Chapter 1:
It was a surprisingly cold day for September. 'You have got to be kidding me,' was all the girl, with beautiful raven hair and stunning blue eyes, could think about as she left the house of yet another failed foster home. There would never be a permanent home for her; she considered herself a nomad. No matter where she went, she never stayed long. Why? She never wanted to talk and people just couldn't understand that. Sure she talked when she wanted to, but everyone still got fed up anyways thinking that she was a stubborn teenager. Her birth given name was Kagome, but she never let anyone call her that since the incident. Instead she went by her middle name, Kikyo. Kagome was one of many who now belonged to the government.
If you had asked her about five years prior if she had ever been witness to a crime scene, Kagome would have given you a blank stare. Her reply would have been an insult, if you even got an answer. She wished that she was still ignorant, just as most kids are which the cold truth of reality was fate wished her not to be.
Five years ago, Kagome was witness to her mother's murder. She stood there as her father became a criminal, yet his last word to Kagome was 'sorry,' as the men pulled him into a police vehicle.
A man in a black Armani suite closed the door as Kagome got into a sleek black car. He was quite handsome, to say the least and her social worker. His name was Bankutsu Takahashi, and he was about to lose his last nerve. At the moment he was driving her to the next foster home, held by Mrs. Higurashi.
"Kikyo, I swear, this is your last chance or I am going to have to go against your parent's will and send you to your uncle Naraku!" That day wasn't a pleasant one, but Kagome looked at his words as an empty threat because Bank was like a second father to her. She knew he would adopt her, himself, before he would ever send her to Naraku's.
Once Bankutsu started the car, he turned to Kagome, "So, how are we this morning?" Bank's question was simple and innocent, but it annoyed her all the more and she made no move to answer him. "I know you'll like this place. Mrs. Higurashi owns twenty acres and happens to live on an old shrine so I am sure you could do archery there." A quick glance in Kagome's direction told him that Kagome still refused to talk. "There will be other kids this time. I'm sure they'll be nice…" With a sigh, Bankutsu gave up the small talk. "Ah, come on Kagome, we go through this every couple of months," he switched to a teasing tone, "Do you really have to be a pain in my ass today?"
Kagome spared him a glance. His tone might have been teasing, but his face said otherwise. Turning a knob on the control pad, Avril Lavigne crashed through the car.
Well I couldn't tell you,
Why she felt that way,
She felt it everyday
I couldn't help her
I just watched her make the same mistakes again
What's wrong, what's wrong now?
To many, to many problems
Don't know where she belongs,
Where she belongs
She wants to go home
But nobodies home,
That's where she lies
Broken in side
There's no place to go, no place to go,
To dry her eyes,
Broken inside
Open your eyes and look outside,
Find the reasons why,
You've been rejected
And now you can't find what you left behind
Be strong, be strong now,
To many, to many problems,
Don't know where she belongs
Where she belongs
She wants to go home
But nobodies home,
That's where she lies
Broken inside
There's no place to go, no place to go,
To dry her eyes,
Broken inside
Her feelings she hides
Her dreams she can't find
She's loosen her mind
She's fallen behind
She can't find her place
She's loosen her faith
She's fallen from grace
She's all over the place, yeah
She wants to go home
But nobodies home,
That's where she lies
Broken inside
There's no place to go, no place to go,
To dry her eyes,
Broken inside
She's lost inside, lost inside, oh ho
She's lost inside, lost inside, oh ho oh
Yeah
Bankutsu switched off the radio. "I am not in the mood Bank," was Kagome's only words, cutting him off before he got a chance to speak. Bank just sighed and for the duration of the trip they sat in a tense silence. 'What a great way to start off my morning.' As they came upon the town Kagome would now be staying in, Bank acted like a tour guide, pointing out the school, libraries and 'cool hang-outs.' Kagome acted like she was uninterested; but she was listening intently, memorizing every location.
'Why must I be punished? I didn't do anything. I hate the world! Why couldn't I die in the place of mo-' Her thoughts were interrupted as they pulled up outside an old shrine.
"Bank, what the hell? Look at those steps! I am so not climbing up them every damn day!" hissed Kagome as she scrutinized the property. Bankutsu just sighed. He seemed to be doing that a lot these days. Hauling himself out the door, he remarked, "Bare with me will you? Mrs. Higurashi is very sweet and nice, and she owns the only foster care home on this island that will accept you with record you carry. She also is one of the very few permanent homes."
'Breath Kagome, nothing can be worse than the last place.'
