whatever the charge.”

“Okay Kagome.” Kagome sighed. She turned to walk out but then changed her mind. She couldn’t leave like that.

She walked back to Inuyasha and kissed him. She realized he didn’t fully understand her confession and must therefore be showed. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him to her.

Inuyasha was taken aback to say the least. He openly accepted the kiss and craved more. The only thing that would have made him happier, was if he could hold her back.

“I love you Inuyasha.” She repeated, her forehead pressed against his.

“You mean it.” He stated.

“Of course.” She smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “I’ll get you out of here some how.”

“I love you.” He said. She smiled at him and nodded, before taking her leave.
