Chapter 3, The Panel
All eyes were on Kagome, who was blushing redder at every second that ticked by. She hugged the lone towel, she held, closer to her chest than ever. `Why me? If I hadn't slammed the stupid door, this wouldn't have happened. Why don't they do something?' Everyone just stood there, staring at each other- starting at the ground. No one moved. Hours could have passed for when Rin spoke everyone jumped a mile in the air.
“Kikyo, umm, why don't I take you to your room?” Kagome nodded vigorously.
“Guys, back to your room- NOW!” shouted Sango, pointing and pushing all the way. “Here Kikyo, take another towel.” Kagome made a grab at everything. Her body's uniform now consisted of three towels wrapped around her chest and waist while a towel sat nicely coiled on the top of her head.
Rin attentively tried questioning Kagome in a soothing voice, “Kikyo, what happened?” At that moment Kagome wanted to shrink into nothingness. Nothing about this could get any worse, could it? Sango wrapped a protective arm around Kagome when she failed to answer Rin's question.
“I'm sorry; I didn't mean to be rude. I just-”
“Rin, I bet it was an accident. Like maybe she didn't know where the towels where and didn't think about that fact till after her shower? Is that right?” Sango looked at Kagome. All she could do was nod and be grateful. Rin laughed nervously. It was like listening to a new born bird chirp with strep throat.
“Let's not tell my mom about this. Okay?” She started fidgeting with her bracelets. Sango just laughed.
Inuyasha stayed out of sight as he watched the whole scene unfold. The new girl might have irked him before, but she definitely irked him now. Tomorrow was school and after was the first football game of the season. He wondered how well the girl would fare. She seemed so fragile. Inuyasha didn't- couldn't trust her, not yet at least.
Inuyasha watched them walk into Kagome's room. They would probably be there half the night.
“Half breed, are you going to help me with this project or not?” The voice was smooth and cool. It often sent shivers down his spine. Sesshomaru had that affect. Turning on his heel, he slammed the door behind him cursing his brother.
“Get Miroku to help you- he's the nerd!”
“Hey, I resent that.” Miroku had an indignant look on his face as he watched his friend closely.
“I would, but the insufferable human annoys after a while. Instead of giving me the answer, he gives me a hint trying to help me `work it out' first.” Inuyasha snorted at his brother's distress. He was in for a long night. Sesshomaru wouldn't leave his room until the project was done.
Rin went back to her room with Sango. She took each step with a measured pace. The new girl was different. That much was for sure. Everyone's reaction to her was off. Disturbance seemed to be inevitable. Sango and she had stayed half the night with Kikyo just talking and playing cards.
“Sango, what do you think- about Kikyo that is?”
Sango's face scrunched up as she thought. She finally let out a sigh with her answer. “I'm not sure what to think,” Sango's voice was like a whisper as she put her hand on their door knob. She just stood there stroking it while speaking, “She is very unusual to say the least- a distraction almost, if you know what I mean.”
Rin shook her head in confusion, “No, I'm not sure I know…”
Sighing Sango tried to string the words together that would explain her thoughts. “Every time I figure something out about her, she does something and I totally lose control of that thought. Then I have no clue as to what that thought had been and I see no connections between the two anymore.” She stopped and took a deep breath thinking again.
Rin considered this for a moment and then blurted out, “Do you think she does it on purpose?” Sango stared at Rin. She was surprised for the second time that night. “Um… it's a thought, I guess.” She shrugged and they both got ready for bed.
Kagome sat on her bed, legs folded, facing the open window. To leave or not to leave? That was her dilemma. She had to say this was the best foster home she had ever been in, but it wasn't all that great. She would rather have Bank adopt her. She closed her eyes and lifted her face; the moon light shown down on her. And suddenly she was acting on a whim; moving to the door. She was a sleuth in the night, silently never being seen. She crept down the stairs and moved past the living room to the kitchen. There she stood right in the entrance way, not knowing what to do next. Her whim was gone.
“Leaving so soon?” She caught her breath and spun around, trying not to scream. Her eyes where wide and rimmed red. Inuyasha sat at the table. There was no food in front of him or a book in his hands- he just sat there. Kagome bite her lip. Should she go back or just stand here like an imbecile?
“Go back to bed,” snapped Inuyasha. Kagome huffed and turned to leave when she thought better of it. She squared her shoulders and sat down across from him. She could barely hear the growl that emitted from his throat. No doubt a demon could have picked that up much easier. She stared at her hands.
Sighing Inuyasha spoke to her out of reluctance or curiosity. Of which he knew not of. “So… what are you doing down here?” Silence.
Did he want her to speak to him? Kagome hesitated. She wanted to speak to him, but why should she? She had absolutely nothing to gain from it.
Inuyasha got irritated. He tried repeating the question and she still didn't respond. Was she trying to annoy him? Stupidly he voiced his thoughts and she just smirked in return. Sighing he sat there. They both sat there in silence. Inuyasha marveled at the quietness. It was actually kind of nice to just sit here. Before long he barely noticed she was there.
Kagome watched Inuyasha. He was very rude, but very nice to look at. She was satisfied with just sitting and starting at him; something that didn't seem to bother him as much as before. She made a study of him. The way his eyes were placed evenly at the nose, the way his nose sort of flared out when he became unsettled, and the way his lips twitched as he thought. When morning came, they where both asleep at the table.
Kagome awoke to the gentle footsteps over head and a gruff voice in her ear. “Kikyo! Come on wake up! Unless you want to get in trouble, we have to be outta this kitchen before mom comes down here to make breakfast. Kikyo!” She was up, hurrying after Inuyasha. Where were they going? Inuyasha made a sudden turn and they were outside the laundry room. He pulled back a wooden panel and got in. something told her that this has happened before. Once he was in he motioned for her to get in. The space was small and cramped, not to mention hiding wasn't her top priority- escaping was. She shook her head at him. There was no way the thing could hold both their weights anyway.
Growling, Inuyasha grabbed her arm and pulled her in. Kagome didn't even try to fight it as she was startled already. Once he had her tucked in the small panel with him, he shoved the opening closed. It was dark and Kagome was acutely aware that she was sitting in between Inuyasha's legs. And though she was horrified, her body came alive with excitement as her cheeks flushed red.
Inuyasha could smell her arousal and it didn't help since his demon extremely liked this position. That made him angry. He barely even knew this girl for crying out loud! Holding his breath, he pulled on the rope connected to the whole pulley system and they slowly started moving up to the top floor.
It was a very long assent to Kagome. As soon as the panel opened on the top floor, she would run to her room. This could not get any worse. Inuyasha kept pulling them higher and higher, but even being a half demon, he started to get tired. He wasn't use to pulling double his weight. After awhile he started grunting about stupid wretches and their stupid weight. Kagome hearing every word started to elbow him in the stomach. Her excitement from earlier gone. Inuyasha growled more, but bore with it.
Kagome began getting impatient. They had been in the thing two minutes already. Shouldn't they have been at the top by now? With a little hesitation, she began to help. When they reached the top Inuyasha let Kagome bolt to her room. It was her first day of school and she wasn't his responsibility anyway.