Kagome grumbled all the way up the steps. When they finally reached the top, Bank shot her a warning look and then went straight to the door where a woman in her late thirties answered. She was Kagome's worst night mare.
"Hello Mr. Takahashi and you must be Kago-" Mrs. Higurashi was interrupted by Kagome. "Kikyo, I prefer Kikyo." Her voice was hard and her eyes set. Mrs. Higurashi was startled. Bankutsu glared at Kagome for being so rude.
"I am sorry Mrs. Higurashi, she has issues with-" Bankutsu was interrupted for the second time this day. "It's ok" Mrs. Higurashi smiled in Kagome's direction. "Alright then, we shall call you Kikyo. I am sure you have your reasons and that is fine with me." This surprised Kagome, Mrs. Higurashi was the first person not to insist or bug her about her first name. 'May be this place won't be so bad after all.'
"Well, it's nice to meet you all, come in." The woman gestured inside, flashing one of her smiles. Bankutsu eagerly followed with Kagome trailing behind. They entered the kitchen where Mrs. Higurashi stuffed as many cookies as she could down both party's throats. 'Gees', if I eat like that all the time around here, I am going to get fat. I bet all the other kids are.'
"Well now that all the paper work is done, let's get down to business." Said Mrs. Higurashi, "Kikyo, as you may know you are not the only foster care child around here." Kagome glared at the child comment. "There are two other families, four kids to be exact and my daughter. They are all around your age so there should be no problem, I hope." Mrs. Higurashi wore a pleading expression. Kagome was quit amused.
"Oh there should be no problems, right?" Bank nudged Kagome under the table. "Right," murmured Kagome. Bank turned back to Mrs. Higurashi. "I really do hope she is not a nuisance…"
Mrs. Higurashi just smiled. The rest of the conversation was spent discussing her. What she was allergic to, the medication she was on, family doctors, blah, blah, blah. Kagome just tuned them out. There was nothing important to her about this junk, and she had heard the conversations over and over in so many different ways. Plus, Bankutsu was flirting the whole time. Ewe, she did not need to listen to that.
After all the 'business' was taken care of and Bankutsu's phone number was handed out in case of 'emergencies,' Mrs. Higurashi led them back in to the front door. "Well, it was nice meeting you Mrs. Higurashi."
"Please, call me Adeline."
"Alright…Adeline," Bankutsu glared at a snickering Kagome while Mrs. Higurashi blushed, "Only if you call me Bank like everyone else." This time Kagome gaped at the two. She was the only one he let call him Bank and now a married woman? What was the world coming to? "I'll see you both in a couple of weeks for a routine check."
When Bank, was finally gone, Mrs. Higurashi smiled saying, "How about a tour?" One thing unnerved her about this woman. Now that it was only her and Mrs. Higurashi, Kagome now noticed the woman's smile was sad somehow. 'What could have happened to make her so depressed?'
The tour began, and the house was big. There were three stories. On the first stood, Mrs. Higurashi's office, her father's bed room, her father's office, a lounge area, bathroom, the kitchen and dining room. The second story held a game room, computer room which had five individual lab tops with name tags on them, a family room with a big screen television, piano room, Mrs. Higurashi's bedroom and a bathroom. Last but not least was the third story. It had pull down stairs. Mrs. Higurashi said it use to be an attic. This story had a girl's bathroom and a boy's bathroom. Each was set up like a dorm's. The bathrooms held three different showers and three toilets.
Then the bed rooms had name tags on the doors. Every door was decorated the style each occupant wanted. One door was labeled Rin and Sango. It was covered with paint and writings. Another said Inuyasha and Miroku. Their door was covered with red and black blotches with band posters on one side and then different ladies on the other. To say the girl's pictures were decent was an understatement. The next door read Sesshomaru. His door was plain white. To the side of the door, everyone had signed their name and left him a message.
Mrs. Higurashi then showed Kagome to her new room. "Well then, as you can see all your stuff is in the middle of the floor along with the furniture. I do this with every one that comes to stay. The paint is over there in all kinds of different colors. Do what you want; this is your room now. I just have a few rules." Mrs. Higurashi then went on her little list of pet peeves.
