Kagome felt her feet touch the ground as Sesshomaru landed in the courtyard. Sango Kirara and Miroku sat under a tree waiting for them to return. Jaken was already rushing over to see if there was anything they needed.

“Lord Sesshomaru, Lady Kagome, what can this Jaken do for you?”

Sesshomaru looked down at the toad and ignored him.

Kagome bent down to look Jaken in the eyes. “I have to do a ritual, do you think you could help Sango and me set it up, I'm sure you know where everything is.” Smiling she kept her voice soft trying not to think to hard on the girl the poor demon had lost.

“Yes, of course, Lady Kagome, right away.” He stumbled off and into the castle.

“I'm going to drop the barrier and let everyone out and know it's safe. Can you explain to Miroku what I'm going to do while me and Sango get everything set up?”
”I can do that.”
”Thank you.” Kagome flashed him a smile and ran over to pull her friend into the castle.

 

“You are telling me Lord Sesshomaru, that tonight the Gods, that have been training our Lady Kagome, will watch over us as she performs a ritual to tie my life to hers. Why?”

“This one will not explain again.”

“Does that mean your clueless or that I'm just not getting it?”
Sesshomaru growled but didn't kill the monk in front of him.

“My apologises Lord Sesshomaru, but it a bit much to take in. I wasn't aware there were such rituals.”
”This one is telling you that tonight his mate will extend your life to hers through a very vague ritual that only the wise one's know of. Later within the season the slayer and the hanyou will go through a similar ritual.”

“Why do I go first?”

Sesshomaru sighed, “This one doesn't know for sure but Kagome was told you were to be tied tonight.”

“Do you know what will happen?”
”No. Kagome will be lead by the Gods themselves.”

“And you trust her?”
”It is her will.”
Miroku felt a cold chill settle over him as the information sunk in. Their innocent miko wasn't as innocent as they had believed, in more then one way. Accepting what he had been told Miroku sat with the demon Lord until they were summoned.

 

Kagome smiled as Jaken lit the last candle. The room was filled with perfumes and colored candles. A tapestry was laid out and covered with xeranthemum petals. (A/N: yes it is a flower, look it up. It means immorality). The room was small and had no windows but Kagome knew that it wouldn't matter because whatever the ritual need done was spiritually not physical.

“Thank you Jaken. Why don't you go and see about putting Rin and the others to bed. We won't need you if at all tonight.”

“Yes Lady Kagome, shall I fetch Master Sesshomaru and your friend?”

“No thank you, I'm sure Sango can get them.” Sango nodded and left following Jaken.

 

Knocking on the big door Sango entered.

“Kagome's ready.” She called.

Sesshomaru stood followed by Miroku. Sango led them to Kagome who seemed deep in thought.

 

Miroku gulped down the bile building in his throat. He was scared. Not even the wind tunnel had been this scary. Kagome smiled at her friend who was laid out on the tapestry. Rubbing her hands together with part of her tongue sticking out she placed a barrier and began.

 

Sesshomaru paced outside of the room that held his mate and her friend. He didn't know what was going on due to the barrier and heavy scents. Beside him the slayer paced opposite him in the same fashion.

“Do you think something wrong happened?”

“Hn. This one trusts that Kagome will be guided correctly.”

“Oh I hope so.” Beginning to worry her hands Sango groaned and continued pacing.

 

Kagome pulled back into her body. Miroku sat up gasping for air and each candle flickered out one-by-one. The heavy thickness in the air, which Kagome knew was the presents of the Gods, lifted leaving only them.

Clutching his chest Miroku continued to pant.

“Oh stop Miroku, your just over-reacting.”

“Lady Kagome, I suggust we never do this again.”

Standing and brushing the petels from her robes Kagome offered her hand to her friend.

“What does it feel like?
”It is like falling through the air. Being weightless as you would say.”
”Like nothing could hurt you and you'll never die?”

“Yes. Much like that.”
”Then we have been success full.” Smiling Kagome dropped that barrier.

