Kagome led the long line of children into the walls. She held two babies that seemed to greatly enjoy pulling her hair. Other much older children carried the younger kids that seemed to have either trouble walking or were still to little to walk.
As the parade walked in progress seemed to stop all together. Everyone watched as Kagome herded the kids into the palace and down the halls to the bathrooms. Many of the servants who had tended her in her depression rushed to help with any task assigned to them.
Kagome pulled at the tattered remains along with three other servants. All together they finally got all of the children undressed with few problems and into the steaming water of the baths.
“Will someone send for clothing and tell the cooks lunch will be served outside. I also need someone to send for Rin and Shippo and tell them to join us in the gardens. Lessons will be postponed for the day.” Kagome smiled and returned to scrubbing the demon in front of her. He was short and obviously not meant to be thin. “What is your name?” She asked softly pulling leaves and twigs from his hair.
The boy looked at her with confusion. For across the bath a girl answered her. “We don't have names. He doesn't talk, many don't know how.”
Kagome thanked her for the information. “Well, we can fix that can't we.” She poured a bucket of water over the boy's head and scrubbed away the last of the dirt to revel a thick leathery skin with the markings of a snake. “I need a scribe in here.” Kagome called.
Moments later Jaken stumbled in. “My Lady what could this one do for you?”
”Jaken! Thank you for coming, I'm glad you're here. Your intelligent so you can help. Do you know what kind of demon this little on is?” Turning the boy Jaken mumbled under his breath but resigned himself to the work given to him.
Over an hour later all the kids had been bathed and clothed in new clothes and Kagome led them out into the garden.
Two of the oldest children followed at her side looking at the woman beside them with caution and confusion.
“Ah, here we go.” Kagome motioned to the feast set out on the table.
“Lady Kagome, we will take our leave.” One of the helpers bowed.
“Non-sense. Eat then you may return. I'm sure word has traveled already of my actions. You will need to eat before being questioned by every living soul in the palace.” Kagome smiled and helped one of the children get a plate.
Once everyone was settled Kagome could feel her own children joining them. Standing she set her tea cup down and moved from the group to greet them. “Shippo, Rin-rin.” Placing a kiss on their head she turned and knelt. “I have brought play-mates and siblings.”
“Lord Sesshomaru will not like this Lady Mother.” Rin said hesitantly.
“Rin-rin, what have I told you about that. I told you to let me handle the adult things and you just be a kid. So what are you going to do?” Kagome scolded.
Many of the stray kids watched. Those who understood the conversation listened hoping to get some answers; others just watched understanding the body posture and auras.
“Yes Momma. I'm going to play and have fun and not worry about adult things until I'm an adult.”
”Good. Any peeps from you Shippo?”
”No Momma.”
”Good. These kids are like Uncle Inu. You will treat them like you do each other, and will teach them things that good boys and girls do, none of this getting into trouble. Sesshomaru put me in charge of punishments and I don't think you want me to have to do that, now do we?”
Both children bowed their heads and answered `no ma'am.'
“Now get some food and join us.” Kissing their heads again Kagome pushed them towards the table. “Don't spoil your dinner. And no sweets unless you've eaten half a plate of regular food.”
”Alright.” Kagome took her seat again and picked up her tea. Looking down at it she smiled as she pulled out a worm. “Funny.” Placing the confused creature on the ground next to a bush she turned back to her audience. “Any other tricks?”
Many giggled and but shook their heads. “Alright. My name is Kagome.” Saying it slow and pronouncing it she continued. “I am Lady of these lands, my mate is Lord of the western lands. You are now in my care. I will teach you and take care of you. Anything you need you come to me. Alright? When your old enough you can decide what you want to do. Like be a warrior or a healer. I'm not trying to make you do anything you don't want to do. If there are any problems you come to me.”
Beside Kagome the oldest girl cleared her throat to get the woman's attention. “Why are you doing this? You are a demon and we are below you.”
Kagome smiled. “So? I was human before I mated Lord Sesshomaru. I am the Shikon Miko. My best friend is a half demon like many of you. Where I grew up, no one cared about what you looked like or what your blood was. I believe in giving everyone a fair chance and I don't think it's right to judge someone. I have convinced my mate that by allowing you into our home, you will help us as we help you. I understand if you do not trust us right away, but I accept that things take time, and I am in no hurry.”
Everyone listened to her but Kagome knew that they were still cautious. Letting out a sigh Kagome stood.
“Please don't go.” A little girl cried. Everyone froze at her out burst not expecting the high pitched shrill.
Kagome looked at the little girl and knelt in front of her. “I'm not leaving.”
”But your angry. Angry people leave.”
“I'm not angry at you, I'm angry at the people who left you alone. I'm angry that people are judgmental. I promise I'm not going anywhere.” Standing she smiled down at the girl.
Shippo and Rin watched their mother with fascination both wanting to be like her.
“We've never had a mother.” The oldest boy blurted. Turning Kagome stared at him surprised. The boy cowered afraid he'd be hit.
Kagome smiled and again knelt wrapping her arms around him. “I'm sorry, if you give me the chance I'll try and be that person.”

Dinner was quiet. Sango and Miroku had taken the new additions with little questions. They knew Kagome was a giving person and it was something she would do, but they had been surprised when Sesshomaru didn't have anything to say on the subject other then `My mate is in charge of this and anything that pertains to this will need to be address to her.' Which they had translated to `Kagome did this, I had no choice.'
Surprisingly the children were well behaved but had no table manners.

Kagome knocked and stepped lightly into her mate's study. Every child was asleep with a servant in the room just in case. Feet soar and a headache pounding behind her eyes, Kagome fell into a chair in front of her Mate.
Sesshomaru finished writing out his letter before sealing it and looking at his Mate. “It is time to retire.”
”Alright.” Kagome forced herself out of the chair and towards the door, followed by Sesshomaru. The headed towards their room and were almost there when Jaken came running up to them.
“My Lord, my Lady, Inu Yasha has returned.” Panting, the toad bowed.
Kagome looked at Sesshomaru and he looked at her. “Come. We will return to my study. My brother will know where to meet us.” Sesshomaru left without waiting.
“Thank you Jaken, go to bed. You look tired. We'll be fine without you until noon tomorrow, so sleep in.” Winking the woman returned to the study.