1. No running or yelling in the house.
2. No swearing with in her or her father's vicinity.
3. Be on time to dinner.
4. Clean up your messes.
5. No arguing at the dinner table.
6. Have your home work and studying done by seven.
7. Sleep in your own room.
8. Get permission before you invite friends over or go anywhere.
9. Respect me and I will respect you.
10. No house parties without an adult around or permission.
"I really do hope you like it here Kikyo. Oh and before I forget, I have a present for you over there…go ahead, open it." Mrs. Higurashi couldn't hold the excitement out of her voice. The box was plain brown, but inside laid a lap top with a name tag on it. The name tag was thankfully blank. "I didn't know what you like to be called by. Most of the kids here have their little code names. I guess it's a good thing I left it blank." Mrs. Higurashi smiled her sad smile again. It sent a shiver down Kagome's back. "Do you like it?"
"Yes, I do…thank you." Kagome smiled for the first time since she had been there. "Wonderful!" Kagome could still see Mrs. Higurashi skipping out the room. Before Mrs. Higurashi left, she turned back to Kagome and said, "The others do not know about you so they will be surprised. I love surprises don't you? Well, anyways, they should be home from school in a little while and dinner will be at 6. I don't like it when people are late. I am glad to add you to my family."
"Wait, will Mr. Higurashi be there? I have yet to meet him." That was a big mistake, but Kagome couldn't help it. She was curious.
"I am sorry to say that he has passed away." Mrs. Higurashi had the strangest expression, it was agony mixed with her sadness and pain. "I am so sorry." Kagome looked down at the carpet, any where but the grown woman's face.
"It's all right, it happened a long time ago. Now, you have to get settled. Remember, dinner at six." And she was gone. Kagome turned to look at her room.
The room was big and she had a lot to paint. Now was a good enough time as ever to use her new computer. She butted it up and plugged in her IPod. Inside the box, where some other items: there was a picture of every one with their names in order.
They all looked happy. An old man stood on the left side of the photo. That must be Mrs. Higurashi's father. He apparently went by Ji-chan. Next to him was Mrs. Higurashi. She was hugging a girl with medium length black hair that looked just like her. Her name read Rin; she was Mrs. Higurashi's daughter apparently. Rin was side glancing and giggling at a girl named Sango. Sango had very long brown hair, which made her look wild. She was hitting a boy named Miroku. Miroku in turn was leaning against a very mad guy. His name was Inuyasha. 'He's hot.' And he was a hanyou, the dog ears on the top of his head gave it away. This Inuyasha was very unique. He had silver locks down to his butt and golden eyes. Next to Inuyasha a boy was rolling his eyes. He looked to be the oldest and could have been Inuyasha's twin except he was full demon. Sesshomaru was his name. At the bottom of the photo, Kagome learned that Sango, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru were one family. 'How could that be? One girl is human; there is a hanyou and a full demon.'
As Kagome set down the photos, she turned on her IPod and got to work. Out of the colors, Kagome decided to paint her room black. When that coat was dry, she went back over the one wall and started painting. When she had finished, the wall was a cliff looking out into the sea. The rest of the walls stayed black. She moved her bed onto the west wall and her desk sat in a corner so she faced the center of the room. The book case went next to it. The dresser and the chest of draws went on either side of her bay window. The last piece went in front of her bed. It was a chest which held all sorts of blankets. A small television stood in front of her painting.
Her next task was to unload her cloths. She was almost done when three o'clock rolled around. She stood in front of her dresser mirror singing to the last of 'hate, I really don't like you'-
Hate is a strong word
But I really, really, really don't like you
Now that it's over
I don't even know a lot about you
Brought you around,
But you just brought me down
Hate is a strong word,
But I really, really, really don't like you
At the last cords of the song Kagome started bowing to the mirror. 'Thank you, thank you very much,' she would have murmured if it wasn't for the pair of brown eyes staring back at her through the mirror. She wanted to scream, but bite her tongue. 'Wasn't that one of Mrs. Higurashi's rules? No screaming or was it yelling.'
Kagome didn't know how long she stood there staring at the petit girl in the mirror, but it seemed like an eternity. 'Ah, screw the rules! I have to do something.' Kagome opened her mouth and took a big breath, but before her yell could give birth the girl was on top of her with a hand over her mouth.
"Please don't scream! Mom will get angry; I don't like it when she's mad." This girl was strong, but little. What a contradiction. Nodding her head, Kagome turned around. 'I recognize her from the photo. This is Rin. Her mother is Mrs. Higurashi.' Putting on a fake smile, she held out her hand.
"Hi, I'm Rin. Mom told me about you when Sango and I arrived home. Sango didn't exactly, escape Mom's cookies yet." Rin giggled as she shook Kagome's hand with joy. "So you are Kikyo, right?" Was Rin's answer when Kagome didn't provide her name. Kagome just nodded her head.
