Chapter 6: Kane-Sakura vs. Nigiyaka
InuYasha sniffed the air again. “Damn it! Where the hell could they have all gotten to?!” He growled. “That cat is gonna pay if he did anything to my sister!”
Kagome placed a hand on his shoulder. “Calm down InuYasha. Remember, it's not only Kane and Setsuna that have been missing. It's a good probability that they're all together somewhere.”
“Still,” Miroku shuddered. “I can't help but have concern for my sister as well. There is an ominous feeling coming from the forest.” He glanced about him. “Have you noticed how the all the plants in this forest have simply…died?”
Sango held her Boomerang Bone behind her as she observed the area. “The monk's right. A dark cloud hangs over towards the east of the forest. Something is definitely going on.”
A crash resounded through the forest from Kaeda's village. InuYasha whirled around and unsheathed Tetsusaiga. “All of these demons have also shown up without reason. All of these things can't just be happening because of coincidence. Kane-Sakura is probably behind this some how.” He raced back to the village with Kagome on his back as usual and Miroku and Sango on Kirara.

“Look out Kane!” Setsuna flung himself at Kane to get her out of the way. Wrapping his arms around her waist, he pushed her to the ground, away from the vine that could've dissected her from the back. He landed on top of her and shielded her as the vines continued to whip around them. “Are you okay?”
“Setsuna, move!” Mika yelled as she swiped at a vine headed for his back. The plant lost its limb as Setsuna rolled both him and Kane away from the danger. Finally able to stand, Setsuna lifted Kane into his arms and leapt just before another vine struck the ground where they had laid.
He asked her again. “Are you okay?”
“I'm fine…” Kane started
“Don't turn you back on this thing like that again! You almost got yourself killed!” Setsuna set her down, scolding her like a child.
Kane huffed. “Then don't distract me.” She reached for her sword again, only to find her scabbard without a hilt. “Uh-oh…”
“Uh-oh?”
“My sword's missing.” She frantically looked around the perimeter for her prized inheritance and saw it stuck in the ground, right next to the giant creature's head.
Setsuna held her back. “No, I'll get it.” He leapt down into the battle ground, dodging the most of the vines with great ease and tearing at the ones that came too close to knocking him silly with his claws. Once he was close enough, he lunged for the sword, but his foot was caught by the vine beast Nigiyaka had created as a distraction.
Dangling in the air by one foot, Setsuna looked directly into the monster's eye. Cockily, he folded his arms over his chest. “And here I thought I'd seen ugly. You're way past ugly and crossing into unsightly!” He punched the demon's only eye, then somersaulted out of the vines grasp. He landed next to the sword and lifted it out of the soil. Leaping away just before a vine crushed him, Setsuna managed to escape uninjured.
Mika was trying everything possible to freeze the giant asparagus monster, but even Zei wasn't working. “Damn it; it's immune to ice.” She looked over at Michi who was having a difficult time too. From out of nowhere, Yuki came sailing into the wolf demon. She hit Mika and both girls went flying on impact. Yuki was now unconscious and Mika was out of breath from getting the wind knocked out of her.
“Setsuna, this isn't good; fire and ice don't seem to be working on it!” Kane stated as he handed back Teretsu.
“Fire works somewhat on it, but do you think that fire and diamonds would work the best if they're combined?” He pointed at Michi, who had barely managed to get a fire attack out on the monster. It scathed the monster as she dodged another vine. “You're attacks have gained more hits than mine have.” Setsuna's eyes transposed to their fire colors. “What if we combine the two most effective elements against this beast?”
“We have no other choice; let's try it.” Teretsu transformed as Setsuna gathered a fire ball in his hands. When they both felt their powers swirl and collide around them, they unleashed Fiery Diamond River.
The river of diamonds was surrounded by a spiral of hot flames and as it sparkled and gleamed, it hit the vine creature full force. The wind of the aftershock made both Kane and Setsuna's hair fly back. The monster exploded and disappeared as a pile of ash. The cave was now open, and Nigiyaka stood right in the entrance. He clapped his hands three times in sarcastic applause as he approached the two half-breeds. “Congratulations Kane-Sakura, you've defeated my vine creature.” He smirked. “Now comes the fun part.”
“Something tells me that you're supposed to be the fun part.” Kane pointed her sword at the demon. “Maybe it will be, for me at least.”