 

Sesshomaru felt his mate the moment that barrier inside the room disappeared. He opened the door and motioned the two standing people to come out.

Sango turned and rushed the Miroku's side. “Are you alright?”

“Yes my love. I feel alive.” He smiled and wrapped his arms around Sango.

“Are you alright Mate?” Sesshomaru asked as Kagome stopped at his side watching the two before them.

“A little stiff.” She stretched and smiled as her back popped and realigned.

SMACK

“Hentai.” Sango screamed at the now unconscious monk at her feet. She stomped away with her nose in the air and a light blush on her cheeks.

Kagome held a giggle back with her hand as Sesshomaru watched un-amused.

“Shall we go to bed?” Kagome yawned.

“Do you wish to sleep here or at the battle field?”
”That is a stupid question.” Kagome glared at her mate before walking off down the hall to their room. Sesshomaru growled under his breath but followed after his mate.

 

`Lord Inu Tashio, we have received word that the North has began preparing to move.” A guard bowed to the elder and waited for either orders or to be dismissed.

“My son and his mate will probably not return until sun rise, I doubt the North will move until then, prepare for emergency attack but get what rest you can until then.”
”Yes Lord Inu Tashio.”

With a wave of his hand he sent the guard away to continue his meditation.

 

Kagome smiled as her mate's arms wrapped tightly around her delicate frame. His nose was pressed against her neck and he was purring, sending ripples though her body that seemed to relax even the tightest muscles. Letting out a deep breath Kagome closed her eyes.

Moments later there was a musical knock at the door.

“Leave.” Sesshomaru growled

“Daddy, Rin had a nightmare. Can she sleep with you and Momma?” The little girl's voice held remains of tears.

Kagome let out another sigh and sat up. “You know, I never thought I'd hear that sentence for another 30 years.”

Sesshomaru let her sit up and let the confusion show on his face.

“In my birth era, women dot get married until their twenties and don't have kids for a few years after, kids don't say `I had a nightmare can I sleep with you' until about 3 years old, I just didn't expect to hear it for awhile.”

Sesshomaru thought about it and understood. He nodded once.

Climbing out of bed Kagome opened the door to reveal at distraught little girl who obviously had been crying.

“Come here Rin.” Kagome lifted the little girl and placed her on her hip to carry her back to the bed. Sesshomaru flipped the covers and welcomed them back to bed.

Once Kagome was settled with Rin in between her and Sesshomaru she closed her eyes again but it didn't last long before another knock was at the door, followed by two other different taps.

“Mate.” Sesshomaru growled.

“I'm sorry, you know that the pups come to the leaders when they are scared.” She replied. The fact that the sentence just came out of her mouth is what surprised her the most.

“We will move this to the den.” Sesshomaru sighed as the auras outside the door grew. Pushing the covers away he picked up the sleeping child and waited for his mate to open the door.

“Retrieve this one's pelt.” He told her as the slipped into the hallway filled with children.

Kagome grabbed the fur boa and followed herding the children after their Lord.

Sesshomaru stopped at two great doors that Kagome had seem many times. He turned so his back was braced against the hard wood and pushed managing to only crack the doors marginally. Allowing everyone to pass Kagome took Rin and Sesshomaru in return took his pelt.

Placing the fur over his bare shoulder Sesshomaru transformed into his beast form and led the amazed group to the center of the dark room where he curled up and offered his belly to the kids to sleep against. Kagome settled each child in before looking at the scene.

You may sleep as you wish or you may sleep in your own form as is this one to keep the children warm. This room will become colder thought the night.

Kagome bit her lip as Sesshomaru's voice floated through her mind. Unsure of how to change Kagome looked into the deep amber eyes that stared at her from their place above her.

“Teach me to change.” She whispered.

Images and feelings flickered through her mind showing her what to do. Nodding she began to do what felt only second nature to her.

Slipping out of her human skin Kagome shook her body and stretched out to get use to the new muscles. Looking down at her mate she twisted her head at the look in his eyes.

You are a beautiful Inu.