"Do you like it here?"
Kagome nodded again.
"I like the room; you're a very good artist. Did you draw all that?"
Kagome nodded again.
"That's fabulous. You know Sango likes art too. You would get along nicely with her, I think." Kagome just smiled and nodded while Rin gestured to the many things in the room. It seems she wouldn't have to talk very much with this chatter bug. That was a relief.
"May I?" Rin asked as she pointed to Kagome's IPod. Kagome gave her approval as Rin started gushing over her immense collection of songs. It was not long till they were joined by another girl. `Sango, that has to be Sango.' Kagome looked her up and down. She looked very different from her photo, like an exotic beauty. Noticing that she was staring, Kagome looked away. Sango was evaluating her as she had just done to this Sango. Finally Rin remembered her manners enough to put the IPod down to start introductions, again.
“Kikyo, this is Sango. Sango, Kikyo. I think you two have a lot in common. You'll be easy friends.” Rin looked back and forth between the two as the staring contest continued. After awhile, Kagome gave up and offered this new house mate her hand in greeting. But Sango continued to stare.
“Sango!” Rin elbowed said girl in the side yet Sango didn't move an inch. Almost as if nothing had transpired. “Forgive, Sango, she has issues which doesn't help with her antisocial- ness. You know I swear…” Kagome didn't listen to the rest; she couldn't listen to the rest. She just stared at Sango with a new light. `This girl looks familiar. Why do I feel I know her?'
Rin was still babbling, so Kagome set back to work unpacking and nodding her head to various things that Rin said acting like she was listening. As she went to grab her favorite pair of sweats from a box, a hand gently stopped all motion in Kagome's arms.
“You know,” spoke Sango, “it is not nice to ignore people, but then on the other hand it is Rin and no one wants to listen to her rambling. A bit overwhelming, it is.” Her touch was gentle yet her voice rough, another contradiction. `Is that a British accent?' Kagome faked a smile at Sango, though she did not smile back.
“I must apologize for my behavior earlier. I thought I knew you.” Sango had the most sincerity in her voice but her expression stayed the same. Kagome froze.
*
“Daddy says mommy is wrong.”
“Really? My dad says the opposite. I think it is so he doesn't get in trouble `cause then mommy kicks him onto the cough. At least that's what she says.”
“My daddy says that mommy is going away. She is going to live on a farm with lots of funny animals.”
“I want to go there! I like cows.”
“Me too, the horses are my favorite!”
“Ew, horses smell.” The bronett little girl turned around with a look of disgust on her face.
The other little girl looked to the ground, tears in her eyes, “Sorry, I shouldn't have said anything. My daddy always yells at me `cause he says I never say anything nice or good. I always end up making someone sad, I'm sorry, I so sorr-”

“Hello! Is anyone listening to me?” Rin's voice pulled Kagome back from a memory. It happened a week before her father was arrested. She was with one of her only childhood friends that day. That was the last time she saw her. Kagome couldn't remember her name. It didn't matter anyway; she tended to keep away from memories of that time, it was too painful. `Time! What time was it?'
Kagome ran across the room and started digging through another box. Sango and Rin just looked at her startled. The two girls just watched her dig around in the box, looking for an answer to her absurd behavior. Kagome came out of the box with a cordless alarm clock and a triumphant smile. The clock read 4:47, `Had it been that long already?' Setting it up on the desk Rin exclaimed giggling the whole time, “A little of a spas, we need that around here!” Sango just rubbed her face, acting like Rin was giving her a head ach.
“Now what?” Rin let herself fall onto the bed. “I am bored…”
“Aren't you always?” Came Sango's smart ass reply.
Gesturing to the door, Kagome picked up the paint. Sango and Rin followed. Kagome just set up and started painting expecting them to do the same, without a word. After awhile, Sango and Rin took the hint and followed suit. It was not until 15 minutes before dinner when they finish. Standing back, the three girls admired their work. Rin smiled triumphantly.
The door now had an infinite amount of colors and random doodles here and there. There were phrases outlining the door and a warning sign. Sango even drew Kagome here own comic strip of the alarm clock incident.