Nigiyaka grinned, his plan of attack in his right hand's grasp. “I most certainly will enjoy this part, since your demise will be the final act.” The thorny rose was brought out in front of him and up to his nose. Inhaling its gentle fragrance, he continued. “But I will thank you, at least, for freeing me from my captivity.” In the blink of an eye, he stood two feet from her, right beside her blade. Kane stepped back as Setsuna tried to get in front of her, but he was pushed back by Nigiyaka's other hand. Looking from the sprawled Neko demon to Kane again, he offered, “As a gift to you, I give you this rose.”
Kane swatted his hand away, vehemence burning in her eyes. “I won't fall for your tricks; once was enough.”
“Oh but I must insist upon you taking this rose. It's a gift after all.” He took control of her easily because she wasn't expecting it in the least way. She reached out for it, her hand trembling from her fighting back. Setsuna yelled out as he stood, “Kane, do it now! Don't fall for his traps!” He rushed forward as her finger tip touched the stem of the deadly rose. He dove between the two and grasped the rose with his whole hand, the thorns of the rose cutting his palm. He lay on the ground, feeling the effect of the poison almost instantly.
Nigiyaka laughed mockingly. “Do you not realize that in saving Kane-Sakura you've begun your own demise?”
“I don't die so easily.” Setsuna felt weak and dizzy as he sat up to face the evil demon.
“That may be true, but that rose intended for Kane carried a toxic and lethal poison that will kill you shortly.” Nigiyaka relinquished his hold upon Kane.
Blinking away the slight traces of cloudiness in her eyes, she saw Setsuna lying on the ground, sweat pouring down his face. “Setsuna? Wha…what's happening?” Sheathing her sword, she rushed over to him and crouched next to him. She touched his arm and brought it back instantly. `He's burning with a fever.'
“That rose, it contained a poison in the thorns. I saved you.” He smiled weakly as he touched her face.
Tears stung at the back of Kane's eyes. “Poison?” Her voice choked out as she drew in a shaky breath.
“Kane, I promised you I'd protect you and I did.” He coughed up some blood and spit it onto the ground before lying down. “This may…turn out…”
“Don't say it!” Kane's tears fell on his cheeks as she hugged his head into her chest. “Please, just hang on!”
“Don't cry for me Kane.” His hand weakly brushed her cheek and rubbed a tear away. “I know I failed you in staying alive myself, but you're still alive. That's all that matters to me right now. Go on without me…” He felt his body shut down as his vision became fuzzy, for he knew he was dying. “…since I'm…I'm…” He closed his eyes, paling in complexion in her lap.
The royal blue-eyed demon stepped forward as Kane started to sob. “Setsuna! No, please don't leave me here!” She hugged his lifeless head tighter, willing his soul to return. “You said you didn't die so easily! Come back…!”
“Do you still oppose me? Knowing now how easily he was killed, are you still willing to go against me?” Nigiyaka stood directly behind her, holding the same blade he'd used to stab her back in the forest. “Why don't you just surrender now to make it easy?”
“No.” She remained seated on the ground, tears falling down her cheeks. “Because of you, my friends have all been injured, some are dying and one is dead.” Kane finally looked up from Setsuna and into the sky, her face wet and shimmering with tears.
“Then you'll die.” Nigiyaka stated as he raised the blade above his head and over Kane's back, over her heart. As he brought it down, Kane whirled around and parried the knife with her own sword in its untransformed state. The dagger was tossed out of his hand as she stood.
“I'll avenge them all, just by killing you.” The sparkling diamonds glistened as the blade transformed and turned golden, illuminating her wet face. “The time comes now; you will die!” She lifted Teretsu high off of the ground and swung down on him. The soil split as the diamonds cut into it. When the dust settled, Nigiyaka had disappeared.
“You can not kill me.” He said from behind her. She whirled around and raced after his shadow that was shrouded by the dust. But when the dust had cleared, he was gone again.
“Coward! Show yourself!” Kane cried out desperately. “Come out and fight me!” The pull on her mind suddenly increased as Nigiyaka started taking control again. “No! I…won't let you…!” She closed her eyes, willing the pain and control away. `I need to find that song again, or he'll kill me by having me simply stand here while he slaughters my body!' Opening one eye, she looked down at Setsuna; his peaceful face was white against the brown ground and he looked merely to be sleeping. `But my inspiration is dead…what can I do?'