I am? Kagome thought as she lay down to create a circle around their pups making an almost perfect yin and yang symbol.

This one is proud of his mate. Sesshomaru purred laying his head on his paws.

Kagome smiled and mirrored his motion. She was happy that she had made him proud.

 

Nudging the kids out and to their baths, Kagome gave each one a lick to the face and pawed the great doors closed. Shaking out her fur she turned and padded back to awaiting mate who still lay watching.

We should probably bath and head back.

It would be acceptable. However he made no move to stand.

Kagome turned her head in confusion and laid down to stare at him.

Hiding his smile Sesshomaru crawled towards his mate and licked her muzzle. Will you clean this one?

I'm not sure I understand…

Sesshomaru stood and leaned over his mate. His tongue confidently reached out and began to lick at her fur.

The feeling was odd but very relaxing. Kagome allowed her huge body to roll on its side as Sesshomaru's tongue swept paths across her body.

Once he was done Sesshomaru sat on his haunches and grinned. Kagome's coat was clean and she smelled strongly of him.

Is it common for Inu's to do this?

Many will partake in the tradition but others find it barbaric. We are losing our traditions to more human ones and the few that know of the past are being over run with more modern things.

That's so sad. Kagome whined. Standing she tentatively leaned forward a swept her tongue up along her mate's muzzle.

Sesshomaru shuttered under her touch but didn't move as she continued the actions.

It took Kagome longer to clean Sesshomaru then it did for him to clean her but neither of them minded much.

I believe we should dress and return to the battle. It is sun rise and the battle will start soon.

Alright. Kagome smiled and pulled the energy back into her body to shift.

Sesshomaru followed her and then led her out and back to their rooms.

 

Inu Tashio watched as his oldest son and his mate landed outside of the tent. Kagome was dressed for battle along with his son. Standing he moved to greet them.

“We are making final preparations.”

“That is acceptable, Kagome, go and check with the generals, this one wishes to speak with his sire.”

“Alright, play nice.” Kagome smiled at them both and bounced off the chat with the generals.

“You have chosen well pup.” Inu Tashio said as he held back the tent flap.

“Hn. This one did not chose, this one's beast chose.”
”But you don't seem to think ill of it.”

“This one does not need to explain himself.” Sitting behind the desk Sesshomaru double and triple checked the plans.

“No, but I have watched for many years, The Gods have placed you two together for many reasons.”

“Hn.”

“She is your saving grace son.”

Sesshomaru looked up at his father with red rimed eyes. “What this one's mate is or isn't is no business of yours. I have no interest in what the Gods will is.”

“You should son. There are many things that you don't know, you would be wise to open up more to your mate and see what the world is, not what it was.”

Standing Sesshomaru felt his control slipping. “You will do well sire to leave our conversation be.”

Kagome poked her head in at that moment with a scowl on her face. “I said play nice. Would you calm down Sesshomaru, you have everyone on edge with your aura.” She snapped.

Sesshomaru turned his attention to her and growled.

Kagome felt the shift in his aura. “Ya, ya, gurrr. Grow up mate. Now isn't the time. Guards spotted the North moving this way. If we're doing this, pull yourself together and get a move on it or I'm going to start running this show.” She ducked out and walked away.

Sesshomaru growled again but Kagome wasn't listening. She nodded her head to a waiting general who started shouting orders.

Inu Tashio watched between the two in mild humor. Either Kagome didn't know not to piss Sesshomaru off more or she just didn't care. He really wasn't worried about it either way because he knew Sesshomaru had tight control over his actions. Or he hoped so at least.

“Hey bastard, let's go.” Inu Yasha yelled.

Sesshomaru was gone before the elder knew it attacking the unknowing hanyou.

“Gah! What the hell!” Was all that was heard before a single blast and a handful of crashes.

Inu Tashio looked at the destruction as he walked away from the tent.

“SIT!” Kagome's voice echoed through the camp. Finally location the commotion in a crowd he walked through the opening made for him.