Sango bent down and started cleaning the mess so the paint wouldn't get on the carpet. As she stood up, one of her paint cans got in the way of Rin's gesturing hand. Inside the can was a paint brush. So, down came Rin's hand, connecting with the brush, and up came the brush- flying into Rin's face. In Kagome's opinion, Sango couldn't help but laugh. Hell, she was even laughing. No one saw what was coming next from the sweet innocent chatter bug, who now sported a purple face. Let's just say five minutes later, there was not a spot on their clothing that didn't have a layered of paint. Rin was the worst. `Well, in a way Rin disserves it. She wouldn't stop talking!' Kagome wanted to snicker.
“Sango, look at my new skit!” Shrieked Rin as she examined the rag identified as a skirt.
“Well, it looks better than it did before-hey! Watch it!” A paint can just missed Sango's stomach as she side stepped.
“Opps! My bad, did I hit you?” Rin looked up at Sango with the most innocent face that belonged on a two year old when trying to escape a mother's scorn.
“You're supposed to be the innocent, non-trouble maker slash mature one!”
`Innocent my ass!' thought Kagome.
“I can act like you once in a while-“
“More like Inuyasha!”
That confused Kagome. Who was Inuyasha? `Oh, the photo. He was the hanyou in the picture and Sango was his sister.' Sango turned to Kagome, remembering how Kagome knew nothing.
“Inuyasha is my brother, and his is as immature as it gets. You'd probably be better off staying away from him. Though he's a good person, when he wants to be…” Sango offered a small smile. `She's warming up to me…' All the while Rin was yelling protests in the background.
“Dinner is ready! We are going to eat early.”
`What was that?' Kagome looked around, she didn't see Mrs. Higurashi- then how did she hear her voice? Kagome watched as Sango walked to the intercom right outside the girl's bathroom on the wall.
“We'll be down in a sec, but why so early? You never have dinner early.” Sango spoke clear into the intercom and played around with a few switches. Kagome had only seen these before in one of the other foster homes. She had never used it, she was never allowed.
“The boys called and said they would be home late. So we are going to start eating without them. I am not going to wait for them, they know when dinner is, term paper or no term paper.” Mrs. Higurashi's voice was so sweet, you would have never thought, she was annoyed.
“Come on, we better get down there.” Sango turned and ran for the stairs.
“Yeah, don't want to get mom any more annoyed.” Rin followed.
“Seriously, I intend to live to see tomorrow.” Sango turned back, “Come on, Kikyo…”
`They included me.' Kagome was mildly shocked. `Strange, they don't seem to avoid me like most.' Normally people her age would know that she existed yet stay away.
Kagome followed them down into the dining room. When Mrs. Higurashi noticed the state of their cloths she didn't hesitate to give them all a glare that sent them running back up the stairs to change.
Coming back down and into the dining room, Kagome took a look around. The room was neatly decorated, nothing fancy, but not plain. With the color theme an olive green and various small paintings here and there, the room was charming. Rin went to the wooden china cabinet in the corner and started setting the table. Sango started bringing the food out of the kitchen with Mrs. Higurashi.
Turning to the far side of the table, she noticed a pair of dull green eyes examining her.
“Go ahead and sit down Kikyo.” Mrs. Higurashi smiled as she gestured to a chair in the center of the table. Milk stood beside every plate, except for a lone glass of wine.
“Kikyo, this is my father Mr. Higurashi. Dad, this is Kikyo, our new house mate.” Kagome sat one chair down from Mr. Higurashi. The old man reached his hand out.
“Hi, Kikyo, call me Ji-chan, that's what everybody else calls me.”
Kagome smiled and with a nod of her head in greeting. Ji-chan grasped her hand and closed his eyes starting to chant.
Rin watched eager while Sango rolled her eyes. Kagome got a little frantic, but when she looked at Mrs. Higurashi, she was calmed with a comforting smile.
Ji-chan brought his other hand around to add to his other clasping her hand. He then bowed his head and addressed her. “I sense power. You have a strong will and a good heart, but for some reason I feel much sadness in your soul. You are very special Kikyo; I hope you will be most happy here.” He offered her a toothy smile. The grin belonged on a small child, rather than an old man.
Dinner was peaceful and delicious. Kagome was enjoying the calm serenity when she was awoken from her retrieve. The din of the front hall was defining. Apparently it was too much to bear for the other occupants at the table. Kagome was almost scared of Sango, just by the annoyed look on her face. Three familiar boys came stumbling in- well, at least the first two did. The oldest walked with much grace, as if he owned the place. Kagome looked over at Rin, and could see stars in her eyes, staring at said graceful boy. The others were bickering, Sango especially. `Let the chaos begin' she thought.