“Surrender…” Nigiyaka announced as he appeared next to Kane. She crouched onto the ground, standing on all fours like a dog. The dagger was back in his hands and it glimmered in the dim light as he lifted it high above her heart. “…and die.”
An icicle came flying at him, breaking his concentration. Kane's eyes returned to normal and she looked up as Nigiyaka glared at the source of the ice dagger. Mika stood, Zei drawn and ready for battle. “You bastard! You have some nerve, trying to kill Kane by such a pathetic mean.” Mika stated angrily. “Only a wimp would use such despicable intentions!”
Kane used her chance to swing Teretsu at him again. He saw the giant blade coming towards his legs and leapt out of the way. As Nigiyaka descended, an arrow flew past his body, narrowly grazing his chest. He looked over in the direction the arrow had come from and saw Koya with another arrow nocked back in his bow.
“I can not allow you to remain living. That hanyou maiden you see before you will defeat you!” Koya let his next arrow fly at the demon, but Nigiyaka was too fast. He rushed up to Koya, past the arrow that he'd fired.
“KIREINAGARE!” Kane called out as she swung her sword into the ground. Again, Nigiyaka knew it was coming and dodged it swiftly.
“Kane, you need that song that almost killed cat-boy! You sang part of it before, remember?!”
“You think I don't know that?!” Kane bellowed, pausing in her battle to argue. “I only uttered the first line when he tried taking over; I don't know the rest! And don't be so insensitive, he died only recently!” Fresh tears gathered in Kane's eyes.
“BAKA!! Don't turn your back on an enemy!” Mika pointed frantically over Kane's shoulder. Looking back as Nigiyaka charged forward with the dagger, Kane jumped out of the way easily.
Alighting gently on her feet, Kane replied smartly, “I knew he was there, you just pointed out the obvious!” Kane pointed her sword at Mika. “I'll get you later, so just sit back and watch this!” Kane dropped Teretsu into her scabbard and stated, “Take me, I dare you!”
Mika's jaw hung open in astonishment at Kane's complete idiocy. “Have you lost you mind?!” What the hell do y…?!” But Kane held out her hand at the wolf demon to silence her.
Nigiyaka, how weak do you think I am?” Just try and control me.” She threatened. “Yeah, you may have been able to beforehand, but I've grown stronger.” `Fall for it you bastard!' She pleaded mentally.
Mika finally came to an understanding. `That's right; when Kane sang that first line, she'd fought against the control and when Setsuna had told her to sing…'
Flashback…

`Setsuna…' Kane said in her mind as her eyes were opened to her. She tore away from his mouth and sang out. “Win dain a lotica…” Those few words pulsated through her as she glowed a bright florescent blue. But Setsuna didn't let go; he clung to her with all his might. And when the light diminished, the pain was gone and Nigiyaka had lost his grip; for the time being.
End Flashback…
She looked over at the dead Neko. `At least he gave her some inspiration when he was alive.'
“So you finally give up then?” Nigiyaka crossed his arms. “You have made a wise decision. Your lover is dead; your friends' lover's are or will be dead, followed shortly by your companions themselves. At least with your surrender, you will live,” He paused to smile at her. “Under my control.”
Kane cringed. `Gods I hope this works. Please fall for it so I can kick your sorry ass.' “You're losing your touch Nigiyaka. Thus far, I'm still in control.” Bracing herself, she prepared for the grip of his mind overpowering capability.
At first he took the bait and unleashed his reign over her body. But when he sensed her lack of resistance, he pulled back. “You're…hiding something.”
`Damn, he's caught on.' She flinched. `What were those first words? And the melody, how did it go?!' She started losing her cool, not realizing she'd put her guard down at the same time. Turning to look at Setsuna's peaceful face, Nigiyaka took his chance to take over right then.
It was like a boulder had hit her head as control slipped from her finger tips. Blackness shrouded her vision as Nigiyaka pushed her soul into her unexplored, darkened depths of her mind. Empty; that was how she felt in this obscure place she'd never imagined could exist in her mind. There was no light, a lack of emotion, and a severe deprivation of warmth. Kane hugged herself as voices speaking nonsense or another language whispered throughout the cavernous hall. She wanted to feel sadness, fear, grief, anger; yet her eyes remained blank, no tears fell, her eyebrows didn't crease and she couldn't frown. The only sense she could feel was defeat, she had lost.
Light, pure and white, illuminated her face. She looked at it as it shone brighter, a shape forming. And it spoke. “Why are you giving up?”
