From Demons To Dementors
“BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!” An annoyingly loud alarm clock screeched in Souta's ear. Growling fiercely, he turned over and slammed his hand on the snooze button.
`Damn alarm clock! Why won't it just die? ...Hmm……Why do I even have my alarm clock set? ...It's Sunday ……Isn't it? ...Yeah, I think so, but why did I-………KAGOME!!!' He sat up in shock, trying to rub the sleep out of his eyes.
As soon as Souta was sufficiently awake, he ran to his sister's room to make sure last night was not a dream. He burst through the door yelling loudly;
“You'd better be dressed and proper! Because I'm coming in!” He quickly took in the normality of her room and saw that nothing had been misplaced and everything was as it has been five years ago. Every thing was still frighteningly pink.
“No!” he cried, ripping off the covers on her bed.
“No…! It wasn't a dream; I felt her, I hugged her, I know she was real!” He punched the wall and started to knock her things off of her desk and shelves in anger.
“Damn it all…” he whispered as he slumped down next the widow. He was surprised to find it open.
“But…It wasn't open yesterday,” he recalled. Hope came creeping back into his heart. He stuck his head out it and called frantically.
“Kagome, are you out here?” he waited for an answer, but all he received was silence. He felt tears beginning to form in the back of his eyes.
“No…” he softly cried.
“Souta, what are you yelling about down there?” A distant voice drifted down from the top of the Goshinboku to him. “And what was that crashing noise I heard?”
“Kagome!” Souta exclaimed, wiping away his tears.
“Yeah, what is it?” Kagome called back, “Is something up?” Souta looked up and saw a black and red figure standing on one of the topmost branches of the god tree.
`Thank kami,' he sighed inwardly.
“You, I suppose” he returned, bemused. Souta climbed out of Kagome's window and onto one of the lower branches of the Goshinboku.
“How the hell did you get up there anyway? Don't you dare expect me to come up there to get you down!” Souta looked simultaneously furious and relieved. Then he shifted on his branch to move to another, but he turned his face up when he heard a soft bell-like giggle from above him. He was shocked and amazed to find Kagome, sprawled out like a cat on the branch directly above him.
“How…?” He was obviously dumbfounded by the speed and flexibility of his sister.
“Old habits die hard…” Kagome murmured softly as Souta began to fairly scream at her about how worried he had been and he scolded her for disappearing from him and jumping around in trees. But he couldn't stay mad at her after hearing her soft-spoken answer.
“It was not pleasant, being cooped up inside…I felt like I was in a dark cage and I would never see light again. I needed to feel the wind at my face, the bark of a tree against my back, and to smell the night. I am sorry I worried you Souta, but it shan't happen again,” she spoke sadly, “I was just so overwhelmed from last night.” Kagome averted her eyes in shame, `That's right, I must lie now and continue telling these lies; no one must ever suspect anything.' Kagome ignored the annoying voice in her head, though she knew it was right.
“Oh Kagome… I forgot that you need time to adjust… I'm the one who should be sorry, for thinking that you could just reset your instincts and be alright with this life in one night.” Souta lowered his head in submission. “I mean, you did just get back from the Feudal Era.” Kagome flinched, but he did not notice.
“I'm just still afraid you'll disappear or I'll wake up and this will all have been just a dream,” Souta admitted quietly.
“Souta, I'm not going to adjust on my own, you know. I'm going to need your help, but I'm not going to disappear, `At least not yet,' and I don't believe that this is a dream,” Kagome teased, smiling. She reached over and pinched his cheek.
“Itai! What was that for?” Souta exclaimed.
“Iie, `tis not a dream.” She smiled warmly, encouraging Souta to smile in return.
“I will always be here to help you, `Gome-chan,” he sighed as he hugged her. Suddenly, he jumped up and pointed a finger at Kagome. (Well, as much of a jump as one can manage on a tree branch at least ten feet off the ground.)
“Oi, Nee-chan, how the hell did you get from the top of the tree to down here in about three seconds?” Souta inquired eagerly. Kagome burst out laughing; it was a little louder than it had been last night, but it a soft laugh none the less. Despite that, this one was from the heart. Souta smiled tenderly. `That was her first real laugh since she's come home; she is feeling better.' He grinned, `It is good to have her home.'
(AN- Hey guys! Sorry about the depressing dramatic setting right now! But I promise that it will get better, so just sit through it and try to enjoy. Also… REVIEW DAMN IT! Hmm… I wonder if I'm allowed to say that…? ...Oh, well. If I'm not kicked off the site, I will have the next chapter out soon. Peace out! )
