Chapter 30: More than a Petty Crime

~ Kagome kept her head turned out the window, she knew Inuyasha was following them, but he wouldn’t do anything to stop the car. Anything he would try to get Kouga to stop would endanger Kagome so he wouldn’t try anything.
Kouga slowed down at a red light, his breaks were working fine. Kagome sighed with relief; Inuyasha’s plan hadn’t worked anyway. She had a feeling Kouga was taking her to his house and she allowed herself to be escorted (he would probably pass out when they got there anyway).
Kagome’s phone rang and she looked down, she hadn’t realized that her phone was in her pocket. “Hello?” she answered.
“Hang up.” Kouga demanded.
“Can’t really talk right now.” She said
“Hang up.” Kouga said with more force.
Kagome clicked the phone closed and slumped back against the chair. “It was only my mother.” Kagome said.
“Whatever.”
~ Inuyasha hung up the phone and threw it onto the passenger’s seat. “Fuck!” he cursed, speeding to keep Kouga’s car in sight. They had already come across three red lights and Kouga’s breaks appeared to be working fine. Inuyasha sighed. He was both disappointed and relieved. He was disappointed that his plan wouldn’t have worked but incredibly relieved that it hadn’t, since Kagome’s life now hung in the balance.
Kouga swerved up ahead and Inuyasha was back on alert. There didn’t seem to be anything in the road, or any reason why Kouga would swerve. “Probably his drunken stupidity.” Inuyasha muttered. He only hoped that Kouga’s penthouse wasn’t far away.
~ Kouga didn’t take the road that led to his penthouse apartment.
“Uh Kouga, I think you missed your turn.” Kagome pointed out.
“We’re not going to my place.” Kouga said.
“Why?” Kagome asked.
“Cause I just got this car, and I wanna feed it a little speed.” He said stupidly as he turned onto the interstate highway.
“Kouga, that’s not a good idea. It’s raining and icky out, maybe you should save it for another day.” Kagome nodded to encourage what she was saying.
“Nope.” Kouga pushed harder on the gas as he swerved in and out of traffic, finding the fastest lane.
“Okay we got some speed, now could you please slow down?” Kagome asked as he narrowly passed another car.
“Nope.”
Kagome tried not to look like she cared, but she was scared to death.
Somehow they managed to get off the highway in one piece, and now they were cruising at steady 60 miles an hour on the scenic coastal route.
“Kouga the speed limit is 35. There are a lot of twists and turns around here.” Kagome urged in a motherly tone.
“So what? Don’t care.” Kouga sped around another corner and noticed an animal on the road ahead. “Fuck!” He shrieked as he went to stop.
The car didn’t stop.
He slammed on the breaks again and again but it was useless. The fox scurried out of the way and finally the breaks kicked in slightly as the car spun around multiple times.
Inuyasha, who was still following, came around the corner doing nearly seventy miles an hour. He saw the car sideways on the road and cursed as he slammed on the breaks… it was too late. He crashed into the side of Kouga’s car. He flipped over the car and tumbled down the side of the cliff. Kouga’s car was knocked backward and it too skidded down to the ravine below.
Inuyasha watched as the world turned upside down, three, four, five times before the car finally crashed to a halt. He tried to get out of the car (he was fearful of the combustion probability), but his seatbelt was stuck and he couldn’t get out. He saw Kouga’s car glide easily to a stop, it had been tumbling backward but didn’t appear to have flipped.
He saw as Kagome emerged from the car. He wanted to scream to her but his voice wasn’t working. He reached out and saw his hand covered in blood. His legs felt as though they were crunched beneath the steering wheel. He felt the blood rushing to his head, since the car was upside down. It was just as well – he probably deserved what was coming to him. He just wished he could say good bye to Kagome.
Kagome scrambled out of the car and ran toward Inuyasha. She stood outside the window, pounding and knocking, trying with all her might to open the door but it wouldn’t budge. Inuyasha watched her… was he deaf? He listened for her sobs, which he could see abusing her small form. He was deaf… or he felt it in that moment.
Kagome fumbled with her cell phone, dialing 911. She could barely get out all of her words as she sobbed into the phone for help. She hung up, discarding the phone carelessly as she pounded on the window again.
“Inuyasha! Try to unroll the window.” She shouted, her logical mind coming back to her.
“It’s automatic Kagome.” Inuyasha reminded her. He could hear again, and the world had sped up, everything was occurring in real time again. “Kagome… Kagome” she looked up at him, as though she didn’t realize he were there. “I love you.” He said as tears welled up in his eyes. “I love you.”
“I love you Inuyasha.” Kagome sniffed back her tears as she held her hand up to the glass. Inuyasha tried to move his hand but it felt broken. He could heal quickly enough if he could get to safety. He just needed to rest up a bit, but the broken leg and possibly arm would heal in no time.
Kagome removed her hand when she realized Inuyasha couldn’t move his. She wasn’t going to stop and wait for help. She ran over to the passenger’s side window and kicked the glass in. The glass shattered and she smiled, if she could get in there she could help him.
“I’m going to get you out.” She tried to undue his seatbelt but the latch was stuck. She struggled for a few minutes before turning to Inuyasha. “Can’t you use your claws to undue this?”
“I can barely lift my arms Kagome.” Inuyasha hated admitting it… he felt weak. He couldn’t even save himself, let alone protect Kagome… he felt worthless.
Kagome tried to rip apart the material, but that wasn’t happening. She sighed in frustration. If only she kept a knife in her car.
“Kagome, I can smell the gas leaking. I think… I think you should get far, far away from this car.”
“I can smell it too Inuyasha. I’m not leaving you.”
“Get away!” Inuyasha yelled.
“NO!” Kagome screamed back, her tears winning the battle against her. “I’M not leaving you; I don’t care how stubborn and noble you are trying to be! I can’t live without you!”
“I can’t let you die.” Inuyasha’s voice had turned into a ghostly whisper. Kagome shook her head.
“That’s why we have to get out of here.” She tried again with the seatbelt, but it was still a fruitless effort.
Inuyasha tensed his arm, it hurt like a bitch but he was going to deal with it. He used all of his energy and focused on nothing put slicing through his seatbelt. He worked through the pain and clawed at the material, slicing it in two. Kagome smiled as relief hit her. She worked the seatbelt away and tried to pull him out.
“Ow, stop!” Inuyasha tensed and Kagome stopped. His legs were stuck under the steering column.
Kagome didn’t know what to do now. Inuyasha might have had the strength to cut through a seatbelt, but she doubted he had the strength to life up the dashboard. Kagome sat back and felt the tears coming to her eyes again. The smell of gas was getting stronger, and she had a feeling it wouldn’t be long until the whole car blew up.
Meanwhile Kouga was emerging from his car, cursing that it was wrecked. He didn’t seem to care about Kagome, or Inuyasha. Kagome shook her head at him and turned back to Inuyasha. She gripped his hand lightly kissing him on the cheek.
“I love you.” She whispered.
“I love you.” Inuyasha’s eyes began to close, Kagome didn’t try to keep him awake; instead, she too closed her eyes, waiting for whatever would happen … to happen.