`I recognize that voice, but whose…?' As she thought this, the whispers disappeared and were replaced by the soothing voice of the light. The darkness soon faded as the illuminated being became solid. Her eyes widened when she noticed the long white pony tail of hair, the green eyes that she adored and the soft features of his face. “Setsuna…”
He frowned. “What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in your conscious mind?”
Tears welled in her eyes. “I lost; for one moment of failure, I lost.” Standing, Kane looked at Setsuna carefully. “I thought you had died?”
“I did,” He closed his eyes in sadness and guilt. “But I couldn't leave you. I have unfinished business here, and my soul can't rest until Nigiyaka is defeated.” He opened his eyes again. “And once I know you're safe.”
The cavernous space was now completely illumined and Setsuna looked as though he were still alive and in bodily form. Kane stared at him as tears silently fell down her cheeks. Approaching him slowly at first, she began to run towards him after a few moments of hesitance. She flung her arms around his chest and cried against him. “You can't leave me! Setsuna, please…I need you here with me!”
He wrapped his arms around her shaking body. “My time is over; I' m sorry.” His eyes welled with tears. “And you need to defeat Nigiyaka.”
“I can't; I don't know the song…” She sobbed.
Setsuna laughed slightly. “I thought your dog ears worked. Just listen around you.”
She stopped sobbing as her body became encased in the song. It was soft at first, and the words were barely audible; but as it progressed, she recognized the song as the lost one she needed. Closing her eyes and lifting her chin to the heavens, she felt her soul being carried off with the song as it climaxed and died. Looking around in the light again, she saw Setsuna smile and disappear. The tears streamed down her face as she closed her eyes. And she began to sing.
She fought her way to the familiar part of her mind, chanting the song and slowly gaining control back. Once she had achieved most of her goal she spoke softly.
“You lose.”
Nigiyaka let go of his hold, but found it impossible to move. He gazed at Kane, whose face was drenched in fresh tears, but determined and smiling.
Not wasting another moment, Kane closed her eyes and folded her hands in front of her in prayer. `Setsuna, this is for you…'

Once the song had reached its climax, Nigiyaka no longer seemed himself and Kane-Sakura was surrounded by a ball of blue power. Nigiyaka could no longer take anymore of the song and collapsed onto his knees. “How could I, the great Nigiyaka, be defeated by a hanyou maiden!? This can not be!”

An agonizing scream came from his lips as the final traces of his being disappeared in the light. The light dimmed, and all was quiet. Except for the little sobs coming from Kane-Sakura.

Myrako was crying as she looked at Nakura's now lifeless body. Ori hadn't woken and had grown cold, now Nakura was dead. Suddenly, both of the men's bodies became blue as the light covered them. Myrako stood and stepped back, afraid of the activity she was witnessing. Then Nakura groaned, followed shortly by Ori's stifled moan. Her eyes lit up in joy and relief. “Ori! Nakura! You're alive!” She exclaimed when the light had diminished.
Ori sat up, looking around in trepidation. “Where's Michi?” He asked. “Wait, I died?!”
“Apparently so.” Said Nakura. “I know I did. My soul was being called to the heavens when it suddenly came back here.” He shook his head. “That was way too close.”
“Then Kane-Sakura has defeated Nigiyaka I assume? If not, then we'd be have died because of him still living.” Ori stood, brushing himself off as though nothing had happened.
Nakura nodded. “He's gone. Just look at the forest around us.” The leaves were back, full and green on the trees and green grass brushed against Myrako's palm.
Ori smiled, and then stretched. “I want to see Michi again; I'm sure she was worried about me.”
“Such a womanizer.” Nakura stated as he helped Myrako onto his back to carry.
“The only woman in my eyes is Michi. Don't you have someone whom you worship?” Ori inquired.
Nakura's face remained cool as he replied with, “Of course not.” His voice shook only slightly in embarrassment.

Stupid computer is too slow. Took me forever just to get this thing uploaded from my floppy disk. Anyway, this isn't the last official chapter (but you might already know that since nobody knows what became of the rest of the characters.). I only have the epilogue to type and upload. If I'm lucky, I'll have it done by this Saturday, since I have all day Friday off from school and no work on Saturday. Bad news for all my readers of HPHS, I'm getting a second job and I may not be able to update as often as I once could. But we'll take it one step at a time.