Kagome held Sesshomaru left ear tightly and stood over a fuming hanyou, who was subjugated to the ground. He watched as she leaned over effectively pulling Sesshomaru down with her. Letting out a yip Sesshomaru bent with his angry mate.

“I don't know who started what, but I'm not in the mood to deal with a couple of pups. If your going to act like children then go back to the castle and fight there. I'm not going to baby-sit both of you when I have to watch my own back. Grow up or go home.” With a snap of her wrist she threw the demon Lord next to his brother and stomped away.

“Mate.” Sesshomaru snarled and shifted to lunge.

Turning Kagome snarled back. “I have had a very good morning. Do not ruin it with your childishness.”

Inu Yasha pulled his ears to his head and stayed out of the line of firing.

“You will attend to me, now mate.” Sesshomaru growled.

Looking back at the two men on the ground Kagome snorted. “General Fei if you will assemble the men.” The man nodded from the crowd and called out orders. The group of spectators broke up leaving Kagome, Inu Yasha, Sesshomaru and Inu Tashio alone.

“I have no doubt what so ever that Inu Yasha didn't start this somehow, but I know it was you who probably hit him first. You are both grown men, if you can't handle being in the same area where the tension is already high them I'm going to make it so that you never get to come to a battle again.”

“Kagome.” Inu Yasha whined.

“Don't even start. We've had this talk, and right now you are both acting like Shippo. Now are you going to be men or boys?”

Sesshomaru continued to snarl but Inu Yasha stood and walked away knowing it would be better to say nothing.

Inu Tashio watched as his youngest son walked by him and went to join the army setting up to leave.

“Mate you will submit.” Sesshomaru's eyes were slowly bleeding red in his anger.

Kagome looked across the field at her mate and turned her nose up.

Inu Tashio watched the two and decided it was time to step in before things got to bad.

“Kagome, why don't you go check on things.” He said calmly.

“No, she will tend to this one.” Sesshomaru was standing and making his way towards the girl.

“Son, she doesn't know our ways, let her go.” Inu Tashio's voice was calm and strong in his growing fear.

“She has placed herself about her mate and Alpha, she will be punished.”

“Sesshomaru, that is enough, that punishment hasn't been used since your mother was alive and even then it wasn't used much, if you ask Kagome…”

He couldn't finish before Sesshomaru snapped at him. “This one cares not, she is not being asked. It is my choice as her mate what her punishment is.”

Kagome watched the exchange. Sesshomaru was angry obviously and Inu Tashio was trying to save her from something. I can either stand up for myself or I can cower. She thought to herself.

“You'll get nothing from me Sesshomaru.” She threw her hand to the side making it a final gesture.

Inu Tashio realize the situation for what it was worth. He dived very un-elegantly at his son. “Kagome run!” He growled throwing his son into the trees.

“I'm sorry, but I can't run, you know that.” She shook her head.

“Well unless you want to be raped in front of everyone I suggest you hurry and find someplace to hide.” He grunted as Sesshomaru barreling into him, but held his son back.

Kagome bit her bottom lip, she shifted from foot to foot. I'm really starting to hate these random demon rules. She thought to herself.

“Alright, give me a few minutes then let him come after me, take the army and go. He might join you later, but I know I won't be able to.” Kagome formed a barrier and shot off into the sky.

Inu Tashio threw his son on the ground and held his arms behind him leaning over him to snarl in his ear. “She is your mate and she carries your pups, Sesshomaru, you can't kill her and you can't break her. If you do then the world, as we know it is gone, life will stop and all will be dead. She doesn't know our ways and from what I saw you refuse to teach her, so if your going to continue to pull laws out of your ass then start expecting her to fight back. She doesn't come for this time, Kagome was raised in a time where women are equal. She will never be just another bitch. The gods gave her to you so that everything could be balanced. I begged them for it because it was either this or you dying. Everything happens for a reason, and if she's not at this battle then we might not have a tomorrow.” With that said he began a slow count to 100 before releasing his son and beginning his prayer to the Gods.
